The Women Who Lead Us
“She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.”
- Proverbs 31:25 (NIV)
On Easter Sunday (which was awesome, by the way), we read together Mark’s version of the Resurrection story. Even though each version of the story is different in the Gospels, there are several common threads. The most important— “Christ is Risen!” Another very important theme is that the first people to hear those words and spread the good news were women. Mark says that “Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him.” This was not just an act of love and respect for Jesus. It was an act of bravery because they risked exposure as his followers.
This month, we celebrate Mother’s Day—a time to honor the women who have shaped our lives and faith with their love, wisdom, strength, and faithfulness. At First Presbyterian Church, we recognize that the calling to nurture, teach, lead, and disciple is not reserved for a few but is the shared calling of all God's people. In the spirit of our ECO Presbyterian values, we affirm the gifts and leadership of women in every sphere of life—including the church, the family, and the community.
REV. DR. BOB FULLER
At ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians, we affirm that both men and women are called and gifted by God for leadership in the church. ECO holds an egalitarian view of ministry leadership, meaning we believe that men and women are equally created in the image of God and are both fully capable, gifted, and authorized by Scripture to serve in any leadership role, including elder, deacon, and pastor.
The word egalitarian comes from the French word "égal," meaning "equal." In Christian theology, egalitarianism refers to the belief that leadership roles and spiritual authority in the church are based on calling and gifting, not on gender. Men and women are to serve alongside each other, sharing leadership, ministry, and mission for the glory of God and the building up of the church. In sum, ECO is an egalitarian denomination that celebrates how God uses the leadership of women and men together to accomplish His work in the world.
ECO’s essential tenets reflect this commitment:
• We believe that the Bible teaches the equal value and dignity of men and women (Genesis 1:27).
• We recognize that the Holy Spirit equips both men and women for every ministry task (Acts 2:17-18).
• We affirm that the mission of the church is best fulfilled when the gifts of all believers—male and female—are encouraged and empowered.
Throughout Scripture, we see women playing vital roles in God's redemptive story, including judges, prophets, church planters, and teachers:
• Deborah led a nation with wisdom and courage.
• Huldah was named as a prophet.
• Mary said "yes" to God's impossible calling to bear and raise the Savior of the world.
• Priscilla taught and discipled in the early church alongside her husband, Aquila.
• Phoebe is named as a deacon.
• Lydia opened her home and her heart to birth a new Christian community.
ECO honors this biblical pattern by welcoming and ordaining women to all offices of leadership and ministry within the church.
Mother’s Day invites us to celebrate not only biological mothers but also spiritual mothers—women who invest in the lives of others through prayer, mentorship, and discipleship. Some women may have biological children; others may have spiritual sons and daughters. Some may nurture through teaching, pastoring, leading ministries, or serving behind the scenes with quiet faithfulness. Every act of love and leadership reflects the heart of God.
In Christ’s Kingdom, the Spirit gifts and calls women and men alike to lead, to serve, to teach, and to make disciples. This Mother’s Day, we give thanks for the women who answer that call with courage, creativity, and compassion. We rejoice in an inheritance of faith that is passed down not only through family bloodlines but also through the relationships God knits together in His church.
As you celebrate this month, take a moment to encourage the women around you—whether they are mothers, grandmothers, sisters, teachers, mentors, or friends. Speak life into them. Remind them that their work matters, their leadership is needed, and their love reflects the very heart of Christ.
Happy Mother’s Day to all the women of our church family. We are grateful for you, and we celebrate the image of God reflected through your lives.
Grace and peace

Nonbelievers, believers without a church, new believers, and mature believers will benefit from this course. Each week, we’ll have a meal, watch a video, and talk in small groups. The videos share what Christians believe and let people share their own views without any wrong answers or judgment. Alpha is a chance to invite someone to learn about Christianity in a friendly, nonthreatening way.
INVITE SOMEONE TO ALPHA: BECOME A DISCIPLE-MAKER
Alpha is a unique opportunity where life's big questions meet open, meaningful discussions about God. We invite our congregation members to think about someone in your life—a friend, family member, or colleague—who would benefit from exploring faith in a welcoming, nonthreatening environment.
By inviting someone to Alpha, you take a vital step as a disciple-maker, guiding others to explore Christianity and their next steps in faith. We encourage you to prayerfully consider who God is calling you to invite to this transformative experience.
Join us in this mission of connection, growth, and discovery. Your invitation could make a lasting difference in someone's life. Use the prayer card on the next page and look for invite cards closer to the start of Alpha classes.
WHO IS GOD CALLING YOU TO INVITE?
1. Write down the names of at least three people you would like to invite to explore faith and discover Jesus.
2. Commit to praying for them regularly over the next several months with expectancy for how God might use you!
3. Invite them to Alpha. We'll have invite cards for you to use.
All ages welcome, shuttle available for those needing assistance between locations.

Confirmation Retreat Recap
We had such a fantastic time at Mo Ranch for our Confirmation Retreat! With perfect weather on Saturday for outdoor games, we enjoyed rich fellowship under the sun. Throughout the weekend, our dedicated Confirmation teachers—Jobe and Ashley Jackson, along with Mike and Ellen Meadows—led workshops where students explored their spiritual gifts and deepened their statements of faith, which they confidently shared before the Session last month.
One of the most special moments of the weekend came Saturday afternoon when two of our students were baptized in the Guadalupe River. Their families, Pastor Bob, our teachers, and the entire Confirmation class gathered to celebrate, underscoring the supportive community that is central to our strategic vision of fostering discipleship and transformation.
Saturday night wrapped up with a lively game of bunco that turned into an impromptu karaoke party, topped off with ice cream floats! The weekend was full of laughter, connection, and joyful reminders of how we grow together in faith. This is truly a special group of intentional, joy-filled students, and we were excited to celebrate them on Confirmation Sunday!

Confirmation Celebration
We have just concluded another incredible year of Confirmation! We're so thankful for our dedicated volunteers Jobe and Ashley Jackson, as well as Mike and Ellen Meadows, for faithfully guiding our youth. Confirmation provides an opportunity for our young people to deepen their faith and make personal commitments to follow Christ, aligning with our strategic plan's emphasis on personal spiritual growth and discipleship.
Through engaging Sunday morning classes, our confirmands explored Christian teachings, learned about our denomination's history and traditions, and discovered how to live out their faith daily. During retreats, students learned about spiritual gifts, prayer, and service to God’s kingdom. At the end
of the year, each student reflected on their learnings and experiences of God, crafting a personal statement of faith shared with the session.
We are thrilled to welcome these new covenant partners to our congregation. Though Confirmation has concluded, it marks the beginning of their journey with the Lord. Our church family has the important role of supporting and encouraging these young members as they grow in faith. We ask for your prayers and support as they embark on this path, celebrating God’s ongoing work in their lives and our community.
Blessings,

Celebrating a Year of Growth and Fellowship: Women of the Church
As the school year comes to a close, so does the current season of gatherings for the Women of the Church. May marks the final month of meetings and events until the fall, allowing us time to reflect on a wonderful year of fellowship and spiritual growth.
This year, our Circles have flourished under the leadership of dedicated Circle Chairs and Moderators, who have guided us in exploring sermon scripture passages through careful study. If you're considering joining a Circle, we encourage you to visit several to find your best fit, as each has its own unique character.
Pat Brodeen, who has admirably served as Vice President for Circles, coordinated smoothly with Circle Chairs to manage schedules and communication. Meanwhile, Jane Buchek, as our Moderator Chair, skillfully handled the distribution of study materials, enhancing our exploration of God's Word. We are deeply grateful for their leadership and contributions, and we extend a warm welcome to Lynn Thompson and Janet Pritchett, who will take on these roles next year, promising continued growth and community as part of our strategic emphasis on spiritual development and leadership.
Our heartfelt thanks go to all the Circle leaders for their wisdom, dedication, and the love they've shared in teaching and building up our community:
Suzanne Thomas, Lynn Thompson, Grace Labatt, Wendy Garcia, Kay Weber, Mary Fruge-Medford, Nancy Kerr, Jane Buchek, June Eubank, Patsy Johnson, Barbara Winship-MacDaniel, Mary Ellen Mauze, Meredith Park, Susan DeKoch, Grace Clouse, Janice Wilson, Ann Smith, Jean Swanson, Karen
Carawan, Suzie Simpson, Shelley Bass, Muffin Camp, and Mary Anne Smith.
In April, our Ladies Night Out was a joyful evening of fellowship at the home of Sharon and Stuart Seal, with a Fiesta theme—a fitting expression of joyful community building. Over 80 women gathered for laughter and connection, thanks to Jill Peavy and her team of Ellen Meadows and Sabrina Rios.
We look forward to seeing you at the May Coffee on May 14th at Deborah Rogers’ home, 403 Tomahawk Trail, 78232. This gathering is a chance to celebrate our past presidents and support the FPC Children’s Center Teacher Scholarship Fund and the Christian Dental Clinic. Please feel free to bring a friend; all women of First Presbyterian Church are welcome.
Finally, join us for the installation of the Women of the Church officers and committee chairs for 20252026 under President Lellen Lane, on Sunday, May 18th, at the 9:30 AM Traditional Service. Let us thank our incoming officers for answering the call to serve and lead, embodying our church's vision of nurturing spiritual leadership and community transformation.
We look forward to another year in the rich life of the Women of the Church, as we continue to grow together in faith and community at First Presbyterian.

Older Adult Ministry
I extend a heartfelt thank you to our leadership team for stepping in during my absence to attend three memorial services for our beloved Covenant Partners in late March and early April. It was a meaningful time, and I am so grateful for the support. Miles Pike was well-received during his time with us, providing fresh perspectives as we explored the impactful work of Comfort Café through the stories of those it serves. We hope to return soon and experience their welcoming hospitality once again.
As always, worshiping together throughout Holy Week was uplifting, and we are continually thankful for our church leadership. With Fiesta arriving later this year, we savored every moment, including visits from King Antonio and his court and the captivating Mariachi Las Alteñas.
As we wrap up our regular weekly meetings for the year, we have exciting plans ahead with our Birthday Lunches. Mark your calendars for June 20 at Chris Madrid’s, July 18 at Bobbies, and August 15 at Milano’s.
In May, we have a special treat for our Birthday Lunch—a trip to College Station to tour the Bush Presidential Museum. Join us for this adventure, leaving at 9:30 AM with a stop at Buc-ees, followed by lunch, a museum tour, and dinner in Bastrop on the way home. We’ll return to FPC by 8:30 PM. The cost is $65, but if your birthday is in May, celebrate with us at the reduced price of $50.
We look forward to continuing our journey together, fostering fellowship and community aligned with our strategic vision of nurturing connections and building transformative relationships.

FIRST CUP READINGS
MAY 2025
Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
Dear Family in Christ, First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
3 Acts 9:32-43; John 1:43-51; 5:19-27; 14:8-14; 1 Cor. 12:1-11
I cannot tell why He, whom angels worship, should set His love upon the sons of men. Or why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers to bring them back. I know not how or when. I cannot tell how He will win the nations, how He will claim His earthly heritage, how satisfy the needs and aspirations of East and West, of sinner and sage. But this I know, He heals the broken-hearted, stays our sins and calms our lurking fear, and lifts the burdens from the heavy laden. For yet, the Savior, the Savior of the world is here! (William Young Fullerton-1857-1932)
Come into my heart, O Lord Jesus, come into my heart I pray. My soul is so troubled and weary, come into my heart today. Come into my heart, O Lord Jesus, I need Thee through life’s dreary way. The burden of sin is so heavy, come into my heart to stay. Come into my heart, O Lord Jesus. Now cleanse and illumine my soul; fill me with Thy wonderful Spirit, come in and take full control. ( The Baptist Hymnal, 2008, #418)
“Almost persuaded” now to believe: “Almost persuaded” Christ to receive. Seems now some soul to say, “Go, Spirit, go Thy way. Some more convenient day on Thee I’ll call. “Almost persuaded” come, come today. “Almost persuaded” turn not away. Jesus invites you here; Angels are lingering near; Prayers rise from hearts so dear. O wanderer, come! “Almost persuaded”, harvest is past! “Almost persuaded” doom comes at last! “Almost” cannot avail; “Almost” is but to fail! Sad, sad that bitter wail, “Almost,” but lost! (Worship in Song, #233)
Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sins and our guilt; Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured, there where the blood of the Lamb was spilt. Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, freely bestowed on all who believe: You who are longing to see His face, will you this moment His grace receive? Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that will pardon and cleanse within; Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is greater than all our sin. (Baptist Hymnal, #200)

FIRST CUP PRAYER LIST
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26)
