BY REV. DR. BOB FULLER

After the last sixty days away, Morgan and I are overjoyed to come home to our FPC family. The Lord is good! From New York to the Rio Grande Valley, we have traveled far—visiting family, chasing birds, and embracing a different rhythm of life. In the quiet spaces between destinations, we discovered once again the steady faithfulness of God. Much of our time was spent outdoors, immersed in creation. We sought to pay closer attention to God’s pace—to the cadence of sunrise and sunset, to the stillness of wind across water, to the patterns of migration and movement written into the natural world. We used this season as a time to reconnect with God, His Word, and His creation in a deep and renewing way. Birding— watching and listening, waiting and noticing—became an unexpected teacher. Over and over again, as we observed flocks in motion, one truth became clear: we were eager to return to our flock.
The flock is a community. It exists for provision—the gathering and sharing of food—for protection and safety, for reproduction and nurture, for warmth and survival. It exists for efficiency, as birds draft off one another, using the complex aerodynamics of group travel to journey farther together than any could alone. Together, they travel. Together, they care for their young. Together, they endure. Together they thrive.
FPC is our Flock. Over the past two months, under the faithful leadership of Reverends Larry Coulter and Kevin Germer, you have been reflecting deeply on the community of Jesus. What a gift their leadership has been to our congregation. I am profoundly grateful for their steady presence and pastoral care. They have blessed our church and will forever be part of our FPC family.
As we return and begin the journey toward Easter, we will spend the next five weeks looking deeply at how the community of Jesus came together to be the body of Christ on earth. We will explore how the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ became the foundation of the church itself. Specifically, we will connect the story of the early church’s fellowship with the events of Christ’s Passion during Holy Week. The things the early believers did were not accidental; they grew directly from their memory of Christ’s suffering, sacrifice, and victory.
“They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul… And all who believed were together and had all things in common.” (Acts 2:42–44)
The early believers were devoted— not casually interested, but committed heart and soul—to the new way of life revealed in Christ’s death and resurrection. To be a “community of the cross” begins with devotion—devotion to the Word, to one another, and to the transforming truth of Jesus crucified and risen.
The apostles’ teaching centered on the cross and resurrection (Acts 2:23–24). Their fellowship was not social convenience but covenantal communion. Lent invites us into renewed devotion to the practices that form us in Christ.
Each week, we will see how the life of the early church mirrored the cruciform pattern of Jesus:
• Devotion
Cross-shaped discipleship.
• Fellowship
Cross-shaped generosity.
• Breaking Bread
Cross-shaped communion.
• Prayer
Cross-shaped dependence.
• Praise
Cross-shaped joy.
The cross confronts us with the reality of sin; the resurrection
reveals the power of God to overcome it. The bridge between the horror of the cross and the hope of eternal life is the love of God made flesh in Jesus Christ. He not only showed us the way to God; through His atoning sacrifice, He became sin for us so that we might become the righteousness of God (II Corinthians 5:21). He died for our sins so that we could be forgiven and restored to the fellowship with God—and with one another—for which we were created. The church is the community born of the Holy Spirit’s new birth. Like a flock, this community is not optional. It is necessary for our spiritual survival in a world that often pulls us apart and scatters us. We need one another for provision, protection, encouragement, and endurance. We need one another to draft together in faith, moving farther in Christ than we ever could alone.
On a personal note, thank you for granting Morgan and me this halftime season. I believe it was not only necessary but will prove to be a blessing for us, for our family, and for our church. My hope is that honoring Sabbath time reminds us all that rest is not weakness—it is obedience. Sabbath creates space not only for restoration, but for reflection and growth. It is in the quiet that God often does His deepest work.
We are grateful beyond words for this flock—for your prayers, your faithfulness, and your love. We are eager to worship alongside you again, to serve together, and to continue becoming the cross-shaped community Christ calls us to be.
I can’t wait to see you.
Grace and peace,

What a hoot and a holler we had when Cowboy Kevin finally made it to Children’s Sunday School on Sunday, February 8! After winter weather iced out our original January date, we were especially glad to gather on the first floor for our Yee Haw with Jesus morning— and it was well worth the wait.
Cowboy Kevin lassoed all of us in with his fantastic rope tricks, and our cowboys and cowgirls (ages 3 and up) got a kick out of jumping in and participating. With boots, hats, and plenty of Western flair on display, it was a joyful and engaging hour for kids and parents alike.
Special volunteer “wranglers” helped us corral the group and make sure every child made it safely back “to the barn” after the excitement. A big thank-you to all of our volunteers who gave their time and energy to make the morning run smoothly—we couldn’t do it without you!
It turned out to be a wonderful kickoff to rodeo season and a reminder of the fun and fellowship we share together.
It was a rip-roaring time. Thanks, y’all!

Z-Talks 2026 recently welcomed New Testament scholar Dr. Nijay K. Gupta, who spoke on what it means to live as Citizens of the Kingdom of God in a Fractured World. With humility, winsomeness, and warmth, Dr. Gupta translated complex biblical and theological concepts into practical wisdom for everyday discipleship. Together we wrestled with some of the more difficult questions of our time –politics, injustice, suffering – while returning again and again to the transforming hope found in Christ.
Participants described the weekend as both challenging and deeply encouraging. The event
created space for honest conversation, vulnerability, lament, and hope within our church community. It was a remarkable time of genuine connection. As people asked their questions and shared their experiences, we drew closer together, listening with grace and deepening our understanding of the burdens others carry. Throughout the sessions and discussions, we were reminded that the church is not a place for silence or abstraction, but a community where believers seek truth together and encourage one another to live faithfully and courageously in the world Christ calls us to serve.

On Sunday, February 8, members of First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio’s Traditional and Modern worshipping communities gathered together for a combined worship service on campus to hear from New Testament scholar Dr. Nijay K. Gupta, concluding the Z-Talks 2026 weekend. Earlier that morning, adults, families, and guests shared breakfast tacos in Westminster Hall, creating space for fellowship and conversation across our congregation. This time together reflected the heart of Z-Talks—bringing people into deeper connection with one another while engaging meaningful questions of faith and discipleship.

Thursday, May 7, 2026, will mark San Antonio’s continued observance of the National Day of Prayer—and a particularly meaningful one this year. In 2026, we celebrate the 40th anniversary of San Antonio’s observance, the 75th anniversary of the National Day of Prayer nationwide, and alongside these, our nation’s 250th anniversary and First Presbyterian Church’s 180th anniversary. What a powerful moment to reflect on God’s faithfulness across generations.
Each year, pastors, ministry leaders, city officials, students, military members, and neighbors from all walks of life gather as one voice to seek the Lord and lift up our community. While final details for this year’s central gathering location are still being confirmed, participants can expect a meaningful time of worship, prayer, and proclamation in the heart of downtown San Antonio.
The 2026 theme, “Glorify God Among the Nations, Seeking Him in All Generations,” is drawn from 1 Chronicles 16:24 and calls us to declare God’s glory and faithfulness across every generation.

First Presbyterian Church will once again host a Prayer Walk leading up to the citywide observance. This year’s route will be finalized once the main gathering location is confirmed, but the heart of the experience remains the same: moving together in prayer through our city.
Participants will gather at 10:00 AM at First Presbyterian Church (404 N. Alamo) for opening prayers before setting out together. Along the way, we will pause at key locations for Scripture, guided prayer, and worship, joining with others as we make our way toward the larger city gathering.
A shuttle will be available for those who need mobility assistance.
• 10:00 AM – Gather and opening prayer at First Presbyterian Church
• Mid-morning – Prayer stops along the route (locations TBD)
• Late morning – Join the citywide National Day of Prayer gathering
• 12:00 PM – Official observance and city proclamation
Water bottle, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, hat, and a heart ready to pray.
Whether you walk the full route or join at the final gathering, this is a powerful opportunity to stand alongside fellow believers and seek God’s presence over our city, our nation, and the generations to come.
On February 28, a team of First Presbyterian Church Covenant Partners and friends traveled to Burnet County to serve alongside The Ark of Highland Lakes, continuing long-term recovery efforts after the devastating July 4 floods.
For some in our church family, this work is not distant—it is deeply personal.
“What began as a quiet holiday turned devastating…”
David Youngquist, who helped organize the trip, experienced the flood firsthand at his family’s ranch near Burnet County.
“The night of July 4 into July 5, over 21 inches of rain fell. What began as a quiet holiday turned devastating. Dams and fences washed out. A man’s car was swept away at a low water crossing just 300 yards from our house. We witnessed a helicopter airlifting residents to safety across the road.”

The flooding brought both widespread destruction and heartbreaking loss across the Hill Country. In Burnet County alone, more than 80 homes were rendered uninhabitable, and months later, many families are still displaced and rebuilding.
For David, the devastation wasn’t just something he saw—it became a call to act.
Through connections with local recovery leaders, including The Ark of Highland Lakes, an opportunity emerged for FPC to serve in a tangible way.
The project: a 1,400-square-foot home that had taken on nearly four feet of floodwater.
The story behind it: a house built years ago by the homeowner and his father—now sitting unlivable after months of insurance challenges.
On that Saturday, our team stepped into the hard, necessary first stage of rebuilding.
Volunteers removed damaged sheetrock, pulled trim, and prepared the home for remediation. The work was physical and often messy—but it was also deeply meaningful.
No special skills were required—just willing hands and hearts ready to serve.

Even months later, the effects of the flood remain— not just structurally, but emotionally and spiritually.
Local partners have shared that many survivors are still navigating loss, uncertainty, and fatigue from the long recovery process. And so the work became more than demolition.
It became presence.
Conversations were shared. Stories were heard. And in the midst of dust and debris, something sacred took shape—neighbors serving neighbors, bearing witness to one another’s burdens.
In the days leading up to the trip, our church prayed:
That the group would be the hands and feet of Jesus… that the work would be completed… and that the homeowner would experience care and hope.
Those prayers were answered—not only in the progress made on the house, but in the spirit of compassion and unity that marked the weekend.

The headlines have moved on—but the need has not. Dozens of families in Burnet County are still rebuilding. Opportunities to serve remain, and partnerships are continuing to grow as churches, ministries, and volunteers come alongside those affected.
As a church, this is an invitation.
Not just to respond in moments of crisis—but to remain present in the long, faithful work of restoration.
Because discipleship doesn’t only happen in the pews.
It happens along the way—through muddy boots, open hands, and hearts willing to serve.

In the spring of 2008, the Session of First Presbyterian Church unanimously voted to begin a Stephen Ministry. Soon thereafter in July, twelve members of FPCSA traveled to Garland, TX and stayed for a week at a hotel where they were trained as Stephen Leaders. It was the second time I went through Stephen Leader training in thirty-five years of pastoral ministry and I wasn’t sorry I made the decision.
When the new Stephen Leader team returned to FPCSA, we got to work immediately and called our first Stephen Ministry training class of fourteen members. Since 2008, FPCSA’s Stephen Ministry has trained over one hundred members and served over two hundred members in need (care receivers) and it’s been a tremendous joy witnessing Covenant Partners of our church family participate in this wonderful ministry.
What is Stephen Ministry? The Apostle Paul wrote in Galatians 6:2, “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Stephen Ministry is a proven and effective way to organize, equip, and supervise a team of congregation members – called Stephen Ministers - to provide high-quality, one-to-one, Christ-centered care to people in the congregation and community experiencing life difficulties.
What exactly is a Stephen Minister? Stephen Ministers are trained lay caregivers who provide emotional and spiritual support to people going through difficult times in life, providing hope and healing in the midst of their pain.
Stephen Ministers are called the after people. Stephen Ministers are there:
…after the phone call in the middle of the night that changes life forever.
…after the babv comes home, demanding more of her than she ever imagined possible.
…after the funeral, when everyone has left and his emotions held at bay come crashing in…
…after the email announcing a new round of layoffs suddenly appears in her inbox.
…after the youngest child pulls out of the hug and heads into the dorm – followed by a long drive back to an empty house.
…after the retirement community director says, “Welcome to your new home.”
…after the divorce papers are served and she wonders if she’ll ever trust anyone again.
…after the gavel goes down, the handcuffs go on, and his loved one is led away.
…after the fire, when rebuilding a home feels impossible.
…after family and friends have heard his story one too many times, but he still needs to talk it out.
(Stephen Ministries, St. Louis)

The name Stephen Ministry comes from Stephen, one of the first laypeople commissioned by the Apostles to provide caring ministry to those in need (Acts 6:1-7)
Stephen Ministry began in 1975 when the Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, Ph.D., a pastor and clinical psychologist, trained nine members of the St. Louis church to assist him in providing Christian care and support to people, both in the congregation and the community, who were experiencing life difficulties. These first Stephen Ministers were so excited by the ministry that they encouraged Dr. Haugk to offer Stephen Ministry to more congregations.

Today more than 14,000 congregations are enrolled in Stephen Ministry including First Presbyterian Church of San Antonio. They represent 197 different Christian denominations and come from all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces, and 30 other countries. More than 80,000 pastors, church staff, and laypeople have been trained as Stephen Leaders to direct their congregation’s Stephen Ministry. These Stephen Leaders have trained over 600,000 congregation members to be Stephen Ministers. Those Stephen Ministers have provided distinctively Christian care to more than 1.5 million people in one-to-one Stephen Ministry caring relationships, and have used their caregiving skills to touch the lives of millions more.
In the coming months, members of your Stephen Leader team (including yours truly) will share so much more about Stephen Ministry, including stories about Stephen Ministers and care receivers from First Presbyterian Church who will share how Stephen Ministry has blessed their lives.
In the meantime, keep Stephen Ministry in your prayers and look forward to learning more and how our Lord Jesus Christ is calling you to participate in this wonderful lay caring ministry.

Above all, love each other deeply because love covers a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. 1 Peter 4:8
It is hard to talk about this last month without mentioning Pat Johnson - a stalwart member of Women of the Church whose glittering eyes and magnetic love for Jesus brought many people into the warmth of WOC studies, service and activities. She was a past President of Women of the Church and recently served as chairman of its Nominating Committee. She loved children and their families and was integral to Advent Festivals and VBS. Pat rarely said no to any service request, and it was rare that anyone ever said no to her. Her sudden death gobsmacked us. We needed each other to get through our sorrow and surprise. Her own Circle 7 canceled their planned trip to Haven for Hope to gather for prayer, and Circle 6 carved out a time in their agenda to just tell Pat stories. The Circle of Concern hosted her memorial reception with Circle 7 members providing a bounty of cookies and fruit trays. So … we learn once more that our grief burden lightens and our prayer life deepens when shared, shoulder to shoulder, by our sisters in Christ.
Our affection for the staff also runs deep. On February 25th Women of the Church had a great time hosting a Taco Bar Lunch in Westminster Hall catered by Cabo Bob for the Staff. KRL staff were included, as they had been in the Fall, which made it extra special. The committee of Sarah Rice, Caroline Clanton and Nancy Puckett along with many other volunteers prettied up the room, baked cookies and a famous cake and delighted in the company of our wonderful hard-working staff.
The Women of the Church Spring Luncheon will feature Bryan and Timberly Eckelmann. Their topic is Imperfect Invitations - Offering Hospitality as Ministry. Bryan and Timberly served our church years ago and are loved for their wisdom, warmth and humor. Their hospitality has modeled Christ for their churches and communities in Ohio, Massachusetts, Texas, Oklahoma and California. Bryan recently retired from his post as Lead Pastor/Head of Staff at Trinity United Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana, California. They are a wonderful couple - come learn and laugh with them. Men are welcome.

And on April 7th the Women of the Church will gather at Joy Fuhrmann’s home for a casual Women’s Night Out. Bring an appetizer or a beverage and enjoy this fun, multigenerational gathering. Grab a friend and come! Women’s Night Out is a great place to bring someone who doesn’t yet have a church home. There is no agenda, just lively conversations shared in warm community.
Besides getting together for prayer and fellowship, the Study Circles are still studying the humbling book of James and sharing stories from our own lives that

help us understand and apply what God is teaching us. “I started to feel like I was part of the church community once I joined this Circle,” said a member of Circle 3.
Circle Up - and love each other deeply.
In Christ, Lellen Lane President, Women of the Church lellenlane@gmail.com

5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay.

Dear Family in Christ,
Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
First Cup is designed to assist you in the habit of daily Bible reading and prayer. The name is to remind you that as you reach for your first cup of morning coffee or tea, reach also for your Bible and prayer list. The prayers at the beginning of each week are taken from hymns, sometimes found in obscure hymnals in my library. They are intended to be read as your beginning prayer, to focus your mind on the daily readings that follow. May this spiritual discipline strengthen you as you face each day.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
