Pastor’s Article

The Dad with the Answers REV. DR. BOB FULLER This June, and particularly this Father’s Day, will be very different for me and my family. My father, Bobby Fuller, passed away and went home to be with the Lord on December 18, 2023.

I have been thinking a lot about “Gran-Bobby” lately. In his memorial service I said, “It may be cliché, but my Dad is my hero,” and that is as true today as it has ever been. In the six months of reflection on his life and our relationship, I am starting to understand that word “hero” differently—in a more rich and compelling way.

Although Bobby Fuller was “awesome” in so many ways, he was not perfect (and he would have been the first to remind us). As a father, he, like all of us, often felt a tremendous amount of pressure to have it “all-together.” Fathers often feel pressure to have ready answers for an unpredictable and complex variety of problems and questions: financial questions, relationship questions, legal questions, sports questions, academic questions, mechanical questions, work questions, and spiritual questions.

The expectations of a Father’s expertise are daunting and sometimes it feels like failure to say, “I just don’t know.”

Fathers are supposed to have all the answers (or know how to find them)—right? But in truth, sometimes we are just as confused, confounded, and bewildered as the kids who ask us the questions.

One of the things that I really came to appreciate about my father in the last few years, and particularly in the last 12 months, was that his wisdom was more and more often demonstrated by his humility. It seemed that the older and wiser he got, the more readily willing he was to confess, “I don’t know.” As his health circumstances got more difficult, he had to rely more and more on the knowledge of doctors. He had to trust more and more in the care and capabilities of members of his family. And finally, he demonstrated that in all things, he had to surrender completely to our savior Jesus Christ.

This month, I would like to share with you one of the many devotionals Dad wrote for his own church’s newsletter.

As you know, I like to share these with my First Presbyterian SATX family every now and then, and I found this one particularly meaningful as I thought about him this week.

WHO’S IN CONTROL? “I will lift up my eyes unto the hills, from where my help comes. My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth. – The Lord shall preserve my going out and my coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.”

(Psalm 121:1, 2, 8) One beautiful summer afternoon after spending a delightful “parents’ day” at camp with our son, my wife and I were returning home. While reminiscing about the pleasantries of our visit, I routinely began to pass a large eighteen-wheel tractor trailer rig also traveling South on the interstate highway. As I came abreast of the trailer unit, the truck driver pulled sharply over into my lane to begin passing another automobile traveling ahead of him. It became instantly obvious www.fpcsanantonio.org

that we could not both continue to do what we were doing where we were doing it. He was not giving way.

Confronted with the circumstances and the relative sizes of the vehicles, I pulled as far left as I could to avoid his sideswipe. Ultimately that meant leaving the travel lane and the paved shoulder and taking to the refuge of the grass median of the highway.

In real time that incident was decades ago. But I have often revisited the event in my mind. In retrospect, I

CONTENTS have come to realize that life itself is very much like that experience.

Most of us are accustomed to being in fair control of the situations and the stuff of our lives. We want it that way and by reason of education, experience and preparation, we strive to see to it that we maintain as much control of the direction of our lives as we possibly can.

To all outward appearances, we seem to do a reasonably creditable job of retaining control of most aspects of our lives. But is it really control, or simply the illusion of control? You see, in that highway driving instance, I never really lost control of my vehicle, but the circumstances under which I held that control were tenuous, almost incidental. And so it is with life.

Perhaps it doesn’t matter that we are not as “in control” as we might imagine. I think it is not fatalistic but reassuring to know that in the ultimate life issues we can be confidently dependent upon the loving strength of God rather than our own frailty. It is the epitome of hope that we are empowered by the Holy Spirit to believe in and rely upon the fact that God is for us. It is far less frightening to recognize that our control is fleeting, when we know by faith that in Christ we are linked to God’s control, which is eternal.

Dads don’t have to have all the answers, but we need to know the Father who does.

Description: The Prayer Ministry at FPC is excited to announce the launch of a Moms In Prayer International group. Our initial meetings will be held for one hour on the first Tuesday of June, July, and August (June 4, July 2, & August 6) with weekly sessions beginning in September.

This is a wonderful opportunity to praise God and support one another in prayer. In small groups of 2-3, each member will pray a provided scripture over one child and one specific need of that child, as guided by the Holy Spirit. We will also pray for the First Presbyterian Children’s Center over the summer.

Moms who participate often say it’s their favorite hour of the week! We hope you’ll consider joining us. If you require childcare, please let us know.

Help Continue the Legacy of Care Support Groups at FPC! Do you feel called to help heal broken hearts? Not in a physical sense, but by providing emotional and spiritual support? GriefShare and DivorceCare are programs developed by Church Initiative, a nondenominational, nonprofit ministry serving over 20,000 churches worldwide. Based in Wake Forest, North Carolina, Church Initiative creates and publishes video-based curricula designed to equip churches to minister to those going through life crises such as divorce or the death of a loved one.

For the past five years, we have offered DivorceCare and GriefShare programs and witnessed God doing incredible things through them. We are now seeking volunteers to serve as facilitators for these support groups, using the video and written materials provided by Church Initiative.

If you have a heart for those who are grieving or facing the aftermath of divorce, please connect with Pastor Joe Moore at joem@fpcsat.org to learn more about how you can get involved. Your support could make a significant difference in the lives of those in need.

Pray for the People of Chevak, Alaska After reviewing last year's mission trips, we decided not to return to Alaska. I had questioned every year whether it was good stewardship to spend so much on travel for just one week, with no real follow-up throughout the year. Most mission trips involve working alongside people who are already invested in the mission. This wasn’t the case in Chevak. Aside from my eight years of involvement for one week each summer, there has been no continued mission work throughout the year. Though it was a difficult decision, it was necessary.

Alaska Mission for Christ will continue sending other teams to Chevak. Please pray that God will use these efforts to establish a consistent witness in the village.

Also, pray for Missy, who posts regular devotionals on her Facebook page, and for Kayden, who moved to a new town last summer, found a church, was baptized,

and got married. Pray that families in Chevak have a successful summer and fall gathering, hunting, and fishing season to prepare for the winter.

It is hard not to leave a piece of your heart in the village!

From 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, children aged 4 years through those who have completed 5th grade are invited to embark on a thrilling underwater journey, exploring the wonders of the ocean and deepening their friendship with God. Our theme this year, "Dive into a Scuba Adventure," promises exciting activities, engaging lessons, and loads of fun. The cost is $20 per child, and scholarships are available to ensure everyone can join in on the adventure.

But that’s not all—we’re also calling on teens and adults to help make this year’s VBS a splashing success. If you're in 6th grade or older, we'd love for you to volunteer and help lead our young explorers through activities like Recreation, Crafts, and guiding groups as a Shepherd.

On behalf of the officers working security and traffic at First Presbyterian Church, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you all for your generosity and displays and offers of appreciation this past May 19th. All of the officers expressed their positive thoughts and we were all so touched by everyone at the church. We often see and hear these comments on a regular basis by many of the church membership, and it is very much taken to heart by all of us. Many law enforcement officers here and in the city and county regularly work ‘extra jobs’ to supplement their incomes. But I can tell you that a minuscule amount of these jobs are as much as appreciated to go to regularly as working for the fine and caring parishioners at First Presbyterian Church. We have to constantly be vigilant and alert for any serious or unexpected incident or person(s) who may have less than desirable intentions toward the church and its’ members, or downright evil intent! But we also have to keep up our smiles and positive attitudes as well, while maintaining readiness every moment. All of you make that easy for us to do! Thank you everyone for your supporting words and spirits towards all of the officers working for you to keep you safe and without worry. Day of Prayer

Lift Up The Word; Light Up The World The Holy Spirit raised the roof off First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, 2 May 2024, during the 73rd Annual National Day of Prayer (NDP) event.

The months of preparation were meant for a beautiful sunny walk, filled with prayers, from First Presbyterian to Travis Park and on to Main Plaza for the gathering of San Antonio’s churches in prayer, praise and song. Early in the morning the team was anxious about the weather but the Holy Spirit had a better plan … a city revival!

Rain forecast drove the decision to stay inside. The National Day of Prayer walk shifted to Covenant Hall where we were joined by 80 fellow prayer warriors, to include 10 people from Laredo who themselves

recruited 1,000 prayer warriors to Franklin Graham’s Boarder Crusades earlier this spring.

Dr. Ha and Callan Brown led us in songs of “Holy, Holy, Holy” and “In Christ Alone” while God’s little lambs from FPC’s Children Center sang “This Little Light of Mine” to the delight of those gathered. They were such a hit that the children sang two more songs.

From the mouths of babes comes the Word!

We centered ourselves with “Sanctuary” and began our prayers and praises in song.

Opening remarks were given by Pastor Becky Prichard: “When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Ps 111:3).

“Does Prayer Work?” Eva Eckburg’s remarks were etched with examples of a resounding yes!

around our familes. Marianne Ryan prayed for the Church at large and Doug Handlin prayed about spiritual warfare surrounding the elections. Prayers for candidates and voters was given by Pete Geurts.

Jeanie Wehmeyer emphasized our responsibility in guarding what we watch in the Media. “While it is easy to make the media world our scapegoat for the destruction of godly values, morality and decency in our nation, we too often watch movies we know have content we shouldn’t watch.”

Bernita Cox, who has children in the military and a husband who served, spoke over the protection of our military as well as the government’s impact around the world.

“Ultimately, whatever the area of prayer emphasis, we must always come back to the purposes of God,” states Jeannie Dullnig. A special thanks to Jeannie for translating all the prayers into Spanish!

At 11:30 AM we joined the 300+ prayer warriors already gathered in song in Westminster Hall with standing room only!

Mayor Ron Nirenberg gave the NDP City Proclamation after which responsive readings and prayers were presented by Gene Loeffler (Lighthouses of Prayer), Randy Garcia (Three:16), Rafael Gutierrez (Puerta de Restoration), Joe Carroll (Biblical Leadership), Saul Hernandez (CEO La Nuestra Radio), David Walker (Alamo City Church), and Ed Newton (Community Bible Church).

Police Chief William McManus said to the audience “Pray for me, for my family and the entire San Antonio Police Department; we can never get enough (prayers).”

Prayers for the next generation were given by students from Texas A&M, UTSA, St Phillip’s College, Trinity University, UT Health, and our very own Sarah Gutierrez-Stephens from Navigators UTSA/Alamo College.

Executive Pastor for Faith Outreach, Charles Flowers, who just received an award for his service to the community at the NDP prayer breakfast the day before, stormed heaven on behalf of our government.

Scripture readings were given by school students, to include: The Christian School at Castle Hills, His Bridge Builders SA, Cornerstone Christian School, Northwest Hills Christian School, Achievers Center for Education, Ellsbury Home School, and Shepherd of the Hills.

Camila Correa prayed with such passion for her fellow students that she brought the house down!

“When I was 12 years old God saved me, in my room, from suicide off a TikTok video. I just want to talk to all the young people in the room, you don’t have to be ashamed to live for Jesus; it doesn’t matter your age, burn for Jesus now. There is nothing sweeter than knowing Jesus. My generation, Gen Z, is not far gone … I’m walking in a generation that will burn for Jesus, unashamed for him!” What a breath of fresh air found in our future generation!

Closing remarks included the celebration of Suzanne and Soapy Dollar’s 39 years of dedicated service on behalf of National Day of Prayer as they step down and pass the baton to the capable hands of Gene Loeffler, President, Lighthouses of Prayer.

S U M M E R 2024 M I S S I O N S Mission Trip Update: Yucatan Peninsula (May 28, 2024) Greetings from the Yucatan Peninsula! Our incredible journey with the students from Young Life and the dedicated team at Yucatan Peninsula Ministry (YPM) continues to unfold in remarkable ways.

Today, despite the sweltering heat of 40°C (104°F), our team displayed unwavering resilience and commitment to our mission.

Here’s a snapshot of our achievements:

Project Progress: •

Rods for Bathroom Columns: We successfully built 4 sets of rods with Armex for the bathroom columns, laying a solid foundation for the structure.

•

Land Cleanup: Several team members took on the ardent task of cleaning the land, collecting 4 bags of garbage to keep our project site and surrounding community clean.

•

Column Bases Cast: With precision and teamwork, we cast the bases of the columns, ensuring they are sturdy and ready for the next steps.

•

Block Base Placement: By the end of the day, we placed the block base, setting the stage for wall construction to begin tomorrow.

Community Connection: Beyond the hard work, we also experienced a spiritual high as we worshipped together with YPM and the local community. These moments of faith and unity remind us why we are here – to build not just structures, but relationships and hope. **Good job, team! Let’s continue to push forward together, building more than just walls but a stronger, united community!**

President's Letter June 2024 As I write this last article, my heart is full of gratitude to so many I have worked with this year.

It has been an honor, joy and privilege to serve as President of Women of The Church. This year has been an amazing gift filled with cherished memories.

Praise be to God for His bountiful blessings upon WOC as we close this 150th year of ministry to the First Presbyterian Church community.

Thank you to the 2023-2024 Circle Chairs and Moderators, the Officers, Program Chairs and Committees and to all the women of FPC who gave of their time, talents and treasures in service to others this year. Immense gratitude is extended to the dedicated FPC church staff. WOC works closely alongside the administrative team throughout the year and we are grateful for their attention and assistance.

What a meaningful year this has been as women have gathered for Circle meetings, Bible studies and service projects with House of Neighborly Service, Presbyterian Children’s Home, Morningside Manor and Gift of Christmas. In addition, donations, knitted shawls, literary discussions, inspiring luncheons speakers, Ladies’ Night Out evenings, staff appreciation lunches, memorial receptions, care and concern for church families, Christmas ornament sales and a celebratory May Coffee were some of the highlights WOC planned and enjoyed together.

The May Coffee is always the year-end celebration and last week was a joyous occasion as we honored former WOC Presidents. We are thankful to Laura Zachry for her warm hospitality as this year’s Coffee hostess and to Townsend Durbin, Karen Heydenreich

and Mary Ann Randolph for overseeing the details.

Following a long tradition, a Coffee offering was collected and the FPC Children’s Center Teacher Scholarship Fund and the Any Women Can Centers are designated as the beneficiaries.

The upcoming 151st year of WOC will soon be underway with the leadership of President Nancy Scheifele and President-Elect Lellen Lane. They were recently installed along with the new and returning officers during the Traditional Service on May 12.

The work of WOC is continuous, and year after year this organization is blessed with strong, faithful leadership that builds upon the examples set from years past.

With the Lord’s direction, Circles will begin meeting in September and a new year of study will begin. Stay tuned for these dates and notice of evening activities, luncheons and service projects as these are all wonderful opportunities to connect and become more acquainted with one another. This is an inspiring group of efficient, organized, thoughtful, caring, wise, creative and fun friends! You don’t want to miss out. The Women of The Church truly know what it means to care for others within this church and the community. Most importantly, their love for our Lord shines through all they do!

Older Adult Ministry KEEPING EVERYONE YOUNG IN SPIRIT

fpcsanantonio.org/keys May was a month full of surprises, starting with Pastor Joe's 70th Birthday Celebration. It was a memorable day, packed with special moments.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making it so special!

We were eagerly anticipating a sermon from Pastor Paul Kacsur, but unfortunately, he experienced a mild heart attack just days before.

He remained determined to join us until Thursday when he decided it was best to find a substitute speaker. Thankfully, Paul is recovering well, and we plan to have him speak in the fall.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Dr. Fred Brown, who provided us with a meaningful perspective on the sanctity of life.

While booking our Birthday Lunch, I found out that our initial restaurant couldn't accommodate large parties anymore. Luckily, The Stone Werks Café managed to fit us in on short notice, and we all enjoyed a delightful lunch there.

We observed Memorial Day with the special presence of Chaplain Enrique Jackson. His words reminded us of the profound sacrifices made by those who serve.

Summer Schedule

With the arrival of June, our summer schedule takes effect. During June, July, and August, we will not have our regular Friday meetings every week. However, our monthly Birthday lunches will still take place on the 3rd Friday of each month—except for June, when it will occur on the 4th Friday. The dates are as follows: - June: Friday, June 28 - July: Friday, July 19 - August: Friday, August 16 Keep an eye out for more information on exciting summer events, which may include trips to the theater and road trips.
