Building a Championship Team:

Welcoming Three New Pastors to FPC

Hallelujah!

One of the great joys of ministry is watching God answer the prayers of His people. For many months, you have faithfully prayed for the health of our church and asked the Lord to raise up the men and women He desires to lead our congregation.

We are grateful to share that those prayers have been answered.

This fall, we are thrilled to welcome three outstanding pastors to our ministry team. Roger Patton, Andrew Johnson, and Cara Taylor will each bring unique gifts, deep ministry experience, and a shared passion for helping us fulfill our mission of making disciples who love Christ, love one another, and love the city.

The exciting part is that they are all joining us at the same time, becoming part of the outstanding staff God has already assembled here at FPC. As these searches unfolded, I found myself watching the San Antonio Spurs make another exciting playoff run while the FIFA World Cup captured the world's attention. Both reminded me of an important truth: every championship team needs talented players, but talent alone is not enough. What ultimately makes the difference is team culture.

This church has always been

blessed with all-star talent on its staff, but a healthy team needs both talent and culture. The opportunity before us now is to continue building a championship team—not the kind where individuals simply perform their own roles and tally the score at the end, but the kind you see in great basketball and soccer teams.

Championship teams support one another, encourage one another, celebrate one another's successes, and grow stronger together. Most importantly, they share a common purpose.

That is exactly what excites me about these three new pastors.

Each brings a distinct personality, remarkable spiritual gifts, and a wealth of ministry experience. Yet they are united by an evident love for Jesus Christ, His Church, and the mission of making disciples.

Meet Our New Pastors

Roger Patton will serve as Associate Pastor for Outreach.

Roger comes to us from First Presbyterian Church of Templeton, California, where he has faithfully served as pastor. With more than 25 years of ministry experience and a recently completed Doctor of Ministry degree from Talbot School of Theology, Roger brings both seasoned leadership and a heart for mission. At FPC, Roger will provide pastoral leadership for local and global missions, church planting, and evangelism. He will also serve as

our primary preacher in the Modern Worship Service. Roger and his wife, Keris, are making the move to San Antonio together. They have one son, age 26, and a daughter in nursing school.

Andrew Johnson will join us as Associate Pastor for Adult Formation and Theological Studies.

Andrew comes from Marine View Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, Washington, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh.

Andrew will oversee adult Christian education and spiritual formation, our young adult communities and university ministry, and serve as Executive Director of the Zbinden Center for Biblical Leadership.

Andrew, his wife, Christine, and their two elementary-aged daughters are excited to become part of the FPC family.

Cara Taylor will oversee our Children's Ministry, Middle School Ministry, High School Ministry, and Children's Center. A recent graduate of Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, Cara most recently served on the staff of Gig Harbor Presbyterian Church

July/August 2026 in Washington. Cara brings broad ministry experience, having served both in the local church and at the denominational level, particularly in world missions. Many in our congregation already know and love Cara because she is a former covenant partner at FPC, and her husband, Judson, previously served on our staff. They have two college-aged children, making this a joyful homecoming for their family.

Transitions like these are exciting, but they also involve sacrifice. Roger and Keris, Andrew and Christine, and Cara and Judson are all leaving behind friends, familiar communities, and extended family to begin a new chapter in San Antonio.

I encourage you to pray for each of these families as they make this significant move. Let us do everything we can to help them feel loved, supported, and welcomed into our church family from the very beginning.

Andrew will be in San Antonio in August, while Roger and Cara will begin in September. All three will be with us for Kickoff Sunday on August 23, and we look forward to introducing them to the entire congregation.

Of course, we also want to thank all of our staff for carrying us through this transition time. We have a solid foundation, and it is a joy to serve with these brothers and sisters. I especially want to thank Rev. Dr. John Kaiser and Rev. Dr. Paul Kacsur. They stepped in at a difficult time and have loved us well. Although their roles and service will change, we look forward to a future where John and Paul will continue to be active and valued members of our church family and ministry team.

Thank you for praying faithfully throughout this process. Now, together, let us receive these new leaders as God's gracious gift to our church and continue pursuing our mission with renewed energy and hope—to make disciples who love Christ, love one another, and love our city.

Rooted in God

Our Rainforest VBS Adventure What a wonderful time we had at Vacation Bible School as we traveled through the Amazon Rainforest! Along the way, the children discovered the true nature of God and learned what it means to be deeply rooted in a relationship with Him. We met some wonderful rainforest friends and learned about how and where they live in the Amazon. Each friend also helped us explore an important truth from Scripture: •

Tango the Quetzal taught us that God is our Creator as we explored Genesis 1.

Seymour the Glass Frog showed us that God knows everything through Psalm 139.

•

Dottie the Ocelot reminded us that God is our safe place as we learned from David's example in 1 Samuel 23–24.

The Amazon adventure is not over yet! At Kickoff Sunday on August 23, Howie the Howler Monkey will help us discover that God is forever as we explore Revelation 7 and 21–22.

Thank you to the many volunteers who made VBS possible. Your dedication and devotion were a beautiful expression of God's love for the children of our church and community.

An Invocation for America at 250

By Deacon and Former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Sichan Siv Heavenly Father, We humbly beseech You to look down upon us as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence.

We are grateful for George Washington, who fought an impossible war against the world's most powerful military and won our independence.

We remember the sacrifices of our patriots, starting with Dr. Joseph Warren, Grand Master of Massachusetts and the first general killed at Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. We thank You for saving the life of James Monroe, wounded at Trenton on December 26, 1776, and for the patriotism of all our soldiers and their leaders, including Generals Nathanael Greene, Henry Knox, Israel Putnam, and Benjamin Lincoln, who accepted the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.

We remember the women who supported their husbands and the Revolutionary War, especially Martha Washington and Abigail Adams. They also served as cooks, nurses, and spies, like Anna Smith Strong and Agent 355, and Deborah Sampson, who disguised herself as a man to fight for our cause.

We thank You for Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman, who drafted the Declaration of Independence.

Please strengthen the hearts of Your servants as we continue to serve You by serving our communities, societies, and humanity. Grant us patience in suffering, courage in adversity, and perseverance in hardship. Preserve us from want, sickness, and despair, and unite us in purpose and resolve.

Guide our counsels and prosper our just endeavors so that peace and freedom are always secured to our lands.

May we ever remember that the success of our cause depends not on our own strength, but upon Your favor and providence.
