With the rising concern for road safety and the increasing number of fatalities due to road accidents, initiatives such as the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) have emerged as crucial endeavors.

The country ranks among the highest in the world in terms of road traffic accidents and fatalities. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for initiatives aimed at improving vehicle safety standards. Bharat NCAP addresses this need by evaluating the safety features and performance of vehicles sold in the Indian market.

MAY EDITION 2024 Bharat NCAP primarily addresses the ignorance about vehicles and vehicle safety in people and raises awareness among consumers. By providing safety ratings for various vehicles based on rigorous crash tests, Bharat NCAP empowers consumers to make informed decisions when purchasing cars. It also makes it mandatory for manufacturers to alter designs to best fit the Indian travel conditions, in terms of safety.

Through transparent evaluations and public disclosure of safety ratings, Bharat NCAP encourages manufacturers to enhance the safety features of their vehicles.

Bharat NCAP employs a comprehensive evaluation process to assess the safety of vehicles. This process typically involves conducting crash tests to evaluate the vehicle's performance under different impact scenarios.

Parameters such as occupant protection, child safety, pedestrian protection, and the effectiveness of safety features like airbags and seat belts are rigorously evaluated. The results of these tests are then used to assign safety ratings to the vehicles, providing valuable insights to consumers and manufacturers alike.

The introduction of Bharat NCAP has had a transformative impact on the Indian automotive industry. Manufacturers are now compelled to prioritize safety features in their vehicle designs to secure favorable ratings. This has led to the adoption of advanced safety technologies and the incorporation of structural enhancements to improve crashworthiness.

Consequently, consumers now have access to safer vehicles, thereby contributing to a reduction in road accidents and fatalities.

Cars will be assigned a rating between one star to five stars after being evaluated on three parameters — adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and safety assist technologies present in the car. The first two parameters will be calculated with the help of three different kinds of tests, which include a frontal offset test where a vehicle is driven at 64 kmph and with 40% overlap into a deformable barrier which represents the oncoming vehicle, which replicates a crash between two cars of the same weight. Other tests are the side impact test at 50 kmph and the pole-side impact test (where a car is crashed into a rigid pole sideways) at 29 kmph.

Though Bharat NCAP is voluntary, in certain cases, cars may be subjected to a crash test such as for a base model of a popular variant (minimum clocked sale of 30,000 units), or when the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recommends a model for testing based on market feedback or in the interest of public safety. Officials of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways say that automobile manufacturers have offered a total of 30 car models for crash testing under Bharat NCAP, without revealing the names of the auto companies willing to participate.

The objective of the program is to help consumers make an informed decision before purchasing a car, thereby spurring demand for safer cars. India sees nearly 1.5 lakh road fatalities in a year, accounting for 10% of deaths due to road crashes globally with only 1% of the world’s vehicles. According to a World Bank study, road crashes are estimated to cost the Indian economy between 5 to 7% of GDP a year.

ELON POSTPONED HIS TRIP TO INDIA – WHY?

Elon Musk has become one of the most popular celebrities and Entrepreneurs of the World. His approach, his way of dealing with most of things, his brand launches etc. stood out to many. I’m not exaggerating when I say that most of the people became his customers because of him and not what he created in his companies like Tesla, Starlink, SpaceX etc.

He is regarded as a ‘Genius’, ‘Entrepreneur’ and more by the people. He is expanding his businesses at a very faster pace. As a part of it, he was supposed to visit India, but he didn’t. What happened?

He has announced that he is due to arrive in India and schedule a meeting with the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. He is also expected to provide his confirmation about the establishment of Tesla facilities in India. Musk posted on X that he is “looking forward” to meeting Modi. The billionaire did not mention a date, but Indian media and Reuters reported, citing unnamed sources, that he is expected to meet the Indian leader in the fourth week of April, in New Delhi.

He was also planning to meet Indian space tech startups during his visit. Pawan Chandana, co-founder of Skyroot Aerospace, which launched India’s first privately developed rocket in 2022, told CNN that he will be meeting Musk during his visit.

Currently the world’s fourth richest man, Musk was likely to announce an investment of $2 billion to $3 billion in the South Asian country, mainly for building the new Tesla factory.

People were eagerly waiting for this meet, anticipating good things on multiple fronts.

But, unfortunately, Elon Musk announced that he is postponing his visit to India, a day before the intended meeting. The CEO in a post on X said, "Unfortunately, very heavy Tesla obligations require that the visit to India be delayed, but I do very much look forward to visiting later this year."

On Musk’s visit, PM Modi had said, "I want investment to come in India because in India, it doesn't matter who has invested money, (but) the sweat put into the work must be of our own people. The product should have the essence of our soil, so that our youth in the country will get employment opportunities."

MAY EDITION 2024 Musk’s visit to India came weeks after the Indian government announced a new electric vehicle policy under which import duty concessions will be given to companies setting up manufacturing units in the country with a minimum investment of $500 million, a move aimed at attracting major global players like Tesla. As per the policy, the companies that would set up manufacturing facilities for EV passenger cars will be allowed to import a limited number of cars at lower customs /import duty of 15 per cent on vehicles costing USD 35,000 and above for a period of five years from the date of issuance of the approval letter by the government.

At present, cars imported as completely built units (CBUs) attract customs duty ranging from 70 per cent to 100 per cent, depending on engine size and cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value less or above $40,000.

It was expected that the Tesla founder's visit would also provide a fillip to his other ambitious project in India – Starlink. Bloomberg had quoted "people familiar with the matter" as saying that Starlink had received assurances from the central government that it would be able to start operating in the country as soon as the third quarter of this year.

Experts have claimed that the operations of Starlink in India would mark a further deepening of the security partnership between India and the US.

Covid-19 pandemic is something that none of us, who have gotten through it, can forget in at least a decade. The pandemic which lasted for around a year or two, has scared us, made us run for medicines, confined us to our homes and reminded us how important it is to take care of ourselves and our health. Almost everyone of us have had two doses of vaccines to acquire permanent immunity against Covid-19. These vaccines are: Astrazeneca’s Covishield and Covaxin. People have gotten two doses of either of those vaccines based on the availability in their location, at the particular time.

But, one of the vaccines, is known to have been adversely affecting its recipients now i.e., long after it is taken. The aftershocks of Covid-19 are continuing. OxfordAstraZeneca’s vaccine is linked to a rare adverse side effect — thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS). This has been known for the past three years.

What is new is the company, which is being sued in a class action in the United Kingdom had shifted from its earlier position — from, “we do not accept that TTS is caused by the vaccine at a generic level” in May 2023 to “it is admitted that the AZ vaccine can, in very rare cases, cause TTS” in February 2024.

TTS typically manifests with symptoms such as severe headaches, abdominal pain, leg swelling, shortness of breath, and neurological deficits. Diagnosis involves blood tests to assess platelet levels and imaging studies to detect blood clots. Also, known as vaccine-induced prothrombotic immune

immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia (VITT), it is a rare syndrome reported in persons who received the adenoviral vector Covid-19 vaccines (there are several) and is generally understood to result from an immune response triggered by the adenovirus vector used in the vaccines. Typically presenting four to 42 days after vaccination, the symptoms are on account of thrombosis formation (blood clots) along with thrombocytopenia (low platelet count). It’s classified into two tiers. Tier 1 tends to be associated with younger age groups and is marked by more severe cases with a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. The hallmark of Tier 1 is the uncommon site of thrombosis such as brain or gut or other rare sites of venous and arterial thromboses. Healthcare providers closely monitor patients with TTS due to the potential for severe complications, including organ damage and death.

In contrast to the traditional clinical trials that follow a straightforward and inflexible three-step approach, Covid-19 vaccines took an expedited development route guided by the “adaptive

Benefits of the Covid-19 vaccine far outweigh the risk of extremely rare potential side effects, AstraZeneca said. “From the body of evidence in clinical trials and real-world data, the AstraZeneca-Oxford Vaccine has continuously been shown to have an acceptable safety profile”, the statement said.

After the statement was released by AstraZeneca, concerns have spiked in India, especially among those who have taken the vaccine. Political parties have questioned the government about the health issues caused due to the vaccine.

The opposition Congress on Wednesday alleged that the BJP government at the centre did not follow the guidelines of the World Health Organisation (WHO), and demanded that the relatives of those who died due to heart attack or similar reasons after taking the Covishield vaccine against coronavirus should be paid compensation.

Anglo-Swedish drugmaker AstraZeneca is withdrawing its Covid vaccine worldwide, Reuters reported quoting The Telegraph.

The application to withdraw the Vaxzervria vaccine was made on March 5 and came into effect on May 6, 2024. The company also withdrew marketing authorisation for the vaccine within Europe, reported Reuters.

LABOUR DAY May Day has its origin embedded into late 19th century. In the United States, the holiday was first celebrated in 1886, as part of the struggle for the eight-hour workday. On May 1st of that year, hundreds of thousands of workers across the country went on strike, demanding better working conditions and shorter working hours.

The strike was peaceful at first, but on May 4th, a bomb exploded at a labour demonstration in Chicago’s Haymarket Square, killing several people and injuring many others. The incident sparked a restraint on labour activism, but it also invigorated the labour movement and led to the establishment of May Day as a day of labour solidarity and protest. Five years later, U.S. Pres.

Grover Cleveland, uneasy with the socialist origins of Workers’ Day, signed legislation to make Labour Day— already held in some states on the first Monday of September—the official U.S. holiday in honour of workers. Canada followed suit not long afterward.

Gukesh Dommaraju became, at 17, the youngest ever Candidates ­winner and world championship challenger on Sunday after edging out the favourites Fabiano Caruana, Hikaru Nakamura and Ian Nepomniachtchi in a marathon six-hour final round in Toronto.

Gukesh will now meet the holder, China’s Ding Liren, in a 14-game series for the world crown from 20 November to 15 December. The world No 1, Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, abdicated his title in 2023 after a 10-year reign. Who is Gukesh Dommaraju?

He is a Chennai-born chess prodigy, who has defeated World No 1 Magnus Carlsen twice already, will open the campaign against fellow Indian Vidit Gujrathi. Gukesh is the third youngest player, after American icon Bobby Fischer and Carlsen, to make the cut for the prestigious tournament. India's 17-year-old Grandmaster Dommaraju Gukesh scripted history by winning the Candidates Chess Tournament in Toronto to become the youngest ever challenger to the world title, bettering a record created by the legendary Garry Kasparov 40 years ago. It was his school coach who recognised the teen chess prodigy's potential and trained him to become a FIDE-rated player. His father is an ENT surgeon and mother, a microbiologist. He has been making headlines since he became India's youngest Grandmaster at 12 years, 7 months and 17 days. He had achieved the feat in 2019 January. In September 2023, Gukesh replaced the legendary Viswanathan Anand as India's top chess player after more than three decades. Prior to this, Anand has been India's No.1 since July 1986.

Gukesh’s career has been marked by a consistent rapid advance since 2019, when he became a grandmaster at 12 years seven months, the third youngest in history after Abhimanyu Mishra of the US and Sergey Karjakin of Russia. It was then that his family decided to support him as a professional player, despite the financial risks involved. Later, he was the youngest ever to achieve a 2750 rating, and he won the individual top board gold medal at the 2022 Olympiad. He qualified for the Candidates by finishing top of the Fide Circuit, a league table of major tournaments.

Final leading scores were Gukesh 9/14, Caruana, Nakamura and Nepomniachtchi all 8.5, Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu (India) 7. Gukesh’s victory is a historic achievement. Until now, teenagers have had an indifferent record in the Candidates. Only Bobby Fischer in 1959 and Carlsen in 2006, both then 16, have been younger than Gukesh.

Garry Kasparov, who was the ­previous youngest Candidates winner at 20, called the result “an Indian earthquake in Toronto” and added “the children of Vishy Anand are on the loose” in a reference to India’s previous world champion, who mentored Gukesh and is his chess hero.

The Chennai teenager started the 14th and final round half a point ahead of his three rivals, and had the better of a draw with Nakamura, the USA’s world No 3. Caruana, the USA’s world No 2, had the chance to force a tie and a speed playoff, but failed to convert his winning position against Russia’s Nepomniachtchi. Their game lasted 109 moves and six hours before Caruana abandoned his attempts to make progress in what was by then a dead drawn ending. The American and the Russian have fought for the crown for the best part of a decade, and their mutual disappointment brought out a camaraderie between them, “Really sorry,” says Nepomniachtchi. “My fault,” replies Caruana.

A secret of his success has been his calmness and equanimity under pressure.

Away from the board, he likes to play outdoor sports, with tennis his favourite.

He regularly practices yoga, which helps his stamina. He remarked that, despite his lack of experience, his youth was a strength for such a long tournament: “It’s easier to be focused at my age.”
