NOVEMBER 2025
BY REV. DR. BOB FULLER
In the Great Commission, Jesus gave His disciples both a mission and a way of life. He said:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” – Matthew 28:19–20
The word “Go” here can also be translated, “As you go.” Jesus calls us to follow Him not just on Sunday mornings, but along the way—in the ordinary rhythms of our daily lives.
That is the heart of our stewardship theme this year: “Along the Way: A Stewardship of the Ordinary.” It’s about ordinary disciples bringing together ordinary gifts—our time, talent, treasure, and testimony—so that the Lord may do His extraordinary work through us.
As we look toward 2026—the 180th anniversary of our founding—we need to reflect on how God has used ordinary people across generations to do extraordinary things for His Kingdom. The Lord has been faithful for nearly two centuries. Now, He is calling this generation to follow Him with the same courage, faith, and joy.
How is God shaping us through our ordinary gifts?
Along the Way: A Stewardship of the Ordinary
Ordinary Disciples Bringing God’s Ordinary Gifts Together for His Extraordinary Work
TIME
Our church’s legacy isn’t just written in years — it’s written in ordinary moments of faithfulness. Moments when people showed up to teach, to pray, to serve, to worship. The saints who came before us didn’t build this church by convenience, but by commitment. How are we using the moments God has given us today?
TALENT
God has filled this church with gifted people — builders, teachers, artists, organizers, dreamers. Every generation of FPC has seen God raise up the right people at the right time with the right skills to move His mission forward. This is our moment. How will you use the gifts God has placed in your hands to strengthen His church and bless His city?
TREASURE
This year we have fallen short financially and we need every person to give in 2026. For 180 years, God has provided the people of this congregation with everything we need to fulfill FPC’s mission. We will give not out of fear or scarcity, but out of gratitude and faith — knowing the Lord of abundance holds the cattle on a thousand hills. We stand on the shoulders of those who gave sacrificially so we could worship, learn, and serve today. Now it’s our turn. Will we trust God with what He’s given us?
TESTIMONY
Every disciple has a story. Your story of faith — what Jesus has done in your life — is one of the most powerful gifts you can offer. Witness isn’t just about what we say, it’s about living in ways that show that we take the Lord seriously. When we share how Christ’s love has changed us, we help others discover the same grace and hope we’ve received. Who needs to hear your story this week? Who needs to see the courage of Christ reflected in your life?
It’s Time to Bring Our Gifts Together.
2025 has tested us. We’ve faced uncertainty and drifted toward a “wait and see” mentality. But God is calling us to something more. Now it is time to move forward in faith. To bring our ordinary gifts together for His extraordinary work.
Stewardship of the ordinary is about PARTICIPATION. The mission of FPC isn’t carried by a few. It depends on all of us — ordinary disciples, bringing our ordinary gifts, trusting an extraordinary God.
Here’s how you can participate:
• Pray – Ask God to open your heart to give generously of your time, talent, treasure, and testimony. Ask Him to show you where He is calling you to step forward.
• Participate – Get involved in a ministry. Serve. Teach. Build. Pray. Lead. Don’t wait to be asked — step up and say, “Here am I, Lord, send me.” (Isaiah 6:8)
• Give – Make a Faith Commitment for 2026. Trust that your gift — no matter how ordinary it may seem — will be used by God to accomplish extraordinary things.
Fill Out Your 2026 Commitment Card:

God’s mission has never depended on a few extraordinary people carrying a heavy load. It depends on all of us—ordinary disciples walking faithfully with Jesus, day by day, along the way.
In 2026, as we celebrate 180 years of God’s faithfulness, let’s make a statement — that this generation of disciples is just as faithful, just as generous, and just as committed to the mission of Jesus Christ as those who came before.
May the Lord bless the work of our hands, our hearts, and our lives—along the way
Grace and peace,

Along the Way at Haven for Hope
Growing as Neighbors and Disciples
On Saturday, October 18, volunteers from First Presbyterian Church gathered at Haven for Hope to host our third annual Family Movie Night—an evening filled with ice cream floats, popcorn, and joy.
For those who may not know, Haven for Hope is a transformational campus in downtown San Antonio that provides shelter, supportive services, and pathways toward stability for individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Their mission is to offer more than temporary relief—they work to restore dignity and hope through relationships, education, and long-term care in collaboration with more than 70 partner organizations.
This year’s event was especially meaningful as we witnessed warm and welcoming fellowship between our FPC volunteers and the Haven families who attended. What a joy it was to see our FPC family sharing conversations and smiles that reflected genuine neighborly love.
At FPC, we believe discipleship happens along the way—in ordinary, everyday moments where we meet God through serving others. Serving the families at Haven for Hope reminded us of our call to live out that discipleship. As we serve side by side with our neighbors, God continues to shape us into a community that does justice, loves mercy, and walks humbly with Him (Micah 6:8).
We are grateful for our partnership with Haven for Hope and for all who make this ministry possible. May we continue to walk humbly with God—along the way—as He teaches us how to love our neighbors in the heart of our city.
Flood Relief Update
From Immediate Response to Long-Term Recovery
As Hill Country communities continue to rebuild after July’s devastating floods, First Presbyterian Church remains committed to walking alongside our neighbors for the long journey of recovery.
In late October, The Ecumenical Center distributed the Comfort Kits assembled during FPC’s packing day on September 7—filled with thoughtful supplies and handwritten notes from members across multiple ministries—at Kerrville’s Water Street Festival on October 25. These kits were received with deep gratitude by first responders and families still navigating loss and rebuilding. With that phase of relief now complete, FPC’s focus is turning toward long-term recovery and ongoing care.
On October 29, members of the FPC Disaster Relief Task Force traveled to Kerrville to participate in a Long-Term Recovery Group meeting, strengthening partnerships and identifying how our congregation can best serve in this next stage of rebuilding and emotional-spiritual support.
Through ongoing collaborations with Mercy Chefs, Somebody Cares, and Texans on Mission, FPC members continue to bring meals, restoration, and encouragement to the Hill Country.
To learn more or join upcoming service efforts, visit fpcsanantonio.org/relief
Note from The Ecumenical Center:
Thanks so much for the contribution of the caring for the caregiver bags from First Presbyterian San Antonio. The first responder and local families were very grateful to receive these supplies. The Center was able to distribute 100 bags at the Water Street Festival this week. Additional support through trauma informed trainings will be provided in the near future to Kerrville, Center Point and Comfort. Very grateful for your support of the Texas hill country recovery.
With gratitude, Mary Beth and Sandy
Bringing Communion Home
(Report from the Deacons)
Your Deacon ministry is blessed to pray for, care for, and visit the covenant partners of First Presbyterian Church. One of the most meaningful ways Deacons and Elders serve is by bringing Home Communion to covenant partners who are unable to attend worship in person.
Many years ago, the late Chuck Beatty recognized how special it would be for homebound members to share in the sacrament of Communion. His suggestion led to a motion approved by the church Session in June 2012, allowing Deacons and Elders—just as they do during church services—to serve Communion in members’ homes. Under the leadership of thenDeacon Moderator Rachel Maurer, this ministry was organized and the first Home Communion services were offered in November 2012
To make these visits possible, First Presbyterian obtained eleven Communion travel kits, each containing a small plate, cups, and containers holding the bread and wine. Special thanks go to Toni LeGrand and her committee, who faithfully prepare the Communion trays for each Communion Sunday service. Toni also prepares the travel kits used by the
Deacons. These kits are placed in the sanctuary and prayed over during the 9:30 traditional service along with the other Communion elements.
After the service, Deacons collect the travel kits, each containing an Order of Worship to guide the at-home service. During Deacon meetings, volunteers receive training and practice to ensure this sacred time is conducted with reverence and care. Family members and caregivers are always invited to participate in the service.
Home Communion, served by a Pastor or by a Deacon and Elder team, is available anytime upon request, though specific Sundays each year are also designated for this ministry.
For the 2025–2026 year, those dates are October 5, February 1, and May 3.
If you would like more information or wish to request a Home Communion visit, please contact:

Children’s Ministry enjoyed a glorious morning of service and celebration on Sunday, October 19, as our youngest FPC family members helped lead the church in worship!
The Communications Team created a wonderful video featuring the children welcoming everyone to church, setting a joyful tone for the morning. Children participated in worship by reading Scripture, praying, singing, greeting, and collecting the offering—a beautiful reminder that all ages have gifts to share in God’s house.
During Sunday School, families attended Bible workshops designed to help parents and children grow together in God’s Word. Our twoyear-olds received The Rhyme Bible in their classrooms, and our third graders received their Bibles during the 11:00 AM Traditional Service.
It was a great morning filled with smiles, music, and gratitude as our children joyfully served the Lord and the congregation celebrated their growing faith.

Update on Operation Christmas Child
Dear Sweet Congregation,
After much discussion with the Missions Committee chairs, the Children’s Committee, and the Samaritan’s Purse San Antonio liaison, the Children’s Committee has decided to discontinue the Children’s Ministry outreach of Operation Christmas Child (OCC). This was a decision the committee reached after much prayer and thoughtful discussion.
Over the many years that FPC children have participated in this outreach, countless hearts have been touched—both those who lovingly packed boxes and those who received them. What a blessing this has been!
FPC celebrates and supports more than thirty mission partners, and it is the vision of the committee to focus our efforts in that direction going forward. By stepping aside from OCC, the Children’s Ministry will have more opportunity to engage directly with the ministry partners our church supports.
We know that many of you have a deep love for OCC, and we are encouraged that many of you will continue to personally support this wonderful ministry by packing boxes.
Here are some resources to make this transition easier for you:
Where to get shoeboxes:
Plastic boxes are available at dollar stores and at larger retailers such as Walmart and Target. Preprinted OCC boxes are available at Hobby Lobby. You may also use an ordinary shoebox. If you choose to wrap it, please wrap the box and lid separately, as boxes are opened at the distribution center.
This link provides a list of all drop-off locations.
National Collection Week is November 17–24.
Thank you for your faithful support over the years in helping the children of FPC make a difference in the lives of children both near and far. Stay tuned for upcoming opportunities to support the children and families of our mission partners.
With gratitude,
The Children’s Committee

Nature Category Winner: Nancy Gerfers Looking above through majestic pine trees reminds me of our creator and the wonders He has made all around us.
This fall, our church is reflecting on the theme Along the Way: Discipleship of the Ordinary. It is a beautiful reminder that God calls each of us to follow Christ not only in the big, dramatic moments of life, but also in the small, daily ones—at home, at work, in our families, and in our community. Jesus chose ordinary people to be his disciples—fishermen, tax collectors, and everyday men and women. In the same way, God calls us today to discover His presence in our ordinary routines and to live faithfully in all that we do.
That is why our 2026 stewardship theme is A Stewardship of the Ordinary. Everything we have—our time, our energy, our daily rhythms, our relationships, and yes, our financial resources—are gifts from God. Stewardship means recognizing those gifts and offering them back to God with gratitude.
This past year has not been without its challenges. Like any family of faith, we have walked through seasons of change. Yet even in those moments, God has shown us His faithfulness. Our mission and ministries continue strong: worship that lifts our hearts, teaching that forms disciples, outreach that serves the vulnerable, and community that binds us together in Christ’s love.
In 2026, we will also be celebrating an extraordinary milestone— our 180th Anniversary! For nearly two centuries, First Presbyterian Church has been a beacon of faith, reaching out to serve the people of San Antonio and beyond.
Now is the time for us, as ordinary disciples, to respond with extraordinary faith. As you prayerfully consider your pledge for the coming year, we invite you to think about how God might be calling you to live a deeper stewardship of the ordinary. Every gift sustains the broad mission of First Presbyterian Church and helps us embody Christ’s love in San Antonio and beyond.
Thank you for living generously and faithfully, especially in the ordinary. Together, God uses our everyday offerings for extraordinary purposes.
In gratitude, on behalf of your FPC Stewardship & Finance Committee, David Rogers, Stewardship Campaign Chair
“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” — Colossians 3:17
Stewardship is more than a season or a budget—it’s the daily practice of gratitude.
This year’s theme, Along the Way: A Stewardship of the Ordinary, reminds us that God meets us not only in sacred moments but also in the ordinary spaces of life—at home, at work, and in our community.
Every prayer offered, every act of service, and every gift shared becomes part of the ministry God is doing through First Presbyterian Church. As Pastor Bob reminds us, stewardship is participation, not perfection—ordinary disciples bringing ordinary gifts so that the Lord may do His extraordinary work through us.
As we celebrate 180 years of faith and service, we give thanks for the ordinary faithfulness that has shaped this congregation and sustained its mission.
On Commitment Sunday, November 23, we’ll dedicate our 2026 pledges together in worship. Each card represents a shared step of faith—our collective response to God’s generosity and our hope for what He will do through us along the way
Please prayerfully fill out your Commitment Card and bring it with you to worship on Commitment Sunday.
If you have already submitted your card online or by mail, you are still encouraged to bring one forward as a symbolic act of dedication during worship.

President's Letter Nov. 2025
"I will praise the name of God with a song; I will magnify Him with thanksgiving.” - Psalm 69:30
With a full and grateful heart, the month of October has been bursting with blessings to be sung from the mountaintops this November. God showed up in big ways—and in the details, too.
Ladies’ Night Out was a resounding success! The committee of Shelley Bass, Nancy Williams, Martha Smith, and Leah Butler—along with the entire Biggs family— certainly knows how to throw a party. Between 75 and 90 women, from college age to somewhere in their nineties, gathered, mingled, and giggled both inside and outside the Biggs’ warm and lovely home. The huge dining room table overflowed with delicious appetizers, and the dessert table was filled with special sweets—many of them masterpieces to both the eye and the tummy. But my favorite part was the fellowship. I loved getting to know some of the younger women and hearing how they are navigating their busy lives with such joy. [Read the recap and view photos at http://bit.ly/fpcsa-lno-fall2025]
That same day, the Literature Circle gathered as Morgan Fuller presented an engaging and entertaining report on The Girl Who Smiled Beads, the moving story of two Rwandan refugee children. As always with Literature Circle, there was good food and lively discussion. [Read more about the October presentation http://bit.ly/litcircle-oct25]
On Wednesday, October 22, the Women of the Church celebrated all of our FPC staff with “BBQ & All the Fixin’s,” including brisket, sausage, chicken, potato salad, mac-n-cheese, and beans. The Staff Appreciation Luncheon Committee—Sarah Rice, Caroline Clanton, and Nancy Puckett—planned the wonderful meal, with Ellen Meadows joining to help with decorations. Many WOC members contributed by baking brownies and cookies and helping to serve and clean up. The committee’s mission was to let the staff (even the kitchen and household staff!) relax and have fun. Mission accomplished!
Meanwhile, our Study Circles continued their study on James. Circles met at various times of day, with even one on Sunday for mothers of young children. Each unique group is enjoying the study despite the challenging topics, such as “Enduring Temptation.” One Circle took a “field trip” on October 21 to join other WOC members at the PCHAS Luncheon at the San Antonio Country Club, where we heard powerful stories of healing from former clients of the Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services—one of the ministries we support in various ways. Learn more about our Women’s groups and study circles at fpcsanantonio.org/women.
The Gift of Christmas Committee—Sarah Bonn, Judy Kruger, Ashley Glotzer, Heidi McDonald, and Sarah Nelson—is connecting covenant partners with families from House of Neighborly Service who need assistance this holiday season. This ministry offers families, friends, Sunday School classes, Circles, and small groups the chance to share God’s love together at Christmas. It is such a blessing to see the faces of those families as we bring the love of Jesus into their homes through connection, food, gifts, and Bibles. Learn more or sign up to participate at http://bit.ly/fpcsa-christmas-giving.
As November opens, we look forward to gathering family-style to hear our sister in Christ, Emily Peeples, speak at the Fall Legacy Luncheon. Her topic—“The Lines Have Fallen for Me in Pleasant Places”—reflects her long legacy at FPC and her wonderful faith story. The artwork featured on the invitation is from a beautiful painting of a crazy quilt by Deborah Rogers. Like that quilt, we are all stitched together in God’s love.
Peace in Christ,

KEEPING EVERYONE YOUNG IN SPIRIT
Older Adult Ministry

October has been a wonderful month for KEYS— filled with learning, laughter, and fellowship! We enjoyed hearing from Kathy Beer, one of our FPC Covenant Partners, as she shared her experiences serving in hospice care. Susan Toomey Frost gave us a fascinating look at San Antonio’s decorative art tiles from the 1920s, and Bruce Martin, a professional tour guide, led us on a “then and now” journey through the city’s historic landmarks. Our October birthday lunch at Stone Werks in Lincoln Heights was a joy as always!
To close out the month, we celebrated Halloween on October 31, dressing up and handing out candy alongside the children from our FPC Children’s Center. We also heard from Laura Ortiz, the Center’s director, who shared about the preschool’s ministry and mission with our youngest neighbors.
Looking ahead, we only have a few KEYS gatherings left before the end of the year—but they’re full of reasons to come and celebrate together!
• November 7 – Shann Chaudhry, a dedicated attorney focusing on the needs of older adults, will speak about senior law and planning ahead wisely.
• November 14 – Veterans Day Tribute. We will honor those from FPC who have served in the military. Robynn Amy from our Communications Team has created a moving video featuring KEYS members and friends who have served across the years to protect the freedom we enjoy.
• November 21 – Thanksgiving & November Birthdays Luncheon. Our own kitchen staff will prepare a classic Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings as we give thanks together.
• November 28 – No KEYS (Thanksgiving Break).
Onsite luncheons begin at 11:00 AM with the speaker or presentation, and lunch is served at noon. The cost is $15 per person. RSVP at the front desk, by phone (210-226-0215), or online at http://bit.ly/fpcsa-keys.
Mark your calendars for our KEYS Christmas Party on Friday, December 5! It’s always a joyful way to celebrate the season and close out the year together.

FIRST CUP READINGS
NOVEMBER, 2025
Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and Mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. Holy, Holy, Holy! All the saints adore Thee, casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who wert, and art, and evermore shall be. Holy, Holy, Holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, perfect in power, in love and purity. Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy name, in earth and sky and sea. Holy, Holy, Holy! Merciful and mighty, God in three Persons, blessed Trinity. (Worship in Song, # 8)

Depth of mercy! Can there be mercy still reserved for me? Can my God His wrath forebear? Me, the chief of sinners, spare? I have long withstood His grace, long provoked Him to His face; would not hearken to His calls, grieved Him by a thousand falls. Still for me the Savior stands, shows His wounds, and spreads His hands. God is love! I know, I feel; Jesus weeps, and loves me still. (The Hymnbook, # 273)

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, pilgrim through this barren land. I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me with Thy powerful hand. Bread of Heaven, Bread of Heaven, feed me till I want no more. Feed me till I want no more. Open now
the crystal fountain, whence the healing stream doth flow; Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong Deliverer, Strong Deliverer, be thou still my strength and shield; be thou still my strength and Shield. (Worship in Song, # 64)

O God, beneath Thy guiding hand, our exiled fathers crossed the sea; And when they trod the wintry strand, with prayer and psalm they worshipped Thee. Laws, freedom, truth, and faith in God, came with those exiles over the waves; and, where their pilgrim feet have trod, the God they trusted guards their graves. And here thy name, O God of love, their children’s children shall adore, till these eternal hills remove, and spring adorns the earth no more. (The Hymnbook, # 523)

Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; join in a song with sweet accord, join in a song with sweet accord and thus surround the throne, and thus surround the throne. The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets before we reach the heavenly fields, before we reach the heavenly fields, or walk the golden streets, or walk the golden streets. We’re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion. We’re marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God. (Worship in Song, # 75)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26)
