A New Chapter of Ministry at FPC

REV. DR. BOB FULLER

Through 2024, we have been dreaming together about the God-sized dreams for our church, our families, and our neighborhoods.

As we step into the new year, I am excited to introduce The Next 10, our strategic plan for the next decade of life and ministry at First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio. This vision reflects our belief that the Lord has a purpose for us as a congregation—a vision rooted in the leading of the Holy Spirit and centered on the transformative power of Jesus Christ.

As you can imagine, a ten-year vision for FPC is going to be big and somewhat complex. I want to take this opportunity to summarize it below and give you a preview of what’s to come.

The VISION

We believe the Holy Spirit is calling us to become a catalyst for Congregational Discipleship, Community Transformation, and Church Collaboration. This is more than a plan; it is an invitation to join God in the work He is already doing in our lives, our city, and beyond.

At the heart of The Next 10 is our shared PURPOSE: To Enjoy Jesus daily so that all people encounter Him. This joy is both our foundation and our calling, shaping how we live and minister together.

The pursuit of our purpose begins with what the Apostle Paul calls the “renewing of our minds” (Romans 12:2). We believe that the Lord is calling us to a new way of thinking (PHILOSOPHY) by redefining what success looks like in our ministry. We will be measuring success in spiritual terms rather than by worldly values. As The Next 10 plan says, Our primary metric is to partner with the Holy Spirit to equip disciples to become disciple-makers who enjoy Jesus daily so that others encounter Him.

This vision is for our whole church, but it begins with personal transformation through daily PRACTICES. Just like athletes preparing for the season, we need to build new habits and new exercises into our daily routine to get us in shape for the race we are going to run (I Corinthians 9:24-27). Both our personal transformation and the transformation of our church practices will be built on five foundational PILLARS:

1. Biblical Centeredness

a. Seeking God’s Word daily over everything else.

b. Interpreting culture through the lens of Jesus.

c. Practicing the way of Jesus within a generational community.

2. Sacrificial Generosity

a. Surrendering our resources to God’s purpose.

b. Giving beyond logic, trusting God to provide.

3. Missional Collaboration

a. Finding God at work and playing our part in His mission.

b. Engaging brokenness locally and globally with the hope of Christ.

4. Kingdom Hospitality

a. Offering hope through kindness, listening, and joy.

b. Living transparently and building authentic relationships.

5. Community Stewardship

a. Leveraging our gifts for the good of San Antonio.

b. Praying for and supporting those who lead and serve our community. The Next 10 is rooted in Jesus’ command to His disciples in Matthew 28:1920: “Go and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” The ultimate purpose of the plan is to encourage, equip, and empower disciples—and disciple-makers—who will:

• Seek Jesus and His Word daily.

• Give with increasing generosity.

• Engage in our personal callings.

• Live in a generational discipleship community; and,

• Serve others with contagious joy.

Phew! That’s a lot to think about, and too much to absorb all at once. That is why the Strategic Planning Activation Team and I want all of us to begin thinking about (pondering) pieces of it at a time. Over the weeks to come, we are going to begin unpacking this rich vision together through sermons, gatherings, talk-back meetings, and small-groups.

Of course, we believe that the first step of this plan is to fall to our knees in prayer. This plan has been discerned and discovered through lots and lots of prayer, and the Strategic Planning Task Force is calling us to join together to pray for FPC. In support of this, the Strategic Planning team is organizing an upcoming regular evening time for prayer held at the church.

We also want you to mark your calendar for a special Sunday of unified worship on January 26 at 9:30 and 11:00, as we combine our services to launch "The Next 10" plan (more details to follow).

The dreams that the Lord is putting before us are not new; rather, they are the latest expressions of the Lord’s enduring vision for First Presbyterian Church. As we step forward, we do so on the foundation laid by generations who, through faith, followed Jesus and built this community for 178 years. In Philippians 1:6, God’s word assures us that “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

The Next 10 is more than a vision; it is a movement. Let’s step into “The Next 10” with faith, hope, and joy.

Grace and peace,

Pastor Bob

Deacons' Christmas

Visits

& Poinsettias Lift Spirits

During the month of December, the Deacons were actively engaged in spreading the joy of Christmas. They made it a priority to deliver more than 100 poinsettias to our at-home members on behalf of First Presbyterian. This yearly gesture has become a beloved tradition for the Deacons, as it allows for meaningful visits and fellowship that are eagerly anticipated by all. We would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our dedicated Deacons for their valuable time, genuine care, and thoughtful consideration towards our church congregation.

Finding Healing and Support

STCH Ministries Counseling, by an anonymous FPC Covenant Partner

Have you seen the notices about STCH Ministries offering various counseling opportunities? When Jenn Borges began forming the mental health team as part of Redeeming the Crisis that COVID birthed, they knew the response might be overwhelming. Affordable mental health care was desperately needed for many in our community. Little did I know that I would benefit from just this kind of program. First Presbyterian Church continues to partner with STCH Ministries to offer skilled professionals who are experts in the field, providing Christ-centered, low-cost counseling appointments.

When we received news that one of our adult daughters needed to come home for recuperation and to reset her professional goals, we decided it would be wise to welcome her home for a season to heal, seek advice, and get healthy. What we didn’t know was that I would also be seeking wise counsel during this time.

Before our relationship could become strained, I decided to make a call to this newly formed alliance of skilled professional counselors. Some counselors are working toward their final piece of supervised counseling hours before licensure. My husband and I were not strangers to receiving good counseling; years ago, when our older daughter was diagnosed with bipolar illness and substance abuse issues, my husband and I both entered a great Christ-centered counseling program to better understand this very unfamiliar world.

This situation was quite different. I saw the notices about the counseling on many FPC platforms. I left a message in mid-April, and the scheduler called me a week or two later to arrange appointment times. I found out that they had three churches and the STCH main office where sessions could be held; I chose the site

that was most convenient for me. STCH has multiple counselors to choose from, both male and female, with varying age ranges so you can find a counselor who best relates to your situation and needs. I chose one in a similar phase of life as myself, with adult children.

I gained more than I imagined in the time shared. Describing my situation and feelings was a huge part of the process. Listening to her good questions and not feeling rushed to give the ‘right’ answers was so helpful. I felt heard and safe to share in the setting. Several key takeaways are in use today. In difficult situations, I was reminded to take a breath or two, wait patiently, and listen carefully. We reviewed how important it is to make no assumptions, and ways to not let past hurts necessarily inform present situations. We discussed the true meaning of mindfulness in light of Christ. Holy Scripture is filled with moments where Christ’s mindfulness and presence were key to someone’s healing. For instance, when Jesus was walking through a crowd with a very intentional mission, he stopped to find out who had touched him. How tuned in was Jesus to every occurrence in his earthly life!

My counselor and I met for a few weeks; she was able to meet my scheduling needs. The cost was very reasonable for the 50-minute sessions. STCH Ministries is a completely donation-based ministry with no state or federal funding; they do have a recommended minimum donation of $40.00 per session (they will not turn anyone away due to finances).

Please take advantage of this great resource provided by our mental health team at FPC. I’m so glad I did, and my family dynamics are healthier because of tapping into this ministry. Visit stchm.org/familycounseling or call 833-837-8246 for more info.

The Season of Christmas with the FPC Family

Children Celebrate Advent & Christmas

Westminster Hall was brimming with fun and joy as we celebrated the first day of Advent. Children and their families engaged in a variety of activities, including crafting Advent wreaths and ornaments, getting their faces painted, and decorating cookies. Laughter filled the room, and everyone had a wonderful time. The children’s choir sang beautifully, while both child and adult pianists performed, creating a festive atmosphere throughout the event. The volunteers did an amazing job setting up, running, and taking down the event. It couldn’t have happened without all their help. Thanks to everyone who came and participated, and to all the volunteers who assisted.

The festivities continued on December 8 with the Children’s Christmas Pageant, where the children truly excelled in portraying the birth of Christ. The tiny mice scurried in first, soon joined by a herd of little sheep. Mary and Joseph successfully reached Bethlehem, finding a cozy stable for the baby’s birth. Angels and stars radiantly declared, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and goodwill to men.” Shepherds eagerly spread the joyous news, while the Magi came to honor the Christ child. The entire Sanctuary was illuminated with joyful faces, both in the pews and up at the front of the church.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for allowing the children to be part of this worship experience. A special thank you to all the children and volunteers who participated, bringing this good news to First Presbyterian Church. Your sweet presence was so appreciated. It was a glorious morning, and all the praise goes to our Lord and Savior, Jesus.

Many thanks and blessings,

Christmas with

Our Annual Student Ministry Christmas Party was totally epic! Picture this: a room packed with great people, tasty food, and all the holiday vibes. It was the perfect mix of laughter and connection, bringing us closer together in the most authentic way.

We played some hilarious Christmas games that had us all in stitches, and our legendary white elephant gift exchange was full of unexpected surprises and laughs. And who could forget the crazy faux snowball fight? It was pure chaos in the best possible way, with everyone diving into the fun and laughter echoing in every corner. Plus, seeing the ministry leaders dressed up as elves was the cherry on top. They totally rocked those outfits, adding an extra dose of holiday spirit to the night!

I can’t express how grateful I am for your constant support and encouragement as we journey alongside our middle and high schoolers. Your prayers and involvement are the heartbeat of what we do, making a real difference as we help these amazing young people grow in their faith and discover their own unique paths with God.

Keep being awesome,

President's Letter Jan. 2025

“His divine power has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence,” 2 Peter 1:3

With the celebration of Christmas fresh in our minds and hearts, we begin the New Year. May this be a time of renewal for each of us as we continue to grow in our knowledge of God.

The Christmas season was filled with opportunities to serve our communities and one another in the name of Jesus. My heart is full of gratitude for the women who have so lovingly been the hands and feet of our Lord during the Christmas season.

Gift of Christmas – Thank you to Judy Kruger, Susie Patterson, Sarah Bonn, Heidi McDonald, and Kelsey Smith who connected over 20 families from the House of Neighborly Services with church volunteers. Thank you to everyone who generously and thoughtfully donated needed items, gifts, and Christmas cheer to these families’ homes.

House of Neighborly Service – Thank you to Kathy Scruggs, Joy Fuhrmann, Marianne Ryan, Kelly Strange, and all WOC Circles and members who donated books, games, treats, and diapers for the students, seniors, and staff at the HNS Center.

PCHAS's Angel Tree and Christmas Party – Thank you to Suzanne West, Morgan Fuller, and Sallie Guy for participating, along with all WOC members, to adopt over 20 children and young adults transitioning out of foster care and to help host the annual Christmas party on the PCHAS campus. It was such a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas.

Two Morningside Manor Christmas Parties – Thank you to Mary Medford, Kathy Serrano, and Karla Keahey for hosting parties with homemade cookies prepared by our Circles, singing by the Children’s Center students, lessons by Rev. Scott Simpson and Rev. Dr. Joe Moore, and warm fellowship with the residents. The parties were a highlight of the season for many!

Christmas Eve Reception – Thank you to Shelley Bass, Jean Swanson, Karin Gabrielson, Sheila Figueroa, Suzanne Thomas, Pat Krueger, Natalie Scheifele, and all Circle Members who organized, provided delicious food, and served as hostesses at the annual dinner honoring our pastors, choir, and staff. Over ninety meals were enjoyed throughout the evening!

As we begin the New Year, we look forward to several upcoming events:

Winter Ladies Night Out Dinner on Tuesday, January 28 at 6:00 PM at Paloma Blanca. Jill Peavy and her committee are working on the details, and reservations can be made online or in person at the table in the Mauze Lobby on Sunday mornings in January. We want all women to attend, so please know assistance with the cost is available.

WOC Spring Luncheon on Monday, March 31 will feature a surprising and inspiring story of how one woman’s willingness to disciple new believers had an amazing impact on thousands of lives on at least two continents. You won’t want to miss it!

The WOC Circles will begin the new year with a Bible Study following the Sunday Sermon Series. The Sermon Scripture passage will be studied through questions and discussions written for us by Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller. The Circle calendar is on the next page, so please join us for study, fellowship, and service.

An Evening Women’s Circle is forming. If you are interested in more details, please contact Wendy Garcia at WendyGarcia@satx.rr.com. We are seeking input on the most convenient day of the week and time for everyone.

Finally, thank you to everyone who purchased the WOC 2024 ornament. Your support is greatly appreciated!

FIRST CUP READINGS

JANUARY 2025

Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch

Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8

Break, my tongue, such guilty silence! Sing the Lord who came to die. From the highest throne of glory to the cross of deepest woe, all to ransom guilty captives; Flow my praise, forever flow!
