Lent Soul Care

“When the early Wesleyan bands of Christ-followers got together in small group meetings, their first question to each other was ‘How is it with your soul?’ - Ruth Haley Burton, Author and Pastor

T

hat is a question that should bring us all to our knees. It did for me, when Barton posed that question to 2000 pastors and church leaders at our ECO National Gathering in early February.

Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller Senior Pastor

but I do the very thing I hate. … For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 19

One of the great dangers of contemporary life is a torn soul. Our lives and hearts are pulled in so many different directions, with so many different concerns, that sometimes we feel like we are being pulled apart.

Saint Augustine once wrote “When the joys of eternity call us from above, and pleasure in temporal prosperity holds as fast below, our one soul is in no state to embrace either with its entire will. Claimed by truth for the one, to the other clamped by custom, the soul is torn apart in its distress.”

Imagine your soul as a piece of paper. Work pulls you in one direction. Perhaps a family crisis pulls you in another direction. Competing responsibilities pull you in different directions. Maybe your heart is being pulled apart by the brokenness and poverty you see in our city every day or by concerns or fears for your children.

The problem is that, over time, our souls can be so torn and damaged by the constant tension pulling us apart, that we cannot repair ourselves. Have you ever tried to put a piece of paper back together? You can use tape, glue or staples, but it’s still going to be messy and it’s not really whole again.

Before you know it, your soul feels like a pile of scraps. Do you ever feel like you are being pulled apart?

The only one who can restore your soul is the one who made it in the first place. After wrestling with the tearing tension in his own life, the Apostle Paul finally gives up, and threw up his hands in surrender:

One of the greatest tensions we feel is the tension created when our priorities and identities compete with God’s priorities and our identity in Him. It seems that the life we want and the life the Lord wants for us are pulled in different directions. The Apostle Paul wrote, in Romans chapter 7, For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, 15

Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! (Romans 7:24-25) 24

is the one who pulls us together. She believes that solitude is a critical part of our soul health. Moses, Elijah, David, Paul, John and especially Jesus all show us the importance of time alone in communion with God.

So how is it with your soul? We need to pay better attention to the health of our souls, because if our souls are unhealthy, then our lives are unhealthy and we will not bear healthy fruit. The demands of the world and the expectations we have for ourselves will pull us apart if we do not pause and attend to our own spiritual health. As author Trevin Wax, has written, “If you are a follower of Jesus called into his service, remember that he called you—first and foremost—to be with him, not to work for him… Before proclamation comes proximity. Before the power comes the person.” In a busy church like FPC, we need to use this season of Lent to learn more about “being” with the Lord. Use this season of Lent to explore what it means to be with the Lord in worship, Bible study, in prayer, as you spend time with others, and as you serve.

GRACE AND PEACE, - REV. DR. BOB FULLER

Our kids dressed in their best country wear and boots, and for entertainment we were pleased to welcome the Jefferson High School Lasso team to perform for us and teach our little ones how to lasso in the courtyard. These high school girls expressed their thanks for a warm welcome to our church that morning. Bravo First Pres - this is how visitors should feel. All in all, the kids had a great morning, and it was so encouraging to see children come to church and to have fun with their community of friends from our family. Thank you to the tremendous Children’s Committee, who volunteered their time and donated items for breakfast. A special thanks goes to their spouses who helped cook bacon outside! CONTINUED HOPE FOR HAITI

T

he small island nation of Haiti has experienced tremendous suffering through several natural disasters, compounded with political unrest for several years. In the last decade, we’ve read reports of earthquakes, hurricanes, and health epidemics, not to mention fuel shortages, riots, and school closures in the recent news. If one did not know the hope found in Christ, it would be easy to hear “Haiti” and only see darkness. There has, however, been a light in Haiti, brought by the faithful ministry of Rev. Delfils and the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Haiti since 2010.

RPC Haiti, located in Port-au-Prince and La Gonave, is a small but growing community of faith that stands firm in its vision "Though we may live on slippery ground in a country to plant and nurture reformed full of wicked people, our God is always faithful to Presbyterian churches so that his Church. He promises in Isaiah 54:10: “Though the they are self-sustaining, selfmountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet governing, and self-propagating. They pray, and invite us to walk my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my alongside them in partnership, for covenant of peace be removed, says the Lord who has peace in Haiti, so that the Church compassion on you.” With our covenant Lord we stand may continue to meet, hear the firm, even on a slippery land!" gospel, and share a message of true hope, reconciliation, and – Rev. LOVING THE WORLD

Church has been blessed to partner with RPC Haiti since 2016, after being introduced to their ministry through a youth mission trip to the area. We are able to celebrate with RPC Haiti, and praise the Lord for His faithfulness, as we read of several new people joining the church, new baptisms, summer VBS programs hosting over 180 children, and several teaching/training opportunities to share the gospel and build leaders within the church. Furthermore, RPC Haiti continues to work on translation and publishing projects to provide resources to locals, and is nearing the official founding of a Presbytery in Haiti as they work with Reformed Missionaries in the country.

As we consider how we may be able to deepen our partnership with RPC Haiti, the first place to begin is through prayer. Pray for the people of Haiti as they continue to suffer hardships. Pray for the people of Haiti to hear and know the truth of the gospel instead of relying on the traditions and folklore centered upon voodoo practices. Pray for the Church to continue to be joyful and eager to worship the Lord! Pray for an end to the devastating political unrest. Pray for the completion of the formation of the local Presbytery and the multiplication of churches in the country. Lastly, we are invited to celebrate with RPC Haiti as we reflect on the Lord’s faithfulness in the midst of struggle. To learn more about RPC Haiti and ways to connect with them, you may contact Lindsays@fpcsat.org or visit http://bit.ly/RPCHaiti.

A Collaborative Effort To Strengthen San Antonio Families

WHO WE ARE San Antonio is a rapidly growing

and thriving city, yet the stability of its families is falling behind. As a result, crime rates, homelessness, and disease can increase. Decade of Family serves as a unifying force amongst our community leaders and organizations to combat the breakdown of families.

A Special Evening Sponsored by Laity Lodge Family Camp, Laity Lodge Youth Camp, First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, and Decade of Family.

Our mission is to empower families to grow stronger, generation by generation. e believe that strong cities are built by strong W communities, and strong communities start with strong families. By meeting families where they are, and offering assistance and encouragement, we aim to make San Antonio the Best City to Raise a Family by 2030. In this ten-year span, from 2020-2030, we will develop a comprehensive and collaborative strategy that provides families of San Antonio greater access to the help, advice, support, and encouragement they need that will serve the greater good of their families, our communities, and our city.

WHO WE HELP All families in San Antonio who are struggling with issues related to family dynamics, parenting, marriage, addiction, etc., as well as families who value the tools needed to continue providing a strong, loving environment for future generations. www.decadeoffamily.org

YoungLives San Antonio Central

Y

oungLives is an exciting ministry that reaches out to teen moms and their babies. We reach out to young mothers through a variety of ways called the 5 C's: Club, Contact, Campaigners, Childcare, & Camp.

Club is our "youth group" where we have fun games and prizes so girls can simply laugh and be a teenager. Contact work happens at school during lunch to build relationships and let them know we care. Campaigners is a more in depth Bible study to discuss how God is working and choices He wants us to make according to scripture. Childcare is the ministry to serve teen moms by loving their babies in a safe and encouraging environment while the mother can attend a variety of YoungLives activities. Camp is a unique opportunity to allow a teen mom and her baby to get away from the everyday pressures of life and experience adventure, friendship and hear life changing messages about the love of Jesus. This past year proved to have a lot of momentum for YoungLives. In addition to hiring a staff member to focus solely on YoungLives, there were many praises to be highlighted. • • •

• •

Both summer and winter camp were at full attendance with 10 girls, 10 babies, 4 leaders and several childcare volunteers. Our weekly club has about 30 students and 1012 teen moms in attendance. We had two very special Christmas events in December, a beautiful dinner and games for Healy Murphy girls and a candlelight Christmas worship service at Seton Home. YoungLives has begun to partner with AnyWomanCan to provide resources reaching the whole person. God was faithful to provide funds for a $10,000 matching grant! FIRST PRESS MAGAZINE 14

LOVING THE CITY The vision for 2020 and beyond is strong but we cannot accomplish great things without great people and churches to partner with. There are several prayer requests and vision strategies that will need the support of volunteers and leaders. •

Christina Via, YoungLives staff, salary to be 100% fundraised • New committee members and volunteers to rise up and use their God-given gifts to serve the ministry • New leader trainings to happen twice a year • Informational meetings to happen quarterly • Potential to add another YoungLives club in a different school/area of SanAntonio • Add campaigners program so girls have a chance to grow deeper in their faith • Each teen mom involved with YoungLives would have a mentor to walk with them through life's joys and challenges • An overflow of attendance at the 2020 YL luncheon with $80,000 raised • A $2,500 matching grant for camp to be fully funded We are so excited for what God is going to do in and through YoungLives this year. God is so faithful and will accomplish all that He desires. The support of volunteers, leaders and church partnerships is a crucial part of allowing teen moms to know they are loved and find success in life.

Flowers at First We look forward to Easter at First Presbyterian Church when the Sanctuary will be filled with Easter lilies. This form is for everyone to use as they remember loved ones with an Easter lily for the Sanctuary. Any additional revenue received from the donations for Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies over the years have enabled the Sanctuary Flower Committee to make special gifts to the church. Special gifts to the church include the antique candlesticks on the altar, the cross in the Griffith Chapel, the portrait of Louis Zbinden in the Zbinden Lecture Hall, antique chests in the Mauze Lobby, rugs in the McCullough Room and Narthex, chandeliers in the Geneva Room, new stoles for the ministers, new Bibles for worship and many other gifts.

Each year the congregation has an opportunity to remember a loved one or honor an individual by purchasing an Easter lily to be placed in the Chancel. If you would like to participate, the cost is $15 to reserve a plant for one individual or one couple. Your check should be made payable to the Sanctuary Flower Committee. Completed forms & payment may be mailed to First Presbyterian Church, c/o Sanctuary Flower Committee, 404 North Alamo, San Antonio, 78205-1918, or placed in the Sanctuary Flower mailbox in the workroom. Requests received later than March 29, 2020 will miss the insert printing deadline.

If you are considering giving flowers for the Sunday traditional services, the names of the flower committee are listed below. You may call them for information for the month you desire. Telephone numbers are in the church directory. It is never too early to reserve the Sunday you prefer, so please call as soon as possible. The listings must be available to the church staff one month prior to the committee member’s designated month. We are extremely grateful for the many members who have given flowers to enhance our beautiful church. Thank you. WELCOME TO SPRING

JUDY KRUGER

W

elcome to spring! Although we have many exciting events to look forward to this month, I am still thinking about the fun Ladies Night Out we enjoyed on January 28. As you can see in the photos, it was a beautiful evening at Paloma Blanca. The 100 women who attended were treated to a delicious dinner, great door prizes, and a wonderful opportunity to form and deepen friendships. We are grateful to owner and FPC member Richard Peacock for his generous hospitality and to his restaurant staff for their excellent service. Nina Jordan and Lellen Lane are busy planning

a special Staff Appreciation Luncheon, the second annual “Day in Old San Antonio (DIOSA.)” Many women have volunteered to bring food and decorations, and it promises to be a fun-filled day. If you would like to help bless our church staff, contact Nina Jordan at ninabjordan@att.net. Please mark your calendars for the WOC Spring “Fiesta of Faith” Luncheon on March 23. We are delighted to have author and speaker Jenna Lucado Bishop deliver the Lord’s message, “You Are Enough.” The luncheon cost is $20, and Julie Hill is taking reservation payments by check or credit card. You may also register and pay online at www. fpcsanantonio.org/wocfiesta. Please join us for this joyful event! The doors will open at Continued...

LOVING CHRIST

FIRST CUP READINGS MARCH, 2020 Dear Family in Christ,

First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.

Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8

Cast thy burden on the Lord, Lean thou only on His word; Ever will He be thy stay, Tho’ the heavens shall melt away. Ever in the raging storm, Thou shalt see His cheering form; hear his pledge of coming aid: “It is I; be not afraid.” Cast thy burdens at His feet; linger near His mercy seat; He will lead thee by the hand gently to the better land. He will gird thee by His power, in the weary, fainting hour; Lean thou strong upon His Word; Cast thy burden to the Lord. (Baptist Hymnal, #254) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
