CREATED TO Dream
REV. DR. BOB FULLER
Throughout the Bible, God uses dreams, visions, signs, wonders, experiences, and other “weird” (supernatural) ways to reveal His will, lead His people, and equip them for His mission. Through the Spirit, the Lord inspires and challenges his people with “Holy Imagination.” The dreams and visions we read about in Scripture are not only pivotal moments in the lives of individuals, but they also provide clarity and direction for God’s greater plan. For us today at First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, God’s pattern of using dreams and visions in Scripture can inspire our stewardship and involvement in the mission of the church. As we reflect on how God led His people through these encounters, we can better understand how He calls us to envision His mission for the church, how He equips us to fulfill that mission, and how He empowers us to be effective disciples in advancing His kingdom.
God often provides His people with a vision of the future that calls them to a higher purpose. One of the clearest examples of this is the story of Abraham. In Genesis 12:1-3, God gives Abraham a vision for his life, calling him to leave his home and go to a land that He would show him. This promise includes a vision of Abraham’s descendants becoming a great nation, through whom all the families of the earth would be blessed. Abraham’s journey begins with a vision—one that is rooted in God’s mission for the world.
Similarly, God gives us, as His church, a vision for His mission. We are called to be a blessing to the world, just as Abraham’s descendants were.
vision is reaffirmed in the Great Commission, when Jesus tells His disciples in Matthew 28:19-20 to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” The church’s mission is to carry out this command and bring the gospel to all people.
At First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, we are called to imagine the ways in which God wants to use us for His greater purpose. Stewardship is not just about managing resources but also about envisioning how God will use those resources to advance His kingdom. When we contribute our time, talents, and financial gifts, we are investing in the mission God has for our church—both locally and globally. Through prayer and discernment, God gives us the ability to see the ways we can make an impact for His kingdom.
God does not only give us a vision; He also equips us for the work He calls us to do. In 1 Kings 3:5-14, God appears to Solomon in a dream and offers to give him whatever he asks
for. Solomon, recognizing the weight of his responsibility as king, asks for wisdom to govern God’s people well. God grants Solomon wisdom, along with wealth and honor, equipping him for the task ahead. This story shows that when God calls us to a task, He also provides the tools we need to accomplish it.
The simplest definition for the discipline of Stewardship is “using the Lord’s gifts for the Lord’s purposes.” When we embrace stewardship, we are acknowledging that everything we have comes from God and is meant to be used for His purposes. Even our dreams and visions. Whether it’s through financial giving, volunteering, or using our spiritual gifts, God equips us to carry out the work He has set before us.
Not only does God equip His people, but He also empowers them by His Spirit to do more than they could on their own. Acts 2:17-21 describes the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, where Peter quotes the prophet Joel: “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.” This event marks the beginning of the church’s global mission, empowered by the Holy Spirit to proclaim the gospel with boldness and effectiveness.
The early disciples faced immense challenges, yet through the power of the Holy Spirit, they were able to carry out the mission Jesus had given them. Similarly, today we rely on the Spirit to empower us for the work of the church. Stewardship is an act of
This
faith, trusting that when we give of ourselves—our time, our talents, and our treasures—God will multiply those gifts through the work of the Holy Spirit. 2 Corinthians 9:6-8 reminds us that “whoever sows generously will also reap generously,” and that God is able to bless us abundantly so that we can abound in every good work.
What do you dream of—for you— and for God’s glory?
First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio is part of God’s bigger story. Just as God used dreams and visions to lead, equip, and empower His people in Scripture, He continues to do so today. As we embrace the call to stewardship, let us envision the ways God wants to use us, equip ourselves for His mission, and trust in the empowerment of the Holy Spirit to carry out the work He has prepared for us. Together, we can make a lasting impact for the kingdom of God— right here in San Antonio and beyond.
Grace and peace, Bob Fuller

A Beautiful Time with God: Women's Fall Retreat
The women of First Presbyterian Church gathered at TBarM Retreat Center during the first weekend of October for a weekend of worship, teaching, fellowship, and rest. Almost 100 women dove deep into God’s Word as Mary Willson Hannah, from Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis, taught on Exodus 15-17, highlighting the provision and love of God for His people.
It was a powerful experience listening to the voices of women sing praises to our Lord, led by Kara Weaver from our FPC Modern Worship Band. After each session, participants broke into small groups to further delve into the Scriptures and apply their teachings to daily life. These intergenerational groups fostered connections among women who might not typically meet on a Sunday morning.
Each evening, attendees were surprised with gifts left at their doors, aimed at ensuring a good night's sleep and a restful retreat experience. During free time, women engaged in activities like pickleball, hiking, Mahjong, and shopping in Gruene.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the entire retreat planning committee, including Holly Youngquist, Judy Kruger, Candy Wagner, Natalie Jansen, Hallie Klunder, Sarah Bonn, Julie Patterson, and Heather Beltrame.
To God be the GLORY for such an amazing weekend with our sisters in Christ.
Rev. Becky Prichard Associate Pastor for Christian Education
In the sermon series for this fall of 2024, we are reminded of the incredible promises of God as revealed in the visions and dreams He gave His servants Abraham, Joseph, Ezekiel, and John. Fabulous blessings are promised to Abraham—a homeland, countless descendants, and the magnificent purpose of blessing all the nations! Joseph, who was betrayed and sold into slavery by his own jealous brothers, rose to a high management position among his captors; that very position allowed him to rescue his family and nation! Ezekiel, in despair as he saw the rebelliousness of God’s people, was given a vision of deliverance and restoration! John, faithful, exiled John, was given a vision of such beauty—the new Jerusalem, the Holy City, where God actually lives with His people, and death, pain, and mourning are things of the past.
We are Created to Dream—whether it’s in the form of such divine visions and dreams or through the desires and aspirations placed in our human hearts. This ability to dream is rooted in our very nature. The Creator-God who made us in His image (His workmanship, His poem—Ephesians 2:10) made us to be creative as well. Under the direction of the Holy Spirit and following His Word, we imagine things can be different; we solve problems; we repair and build; we see a new direction; we point to the hope, the new way of living, that comes from our Savior.
The God who blesses us so richly, who rescues us from famine, who raises dry bones, who promises us life with Him in the beautiful New Jerusalem, also calls us to dream dreams that bless others. In the coming year, we’ll be exploring what God is calling First Presbyterian Church to be and do through our new 10-year strategic plan. Prepare to harness your God-given dreams and all the good gifts God bestows upon us so we can, collectively, be an overflowing fountain of blessing to one another, our city, and our world!
In gratitude, Your FPC Stewardship & Finance Committee

Children’s Sunday Celebration
Workshops, Serving in Worship, & New Bibles
Sunday, October 20, 2024, was a wonderful day in the life of the church. The church celebrated Children's Sunday, with children all over the campus serving as ushers, greeters, and liturgists. It was such a joyful experience for all who served.
A cute video by Robynn Amy and Edwin Stephens was shown, highlighting the children and the children's ministry. A Bible class for parents of 2-year-olds, as well as for 3rd graders and their parents, was offered.
Pastor Becky presented the 2-year-old children with a copy of The Rhyme Bible Storybook, and Pastor Bob presented the 3rd graders with their very own Bibles.
Thank you, First Presbyterian Church, for this opportunity to serve the church and the Lord. We look forward to serving again soon.

President's Letter Nov. 2024
“But thanks be to God, who gives us victory through Lord Jesus Christ.” 1 Corinthians 15:57
Greetings from the Women of the Church! With grateful hearts, we enter the month of November—a month that invites us to reflect on God’s amazing generosity and provides us with opportunities to pour out His love on family and friends around Friendsgiving and Thanksgiving tables. Thanks be to God!
This past month was filled with learning and laughter at an array of women’s gatherings, and November provides similar opportunities with Circles and the WOC Fall Legacy Luncheon on November 4th. We can’t wait to learn more about lifelong discipleship from Pastor Emily Scates at the luncheon. I hope you are able to join us! Currently, all Bible Study Circles (aka small groups) meet during the day. Following God’s nudges, we are forming an evening Circle in January. If you would like more information, please let Pat Brodeen (pat@brodeen.com), Jean Swanson (dj_swanson@mac.com), or me know. Listen to that nudge—God is on the move!
I am truly filled with gratitude to be able to work alongside such amazing women here at FPC, who joyfully go about Kingdom business each and every day. Some of the highlights of our time together in October were:
The Women’s Weekend Retreat at TBarM at the beginning of October was incredible! The team who hosted and led the retreat (Rev. Becky Prichard, Holly Youngquist, Judy Kruger, Sarah Bonn, Natalie Jansen, Hallie Klunder, Julie Patterson, Sandy Moore, Candy Wagner, and Heather Beltrame) created a sacred space to worship in song (led by our gifted Kara Weaver), to deepen our understanding of who God is (through Mary Hannah’s excellent teaching on Exodus), and to share precious (including laugh-till-youcry) time together. What an absolute treat it was for the 90+ women of all ages and stages who attended. We thank you for that gift.
The Ladies’ Night Out committee hosted a fall celebration at the lovely home of Jill Peavy in mid-October, with Jill
serving as chair and home host. Hats off to that! We had a great turnout, and it was the perfect occasion to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Thanks to Jill, Ellen, Allison, and Emily, and those who brought delicious apps and refreshments to share.
The Fall Staff Appreciation Lunch, which honors all church employees, was wonderful! To Leah Butler and Martha Smith, who organized the meal and brought the feeling of fall inside with their colorful decorations, as well as to all of you who baked brownies, lemon bars, and cookies or made monetary contributions, many thanks. It was a lovely expression of the deep appreciation we have for our hardworking and gifted staff.
The Gift of Christmas committee of Judy Kruger, Susie Patterson, Sarah Bonn, Heidi McDonald, and Kelsey Smith is connecting covenant partners with those in the community needing assistance during the Christmas season. This ministry is an opportunity for families, friends, Sunday School classes, Circles, and small groups to get together to care for and share God’s love with others at Christmastime. Don’t miss out on bringing the love of Jesus into homes this Christmas!
Speaking of Christmas, mark your calendars for the Children’s Advent Festival on December 1st. Doing Christmas arts and crafts and providing snacks to the children in our church family is simply the best. Sticky paste fingers, chocolate-covered smiles, and glitter-filled hugs cannot be beat!
Happy Thanksgiving—I pray that God fills our hearts with His love and peace so that we may share it with everyone we encounter.
Peace in Christ,
Nancy Scheifele
President, Women of the Church bbnn.scheifele@gmail.com

Dear Family in Christ,
FIRST CUP READINGS
NOVEMBER, 2024
Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
1 Judges 1-2; Deuteronomy 4:1-14; 6:10-7:6;
2 Corinthians 6:14-18
2 Judges 3; Deuteronomy 8-9; Psalm 50
3 Judges 4-5; Psalm 89
Depth of mercy! Can there by mercy still reserved for me? Can my God His wrath forbear? Me, the chief of sinners, spare? I have long withstood His grace, long provoked Him to His face; would not hearken to His calls, grieved Him by a thousand falls. Still for me the Savior stands, shows His wounds, and spreads His hands. God is love! I know, I feel; Jesus weeps, and loves me still. (The Hymnbook, no. 273)
9 Ruth 2; Leviticus 19:9-10; Romans 12:9-21; James 2:14-16; Luke 6:38
10 Ruth 3; Proverbs 3:5-6; 20:24; 31:10; Psalm 37
The steps of those whom He approves are ordered by the Lord; and though they fail, held by His hand, they yet shall be restored. I have not seen, though since my youth many years have fled, the saint forsaken, nor beheld His children begging bread. Mark well the perfect, upright man, as still his years increase; behold his life, and thou shalt see his journey end in peace. ( The Hymnbook, no. 422)
12 1 Samuel 1-2:11; Psalm 66; Philippians 4:6-7; Ephesians 3:20-21
13 1 Samuel 2:12-4:1a; Proverbs 3:11-12; 15:31-32; 23:13; Hebrews 12:1-13
14 1 Samuel 4:1b-22; Proverbs 19:18; Ezekiel 33:10-20; Galatians 6:1-10
15 Deuteronomy 17:14-20; 28; 1 Samuel 8
16 1 Samuel 9-10; Psalm 5
17 1 Samuel 11 (read again 1 Samuel 8:4-19); Habakkuk 2:18-20; Psalm 31
Grace and truth shall mark the way where the Lord His own will lead, if His word they still obey and His testimonies heed. For thy name’s sake hear Thou me; for Thy mercy, Lord, I wait. Pardon my iniquity, for my sin is very great. He who walks in godly fear in the path of truth shall go. Peace shall be his portion here, and his sons all good shall know. They that fear and love the Lord shall His holy friendship know. He will grace to them accord and His faithful covenant show. (The Hymnbook, no. 372)
22 Psalm 2; Matthew 25:31-46; John 18:28-37; 1 Corinthians 15:20-28
23 Psalm 9, 10
24 Psalm 47; 145
The Lord is King! Lift up thy voice, O earth, and all ye heavens, rejoice! From world to world the joy shall ring, the Lord Omnipotent is King. The Lord is King! Who then shall dare resist His will, distrust his care, or murmur at His wise decrees, or doubt His royal promises? One Lord, one empire, all secures; He reigns, and life and death are yours: Thru earth and heaven one song shall ring, the Lord Omnipotent is King! (The Hymnbook, no. 83)

FIRST CUP PRAYER LIST
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26)
