Get Close to the Fire
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.—John 15:4
A couple of weeks ago at our denominational national gathering, I heard an outstanding preacher named Derwin Gray. Derwin grew up here in San Antonio and played football for Judson high school before getting a scholarship to BYU and then going on to the NFL to play for the Indianapolis Colts and the Carolina Panthers.
He talked about his life growing up, about how he used football as a crutch, giving him structure and security and path forward and upward when it seemed like nothing else gave him stability. He lived for football and football became his identity. But then he started living in fear because he realized that he was only as valuable as his performance in the last game. His worth was completely conditional because when you play pro football, you realize that if you don’t play better than everybody else, NFL starts to mean “not for long.”
Then through his wife, he met the Lord and discovered that Jesus valued him more than his performance. It wasn’t about what he had to do, it was about what Jesus did for him.
Looking back, he remembered, that when it got cold, his mother would build a fire in the fireplace. He joked
REV. DR. BOB FULLER
that even though our San Antonio winters were short, they were long and cold enough to learn that if you want to stay warm, you have to GO IN THE HOUSE and GET CLOSE TO THE FIRE.
And when football finally left him out in the cold, because he could no longer play the way he used to, he realized that football was not the fire that would keep him warm. The Holy Spirit is the fire that keeps us warm and gives us light when things get cold and dark. And so he said to all of us, pastors and church leaders,
When things get cold and dark, GET CLOSER TO THE FIRE.
Derwin used that story to illustrate what it means when Jesus talks about ABIDING IN HIM. It’s about staying close to the fire.
Derwin’s identity was all wrapped up in football. But football is not the fire. Work is not the fire. Success is not the fire. The Lord is the fire.
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
John 15:4
As we enter the season of Lent, Jesus’ invitation in John 15:4 calls us to a deeper connection with Him. Lent is a season of reflection, repentance, and renewal, a time to step away from distractions and draw closer to the One who is the true source of life.
To “abide in Christ” means more than simply believing in Him—it means living in constant dependence on Him. Just as a branch cannot survive apart from the vine, we cannot grow spiritually apart from Jesus. This Lenten season, we are invited to abide intentionally by:
• LIVING IN GOD’S WORD – Letting Scripture shape our hearts and renew our minds-immersing yourself in it until it is in you.
• INVOLVING HIM IN OUR LIVES IN PRAYER – Not just speaking to God, but listening for His voice and having the patience and maturity to dwell in His promises and wait for His answer and direction.
• LIVING WITH AND LOVING HIS PEOPLE— worshiping, praying, and preparing our hearts for the joy of Easter together.
Letting go of the things that hinder us from experiencing His presence.
Lent is often marked by fasting, prayer, and acts of service, but these practices are not ends in themselves. They are ways to abide in Christ, stripping away the excess so that we may be rooted more deeply in His love and grace. As we walk toward the cross, let us remember that true transformation comes not from what we give up, but from who we cling to—Jesus Himself.
Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, March 5. We will hold our Ash Wednesday service at 6:30 in the Sanctuary. We also encourage you to join the Lenten Study—"Emotionally Healthy Spirituality" led by our prayer ministry committee. As a church family, we want to abide together—so that we all experience the fullness of Christ’s presence and bear the fruit of His Spirit in our lives. This Lent, let’s help one another STAY CLOSE TO THE FIRE.

Deacons Article
United in Prayer
Dear friends in faith,
As we embrace the month of March 2025, I am delighted to share a heartfelt opportunity our Board of Deacons has embarked upon. We are taking a spiritual journey together through the cherished words of John Baillie's "A Diary of Private Prayer." This treasured book offers 31 days of morning and evening prayers, each designed to deepen our connection with God through reflection and supplication.
By reading and praying over the same passages each day, we hope to amplify our collective prayers and support each other in our roles as humble servants of God. We warmly invite you to join us on this spiritual endeavor. Simply locate the day of the month in your copy of the book that aligns
with your start date. Each day contains a blank page where you can jot down your thoughts and reflections.
In unison with your faithful companions in Christ, let us aim to "pray without ceasing" and nurture our spiritual lives together.

Friday Singers Outreach
Twenty years ago our Minister of Music began to search for members who love to sing, not necessarily professionally trained musicians, but for members who just love to sing.
Those members who gathered were reminded that many people were in housing situations that prohibited their coming to regular church services. The Friday Singers were formed; singing for an hour or two on Friday mornings at various retirement communities, rehab centers and nursing homes.
This winter and upcoming spring finds this group active and visiting these facilities on Friday mornings. Activity with this group is welcomed and we are always needing new members, especially right now, we seek a few men. No training is needed, just have a desire to sing with others, and for those in need. We welcome your call to the church music office, 210226-0215 or Charlotte Hains Gates, 210-710-7173 and we’re ready to sing with you!

New Baby Brunch
Celebrating New Life and Community
The birth of a child is a profound joy shared by new parents, their families, and our church community. On Sunday, February 16, the Children's Ministry Committee hosted a heartwarming New Baby Brunch to celebrate this wonderful blessing. This year, our FPC family welcomed twenty-one new babies!
The brunch provided a delightful opportunity for parents to connect, share stories, and enjoy a few laughs while savoring light snacks. It was a wonderful way for families to bond and build lasting friendships within our community.
We extend our deepest gratitude to the Children's Ministry Committee members for organizing such a memorable event. A special thanks to our FPC Children’s Center Director, Laura Ortiz, and Rev. Bob Fuller for their presence and warm welcome to our newest members and their families. Additional appreciation is owed to our gracious hosts, Meredith Park and Susan DeKoch, for their unwavering support and dedication to our church families.
Journey Through Lent
40 Days of Prayer Guided by the Strategic Plan
by Pam Ray, Strategic Plan Director
Embark on a transformative 40-day prayer journey this Lent that aligns with our strategic vision—discover more about your role in God's plan and deepen your faith.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5th. I invite you to join us in 40 days of prayer focused on our strategic plan. Each day, we will release a prayer and a related scripture on our social media channels that aligns with a focus area of the strategic plan. Engaging together in this prayer effort will not only honor God but also provide deeper personal insight into our strategic goals.
You might be wondering: "How can I learn more about the plan and how does it impact me?"
Learn more by visiting our Next 10 blog at fpcsanantonio.org/blog/next10
Your participation in this 40-day journey will not only deepen your personal spiritual life but also fortify our church's shared mission. Together, let's unite in prayer, trusting in God's guidance as we move forward in faith and action.
During this Lenten season, we invite our members and guests to take time to pray for our congregation and community using the stations of the cross. Depictions of scenes derived from the Gospel accounts are located throughout the 2nd floor of the FPC Campus. Maps are available in Mauzé Lobby. Prayer Guides are posted at each station and can also be accessed by scanning each station's QR code.
This is a perfect, simple family or small group activity which can be done at any time the church building is open. If you cannot attend in person, an online copy of the prayer guide book is available at bit./fpcsa-lent. Printed versions of the book may be requested by those visiting church members who cannot attend or do not have adequate internet access by emailing communications@fpcsat.org.

Flowers at First
We look forward to Easter at First Presbyterian Church when the Sanctuary will be filled with Easter lilies. This form is for everyone to use as they remember loved ones with an Easter lily for the Sanctuary. Any additional revenue received from the donations for Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies over the years have enabled the Sanctuary Flower Committee to make special gifts to the church. Special gifts to the church include the antique candlesticks on the altar, the cross in the Griffith Chapel, the portrait of Louis Zbinden in the Zbinden Lecture Hall, antique chests in the Mauzé Lobby, rugs in the McCullough Room and Narthex, chandeliers in the Geneva Room, new stoles for the ministers, new Bibles for worship and many other gifts.
If you are considering giving flowers for the Sunday traditional services, the names of the flower committee are listed below. You may call them for information for the month you desire. Telephone numbers are in the church directory. It is never too early to reserve the Sunday you prefer, so please call as soon as possible. The listings must be available to the church staff one month prior to the committee member’s designated month. We are extremely grateful for the many members who have given flowers to enhance our beautiful church. Thank you.

President's Letter Mar. 2025
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1
March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. Many of you are familiar with that phrase which can be traced back to Thomas Fuller’s 1732 book of proverbs and witty sayings. It is etched in my mind from a thirdgrade art project where we stapled two paper plates together to make a concave canvas to decorate on one side with crayons and brown yarn and the other with pieces of paper curled with our blunt nose scissors. The lion and the lamb depicted the general weather pattern where early March is blustery and cold and late March is calmer and sunny. Jesus’ parables, explained in Scripture, can serve a similar function. They give us concrete hooks to hang Kingdom concepts on.
The Parable of the Sower gives us an image of a farmer casting his seeds across a patch of soil. We can take the perspective of the soil and ask “Is the condition of my heart more like rocky soil, soil filled with thorns or good soil?” Or we can take the perspective of the sower and ask, “Am I casting seeds? How am I casting seeds? Am I taking the time to cultivate the seeds?”. Bob’s sermon on February 23 turns our attention from being disciples, to becoming disciple makers. To becoming sowers of the Gospel. As the March weather turns warmer, I hope to focus more on casting and cultivating seeds for God’s Kingdom, in the power of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps you will join me?
As a way to support and encourage our pastors and staff, Leah Butler, Martha Smith and Nancy Williams served a delicious lunch with a fiesta theme at the Spring Staff Appreciation Luncheon on February 26. The Mexican food was delicious and the homemade desserts provided by our circle members were amazing. Thank you to that team for showing our love for everyone who works at FPC.
Our new Evening Women’s Circle kicked off with its first official meeting on Tuesday, February 25. More than 20 women shared a meal, studied the Word and began to get to know one another in smaller breakout groups. For the remainder of this Spring, we will be meeting at Wendy Garcia’s home. If you are interested in more details, please contact Wendy at wendydmgarcia@gmail.com. Please note she has a new email address. This circle meets the fourth Tuesday of the month. There are also many other circles. Please go to the church website under Adult Ministries/Women to find information about meeting times and places.
The Spring Luncheon: Getting into the Water will be on Monday, March 31, and will feature Sarah and Scott Lambie as our speakers. They are the co-founders of Rescue One More, an organization that works to assist children in Uganda who have experienced sexual abuse. The Lambies will be sharing how they were called to be disciples and the impact one woman’s actions had on them and ultimately on hundreds of others. Please look for information on the screens at church, in the bulletins and on postcards in the Mauzé Lobby. Maggie Burnett and her team will take reservations. Anyone wanting to book a seat can either do so online, or at the table that will be in the Mauzé lobby on Sundays. Tickets are $25, and scholarships are available.

Older Adult Ministry
February has been a vibrant and enriching month for KEYS, filled with fantastic events and memorable gatherings. We kicked off the month with an inspiring musical performance by Blake and Jenna Bolerjack on February 7. Their talent and heartfelt music beautifully represented the spirit of Jesus, leaving a lasting impression on everyone present.
Valentine's Day brought a touch of nostalgia as we welcomed Michael McMullen, who wowed us with his uncanny portrayal of Elvis. It truly felt as though "The King" himself was in the building, making for an entertaining and unforgettable day.
On February 21, we celebrated February birthdays in grand style with a special outing. Thirty-four of our members made their way to the historic Menger Hotel, where we enjoyed a delightful celebration in a truly stunning setting. To close out the month, we are excited to welcome Joel Pope from the San Antonio Citizen’s Police Academy. His visit promises to be both informative and engaging, adding another layer of community connection to our rich tapestry of events.
We are grateful for these wonderful experiences and look forward to more exciting events in the months ahead. Thank you to everyone who participated and made these gatherings special. Stay tuned for more updates and events as we continue to grow and celebrate together.
Rev. Dr. Joe Moore Assistant Pastor for Older Adults and Congregational Care

MARCH 2025
Blessings and love in Christ, Sandy Sturch
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.— Psalm 143:8
1 Lam. 1; Isaiah 1; 2 Chron. 7:13-14
Great is Thy faithfulness, O God, my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee. Thou changest not; Thy compassions they fail not; As thou has been Thou forever will be. Summer and winter, springtime and harvest, sun, moon and stars in their courses above, Join with all nature in manifold witness to Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow - Blessings all mine and ten thousand beside! (Worship in Song, # 86)
Jesus is coming to earth again, What if it were today? Coming in power and love to reign, What if it were today? Coming to claim His chosen bride, all the redeemed and purified, over this whole earth scattered wide. What if it were today? Faithful and true would He find us here, if He should come today? Watching in gladness, not in fear, If He should come today? Signs of His coming multiply; Morning light breaks in eastern skies. Watch for the time is drawing nigh. What if it were today? (Worship in Song, # 189)
Faith of our fathers! Living still in spite of dungeon, fire and sword, O how our hearts beat high with joy when-e’er we hear that glorious word: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death. Faith of our fathers! We will love both friend and foe in all our strife, and preach Thee, too, as love knows how by kindly words and virtuous life: Faith of our fathers, holy faith! We will be true to thee till death. ( The Hymnbook, # 348)
Oh soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? Here’s light for a look at the Savior, and life more abundant and free! Thro’ death into life everlasting He passed and we follow Him there. Over us sin no more hath dominion. For more than conquerors are we. His word will not fail you—He promised; believe Him and all will be well. Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell. Turn your eyes upon Jesus; Look full in His wonderful face; And the things of earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace. (Worship in Song, # 207)
The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can tell. It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell. The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His son to win; His erring child He reconciled and pardoned from his sin. Could we with ink the ocean fill and were the skies of parchment made; were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade; to write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry; nor could the scroll contain the whole if stretched from sky to sky. (Frederick M. Lehman, 1917)
30 John 1:35-51; Matt. 4:18-22; Luke 9:23-27; Luke 14:25-35

FIRST CUP PRAYER LIST
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. (Romans 8:26).

GOD’S ANSWER
Come with us on mission in the Czech Republic! Our team will be joining Josiah Ventures in an English camp ministry that combines Fusion (music) and Edge (sports).
The draw for Czech youth is the opportunity to practice their English with you, and through the camp, you will have the chance to build relationships and share the love of Jesus.
You will be fully immersed in camp life, participating in activities alongside Czech students and staying in the same resort-style lodging with them.
Our role is to build friendships, demonstrate Christ’s love, and connect students to the Czech team for ongoing discipleship

Where in Czech Republic?
Frýdlant nad Ostravicí, Czechia

Czechia is among the world’s safest countries and has an excellent transportation system for easy travel.
How much does this cost? We are asking each participant to raise $2,700 (this covers the international flight, lodging, and all other trip expenses)
Do I need to know how to speak Czech? No! This is an English camp and the students are there to practice English with you.
