WELCOME MEET OUR NEW TRIBAL COUNCIL MEMBERS

M

atthew Pearson is the Secretary of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council as of 2018. Secretary Pearson chairs the Tribe’s Health & Human Services and Natural Resource Protection Committees, as well as the Tribe’s Good Medicine Project Advisory Board. Secretary Pearson holds a bachelor’s degree in media and communications from Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania, as well as a certificate in publishing from the University of Denver’s Publishing Institute.

Prior to his election, Mr. Pearson served as a board member for the Mashantucket Business Development Company, LLC, and directed the Tribe’s High Five Project – a grant-funded initiative designed to improve the physical, social, emotional, and cultural well-being of tribal adolescents.

Beyond his tribal obligations, Matthew Pearson serves as secretary of the Board of Directors for the Eastern Area Health Education Center, based at University of Connecticut’s School of Medicine.

In his rare free time, Matthew enjoys cooking, reading mystery novels, and spoiling his canine comrade, Bartlet.

L

atoya Cluff is a member of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council as of 2018. Councilor Cluff chairs the Tribe’s Community Planning and Housing Committees. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of University of New Haven, Ms. Cluff holds a master’s degree in labor relations with a concentration in human resources management. She achieved her Bachelor of Science in business management from Johnson & Wales University.

Councilor Cluff brings 15 years of tribal government, business, and management experience to the Tribal Council through past employment within the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Government and Gaming Commission, as well as at Foxwoods Resort Casino, Big Night Entertainment Group, and Fairview Healthcare.

Ms. Cluff’s community service began with volunteering for the Mashantucket Pequot Youth Council in her teens. She later served as a member of the Tribe’s Administrative Support, Education and Parks & Recreation Committees, and represented Mashantucket at the 1995 Indigenous Games as a basketball athlete. Ms. Cluff was also an active member of the Tribe’s Fox Dance Troupe, having proudly represented Mashantucket in a cultural performance at the 1996 Olympic Games opening ceremonies in Atlanta.

Councilor Cluff lives at Mashantucket with her husband, Minter, and sons Elijah and Jalen.

he Mashantucket Pequots are a Native Algonquin people who have endured centuries of conflict and survival on and around North America's oldest Indian reservation (est. 1666), located in southeastern Connecticut. In 1637, the Pequots survived the first genocidal massacre attempt against an Indian Tribe by Europeans on what would become continental United States soil. Pequot history is an unprecedented story of redemption and restoration, which is featured at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center. IN THE SPOTLIGHT FOXWOODS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

In 1997 a unique partnership was formed between the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation (MPTN) and Connecticut Community Credit Union, Inc. (CCCU), in which financial services were provided to the MPTN and Team Members of their entities, including Foxwoods Resort Casino.

A full service branch office of Connecticut Community Credit Union opened in October 1997 in the lobby of the Great Cedar Hotel.

The convenience of having an on-site banking facility proved popular with Tribal members and Foxwoods Team Members. The Credit Union hours were established to accommodate the many L-R: CCCU Board Secretary, Jimmie L. Willson; CCCU Board Chair, Susan M. Dowling; MPTN Treasurer, Jean M. Swift; CCCU President/CEO, Joyce A. McElhaney and MPTN Chairman, Rodney Butler shifts at Foxwoods; including two evenings until 8pm and Saturday mornings. Bilingual staff enabled Credit Union members the opportunity to conduct their transaction with ease and many times without the need of a translator. Full service ATM were installed at the MPTN Community Center, the CCCU branch office, and at the Fox Tower for the convenience of members.

When the Tanger Outlets opened, the Credit Union expanded its suite of services to include merchant accounts and a night depository.

A twenty year celebration was held in the lobby of the Credit Union with a cake cutting ceremony attended by representatives of MPTN, CCCU and Credit Union members. MPTN Tribal Treasurer Jean M. Swift, also a member of the Credit Union’s Board of Directors, had the honor of cutting the first slice of the cake. The exquisite cake was made by CAKE by Franck located on the casino level of the Great Cedar Hotel.

Getting to Know Suzanne Trout, Foxwoods Resort Casino's Chief Marketing Officer How did you end up in the hospitality industry, and ultimately in the gaming business?

After graduating from college, I took a summer job at an Atlantic City casino hotel with plans to move to New York City for an internship in the fall. However, I enjoyed my experience in the gaming industry so much that I stayed in AC as a hotel front desk clerk and then as front desk manager, and eventually in Marketing. From there, my gaming career has taken me to Las Vegas, Chicago, and finally here at Foxwoods Resort Casino.

What appealed the most to you when considering joining the team here at Foxwoods?

I visited Foxwoods and it was awe-inspiring! The breadth and depth of all of the different experiences we offer is unique. Not only that, the Executive Team here stands up to the best I’ve worked with, and I feel very honored to work for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.

How would you describe Foxwoods to someone who has never visited the resort?

Foxwoods is all of Las Vegas rolled up into one resort. It offers a world of choices. You can have a unique experience with every visit – from world-class gaming, bowling, 35+ dining experiences, to spas and shopping. You can even craft an outdoor adventure. It’s really up to the guest’s imagination. Plus, visitors can take advantage of local attractions like the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, as well as area attractions in Mystic.

With competition continuing to grow in the Northeast, what do you believe separates Foxwoods from other properties?

In addition to the customized experiences that we offer, the people and the service set us apart. More than half of the Foxwoods team members have been with us for over 10 years, so they know many of our guests by name. Our team members anticipate visitors’ needs. They are able to quickly and effectively provide the exceptional service that our guests have grown accustomed to over the past 25 years.

Lightning Round:

What are your favorite outside interests? I am a board member and a volunteer at several nonprofit animal shelters and animal rescue organizations.

What country would you most like to visit? I would like to visit Sweden, as my grandmother was from there.

What is your favorite meal? I am a sucker for crab cakes, and those served right here at Cedars Steakhouse & Oyster Bar are some of the best I have had.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? My mom always told me it’s never that hard to be kind. That advice has served me well.

KATHLEEN MADIGAN
