Mark 14:32–36 (ESV): 32 And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. 34 And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” 35 And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”
If you ever get a chance to visit Israel, make sure that you spend some time in Jerusalem, and particularly at the Garden of Gethsemane. The garden is at the foot of the Mount of Olives, just across a valley from the walls of old Jerusalem.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, you get a good view of the “Golden” gate of the Temple Mount. It would have been from that gate that the temple guards, sent by the Sanhedrin (the Jewish high Council), left the city to go find and arrest Jesus.
From his place in the garden, directly across the valley and opposite that gate, Jesus could have watched the company of soldiers as they came. He could have seen them carrying torches, winding down the slope through the shacks and streets, making progress until eventually they reached him and his friends in the garden.
REV. DR. BOB FULLER
As I looked across the valley, I pondered what it might have been like for Jesus on that dark night, with the gigantic temple looming high above the valley and his destiny closing in. I imagined that as he watched the torches, the Son of God could have accurately tracked the movement of the soldiers from the moment they emerged from the temple gate, and calculated their progress until they reached him in Gethsemane: 30 minutes; 20 minutes; 10 minutes; five minutes, they are here.
Jesus prayed, “Father, if it be your will, take this cup from me; but, not my will, but your will be done.” And Jesus, even though he knew what was coming, Jesus did not run. He knew the Father’s plan and stayed so that he could fulfill his mission and save our lives for all eternity. It was the toughest thing that he ever had to do. But he did it.
Several years ago, my father (Bobby Fuller) shared with me a devotional he had written about Jesus’ last moments in the garden of Gethsemane.
“What is the hardest thing you ever had to do? In the moment, EVERY difficult matter we have faced or complicated decision we've had to make may have been - or seemed to be - "the" hardest ever.
When Jesus neared Jerusalem and foreknew the deep meaning of all that was coming, we are told, He wept over the city (Luke 19:41). It was not weeping and wailing with dramatic gnashing of teeth in pangs of hysteria. He simply wept.
But His anguish was not selfabsorbed, it was for and about his brothers and sisters - "us". Jesus wept for us. Every one of us. Each one of us, in particular. How powerful is that reality?
We might imagine that as Jesus approached Jerusalem his weeping was acknowledgment that His kingdom mission was coming to its purposed conclusion. Incarnate Jesus loved the disciples, the friends and the created world with every fiber of his humanity. All of it was as real to him as it is to any one of us, including the sadness and pain of grief. He was experiencing the human grief of impending death to this life. Jesus was not just “playing” the role of a human person, he was living a human life and acknowledging the reality of its sure and certain ending. He was not spared death.
But, while his tears were real, they were not tears of defeat, and his prayer was not one of despair. Because through his death he would conquer

Deacons Washington in Wallingford 250
“I
was summoned by my country whose voice I can never hear but with veneration and love.”- Washington (Photo by James Ridley)
Our Founding Father George Washington, whose birthday we celebrate on February 22, visited Wallingford, Connecticut in 1775. The City, founded in 1670, is planning a major 250th Anniversary celebration this summer, with a re-enactment on Flag Day, Saturday, June 14, 2025 on Main Street. It is preceded by Ambassador Sichan Siv’s keynote address on Wednesday, June 11, at 7:00 PM at the Wallingford Public Library, 200 North Main Street, Wallingford, CT 06492 (Tel 203-265-6754).
Ambassador Siv arrived in Wallingford, 200 years after Washington, with two dollars to pick apples there and drive a taxi in New York. In 1989, he went to work at The White House as Deputy Assistant to President George HW Bush, 13 years after his escape from Cambodia’s killing fields. In 2001, he was appointed Ambassador to the UN by President George W Bush after unanimous confirmation by the US Senate, serving until 2006. In 2005, he represented the United States at the 60th Anniversary of the UN in the footsteps of Presidents Truman in 1945, Eisenhower in 1955, Johnson in 1965, and Clinton in 1995. In 2008, he authored the American Dream Story “GOLDEN BONES” (international bestselling memoir) and 2014 the political thriller “GOLDEN STATE” predicting what is currently happening in the world.
Blessed I am as you are beside me
Whether or not each other we can see
I only need your spirituality in serving God and Country
I give thanks in my prayers for thee.
– The Deacon
The
moment I heard of America, I loved her; the moment I can serve her, anytime or in any part of
the world, will be the happiest of my life.
– The Marquis
Dayton, OH from Brainard, CT (KHFD) in March 2024. He was the keynote speaker at CAP 2024 National Conference and received a Commemorative Coin from CAP Commanding General.
This year 2025 on February 18, Ambassador Siv was conferred the Jack Jones Humanitarian Award at the North America Grand Masters Conference in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. On March 2 (Texas Independence Day), he addressed the Grand Lodge of New York and received the Grand Master’s Award of Appreciation. On April 26, he publishes a Tribute to Theodore Roosevelt in honor of the annual pilgrimage to TR's gravesite in Oyster Bay Cove, New York.
In preparation for his historic presentation on our First President, Ambassador Siv has visited Mount Vernon numerous times. He has traveled to Nevis where Alexander Hamilton was born, Barbados where Washington visited with his brother Lawrence in 1751, and The Grand Turk where the Continental Army got its supplies of salt during the Revolutionary War. He visited Chavaniac where Lafayette was born and Picpus, the Marquis’s resting place. He also read the Washington Diaries in the Library of Congress.
We hope you can join us at this once in a lifetime celebration.
Sichan Siv is also a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church San Antonio (founded in 1846), a member of its Global Missions Committee, and a regular contributor to First Press Magazine.

Thursday, April 17 | 6:30 PM | Sanctuary
Join us for our Maundy Thursday Communion Service. Maundy Thursday commemorates the Last Supper Jesus shared with his disciples before his crucifixion. It's a time to remember when Jesus washed his disciples' feet as a sign of humility and service. The term "Maundy" comes from the Latin word for "command," highlighting Jesus' instruction to love one another as He loves us. Reflect on these powerful moments, celebrate communion, and deepen your understanding of our faith. All are welcome!
Friday, April 18 | 12:00 PM | Sanctuary
Join us for our Good Friday Service. This solemn gathering is a time to remember and reflect on the crucifixion and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Good Friday marks the day Jesus willingly gave His life for us, demonstrating the depth of His love and paving the way for redemption. Let’s come together to honor this profound moment in our faith. All are welcome to join in remembrance and reflection.
Intergenerational Discipleship in the College Ministry
2 Timothy 2:2 "And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also."
The world is bound to scoff at the Church; our job is to determine the “why” behind their scoffing. Do they scoff because the Church is a useless shell? Or do they scoff because we seek Jesus and obey His word daily? Do they scoff because we refuse to “walk” what we “talk”? Or because we “foolishly” give with sacrificial generosity?
Each generation of believers has a choice to make concerning whether or not they actually want to pursue the wonderful, joyous, and costly freedom of taking up their cross and following Jesus. For the Church to flourish, to bring glory to God, and to transform individuals as well as society, individual believers must give the Lord their “yes” by resolving to dunk their heads in the refreshing streams of transformational grace that have been laid out for us, including, but not limited to, Scripture, sacrament, prayer, fasting, etc.
Given this, do individuals need to step up? Absolutely. Must they step up alone, however? Absolutely not. Christianity is a community-based faith—which follows quite logically from our belief about the Triune Godhead. God Himself has been in community for eons, eternity even! Since we’re made in His image, of course, He’d want to bless us with togetherness! Therefore, we are strongest when in communion with one another.
From the earliest days of the Church, even, this concept harmoniously played out in the PaulBarnabas-Timothy model, which became paradigmatic of one of the chief normative means the Holy Spirit has worked through for the last 2,000 years, carrying the Church from generation to generation, leading us to where we are now. Paul and Barnabas labored side by side, and Paul and Timothy enjoyed a mentor/ mentee relationship, respectively. In 2 Timothy 2:2, readers can observe the glorious fruit resulting from an “old man in the faith,” Paul, investing in a younger, less mature believer, Timothy. After a decade of tutelage under Paul, Timothy found himself responsible for the entire Church in the city of Ephesus and was even ready to raise up and appoint pastors and leaders to oversee smaller groups and congregations within the city.
In the same way, even to this day, all believers need people running the race alongside them, friends who encourage and challenge them in Christ, as well as mentors in the faith who can pour love,
Jordan Arce and Gabe Irvine volunteering with the YeeHaw for Jesus children's event.
affection, and wisdom into them via life-on-life living. Likewise, mature believers have the wonderful duty and privilege of stepping into these sorts of “pouringout” relationships that will raise up the next generation of disciples who are learning to observe all that Christ has commanded.
Praise God, for the relational reality that Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy walked in is being celebrated even today through the University Ministry at FPC, especially at Trinity University, and ought to be highlighted in order to bring glory to God, provide cause for celebration, and to galvanize FPC further into our Next 10 goal of becoming a church rich in life-on-life discipleship.
In addition to our Tuesday night large groups, Sunday night co-ed family dinners, and Friday afternoon gendersplit Bible studies, the wind of the Holy Spirit is moving and mobilizing throughout the week, transforming hearts and lives through relationship! Lions of the faith from all over the age spectrum, such as Preston and Stephanie Hill, Chuck and Anne Bunn, Marianne Ryan, Kelsey Knowles, Kara Weaver, and Mary Henderson (to name some!), are moving towards university students with intentionality, listening to them, bearing burdens with them, and instilling wisdom in them!
Within their age group, the university-aged believers are banding together, refreshing each other with fellowship, and challenging one another with accountability! Several of them have even taken the initiative to create outreach Bible studies for their specific spheres of influence (sports teams, social clubs, etc.), boldly hoisting the banner of Christ high over Trinity University!
Looking downstream, several of our University Ministry students have even stepped up to the plate to raise up the next generation, volunteering with the FPC Children’s Ministry, and partnering with our local mission partner, Young Life, to disciple and mentor middle and high schoolers!
In conclusion, the Next 10 plan is in motion! Please partner with me and the university ministry by lifting us up in prayer daily! Additionally, please prayerfully consider how you might find and/or deepen your niche in the massive relational spider web that is the Church, for the sake of your joy, the next generation, the strength of our corporate witness to the unbelieving world, and, ultimately, to the glory of God. Thank you for reading!

The Lenten season is drawing to a close and we are quickly approaching Holy Week and Easter. Soon joyous alleluias will be lifted up in this church, throughout the city and across the world in awe and gratitude of Jesus’ amazing sacrifice and God’s unfathomable grace and mercy. Given my tendency to jump right to the empty tomb and Jesus’ magnificent victory over death, this year I have been contemplating Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane the night he was betrayed and taken into custody. As I read Luke 22:42-44, I noticed a sentence I had skimmed over many times – between “thy will be done” and Jesus’ agony. It reads: “And
there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him.” When Jesus submitted to God’s will, God didn’t take away his agony, but He did strengthen Jesus to endure it. Whatever hard thing God is asking you or me to do (God doesn’t seem to ask us to do easy things very often, does He?), I pray that we can feel the Holy Spirit strengthening us.

Older Adult Ministry
March was an exhilarating month for our KEYS family, filled with inspiring stories and joyful gatherings. On March 7, Matt and Helena Smith shared their poignant journey from Ukraine, opening our eyes to injustices in the world and inspiring us with their courage and the ways God provided for their family. The following week, on March 14, we shifted gears to lighthearted fun with our Fun and Games event, where laughter echoed as participants took on a variety of delightful challenges, including the surprising difficulty and enjoyment of bouncing a pencil into a cup.
March 21 saw us coming together for a lovely birthday lunch at The Cottage, a charming Irish restaurant on Broadway. Many of us pretended to be Irish for a day, celebrating in such a warm and traditional setting, which was a true delight for everyone. To cap off the month, Tracey Cowden from the UTSA Music Department graced us on March 28 with her presentation, "Music as Therapy," reminding us of the healing power of music and how therapeutic it can be.
As we look ahead to April, we eagerly anticipate another uplifting musical event on April 4 with the talented Miles Pike. On April 11, friends from Comfort Café/Serenity Star will join us, sharing about their recovery program and unique restaurant. April 18, Good Friday, offers a moment of reflection with a service in the Sanctuary at noon (NO KEYS), while April 25 welcomes a grand visit from King Antonio himself as part of our Fiesta celebrations!
Mark your calendars for the Battle of Flowers Parade on May 2 a day of vibrant color and no KEYS events due to the church's closure. Stay tuned for our May outings! Thank you for your participation and spirit.
