The Paris Olympics 2024 has been an event all the sports enthusiasts and patriots were looking forward to. They are set to be a landmark event, marking 100 years since Paris last hosted the Summer Games.

This centennial celebration will blend the city's rich history with modern innovation, featuring iconic venues like the Eiffel Tower and the Champs-Élysées, as well as new sports.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad and branded as Paris 2024, were an international multi-sport event that occurred from 26 July to 11 August 2024 in France, with the opening ceremony having taken place on 26 July. With over 10,500 athletes competing for grabbing the coveted sports medals in various categories, Paris Olympics is one of the grandest celebrations of sports there is. Held 24 years after Paris hosted the Games of the II Olympiad in 1900 – part of the International Universal Exhibition – the 1924 Games marked the last edition of the modern Olympic Games. AUGUST EDITION

The iconic Eiffel Tower has been a part of the Olympics in more ways than one. While the beach volleyball event was held in a temporary outdoor arena under the tower, athletes will also carry a piece of the monument home as the Olympic medals will be adorned with original iron metal from the Eiffel Tower. For the first time in history, the public can have a first-hand Olympic experience, being allowed to run the same course of the Olympic marathon on the same day as the Olympians.

The River Seine hosted the marathon swimming event and the swimming leg of the triathlon at the Olympics, a century after it held some events during the first Paris Games in 1900. From 1923 until recently, swimming had been banned in the Seine due to water-quality issues, and for decades, the river was too toxic for most fish. Paris organisers have repeatedly assured the competitors that the water will be clean enough to swim during the Olympics.

The Phryges are the official mascots of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

They are based on the traditional small Phrygian hats, a symbol of France. Olympic organisers say the name and design were chosen as symbols of freedom and to represent allegorical figures of the French Republic.

Indian Athletes have been participating in the Olympics ever since 1920 and the Paris Olympics marked India’s 26th appearance in the Olympics. The Indian contingent for the 2024 Olympics consisted of 110 athletes who competed in 16 sports. They won six medals including a silver and five bronze. The country was thus ranked 71st amongst the 206 Committees that participated in the Olympics. This was India's second highest medal haul after the 2020 Summer Olympics.

AUGUST EDITION The men's field hockey team won the bronze medal in the men's event after they defeated Spain in the match for the third place. This was the country's second consecutive bronze in men's hockey at the Olympics. Neeraj Chopra then won a silver medal in the men's javelin throw event. With his gold medal in the 2020 Olympics, he became the fifth individual multiple medallists for India and first to win a gold and silver combination.

Aman Sehrawat won a bronze medal for India in the men's freestyle 57kg wrestling event.

The 21-year-old became the youngest Indian to win an Olympic medal.

Indian Wrestler, Vinesh Phogat, has been disqualified unfortunately because of the reason that she’s overweight by just 100 grams. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected her appeal against her disqualification from the 50kg category final at the Paris Olympics. Vinesh, who was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight during the second weigh-in on the morning of her gold-medal match, had also requested to be awarded a joint silver medal. However, CAS dismissed both her appeal and her demand for the medal.

There were several memorable moments in the Paris Olympics 2024, some of which made the headlines in meme culture. “Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec was cool as a cucumber en route to silver in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team”, NBC Olympics and Paralympics wrote on Twitter. He gained internet fame after showing up to the men’s 10-meter air pistol event in plain, squarerimmed glasses, while his competitors were equipped with specialized gear like noisecancelling headphones and shooting glasses.

When asked about the absence of fancy equipment, he said that those equipment are designed to narrow the field of vision and that he wished to have a wider field of vision, which is how it is done in the real world.

For the exact opposite reason as Dikec, South Korea’s Kim Yeji went viral during the women’s 10-meter air pistol event for her futuristic appearance provided by shooting’s specialized gear.

Dressed in a black tracksuit, sporting shooting glasses and standing with a casual pose, the internet dubbed her as having “main character energy,” with even Elon Musk calling for her to star in an action movie, as previously reported by the Deseret News.

Dr. Vennila Devi Suresh, a distinguished educator, holds a rich academic background with qualifications including M.Sc., B.Ed., M.Phil., M.Sc. (Psych), R.B.P., and D.C.H. She currently serves as a P.G. chemistry teacher in a government school and also plays a pivotal role as the Madurai Revenue District Coordinator for NEET and JEE exams. Dr. Vennila's passion for teaching and guiding students has been evident since she began her career as a Hindi teacher at the young age of 16. Her journey has seen her serve as a chemistry lecturer at Lady Doak College before transitioning to her current position in a village school in Parapathi, Madurai. BLACK MONDAY

Black Monday is a disaster in the Stock market which marked the beginning of a huge decline and altered the lives of several people. Black Monday occurred on October 19, 1987, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) lost 22.6% in a single day. The event marked the beginning of a global stock market decline, and Black Monday became one of the most notorious days in financial history. The S&P 500 lost even more than the Dow Jones with a 30% loss on the day.

Worldwide losses attributed to Black Monday were estimated at US $1.71 trillion. Many people feared that this might mark the beginning of another Great Depression.

There are multiple reasons for what might have caused this, but the exact reasons can never be known. Possible explanations for the initial fall in stock prices include a nervous fear that stocks were significantly overvalued and were certain to undergo a correction, persistent US trade and budget deficits, and rising interest rates. Another explanation for Black Monday comes from the decline of the dollar, followed by a lack of faith in governmental attempts to stop that decline.

A 20% drop ends trading for that day.

Hasina Overthrown: Bangladesh Explodes into Violent Chaos

After being in power for over fifteen years, Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina fled the country due to a month-long protest which included the deaths of over 300 people. The things quickly escalated after a month

protesting against the autocratic rule of the former Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina. She had to flee her country on 5th August as thousands of protestors stormed her residence in Dhaka, to the neighbouring country, India.

The things have been heated up since several weeks, but she held on to the power, fighting for it. During this time, a total of over 440 people were killed as the state

AUGUST EDITION The protests have erupted in the early July, when students began agitating against the ‘quotas’ implemented for Government jobs. The protests erupted at such a time when the economy was at its lowest, mostly due to mismanagement and corruption. The government of Hasina has become authoritarian over the last 15 years and the people were fed up that they revolted against the government disregarding the concern for their own lives. During these protests, at least 440 people were killed and thousands were wounded, since July 16. In January 2024, Sheik Hasina claimed her fourth consecutive term through a deeply-flawed elections. But, the lack of support for her was clear since the opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), boycotted the vote and the turnout was low.

In addition to the accumulated shortcomings from the government, the reaction of Hasina towards the protestors is what raised the flame. Her inclination towards crackdown, instead of having a dialogue with the protest leaders or choose diplomacy, increased the tensions. Ever since the protests started, the paramilitary forces have killed several people, just because they were protesting. The protests continued to erupt, demanding the accountability for the killings and the government’s resignation.

Hasina announced a strict curfew and switched off the internet, but images of the brutality had already spread rapidly on social media, inflaming anger at the regime. She tried to blame the BNP and other opposition parties for the unrest, and she deployed the army while police arrested protest leaders, claiming that its for ‘their own safety’. While in custody, the detainees were forced to issue statements calling off the movements. But, none of the Bangladeshis were fooled by her narrative that ‘terrorists’ and ‘anarchists’ were responsible for the violence. Then, on the 4th of August, a terrible round of bloodshed left close to almost 100 people dead, most of them being protestors shot by police and the ruling party members, acting as vigilantes.

Faced with the possibility of hundreds more deaths, Bangladesh’s newly appointed army chief Waker-Uz-Zaman – a distant relative of Hasina’s – made it clear to the prime minister that his troops would not step in to save the government. She hurriedly flew to New Delhi – which has been a staunch ally of her government.

As she was leaving, thousands of protesters stormed the official prime minister’s residence, taking selfies in Hasina’s bed and absconding with everything from paintings and ceiling fans to fish and chickens. Meanwhile, the army chief was holding talks with the country’s major political parties – minus the Awami League – and civil society representatives.

While Waker is calling the shots, formal power now rests with the president, Shahabuddin. He has already dissolved parliament and will oversee the swearing-in of an interim government late on 8 August, following consultations with the army chief and student leaders.

"FIRS WILL RUIN YOUR FUTURE" MAMTA BANERJEE THREATENING PROTESTING DOCTORS The tragic rape and murder of the female trainee doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Medical College and Hospital have drawn nationwide outrage, leading to protests by junior doctors who have halted work to demand justice for the victim.

On the day of the incident, a second-year postgraduate trainee doctor spent her night, like every day. She had dinner with her juniors and went to have some rest at around 2 AM. Due to lack of rest space available for the doctor in the hospital, she went to seminar hall to sleep, assuming that it was safe. The next morning, the seminude body of the doctor was found inside the seminar hall on August 9, after she had been on duty the previous night.

Several doctors who accessed the autopsy report have indicated a possibility of a gang rape. In an exclusive interview with India Today TV, DR Subarna Goswami pointed out that the kind of injuries inflicted by the 31-year-old trainee doctor cannot be the work of one single person. She said that according to the autopsy report, 151 mg of liquid (semen) was found from the vaginal swab. "That quantity cannot be of one person. It suggests the involvement of multiple people," Dr Goswami said. Preliminary autopsy reports indicated that the victim was sexually assaulted before her murder. The autopsy ruled out suicide and found multiple injuries consistent with a violent death, including broken bones and bleeding from various body parts.

The victim’s father was expressing grave concerns stating that there were clear indications of rape but the hospital was trying to delay the investigation as much as possible. PGT doctors at the hospital immediately stopped working across all departments except the emergency services, demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. Student associations organised rallies for a swift investigation. Opposition leaders, including Bengal BJP legislators, called for an independent magistrate-led investigation.

Sources suggested that her nose and mouth were covered, and her head was forcefully pushed against a wall or floor to silence her cries for help. The crime is believed to have occurred between 3 am and 6 am, with signs of strangulation and smothering.

AUGUST EDITION The police have arrested 33-year-old Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer, for his alleged role in the crime.

Evidence, including a torn Bluetooth earphone, helped lead to his arrest.

Roy had access to various hospital departments due to his connections with senior police officers and hospital authorities.

Allegations surfaced regarding Roy’s past behaviour, including previous marital abuse and his history of watching pornography.

The state government has implemented police camps in hospitals to enhance security for healthcare workers and has promised to transfer the case to the CBI if local police do not make sufficient progress by the weekend. After pointing out serious flaws and lack of support from concerned officials in the case and no significant progress, the Kolkata High Court transferred the case to the CBI.

During the protests in RGKAR hospital, around 40 people disguised as protestors, caused mass-beatings amongst the protestors and pelted stones at the police, also resorted to vandalism of the hospital property and tried to deface the protests. Videos show a mob of dozens pushing their way in the emergency ward of the RG Kar Hospital and vandalising chairs.

Some were even seen vandalising the protest site. The CBI has taken over the investigation of the Kolkata rape and murder case. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said it's a “big crime" and the accused should hanged to death. She blamed “Bam [Left] and Ram [BJP]" for RG Kar vandalism on Wednesday night. Her statement came after vandalism and rampage incidents were reported outside RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. Meanwhile, doctors and nurses continue to protest in Kolkata over the incident. Protests were also help outside AIIMS Delhi.

Amidst the protests and intensified protests, the Chief Minister of West Bengal has made some outrageous comments: “Earlier if men and women would hold hands, they would get caught by parents and reprimanded but now everything is so open. It’s like an open market with open options,” she said as quoted by IBNlive.

The Trinamool Congress chief alleged that a section of media was suppressing facts and causing “news pollution”, pointing to projection of few rape incidents in the state. “Everyday rape incidents are being highlighted as if the entire state has become the land of rapists. Rape is sought to be glorified by these people. This will not be tolerated by people. I would like to say that negative journalism only destroys and it is time to champion positive journalism,” she said.

I don’t know what is more shameful: To not consider that rapes are happening everyday and not do anything about it (or) to take such a heinous national crime and turn it into a political vendetta and leverage it to throw mud onto each other (or) to take such an incident as an opportunity and brush off their personal controversial opinions onto the people without being accountable for the position of power they’re in and the sense of responsibility they have, as a human being. Recently, Donald Trump has joined the list when, in a failed assassination on 14 July 2024, a bullet which was supposed to hit his head, grazed his ear and left him alive. Donald Trump’s assassination is the first in 43 years after Ronald Reagan, to have been plotted and executed.

Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old, is the main suspect of the attempted assassination of Trump, according to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and was killed by US Secret Services agents. The attack at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, injured Trump and critically injured two others, while one participant was killed. The alleged shooter is said to have used the AR15 semi-automatic rifle to carry out the killing. Trump is the first candidate since George C. Wallace in 1972 to be wounded by a shooter on the campaign trail.

Trump, being a former president, is protected by the US Secret Service, one of America’s oldest federal law enforcement agencies, which was assigned the responsibility of protecting the president in 1901. After the assassination of president John F. Kennedy in 1963, the agency underwent stringent reforms. The Secret Service was originally founded with the mandate to combat the rampant counterfeiting of currency in 1865.

At the end of the US Civil War, about one-third of all currency in circulation was counterfeit.

However, in 1901, after William McKinley — the third US president to be assassinated, while in office — the Secret Service was tasked with the full-time protection of the president.

Since then, only president John F. Kennedy has been killed under the full-time protection of the Secret Service.

The attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump goes beyond domestic politics and will affect the way the world looks at the US and its democracy.

Fox News has reported that various world leaders have condemned this incident and many have said that this is an attack on democracy.

Many analysts noted that the US which is seen to be in the forefront when it comes to “protecting democracy” has a challenge at home and needs to focus on that. Throughout history any attempted assassination has been memorialised, canonised and imprinted onto the public psyche. In many cases the act of assassination has been a turning point—from Benazir Bhutto, to Indira Gandhi to John F Kennedy and Abraham Lincoln, all these world leaders have had an abrupt end to their flaring political careers, but are remembered more for their good than bad, regardless of which side of the political line the public of the day inclines.

While many have come up with conspiracy theories after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, Trump has received words of assurance, condolence and kindness across the board. The imagery of blood trickling down his face and fist up in the air is quite iconic and heroic—supporters who loved him love him more, and the ones who did not look at him are looking at him now. The image of him with blood splattered across his right cheek, when the bullet grazed the upper part of his right ear, with his right fist held high, surrounded by bodyguards, uttering ‘Fight, Fight, Fight’ will go down in history as one of the iconic moments.

This unprecedented event has not only pivoted attention away from major world issues, at least in the US, but it could also be a major turning point for the outcome of the current election. It has already charged the Republican Party, and it will continue to shape their strategy as they move forward with packaging their rhetoric. Veteran former Clinton campaign consultant, Dick Morris suggested that the assassination attempt on Trump would serve the Republicans in this period of election and would cause issues for the Democrats in the upcoming elections. While in a conversation with WABV for their podcast, he said, “Functionally, the race is over. [Trump] wins if he lives. … There’s nothing that can get into Trump’s path except a bullet.”
