To Know Him and Make Him Known
“Without Sufficient Memory, we are lost. With too much, we are captive.”
- John Meacham
This is a big year for anniversaries. In 2026, our nation will celebrate our 250th anniversary. In 1836, Texas declared its independence from Mexico (190 years ago), and on April 4, 1846 (180 years ago), Brazos Presbytery chartered “The Presbyterian Church of San Antonio, Texas” and sent out a group to plant the church.
It was circa May 31, 1846 that Reverend John McCullough and the little band of Presbyterians from Columbia, Texas, arrived in San Antonio. For six weeks they had been crossing the prairie—praying, studying, and worshiping together. We do not know the exact date they arrived in San Antonio or the exact date of that first Service, but we do know that on or around Pentecost— about six weeks after the chartering of the church and departure from Columbia, the little congregation that would become the First Presbyterian Church held its first Service in San Antonio.
At the time, San Antonio was a town of gamblers, desperadoes, saloons, and houses of ill-repute. McCullough described it as a “dilapidated town” of “semibarbarism.” They didn’t know what the Lord had in store for them when they got there. But they knew that
REV. DR. BOB FULLER
Dr. John Leith wrote that
The renewal of the church begins on a human level with an active remembrance. ...Remembering is closely related to the integrity of the church’s witness. When theology becomes preoccupied with relevance and frantic in its search for concepts and language that will appeal to modern people, it is in danger of losing its identity and therefore its power.”
2026 is a year for us to remember and reclaim our church’s heritage for the sake of the people and the families of the city. Our mission is to go to the homes, schools and neighborhoods of San Antonio to seek the lost, to heal the sick, bind up the broken hearted, to call people to repentance, and to welcome people into the Kingdom of God. It is to declare that God is real, that Jesus is alive, that He cares, and that He can make a difference in our lives now and forever.
As First Presbyterian Church celebrates 180 years of God’s faithfulness, we find ourselves not only looking back with gratitude, but also looking forward with renewed clarity and purpose.
This congregation has long shared a vision: to help more and more people encounter and enjoy Jesus Christ. We pursue this through authentic, joy-filled, grateful worship; through lives shaped and centered by the Word of God; and through compassionate, Christlike, personal service.
In Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” In a world that often measures success by numbers— attendance, budgets, programs, influence, or recognition—we are reminded to ask a deeper question: what matters most to the Lord?
What matters most is this: that we KNOW HIM and MAKE HIM KNOWN.
As we step into our 181st year, we are recommitting ourselves to that calling. We will measure the fruit of our life together not simply by what can be counted, but by what is transforming us. Are we enjoying Jesus—abiding in Him, trusting Him, walking with Him, and joyfully surrendering to the Holy Spirit—in ways so genuine and contagious that others encounter Him through us? Through our worship, our learning, and our
Jesus is Alive and that He had a Mission for them in San Antonio.
service, are people being drawn into the life-changing presence of Christ?
We also ask ourselves: are we willing to give our lives for the sake of the gospel? Are we merely consumers of religion, or are we people who are joyfully surrendered—sacrificing, giving, and equipping others to know Jesus and make Him known?
God has placed us here with purpose. We are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with all generations; to support families in need; to train future leaders; to plant churches; to collaborate with partners for the good of our city, our world, and God’s kingdom; to work for peace; to honor the spiritual gifts of men and women; and to faithfully steward all that we have—our time, resources, relationships, influence, and talents— for His glory.
Over the past 180 years, San Antonio has changed— and so has our church. Together, we have shaped this city, and in many ways, it has shaped us. Yet through every season, our purpose has remained the same: to share the truth and love of Jesus Christ.
As our beloved former pastor, the late Dr. Louis Zbinden, once said, “There are still people in San Antonio—and God still loves them.” That truth continues to compel us forward.
The mission is not finished. The call remains.
Now, in 2026, our risen Lord is drawing us back to our roots and sending us forward with fresh urgency: to go and make disciples, to teach the truth of God, to love Jesus Christ, to love one another, to love this city— and from here, to love the world.
This is our moment. This is our calling. And by God’s grace, this is our joy.
Grace and peace
Bob

Confirmation Celebration
Throughout this year, we have returned again and again to the truth that God is a relational God. He is a God who knows us, loves us, and invites us into relationship with Him and with one another. Confirmation is not just about what our students have learned about God, but how they are coming to know God personally and experience Him within the life of a community. We extend our gratitude to you, church, for committing to being a community that encourages, nurtures, and tends the garden of faith in the lives of these students and their families.
To our confirmation teachers and mentors, thank you for the time, energy, and intentional care you have poured into this year. Thank you for teaching with wisdom, for asking thoughtful questions, for listening well, and for creating a space where students can be honest, curious, and themselves. Your guidance has cultivated deeper wonder and discovery, and your presence has made a lasting impact on their faith.
To the parents and families, thank you for the steady, faithful ways you have walked alongside your students. Thank you for the conversations, the prayers, and the countless unseen moments that have shaped their faith, not just over this year but throughout their lives. You are helping lay a solid foundation for them to stand upon for years to come, and you are an invaluable part of the story God is writing in their lives.
To our students, we are so proud of you. It has been a joy to share this year with you, and it is obvious God is growing and forming you into who He has created you to be. As you move forward, remember that God knows you, loves you, and is with you. This is not the end of your faith journey, it’s just the beginning. Stay curious, stay rooted in community, and keep leaning into the relationship God is inviting you into. We are so grateful for you and excited for what lies ahead.
Blessings,
- Savannah Schatte Associate Director of Middle School and Their Families

President's Letter April 2026
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. –Romans 12:13
Spring is a season of hospitality—not only for San Antonio, but also for Women of the Church. Last month, Bryan and Timberly Eckelmann touched us with stories and lessons on Imperfect Invitations: Offering Hospitality as Ministry. They regaled us with tales of both success and mishaps from their years in ministry—from learning that perfection can dampen the fruit of hospitality to having a port-a-potty in their front yard (in Orange County!) during a church event due to a sewer issue. They emphasized that hospitality is not the same as entertaining; hospitality is an ongoing relationship. Their formal talk concluded by stressing that Jesus, and His death on the Cross that welcomed us into a relationship with Him now and for eternity, is the ultimate example of hospitality. The presentation then ended with a myriad of thoughtful questions from the floor.
That day, Westminster Hall was beautifully decorated with recycled blue and white tablecloths (from a WOC member’s daughter’s wedding), peonies, pearls, and blue pottery. Thank you to Catherine Whitsett and her committee for creating such a warm and welcoming space. Thanks also to Maurilio and Sierra for the Italian-style meal, once again served familystyle, with large bowls of pasta and Caesar salad passed around the tables with good humor. An extra thank you goes to the waitstaff, who brought out the dishes with big smiles and gracious flexibility. Thank you, as always, for the behind-the-scenes work masterfully done by Kyrenda, Dorothy, and their teams.
Also during that jam-packed luncheon, next year’s stellar slate of WOC officers was unanimously approved. The wonderful Jean Swanson will be taking the helm of WOC at the end of May.
On Tuesday, April 7, we enjoyed a wonderful Ladies Night Out at Joy Fuhrmann’s warm and beautiful home. Unsurprisingly, it was a joy! The appetizers
and desserts were lovely and delicious, and there were plenty of beverages to go around. Like most Ladies Nights Out, it was a multi-generational gathering full of laughter and sharing. Thank you to Joy, and to Kathy Timberlake and her team, for their work on this special evening.
Mark your calendar for the May Coffee on May 6, which wraps up the WOC year. It will be held at Robin Hudnall’s beautiful and conveniently located Alamo Heights home from 10:30 AM–12:30 PM, so even those who work can drop by. Parking is good, and we will also have our usual volunteer valets to make things easy for everyone. The food will be delicious, and the Coffee will honor the Past Presidents of WOC. There will be a basket for those who would like to donate to the FPC Children’s Center and KRL. All women Covenant Partners (and even those just thinking about it) are welcome. There is no charge.
Peace in Christ

Dear KEYS Friends,
March was a full and engaging month for our KEYS community. We explored timely and thoughtprovoking topics—from a look at Artificial Intelligence with Darryl Greer to insights from Madison Isler of the San Antonio Express-News. We also enjoyed gathering for our Birthday Lunch at The Cottage Irish Pub, celebrating those with March birthdays alongside a bit of St. Patrick’s Day fun. We closed out the month with a meaningful time together with partners from Successfully Aging and Living in San Antonio, focusing on ways to remain safe, connected, and thriving at home as we age.
We also celebrated a wonderful Easter Sunday as a church family! With 1,830 joining us in person and online, it was a joyful reminder of the hope we share in the resurrection. I hope you were able to be part of that special day.
As we look ahead to May, we have a full and enjoyable month planned. We’ll begin with Kyle Odom, a lifelong nature enthusiast with a special interest in backyard bird observation. We will also celebrate America’s 250th birthday with a special visit from George Washington.
Later in the month, we look forward to gathering for our May Birthday Lunch at Blanco BBQ and enjoying music from Brad Normendeau—a crooner in the style of Dean Martin (Dean himself was not available!). We will close the month with a Memorial Day program featuring our own Rev. Dr. John Kaiser, as we reflect together and hear from our resident Army chaplain.
Be sure to see the schedule for complete details on all upcoming KEYS gatherings—we would love for you to join us.
As always, Friday Fitness continues via Zoom, and Mahjong and Bridge meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays following lunch.
It is a joy to walk together in faith, friendship, and community through KEYS. I am grateful for each of you and look forward to the weeks ahead.
Grace and peace, Rev. Dr. Joe Moore
Assistant Pastor for Older Adults and Congregational Care

Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
1 Colossians 1:1-14; Ephesians 5:1-20
2 Genesis 1; John 1:1-4; Colossians 1:15-23
Living for Jesus a life that is true, striving to please Him in all that I do, Yielding allegiance, glad-hearted and free, This is the pathway of blessing for me. Living for Jesus wherever I am, Doing each duty in His holy name, Willing to suffer affliction or loss, Deeming each trial a part of my cross! Living for Jesus thro’ earth’s little while, My dearest treasure, the light of His smile, Seeking the lost ones He died to redeem, Bringing the weary to find rest in Him! I own no other Master; My heart shall be Thy throne. My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone. (Worship in Song, No. 333)
Holy Spirit, truth divine, dawn upon this soul of mine; Word of God, and inward light, wake my spirit, clear my sight. Holy Spirit, love divine, glow within this heart of mine; Kindle every high desire; perish self in Thy pure fire. Holy Spirit, power divine, fill and nerve this will of mine; By Thee may I strongly live, bravely bear, and nobly strive. Holy Spirit, right divine, make my conscience wholly Thine; Be my law, and I shall be firmly bound, forever free. (The Presbyterian Hymnal, No. 321)

13 Romans 7; 2 Samuel 11; Mark 14:26-38; 51-72; Psalm 32
A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify; A never dying soul to save, And fit it for the sky. To serve the present age, My calling to fulfill; Oh, may it all my pow’rs engage To do my Master’s will! Arm me with jealous care, As in Thy sight to live; And, oh, Thy servant, Lord, prepare A strict account to give! Help me to watch and pray, And on Thyself rely, Assured if I my trust betray I shall forever die. (Worship in Song, No. 190)

23 1 Peter 1; Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 4:17-5:21
O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end; Be Thou forever near me, My Master and my Friend: I shall not fear the battle If Thou art by my side, Nor wander from the pathway If Thou wilt be my Guide. O let me feel Thee near me! The world is ever near; I see the sights that dazzle, The tempting sounds I hear; My foes are ever near me, Around me and within; But, Jesus, draw Thou nearer, And shield my soul from sin. O let me hear Thee speaking In accents clear and still, Above the storms of passion, The murmurs of self-will! O speak to reassure me, To hasten or control! O speak, and make me listen, Thou Guardian of my soul! (The Hymnbook, No. 307)

30 Matthew 24; 2 Peter 3; 2 Thess. 1:3-12
O Lord, my inmost heart and thought Thy searching eye doth see; Wher-e’er I rest, wher-e’er I go, My ways are known to Thee. Each spoken word, each silent thought, Thou, Lord, dost understand; Before me and behind art Thou, Restraining by Thy hand. From Thee, O Lord, I cannot hide, Though darkness cover me; The darkness and the light of day Are both alike to Thee. Search me, O God, and know my heart, Try me, my thoughts to know; O lead me, if in sin I stray, In paths of life to go. (The Hymnbook, No. 129)

FIRST CUP PRAYER LIST
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26)
