Archived in a Museum, or Active in our Hearts?

Washington D.C. is full of great museums. The Smithsonian Institution alone houses museums of natural history, American history, Native American history, and even the Air and Space Museum, to name just a few. There are also the Holocaust Museum, the National Gallery of Art, the National Museum of African-American History and Culture, the National Children’s Museum, and even the International Spy Museum (I can’t wait to visit that one day).

This summer, however, Morgan and I made a pilgrimage to our nation’s capital to visit one of the newer museums: the Museum of the Bible

The Museum of the Bible opened in November 2017 and was founded by the Green family (strong Christians and owners of Hobby Lobby). The museum spans eight floors and houses a vast collection of artifacts, manuscripts, and rare biblical texts. Its mission is to engage people with the Bible by showcasing its historical significance and influence on society, culture, and religion throughout history. From ancient scrolls to contemporary translations, each exhibit addresses the Bible’s historical development and preservation. It also presents the Scripture’s role in shaping cultures, guiding lives, and advancing the gospel. The museum takes Biblical scholarship seriously while honoring it as the living Word of God.

As I reflect on our time at the Museum of the Bible, I am left with

this question: When it comes to our government and our leaders, is the Bible simply a museum artifact— honored but kept safely behind plexiglass—or is it held in their hands and in their hearts as the Word of God?

The Bible has profoundly influenced United States history and American politics, shaping the nation's foundational values, laws, and cultural identity. From the earliest colonial settlements, many of which were established by religious groups like the Puritans seeking to build a "city upon a hill," the Bible was seen as a moral and legal guide. Biblical principles were often invoked in the drafting of key documents, such as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, where ideas of justice, human rights, and the inherent dignity of individuals reflected Scripture’s teachings. Throughout American history, the Bible has served as a touchstone for social movements, including the abolition of slavery and the Civil

Rights Movement, where leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. drew heavily on biblical themes of justice, equality, and liberation.

In his seminal work, "Democracy in America" (1835), Alexis de Tocqueville observed that religion played a crucial and unique role in the public consciousness of people in the United States. He wrote:

"Religion in America takes no direct part in the government of society, but it must be regarded as the first of their political institutions... I do not know whether all Americans have a sincere faith in their religion—for who can search the human heart?—but I am certain that they hold it to be indispensable to the maintenance of republican institutions."

Tocqueville was particularly struck by how religion, especially Christianity, influenced American values, morals, and civic life. He argued that religion in America supported democracy by promoting moral order and social cohesion, which were essential for the functioning of a free society.

There was a time when devotion to the Word of God was treasured as a foundational part of our American identity. But the Bible’s use in public debate has also been a great source of controversy. While many Americans view the Bible as a moral compass, others argue that its use in political discourse can blur the lines between religion and government, leading to policies that may infringe on individual rights or marginalize

non-Christian groups. As a result, the role of the Bible in American politics continues to be a flashpoint in discussions about the appropriate balance between faith and public policy.

The Museum of the Bible is in the middle of our nation’s capital. But, at the same time it seems that the Bible itself is getting pushed farther and farther to the periphery of American public, personal, and political life.

This fall we began studying the “High Priestly Prayer” of Jesus, found in John chapter 17. As Jesus was praying for his people, he described his disciples as people who had received and believed in him and the words he taught. John 17:8 says:

"For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me."

How “in the center” is the Bible as we consider the divisive issues of politics and the elections of 2024? Is the Bible at the center of our voting and political activity, or is it barely on the radar?

I love the Museum of the Bible for its excellence, devotion, and educational value, and I recommend it to anyone traveling to or near our nation’s capital. I also invite you to ponder this question: Is the Word of God simply a museum artifact in Washington D.C., or is it a living, moving force in my life and in the lives of people around me? If we really want people to learn about the Word of God and bring the joy and hope of Jesus to our communities, families, and nation, then the Lord’s people need to carry the Bible in our hearts—out of the museum and into the world.

Grace and peace,

CELEBR ATING KICKOF F SUNDAY FALL 2024

Children’s Ministry Summer Fun and Kickoff

Putt-Putt Extravaganza

What an unforgettable summer it's been for our children! They embarked on a global adventure, learning about the important work of Wycliffe, a Bible translation ministry dedicated to bringing the Word of God to people in their heart language. Did you know there are over 7,000 languages in the world? Our young explorers delved into the vibrant cultures of Africa, Europe, the Pacific, Asia, and the Americas, thanks to our incredible guest speakers. Through their stories and insights, the children got a taste of what life is like in different countries and even had the opportunity to pray for the people—especially the children—in these nations.

Our journey didn’t stop there. We also traveled along on all three of the disciple Paul's missionary journeys, discovering the incredible ministry of Paul

and how he spread the gospel across the ancient world.

To celebrate such an enriching summer, we hosted a fantastic Kick-off Putt-Putt event! Each Putt-Putt hole was creatively designed to reflect some of the places we studied, as well as key moments from Paul's awe-inspiring journeys. The kids had an absolute blast, and even a few managed to score hole-in-ones! The rooms were filled with joyous laughter, enthusiastic children, and dedicated volunteers, making the event a smashing success. Who says Sunday school isn't fun? If you're still skeptical, we invite you to come and see for yourself. Help us in our mission to make Jesus known to all who join us.

Blessings, Ms. Rebecca Sweet, rebeccas@fpcsat.org

FPC Staff Enjoy the Kickoff

Putt-Putt Course

A few days later, some of our staff members couldn't resist trying the Putt-Putt course themselves in a "Hole Ministry" session. It was an incredible time of community and FUN for everyone involved and everyone admired the hard work from the Children's Ministry

BACK TO SCHOOL PRAYER 2024

Uniting for Protection and Peace at Our Schools

On Sunday, August 11, 2024, many schools across our city were the focus of prayer gatherings held at their flagpoles. These informal events, which began at 5:00 PM, honored God and sought divine protection, encouragement, and peace for students, teachers, and faculty.

The Prayer Ministry Committee extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated. Our hope is that this event will continue to grow and include all schools in San Antonio in the future.

Please keep praying for our students, teachers, administrators, and staff as schools reopen nationwide.

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely He will save you from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge.” Psalms 91:1-4

DEACONS START A NEW YEAR

First Presbyterian has 52 Ordained Deacons trained to “lead ministries that nurture fellowship and caregiving within and beyond the congregation.”

We are reaching out to offer the services of the Diaconate, including home visits, home Communion, and prayer to our Covenant Partners. If you know of anyone in our congregation who needs these services, but is not currently receiving them, please let us know so we can ensure they receive care and support.

President's Letter Sept. 2024

We are excited to be kicking off a new year for Women of the Church. Our mission is to provide opportunities for women to grow in their knowledge of Christ and to be strengthened as members of His Body, equipped to fulfill His purpose in our families, congregation, workplaces, communities, and the world.

This year the Scripture selection, which provides a focus for the WOC Fall and Spring semesters, is Luke 10:39-42. The passage where Jesus visits Mary and Martha in their home. In these verses, Jesus explains to Martha (and us) the importance of time spent sitting at His feet, enjoying Him, listening to Him –the importance of being a disciple. Throughout the year, we will explore what discipleship means.

We encourage you to try out a women’s group. We have many Bible study and fellowship groups that meet at church or in Circle members’ homes once a month, including a group for Mothers of Young Children that meets in the evening for fellowship, outings and Bible study. Other groups focus on caring for the congregation through meal trains or hosting memorial service receptions. These receptions are a beautiful way to show our love and support of one another, but also an excellent outreach opportunity to the family and friends who may or may not know Jesus.

navigate there by clicking the menu icon in the top right corner, navigate to Ministries, select Adults, and scroll down to Women’s Ministry. There, you will find a list of Monthly Bible Study Circles and Women’s Groups/Circles, along with their contact WOMEN

We have various committees that organize our Fall and Spring WOC Luncheons, featuring guest speakers. Other committees collaborate closely with the Presbyterian Children’s Home and other ministry partners, while another hosts evening fellowship events, known as Ladies’ Night Out. Our Shawl Ministry and Literature Circle offer welcoming spaces for community involvement. For more information, visit the women's page of the FPC website at fpcsanantonio.org/women. You can

We look forward to the new season and hope to welcome many new women into the WOC community. You might be new to the church or a long-time covenant partner, who hasn’t quite figured out where to plug in outside of Sunday morning – we invite you to visit several Circles and see where you feel God is leading you. Who knows, you might end up joining multiple Circles – each one has something unique!

I can attest, it is a life-giving experience to walk alongside other women who have their eyes on Jesus,

as they delve into the Word, love one another and joyfully serve others. If you are not currently engaged with WOC, we would love for you to join us!

Peace in Christ,

President, Women of the Church bbnn.scheifele@gmail.com

We had a fantastic summer filled with Birthday Lunches and games, with each lunch attended by at least 30 people. As September arrives, we transition back to our regular schedule, which will run through May. We encourage you to make KEYS your go-to activity every Friday.

We're excited to welcome Paul Kacsur as we kick off the new year on September 6th. Paul is a covenant partner of FPC and a former member of the Bridges class teaching team. In addition to being a retired pastor, Paul has a love for snowboarding and has an adventurous spirit—he once rode his Harley from the East Coast to Texas in his youth. We look forward to hearing from him!

Blessings, Joe

FIRST CUP READINGS SEPTEMBER 2024

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8

Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.

1 Luke 17:20-37; Genesis 7:6-24, 19:1-28; I Thessalonians 1-2; Revelation 6:15-17

New every morning is the love our wakening and uprising prove; thru sleep and darkness safely brought, restored to life and power and thought. New mercies, each returning day, hover around us while we pray; new perils past, new sins forgiven, new thoughts of God, new hopes of heaven. If, on our daily course, our mind be set to hallow all we find, new treasures still, of countless price, God will provide for sacrifice. Only, O Lord, in Thy dear love, fit us for perfect rest above, and help us, this and every day, to live more nearly as we pray. Amen. (The Hymnbook, No. 45)

8 Psalm 14; Mark 2:13-17; Luke 19:1-10; Proverbs 8:17; Jeremiah 29:13; Isaiah 55

My Father is rich in houses and lands; He holdeth the wealth of the world in His hands! Of rubies and diamonds, of silver and gold, His coffers are full––He has riches untold. My Father’s own Son, the Saviour of men, once wandered o’er earth as the poorest of them; but now He is reigning forever on high, and will give me a home in heav’n by and by. A tent or a cottage, why should I care? They’re building a palace for me over there! Tho’ exiled from home, yet still I may sing: “All glory to God, I’m a child of the King!” (Worship in Song, No. 377)

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt, Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, there where the blood of the Lamb was spilt! Dark is the stain that

Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch

we cannot hide. What can avail to wash it away? Look! There is flowing a crimson tide; Whiter than snow you may be today. Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, Freely bestowed on all who believe! You that are longing to see His face, will you this moment His grace receive? Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within! Grace that is greater than all our sin! Holy Spirit, truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine; Word of God, and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight. Holy Spirit, love divine, glow within this heart of mine; Kindle every high desire; perish self in Thy pure fire. Holy Spirit, power divine, fill and nerve this will of mine; By Thee may I strongly live, bravely bear, and nobly strive. Holy Spirit, right divine, make my conscience wholly Thine; Be my law, and I shall be firmly bound, forever free. (The Presbyterian Hymnal, No. 321)

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26).
