Cars & Coffee Fellowship Fun (Pages 20-21)

“Congratulations, but Keep Studying!”

As spring turns toward summer, our congregation celebrates one of the great joys of the season: graduation. Across our church family, students are completing high school, college, and graduate degrees, stepping into new chapters of life filled with opportunity, uncertainty, promise, and calling. To all of our graduates—congratulations! We give thanks to God for your hard work, perseverance, and achievement.

This year, graduation has carried a particularly personal meaning for our family. My son, Bo, recently graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with degrees in Chemistry and Physics. He is preparing to begin graduate school in pursuit of a Ph.D. in Radiochemistry, with the hope of becoming a researcher in the field of nuclear energy.

As I have reflected on his studies and future vocation, I have found myself thinking often about power. Nuclear energy is one of the most remarkable powers humanity has ever harnessed. Yet there is a power infinitely greater than nuclear energy: the power of God.

During my recent “halftime” sabbatical, the words of Psalm 19 transfixed me. The opening lines of the Psalm speak of God’s revelation of Himself through the natural world:

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.”

—Psalm 19:1–2

REV. DR. BOB FULLER

The psalmist reminds us that creation itself speaks. The stars, the oceans, the laws of physics, the structure of atoms, the elegance of mathematics—all creation points beyond itself to its Creator. Scientific study is not the enemy of wonder; it is often the pathway into deeper wonder.

But Psalm 19 does not stop with creation. The second half of the psalm speaks about Scripture and the Lord’s revelation through His Word:

“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”

—Psalm 19:7

Nature can tell us that God exists and that He is glorious. But Scripture tells us who He is. Through God’s Word—and ultimately through the Word made flesh, Jesus Christ—we learn that God loves us, pursues us, redeems us, and calls us into His purpose.

As Bo has studied chemistry and physics, he has spent years examining the intricacies of the

created order. It is my prayer for him—and for all of our graduates— that even as knowledge of the natural world continues to grow through scientific pursuits, so too will knowledge of God grow through the study of Scripture and through a life of discipleship.

As graduates pursue knowledge about God in nature, I pray they will also make time for the God who is pursuing them.

Psalm 19 shows us that the Lord reveals Himself both through creation and through His Word because He loves us. We can learn immense truths about God through the study of creation—even at the atomic level. But it is through Scripture that we discover the greatest truth of all: that God gave His only Son for us; that Jesus Christ died and rose again; that the resurrection proves God has the power to transform our lives now and forever; and that the Lord has both a place for us at His table and a position for us on His team.

After all, one of the very first songs many of us learned was simple and profound:

“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”

Cynics often portray science and Christian faith as enemies. Yet the study of creation and the study of Scripture are not opposed to one another. To paraphrase John Calvin, Scripture is like a pair of glasses that helps bleary-eyed people see the world correctly.

Indeed, two of the greatest lay theologians I have ever known were scientists at the Savannah River Site National Nuclear Laboratory. One was a chemist; the other an evolutionary biologist. It was the chemist who once told me, “When scientists climb to the top of the mountain of knowledge, there they will find a theologian who has been waiting for them all along.”

To all of our graduates: you have been given a tremendous education and extraordinary tools for insight into the world God has made. The question now is: what will you do with them?

“What is the chief end of man? To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” (Westminster Shorter Catechism, Question 1.)

There is an even greater power than the power you will study, harness, design, teach, or apply in your chosen field. Do not neglect to study it. Become lifelong learners of the truth of God. Continue to seek the One who created both the universe and you—and who loves you enough to reveal Himself through both creation and His Word.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight. -- Proverbs 9:10

So, congratulations, graduates, but keep studying! Your church family is proud of you, grateful for you, and praying for you as you begin this next chapter.

Care & Concern Email Staying Connected Through Care & Prayer

April 30, 2026

Did you know that our church has 51 Deacons and several pastors who regularly visit Covenant Partners — those in the hospital, mourning the loss of a loved one, or living at home or in a retirement facility and unable to attend church regularly?

To stay informed about the needs of our church family, the Deacons and pastors often rely on the weekday Care & Concern email.

Through this email list, Covenant Partners or their family members can notify the church of prayer needs such as hospitalizations, surgeries, illnesses, or the death of a loved one.

The Care & Concern email is sent to Covenant Partners who have signed up to receive it. It allows friends and fellow church members to pray, offer support, and stay connected to the life of the church.

If you are not currently receiving the daily Care & Concern email and would like to sign up, the process is simple:

• Fill out the form at

• Scan the QR code below, or

• Contact our church receptionist, Pam Marra

from the Covenant Partner.

Young Adults Serve in Burnet County Flood Relief Effort

On April 18, members of FPC’s Young Adults ministry traveled to Burnet County to assist with flood relief efforts following the devastating July 2025 flooding that impacted communities across Texas. While Kerrville received much of the public attention, many surrounding areas — including Burnet County, San Angelo, San Saba, Junction, and others — also experienced significant damage and ongoing needs. Through hands-on service and practical support, volunteers joined local recovery efforts and reflected Christ’s love to neighbors continuing the long process of rebuilding.

Pray for Our Summer Mission Teams

Please join us in praying for:

• Team members preparing to serve

• Our ministry partners

• Those who will be served

• The Lord to be glorified through each mission

About YPM

The Yucatán Peninsula Mission (YPM) has partnered with FPC for decades, serving communities in the Zona Maya region of the Yucatán through education, health care, church support, service projects, and cultural exchange. Based in Leona Vicario, the ministry works closely with local churches and families throughout the region.

During this summer’s trip, the FPC team will assist with building and community projects, lead Vacation Bible School activities, and spend time building relationships with local residents and ministry partners.

This summer, teams from FPC will serve alongside ministry partners in Uganda and the Yucatán Peninsula. The Uganda Mission Team will be commissioned during worship services on May 24 before departing May 28–June 10. The Yucatán Peninsula Mission (YPM) Team — made up primarily of students and leaders from FPC Students Ministry — will be commissioned June 7 before serving June 20–27.

The congregation is invited to support these teams through prayer while they serve. Signup sheets are available in the Mauzé Lobby for those who would like to receive prayer updates and trip communications during the teams’ time abroad.

Appointed Key Civic Leader

On March 21, 2026, we had the pleasure of seeing our very own Ambassador Sichan “Tex” Siv assume the position of Key Civic Leader of the 149th Fighter Wing of the Texas National Guard. An “All Call” had been issued, and over 600 airmen gathered in formation in the unit’s hangar at Lackland Air Force Base. The temperature was in the 90s, and all present appreciated that the installation had been moved from the tarmac to the hangar.

Joining as guests of “Tex” were First Presbyterian Covenant Partners Bill and Susan Chandler, Rick Lane, and Rich Delano, as well as the Ambassador’s out-of-town guests, Clint and Linda Bulkley, Tom and Iris Thompson, and Ted Terrazas. Upon completion of the swearing-in ceremony, Sichan delivered a talk to the assembled airmen in which he recounted his journey from Cambodia to the White House, complete with two-dollar bills. A highlight of the day was the reveal of an F-16 stenciled with Sichan’s name under the co-pilot’s compartment.

In his role as Key Civic Leader, Ambassador Siv will work to promote awareness of the 149th Fighter Wing and the mission, policies, and programs of the armed forces. He will serve in a voluntary, advisory capacity and will be invited to participate in a variety of installation and unit events. Ambassador Siv will serve in this role for two years.

Following the formal ceremonies, the group visited the John Wayne Club located in the unit’s HQ. Ambassador Siv adeptly worked the room, paying equal attention to officers and noncommissioned airmen alike.

The 149th Fighter Wing was formed in July 1960 and today is a formal National Guard training unit for F-16 Fighting Falcon pilots. Much of its activity is integrated with the 182nd Tactical Fighter Squadron, also located at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland Air Force Base. The unit’s nickname is the Lone Star Gunfighters, with goals of Uncompromised Excellence and Mission Dominance. The current commander is Colonel Walter R. Ehman.

Welcome to Our Youngest FPC Covenant Partners!

On Sunday, April 19, 2026, we celebrated the good work that God has done in our Confirmation Class of 2026. Throughout this year, these students have learned and experienced that God is a relational God. One who knows them fully, and loves them fully, and invites all of us into an abundant life with Him and with one another. To our students, we are so proud of you as your faith story has deepened and taken form, shared so meaningfully in the faith statements you offered. To our parents, mentors, and teachers, thank you for your faithfulness, your intentional care, and the countless ways you have invested in these students. As a church, thank you for being a community that nurtures faith and walks alongside the next generation. This moment is not the end, but a meaningful step in a lifelong journey with God.

As we look ahead, we invite you, church family, to be part of what God will continue to do. If you feel encouraged or inspired by what you’ve seen here today, we want to invite you to be a part of Confirmation this fall. Confirmation is shaped through relationships, and we need people willing to walk alongside students as mentors. In the spirit of 1 Thessalonians 2:8, we are called not only to share the gospel, but to share our lives as well. Your presence can make an eternal impact as you listen, encourage, and are present in a student’s journey of faith.

WOMEN OF THE CHURCH

President's Letter May 2026

So do not fear, for I am with you: do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you: I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10

The Women of the Church year is winding down. On May 17, the new officers of Women of the Church were installed during the traditional service, and the lovely and indomitable Jean Swanson took the helm as president. You are going to love her leadership.

The Study Circles are completing their study of James. We have discussed its major themes of perseverance in trials, controlling the tongue, wisdom and humble living, favoritism, and the effectiveness of prayer. It is not an easy study, but the moderators have done an outstanding job using Max Lucado’s book, Grace Labatt’s notes, and FPC sermons to make the study impactful in our lives today.

If you have not been in a Circle this year but would like to join one next year, contact Jean Swanson or Wendy Garcia, and they will help you find a perfect match that fits your personality and schedule. It has been such an honor to visit the Circles this year. Even though they have mostly been studying the same book, each Circle has a different — but equally wonderful — flavor and will warm your heart as they teach and encourage you.

The last Women of the Church Council Meeting was held on May 4 and was followed by the President’s Luncheon under the arbor. I was so surprised by the wonderful gift of a framed cross lovingly crafted by Holly Younquist using jewels, pearls, and buttons collected from Women of the Church members. I will treasure its beauty and meaning for the rest of my life.

The Women’s May Coffee at Robin Hudnall’s lovely home on May 6 was beautiful and so much fun. Robin and her committee — Holly Youngquist and Blair Perry — designed the theme with Robin’s Rose Medallion china in mind, and the result was exquisite. Susan DeKoch, Kathy Serrano, and Karin Gabrielson came early to help plate the cookies, quiche, cupcakes, and sandwiches that various Women of the Church members made with loving hands. We even had men volunteers helping with parking. The dining room table was decked out with peonies, china, and wonderful food. Those brand new to the

church, as well as lifetime members, had a great time connecting, reconnecting, and laughing together. The May Coffee honors past Women of the Church presidents, and donations raised were given to the FPC Children’s Center and the KRL Resource Center.

I have survived! It has been a year since I started this position after a lifetime of extreme stage fright, but I am still standing after leading more than nine meetings and two large luncheons. Don’t get me wrong — I still do not rush to the microphone, but I no longer stare at it as if it were a coiled rattlesnake.

I could not have done it without a cadre of wonderful women who have encouraged me by giving their time, prayers, unique talents, and sparkle to WOC this year. My deep thanks go to them all. And to those of you who are being called to do something hard — do it. It is worth it.

My thanks also go to the church and ministerial staff: Kyrenda, who knows all the answers and is a delight to work alongside; Janey and her team, who made the McCullough Room and all the other meeting rooms beautiful for us each month; Maurilio and his team, who fed us with flair at the luncheons and many meetings throughout the year; the business office staff, who helped us with financials and a myriad of questions; and our partners in fun — the communications staff of Hank, Dorothy, Robynn, and Edwin, who make our ideas come to life and help bring people to each of our events.

Thank you. This church sure knows how to love one another deeply.

Older Adult Ministry

fpcsanantonio.org/keys

Dear KEYS Friends,

What a wonderful spring season we have shared together through KEYS. Over these past months, we’ve enjoyed learning, laughter, music, fellowship, and meaningful conversations as we gathered each Friday. From fascinating guest speakers to birthday celebrations and special programs, it has been a joy to see our community continue to grow in friendship and connection.

As this issue of First Press reaches you, many of our May gatherings will already have taken place, including our special presentations on backyard birds and America’s 250th birthday celebration with “George Washington.” We are still looking forward to two wonderful events to close out the month: music with Brad Normendeau and our Memorial Day program featuring our own Rev. Dr. John Kaiser, retired Army chaplain, as we reflect together in gratitude and remembrance.

As summer approaches, our regular Friday KEYS programs will take a seasonal break and will resume again in September. Even so, KEYS will certainly not disappear during the summer months. Our monthly Birthday Lunches will continue at local restaurants throughout the summer, with locations announced as plans are finalized. Friday Fitness will also continue faithfully on Zoom, helping us stay active and connected, and our KEYS Games gatherings—including Mahjong and Bridge—will continue as well, sometimes with extended fellowship time together.

One of the greatest gifts of KEYS is that it is far more than simply a schedule of programs. It is a community of friendship, encouragement, faith, and care for one another. I am deeply grateful for the way you continue to show up for each other with warmth, kindness, and joy.

Thank you for making this such a meaningful season together. I pray that your summer months are filled with rest, renewal, good health, and opportunities to stay connected with one another and with our church family. We look forward to gathering again for regular Friday programs in September.

Grace and peace, Rev. Dr. Joe Moore

Assistant Pastor for Older Adults and Congregational Care

FIRST CUP READINGS JUNE 2026

Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch

Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.

Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
