EXTRA-ORDINARY:

The Ordinary and the “Extra” in Christmas

“Away in a manger, no crib for a bed…”

There is nothing more ordinary across human experience than the birth of a child—yet nothing more miraculous. Every birth is at once familiar and wondrous.

But if we look past the nostalgia and imagine the scene of that first Christmas night, it becomes clear that nothing about that night was routine: A young mother, a weary journey, a borrowed stall, and a makeshift crib—even by first-century standards, sending a full-term, firsttime mother on an overnight donkey ride to an obscure village—with little information, no reservations, and no clear plan—would be unsettling at best. From the moment of the angel’s announcement to Mary, through Joseph’s dreams, to the astonishing birth itself, nothing about the coming of Christ fits neatly into what we would call “ordinary life.” Beneath the surface of that quiet night, God was doing something utterly extraordinary.

The first Christmas was the dawn of a new creation. Into a weary, broken world God spoke a decisive word, and everything changed. Heaven and earth joined in a new way; humanity’s relationship with God was renewed; and the old order began to pass away. A child was born, but more than that—the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

The incarnation is God’s chosen way of sealing His covenant love with humankind. God chose to come not with options or alternatives, but in a

single, specific, deeply personal way. He came as one of us—inviting, not forcing, us to follow Him.

Why did He choose this way? We could spend our days questioning, analyzing, or speculating. Or we could simply respond in faith, receiving the mystery as a gift. God has blessed us with deep intellect, curiosity, courage, and imagination. But He has also called us to obedience—obedience not to our own anxieties or our culture’s demands for explanation, but to His voice alone. The extraordinary event of Christmas calls us to trust, respond, and walk with Him.

“Hark! The herald angels sing, glory to the newborn King!”

On that first Christmas morning, the heavens opened, angels rejoiced, shepherds trembled, and kings journeyed to worship. Emmanuel— God with us—was born. Everything old was made new again.

This Advent, we continue building on the theme of our fall sermon series, Along the Way—Discipleship in the Ordinary. For several months we have explored how God forms disciples not only in life’s big moments but in the small, everyday steps of the journey— along the road, around the table, in ordinary relationships, and through daily faithfulness.

As we enter Advent, we discover that Christmas itself is the ultimate example of God at work in the ordinary. God did not choose a palace, a throne, or a royal courtyard. He chose a manger, a village, a young

couple, and shepherds keeping watch at night. The extraordinary broke into the ordinary in the most unexpected ways.

Our Advent sermon series, EXTRAORDINARY: The Ordinary and the “Extra” in Christmas, will explore how God’s extraordinary grace meets us in simple moments, humble lives, and familiar stories.

November 30 – Advent I: Extraordinary Promise

We begin by remembering the astonishing promises spoken by the prophets and fulfilled in Christ (Luke 24:44–45). We will celebrate Communion as we reflect on God’s unwavering faithfulness.

December 7 – Advent II: An Extraordinary Story

“Once upon a time… in the days of Caesar Augustus…” A well-known story, yet never ordinary. At 9:30, our entire congregation will gather for the Children’s Christmas Pageant in the Sanctuary.  At 11:00, we will reflect on the wonder and depth of Luke’s Christmas narrative.

December 14 – Advent III: Extraordinary People

God worked through an ordinary carpenter and a young woman from Nazareth to bring forth the Savior. We will look at Mary and Joseph’s faith and obedience through readings from Luke 1 and Matthew 1.

December 21 – Advent IV: The Word Is Love

Our Special Music Sunday will echo the song of the angels. A short meditation will celebrate Christ as the Word made flesh—God’s extraordinary love entering the world.

December 24 – Christmas Eve: Extraordinary Night

We gather to remember the night when heaven touched earth, glory filled the skies, and ordinary shepherds became the first witnesses of the Messiah (Luke 2; Matthew 2).

December 28 – One Service (11:00 AM)

A single service in the Sanctuary as we rest in the glow of Christmas and step into a new year together.

We warmly invite you to be a part of our Advent celebration at First Presbyterian Church San Antonio. Whether you have been here for years, are new to our community, or are returning after time away, this is a season to draw near, rejoice, and remember. Come walk with us toward Bethlehem, where the extraordinary love of God breaks into our ordinary lives—again and again.

Come, and let us journey together toward the manger.

Grace, peace, and merry Christmas!

In a world that feels weary and divided, the Kingdom vision of Jesus invites us into a new way of being, one that resists fear and restores hope. The Kingdom of God is not a distant ideal but a living reality that confronts our world, reshapes our loves, and calls us to live under the gracious rule of Christ.

This February, acclaimed New Testament scholar and author Dr. Nijay K. Gupta will lead us through Scripture and the witness of the early church to discover Jesus’ vision of the Kingdom. Together, we’ll explore what it means to bear faithful witness to Christ in a fractured and anxious world, to see how our citizenship in the Kingdom of God redefines success, power, and belonging, and to reflect on the posture Christians are called to embody as we engage with the surrounding culture.

This lecture series invites you to draw near to the heart of Christ’s Kingdom and to consider what it means to follow Jesus, as our Redeemer-King, in everyday life – at work, at home, and in the public square.

About the Speaker:

Nijay K. Gupta (PhD, University of Durham) serves as Julius R. Mantey Professor of New Testament studies at Northern Seminary and is an award-winning and best-selling writer. He has published more than twenty books including A Beginner’s Guide to New Testament Studies, Paul and the Language of Faith, Tell Her Story: How Women Led, Taught, and Ministered in the Early Church, and Strange Religion: How the First Christians Were Weird, Dangerous, and Compelling. Dr. Gupta co-chairs the Pauline Theology seminar of the Institute for Biblical Research and serves as a senior translator for the New Living Translation. He has bylines with Christianity Today, Christian Century, Outreach Magazine, and Fathom Magazine and also serves on the theological advisory committee for YoungLife USA. He lives in Portland, Oregon with his wife, Amy, and they have three amazing teenagers.

Join us for the Z-Talks dinner and keynote on Friday, February 6, teaching sessions on Saturday, and the combined worship service and sermon on Sunday, February 8.

The Zbinden Center for Biblical Leadership invites you to challenge yourself through theological study in a friendly, community-based setting. Participants engage in a course of study within a learning community, aimed at deepening both understanding and practice of solid theology.

Next Level Sunday School: Obadiah Spiritual Warfare in the Prophets

Kick off 2026 by diving into one of the most overlooked books in the Old Testament. In this three-week Next Level class, Dr. Michael Charlton introduces the prophecy of Obadiah—a powerful message that God holds nations and people accountable, remains sovereign over history, and works even in the midst of suffering.

We’ll explore the history of the Edomites, the spiritual-warfare dynamics of their transgression against Israel, and how God can bless the world in the middle of conflict and judgment. With only 21 verses, Obadiah offers a surprisingly rich opportunity to deepen your Bible knowledge in the new year.

Dates: Sundays, January 11, 18 & 25

Time: 9:30 AM

Instructor: Dr. Michael Charlton

Course Outline:

• Week 1: Introduction to Obadiah Who were the Edomites and what did they do?

Celebrating Alpha Fall 2025!

Alpha is a space for people to gather in fellowship, deepen their faith, and explore some of life’s toughest questions. On Tuesday, November 6, the group held its second-to-last session of the fall—and it was a joy-filled evening.

The Women of the Church cooked and served a wonderful meal, and the group enjoyed rich conversation, teaching, and table fellowship. Along the way, new relationships have formed, faith has grown, and we even celebrated a baptism!

Do you know someone who might benefit from Alpha? Contact Elizabeth Crites at crcrites@aol.com And as we look ahead to Spring 2026, we’re planning a new follow-up discipleship course for those ready to keep building a strong foundation of faith—so keep an eye out for more details in the new year.

Men’s Quarterly Dinner & Chili Cook-Off

The men of the church gathered at the Rogers' home for quarterly Men’s Dinner, sharing a great night of food and fellowship. The highlight was a lively Chili Cook-Off, featuring fourteen competitors—each bringing their own take on a classic bowl of chili.

The judges made their rounds, sampling every entry and enjoying the creativity and storytelling behind each pot. After much deliberation, Justin Rice was named this year’s Chili Cook-Off Champion, earning top marks.

It was a wonderful evening. We look forward to the next quarterly dinner and the continued fellowship it brings!

President's Letter Dec. 2025

In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people ... ." Luke 2:8-20

There was great joy as we gathered together Family Style for the Women of the Church Legacy Luncheon on the first Monday of November. Each table was unique with its own set of china or pottery, and sparkly WOC waitresses delivered a large garden salad along with an amazing bowl of rice, mushrooms, and roasted chicken to be passed around each table family-style.

With that warm meal in our bellies, we drew even closer together as we listened to Emily Peeples’ presentation, “The Lines Have Fallen for Me in Pleasant Places.” Emily shared how this church—and God’s people in it—have touched her life so lovingly when she needed it most. Her stories were poignant and peppered with humor, dear friendships, and God’s providential hand.

The promotional materials for the luncheon, featuring Deborah Rogers’ painting of a crazy quilt—with different fabrics and shapes sewn together by God’s love—were a perfect representation of our church family that day. And to think that Emily was asked to speak only weeks beforehand because our long-scheduled speaker, Sallie Guy, had to bow out due to health concerns. Praise God, Sallie is now doing great.

If you missed the luncheon, you can find Emily’s presentation (and don’t miss David’s introduction!) on the church website at www.fpcsanantonio.org/blog/fall-legacyluncheon/

We will join the Friday Singers, children from the Children’s Center, and several ministry staff members to entertain and serve the residents of Morningside Manor at Christmas parties we host each year. The residents, singers, and volunteers always have a wonderful time—and the cookies are incredible. We would love for you to join us. Contact Kathy Serrano at serrano_53@yahoo.com for more information.

Saturday, December 13:

WOC will support a craft project at the PCHAS Christmas party, helping the children make photo ornaments that will be treasured for years to come. You may also want to participate in their Christmas Kids program, where you can brighten the holiday of a PCHAS child by purchasing gifts from their wish list. Delivery date is December 7. Contact Suzanne West at swest1313@hotmail.com for information on either of these joyful opportunities.

The Gift of Christmas committee has paired twenty families from House of Neighborly Service with Sunday School classes, Circles, and small groups. These groups are selecting presents for each family member, as well as gift cards to grocery and department stores, and are looking forward to seeing the faces of those families as we bring the love of Jesus into their homes through connection, food, gifts, and Bibles.

Christmas Eve:

The Women of the Church will once again embrace the Choir and church staff who work so hard throughout the many services that day by hosting a lovely reception in the McCullough Room, with delicious food provided by the WOC Circles.

Of course, our Study Circles are continuing with the study of James. All of them would love for you to come and visit. Although everyone is studying the same book, each circle has its own flavor. Each is friendly and warm—and eager to welcome you.

I wish you all a joyous Christmas season full of His love!

Peace in Christ,

FPC Veterans Day Tribute

My dad served in the Army during World War II. Needless to say, every Veterans Day our family made our way to downtown Wilmington, Delaware, for the parades. I never complained— because I loved seeing the units in full dress uniform marching down Broom Street to the War Memorial to lay wreaths. Those memories still mean so much to me.

This year in KEYS, we celebrated Veterans Day with a special tribute video created by our media team—especially thanks to Robynn Amy for her outstanding work. You can view the video on our church website.

A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated and shared their stories—and to all who have served our country. We honor you and are grateful for your sacrifice.

Honored Veterans Featured in the Video:

• Ron Baker, Retired Colonel, United States Air Force – 32 years

• Dr. Fred Brown, Retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army Medical Corps – 20 years

• Harold Black, Retired Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army – 22 years

• Bill Chandler, Captain, United States Army – 4½ years

• Carl Cox, Retired E6, United States Air Force – 20 years, 1 month

• Eva Eckberg, Retired Colonel, United States Air Force – 30 years

One of my favorite Christmas memories is from A Charlie Brown Christmas, when Linus steps onto the stage and recites these verses from Luke 2:

8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Continuing a new tradition, we celebrated November birthdays in style with a Thanksgiving lunch prepared by our Kitchen Staff, led by Chef Maurilio Garza. We could not have found a better meal in any restaurant in town.

Dear Family in Christ,

FIRST CUP READINGS

DECEMBER 2025

In blessed memory of Sandy Sturch

First Cup has always come straight from the heart of our dear friend and Covenant Partner Sandy Sturch. Sandy created this devotional to help us build a daily habit of Scripture and prayer—reminding us that as we reach for our first cup of morning coffee or tea, we should also reach for God’s Word and our prayer lists. Each week begins with a prayer drawn from hymns—sometimes even from the obscure volumes in her personal library—offered to focus our hearts as we enter the daily readings.

This month, we celebrate with heavy hearts Sandy’s heavenly homegoing. She often wondered why her husband and so many close friends were called home before her, and she waited patiently for the day she would join them. On Friday, November 14, 2025, Sandy received that call from her Heavenly Father. We grieve her absence, but not without hope, for our confidence rests in the power of Christ’s death and resurrection. We know that Sandy now experiences the joy of her salvation in ways we can only imagine.

May this spiritual discipline Sandy gifted us continue to strengthen you as you face each day.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8

Lead on O King Eternal, the day of march has come; Henceforth in fields of conquest Thy tents shall be our home: Through days of preparation Thy grace has made us strong, and now, O King Eternal, we lift our battle song. Lead on O King Eternal, We follow, not with fears, for gladness breaks like morning where-e’er Thy face appears; Thy cross is lifted o’er us; We journey in its light; The crown awaits the conquest; Lead on, O God of might. (Baptist Hymnal, # 417)

O Zion, haste, thy mission high fulfilling, to tell to all the world that God is Light, that He who made all nations is not willing one soul should perish, lost in shades of night. Proclaim to every people, tongue, and nation that God, in whom they live and move, is Love. Tell how He stooped to save His lost creation, and died on earth that man may live above. Publish glad tidings, Tidings of peace; Tidings of Jesus, Redemption and release. ( Worship in Song, # 356)

O holy Child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. His Kingdom cannot fail, He rules o’er earth and heaven. The keys of death and hell are to our Jesus given. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! He all His foes shall quell, shall all our sins destroy, and every bosom swell with pure seraphic joy. Lift up your heart, lift up your voice! Rejoice, again I say, rejoice! (Hymnbook, # 140)

FIRST CUP PRAYER LIST

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26)

Year-End Giving & Holiday Office Hours

Please visit fpcsanantonio.org/give for detailed instructions on how to ensure your gifts are credited to the correct tax year.

Please keep in mind that gifts made through a retirement account, stock, or mutual fund require additional processing time. The church’s Finance Office will be available by phone or email from December 27–29, 2025 to assist with any year-end giving questions:

Christi Burrell: 210-271-2755 or christib@fpcsat.org

Hector Flores: 210-271-2756 or hectorf@fpcsat.org

Please note that gifts initiated after December 23, 2025, may not be credited toward the 2025 tax year due to brokerage processing times and their holiday schedules. In such cases, those gifts may be recorded for 2026 instead.

We thank you for your generosity in supporting First Presbyterian and its ministries.

The Winston family and fellow Covenant Partner Connie Jones helped assemble Thanksgiving cards for APN’s holiday boxes— thank you to all who served with such warmth and creativity!
