CALL TO CONFESSION

CONFESSING OUR SIN

Merciful Savior, in our rush to Christmas joy, we confess that, like our culture, we would prefer to skip Advent's invitation to stillness, reflection and preparation. Shiny wrappings and ornaments are more festive than looking at the ways we fall short of the call to be your people. Holiday parties and shopping conveniently blind us to the poverty of those who will celebrate your birth with neither tree nor gifts. Our busyness numbs us to the despair felt by many during this time of year. Thank you for the story of Christmas, that pierces our self-absorbed revelry with the truth we need to face: we are lost, we are broken, we need you. Come, Lord Jesus. Come into our hearts with mercies new this morning, grace sufficient for this day, forgiveness that cleanses us from our guilt and sin. We pray in His name and by the power of the Holy Spirit.

SILENT CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Leader: Friends, believe the good news!

People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.

AFFIRMATION AND DEDICATION

DECLARING OUR FAITH | The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

GLORIA PATRI

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

Sawyer Alcott, Emma Alexis, and Carter Allen Jackson, children of Melissa and Steve Jackson, receive the sacrament of baptism.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

PRESENTING OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS

(While the offering is received, please sign the friendship pad found on the end of the pews and pass it down the row, returning it to its original place. Please take time after the worship service to greet those seated near you.)

OFFERTORY | And the Glory of the Lord from Messiah G. F. Handel

DOXOLOGY | Old Hundredth

Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION

SCRIPTURE READING | Luke 2:1-7

PROCLAMATION

1 In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. 6 And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

SERMON | An Extraordinary Story Rev. Dr. Bob Fuller

CONGREGATIONAL WORSHIP | Hymn #191 It Came Upon the Midnight Clear & #203 Away in a Manger (Please Sing Verse 1 only)
