Welcome New Covenant Partners! (See page 11)

Wednesday night ministry has a long history at FPC. However, in recent years, afternoon traffic and the busyness of life have conspired to make it difficult for many people to attend. That is, until this September. Throughout the month, First Presbyterian Church has been very busy on Wednesday nights, and “Fourth and Alamo” is the place to be.

In today’s fast-paced world, where distractions abound, our Wednesday evening ministries offer an essential time for spiritual growth, fellowship, and renewal. They serve as a midweek “reset,” providing opportunities to deepen our faith and strengthen our connections with one another.

Wednesday is a night for Deeper Learning through the Zbinden Center for Biblical Leadership. The Zbinden Center was founded on the belief that every church deserves welltrained leaders, and church leaders should be equipped with the tools and support they need to make disciples and effectively lead the church. To accomplish this purpose, we offer two indepth opportunities to study on Wednesday evenings.

Through our Z-Center Emerging Leaders Cohort, fifty men and women representing our own congregation, several partner congregations, and newly planted church communities are coming together for a class called “New Testament Foundations.” This course, a seminary-level class offered through ThirdMill

Seminary, includes both classroom and mentored instruction.

Just down the hall, approximately fifty men and women have gathered for a study called “Holy Heretics: The Disciples of the Reformation.” This class is the first offering of a new ministry called the Lay Academy—a ministry of the Zbinden Center designed to introduce covenant partners and lay leaders to a deeper level of Biblical Discipleship by fostering an appreciation for biblical study, church history, and historical theology.

We also have a women’s Bible study meeting this fall, discussing the intersection of politics and faith. It’s an important topic for an important season.

Wednesday night is a night for outreach. Two of our major midweek ministries are outwardly focused. This fall, we are hosting the National Association of Mental Health (NAMI). NAMI is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all people affected by mental illness. FPC has identified the support of mental health as an important priority for our church and our community. We are blessed to host a variety of NAMI support groups on Wednesday evenings.

Wednesday night is also Alpha Night. The Alpha ministry is an evangelistic program designed to introduce people to the basics of the Christian faith in a relaxed and welcoming environment. Through a series of interactive sessions, participants explore life’s big questions, such as “Who is Jesus?” and “Why did He die?” Alpha is a great opportunity for those curious about faith, new believers, or anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of Christianity. It’s a place to explore, connect, and grow. We are excited that in our second year of Alpha, we are bringing together around 90 people to learn about the good news that Jesus has for them. Alpha requires a lot of dedicated leaders. Each session typically includes a meal, a video presentation, and open discussion, providing space for participants to share thoughts and ask questions.

Wednesday is a night for music. The core of our midweek activity has always been our Music ministry. Wednesday evening is the time set aside for the rehearsal of our sanctuary choir, handbell choir, and modern service worship team. For years, the men and women of our church have refined their talents and dedicated their time to preparing for an awesome worship experience each week. If you want a preview of what’s coming this Sunday, or on Sundays to come, walk down our halls on Wednesday night. You’ll like what you hear.

Wednesday is a night for all ages. One of the most exciting aspects of our Wednesday evening gatherings is the wide range of programs available for every member of the family. Children’s programs, such as Bible Story Time in the Library, engage our young disciples. Sometimes we forget that kids need midweek renewal as much as adults do. On Wednesday evenings, they can come together to sing and hear the stories of faith. At the same time, their older siblings in the Middle School and High School ministries meet off-campus for Bible studies in the homes of our covenant partners.

Beyond spiritual learning and outreach, Wednesday evening programs offer invaluable time for building and strengthening relationships within the FPC family. Our Wednesday evenings create a more relaxed and intimate atmosphere where we can come together and truly connect with one another. Come join us on Wednesday night, and see why our hearts, and the parking lot, are so full.

Grace and Peace,

Local Mission Serve Day: A Blessing and a Success!

On Saturday, September 14, 2024, members of the FPC family had the wonderful opportunity to serve our community at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. We are deeply grateful to God for opening this door after seven years of fervent hope and persistent effort, especially on Melanie's part.

During the serve day, our dedicated volunteers built a storage shed and repaired and painted benches, significantly enhancing the school's outdoor spaces. Working together with a fantastic team, we not only achieved our goal but also laid the foundation for future collaborations.

It was truly a blessing to support the students, faculty, and the entire community of Washington Elementary. We look forward to continuing to build relationships and finding more opportunities to spread love to our East side neighbors.

Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to get involved!

Global Missions - Novus Foundation

Celebrating the Visit of Aneta and Pablo Montano

On Sunday, September 22, FPC San Antonio was privileged to host Aneta and Pablo Montano, founders of the Novus Foundation. During the 9:30 AM Traditional worship service and the 11:00 AM Modern worship service, the Montanos shared their profound mission and vision, touching the hearts of all who were present.

A Foundation Driven by a Calling

Established in 2023, the Novus Foundation stands as a beacon of hope and healing, guided by Christian principles while embracing a non-denominational approach. The foundation emerged from a pressing need to address immediate trauma among displaced Ukrainians, but it has since expanded its reach to offer various forms of professional clinical counseling. This includes services for adults and children, coaching and mentoring, and specialized ONKO coaching for cancer patients.

Aneta and Pablo Montano: Lives Transformed by Faith

The story of Aneta and Pablo is a testament to the transformative power of faith. Despite their diverse backgrounds—Aneta from an agnostic family in Poland and Pablo from a devout Christian family in Bolivia—their paths converged in a journey dedicated to answering God's call. Their commitment led them to forsake successful corporate careers to fully dedicate their lives to the Lord by establishing the Novus Foundation.

Pioneering Mental Health Advocacy

A standout feature of the Novus Foundation is its active role in dismantling the stigma around mental health within Polish evangelical churches. In collaboration with Ewangeliczna Polska, the foundation has already held two conferences focusing on mental health awareness. These gatherings, each attended by over 150 participants, aim to bring mental wellness to the forefront of church and community discussions. These efforts underline the critical importance of mental health and the need for compassionate, faith-based support.

Innovative Educational Initiatives

Looking to the future, Aneta and Pablo outlined their ambitious plans to launch the Theology and Counseling Studies (TACS) Program in 2025. This initiative will offer a Bachelor’s degree in Theology with specializations in Church Leadership or Christian Counseling. The objective is to equip future leaders with the tools and knowledge necessary to serve their communities effectively. Through the TACS program, pastors will not only lead congregations but also act as first responders in crisis situations, embodying the fusion of spiritual guidance and professional counseling.

A Divine Call to Serve

The Montanos emphasized the divine inspiration behind their work, highlighting how the Novus Foundation invites God into every counseling session, making Him the center of their mission. Each session concludes with a prayer, a practice that has been welcomed by every individual they have served. They also noted God's revelation in the need to support pastors, missionaries, and church leaders, creating a safe and restorative space for those who are spiritually and emotionally exhausted.

Continuing the Journey**

As they wrapped up their sessions, Aneta and Pablo evoked Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” Their story—marked by a courageous pivot from corporate successes to full-time ministry—serves as an inspiring example of what it means to live a life wholly devoted to God's calling. Their journey with the Novus Foundation is a powerful reminder of how faith can lead to transformative change, not only in our lives but also in the lives of countless others.

First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio expresses heartfelt gratitude to Aneta and Pablo Montano for their enlightening visit. As we reflect on their words and continue to support their mission, may their dedication to the Novus Foundation inspire us all to deepen our commitment to serving God and our community.

A Night of Indie-Folk with Zach Winters in Concert

Thursday, Nov. 14 | 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Join us for an enchanting evening of music and storytelling as acclaimed indie-folk artist Zach Winters performs live in San Antonio. This free concert promises an unforgettable experience, featuring Zach Winters along with multi-instrumentalist Luke Skaggs, and an opening act by the talented Yaz Williams.

Zach Winters: Gardener of Verses

Zach Winters’ music is a harmonious blend of the sacred and the commonplace, touching on themes of companionship, wrestling with the divine, passing seasons, and the pursuit of beauty. Winters’ indie-folk style, praised by outlets like Paste Magazine, is both homemade and luxuriant. His catalog includes eight fulllength albums, several EPs, and various other projects.

Winters' journey took him to southern Mexico, where he completed the 13-track album "Love is a Garden." During the pandemic in 2020, he created "Other Side," released in 2022. In Autumn 2022, he compiled 100 poems into "Snowmelt to Roots" and began working on his latest album, "Shade of Indigo," that released on April 24, 2024.

An Evening Not to Miss

Joining Zach Winters on stage is Luke Skaggs, a multi-instrumentalist adding another layer of magic to the evening. Together, they promise a night filled with heartfelt lyrics and soul-stirring melodies.

The concert will take place on Thursday, November 14, from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Free to attend, we encourage you to register in advance at bit.ly/ zwinters-satx.

The First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio is excited to host this remarkable event and invites you to a night where music and storytelling come together. Don’t miss the chance to experience Zach Winters and Luke Skaggs live in concert.

President's Letter Oct. 2024

Greetings from the Women of the Church! The Fall studies and event preparations are off to a great start thanks to our friends, who have prayerfully and joyfully answered God’s invitation to serve as leaders in this ministry.

In our Bible Study Circles, we will be exploring and applying the Scripture passages used in the Sermon series preached by our Pastors throughout the year with a special emphasis on the verses taught on the second Sunday of the month. In addition to the study guides, watching the sermons from both the Traditional and Modern services online has been a wonderful resource for this study format. Thank you to Jane Buchek, our Moderator Chair, and Rev. Becky Prichard for developing our study for this year and to Pastor Mitchell and Lisa Moore for additional resources at www.richlydwelling.com.

Please see the previous page for a schedule of the October meeting dates and times.

If you are not yet coming to a Circle, know you are always welcome to visit and join – there is no need to wait until a new semester begins. Contact Pat Brodeen: pat@brodeen.com and she can help you find a Circle that fits your needs.

The Month of October is filled with opportunities to serve one another and join in community:

The Ladies’ Night Out committee is preparing for a fall celebration on Tuesday, October 15 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the home of Jill Peavy. Women of all ages are invited to this casual gathering to enjoy good food and conversation. It is always such a wonderful time to catch up with friends and get to know new people in the church. Registration is available online and information will be available in the Mauzé Lobby on the upcoming Sundays. This event is free of charge! Please mark your calendar for this gathering. You don’t want to miss it!

The Staff Appreciation Luncheon committee is looking forward to the October 23 Fall Staff Appreciation Lunch which honors all church employees. Leah Butler and Martha Smith have a delicious meal planned for our amazing staff. Our church is so amazingly blessed with a staff that serves the Lord in the work they do every day, with joy, patience and love. It is our privilege to show our deep appreciation to them by serving them on this special day. If you would like to help serve, please contact Leah Butler at Leahb9@att.net.

November will also provide opportunities for learning, fellowship and service:

The WOC Fall Legacy Luncheon is on Monday, November 4 in Westminster Hall. The doors open at 11:00 a.m. and the luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. We are excited to welcome Pastor Emily Scates, daughter of Rev. Ron and Anne Scates, as our speaker this year. She is the Pastor of Discipleship at Highland Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas and will be sharing thoughts about what it means to be a disciple – throughout our lives. As we focus on Jesus’ call to be disciples and make disciples, Emily’s message will help us apply that call to our lives. I cannot wait to see you all there!

Reservations are necessary and your $25 ticket can be purchased online, in the Mauze Lobby on Sundays in October or by contacting Holly Youngquist at youngquist.holly@gmail.com. Scholarships are available.

The “Gift of Christmas” committee of Judy Kruger, Susie Patterson, Sarah Bonn, Heidi McDonald and Kelsey Smith is already working with the House of Neighborly Service to connect convent partners with those in the community needing assistance during the Christmas season. This ministry is an opportunity for families, friends, Sunday School classes, Circles, and small groups to get together to care for and share God’s love with others at Christmas time. Be on the lookout for additional information coming soon!

One of the attributes that I love so much about our body of Christ’s church is our commitment to intergenerational discipleship. Those varying threads, some strong with youth, some finer with age, some resilient with experience, some shiny with new journeys, are woven into a beautiful, sturdy tapestry by our Creator. He has provided us this gift and I am so grateful to serve in a spot where we can foster those important, intergenerational relationships.

I encourage you to take the opportunity to join us at the October Circles and events – come be a part of what God is doing in the life of our church.

Peace in Christ, Nancy

SHARING THE LOVE OF CHRIST

The “Gift of Christmas” is an opportunity for individuals or groups in our church to share Christ’s love with others by giving clothing, gifts and/or gift cards, and food to families in our community who are in need. Each family is referred to us by the House of Neighborly Service (HNS). Some families are large, with many children, while others are small with just one or two children. All are very appreciative of the gifts and the givers.

HNS is a non-profit, multi -service neighborhood center founded in 1917 by Presbyterian missionaries. The center provides a wide range of social, educational, and health-related programs for families in need on San Antonio’s west side. FPC and Women Of The Church (WOC) have actively supported HNS and its families through this mission of “Gift of Christmas” program for many years.

giving. After receiving your completed family request form, we will match you with a family and provide all of the family information. We will make every effort to match family sizes with your request. If you are unable to adopt a family but still wish to participate, cash donations and gift cards are appreciated and will be used for a larger family or a family that we are not able to match with a FPC covenant partner or group. Donations will also be used to purchase Bibles and devotional for each family. Your caring outreach and expression of Christian love will make an enormous difference for these brothers and sisters in Christ this Christmas season.

We encourage WOC circles, Sunday school classes, small groups, various church organizations, families and individuals to share in this effort and include one of these families in your Christmas

The Gift of Christmas is a mission project coordinated by the Women of the Church at First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, Texas

“It is God himself who has made us what we are and given us new lives from Christ Jesus; and long ages ago he planned that we should spend these lives in helping others.” - Ephesians 2:10

GUIDELINES 2024

As forms are received, families will be assigned. Each family is screened and referred by the House of Neighborly Service.

A form will be sent to you that includes family member names, ages, clothing sizes, and gift requests. Contact information will also be provided so that you can communicate with the family regarding specific needs, delivery information, etc.

Please call your family to introduce yourself and determine if there are any special needs and to set up a time and place for delivery of the gifts. It is a good idea to contact the family just before you plan to arrive, as well as a reminder. Delivery of gifts on or before December 22 is requested.

Include a wrapped gift with a name-tag for each family member listed on the form. You may want to consider providing a Walmart or Target gift card for older children as they often have something very specific in mind. There is no obligation or expectation that you honor every request on the family information sheet. The requests are guidelines from which to choose items for each family member at your

discretion. The real gift is your outreach to a family in Christ’s love and grace.

The gift of a Bible is always meaningful, and both English or Spanish Bibles will be available for pick up in the Mauze lobby at the GOC table. We also have a devotional and a children’s book for each family.

Limited funds are available from WOC and FPC to help with purchases. Please let one of the committee members listed below know if you need access to these funds.

When delivering gifts to the family, we recommend that at least two members from your group go together. Please allow time to visit with the family, potentially singing a Christmas carol or joining in a prayer. Let the Holy Spirit guide you. If the parents prefer to give the gifts to their children privately, please respect their wishes. Our goal is to bless their family in the most suitable way for them. If families make requests during your visit, please direct them to HNS. Thank you for opening your hearts to these families during this joyous season celebrating our Savior’s birth.

FIRST CUP READINGS

OCTOBER 2024

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8

Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.

Hear my words, O gracious Lord, to my thoughts attentive be; Hear my cry, my King, my God, I will make my prayer to Thee. With the morning light, O Lord, Thou shalt hear my voice arise, and expectant I will bring prayer as morning sacrifice. Thou art holy, O my God, Thou delightest not in sin; Evil shall not dwell with Thee, nor the proud Thy favor win. (The Hymnbook, No. 48)
