O

n May 17th, the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network, TMMSN, received a call that a live dolphin was on the beach near the Louisiana border. The Network’s rescue team made the two-hour journey from Galveston to the stranding site and found a six-week-old baby bottlenose dolphin beached on the sand exposed to the midday sun.

There were no signs of his mother in the nearby waters. They had no idea why he stranded. The poor little guy had been lying on his left side so the skin on his right side and eye had received severe sun exposure.

Dolphins are extremely sensitive to the effects of direct sunlight and heat while out of the water. Ideally when a

marine mammal has stranded people can help them by providing shade and placing a cool, wet towel on their bodies until the professionals arrive.

The little male dolphin was transported to the rescue facility in Galveston where he received fluids and emergency medical care. There he was placed in a specially designed rehab pool and surprisingly began swimming on his own. The team was very worried that even though he looked strong, his chance of survival due to his young age was not in his favor.

Very few dolphins orphaned at this age have survived to adulthood. A week after arriving at the facility he looked so strong that they decided to name him Trooper.

Trooper would not accept a bottle so he has been fed via a stomach tube every three or four hours around the

clock. Since you can’t go to Kroger and buy a jug of dolphin milk, a batch of formula is made fresh daily, consisting of heavy cream, powdered milk substitute, liquefied herring fillets, water and vitamins. The feeding tube is carefully passed into his open mouth and into his stomach to deliver his liquid meal in about sixty seconds.

He is released from the volunteer’s arm to return to his pool. Now five weeks into his rehab he still must be fed by a stomach tube. Baby dolphins can be introduced to fish at four to five months of age. Until that age, all his nutrition must come from the formula.

Over the next ten days some damaged skin from his burns died and was removed. He received antibiotics and burn cream treatment to prevent infection. A month later his wounds are healing well and are pain free. He

will have permanent scars but those will not affect his long-term quality of life. His right eye, also damaged from the sun, is improving slowly.

Trooper’s outlook is good thanks to the efforts of the TMMSN’s director, Heidi Whitehead and her team of dedicated volunteers. Since Trooper stranded at such an early age he would never be able to learn hunting and survival skills that his dolphin mother and pod members would have taught him. For this reason he will likely be placed permanently in a marine park with other dolphins rather than released into the wild. If released into the ocean his chance of survival would be poor. In marine parks sometimes adult female dolphins will act as a surrogate for a young animal that is not their own and provide the emotional support any baby animal deserves. We all hope Trooper has a happy life to look forward to.

Hundreds of volunteer hours go into the care of each stranded marine mammal. Thousands of dollars of supplies and medications are also needed for a successful rehabilitation.

The TMMSN , 4700 Ave Q in Galveston, has been in operation since 1980, and has rescued hundreds of dolphins, whales and porpoises along the coast of Texas. They recover the bodies of deceased animals and conduct research on them to help marine mammal conservation efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. Some of the poor animals recued are very old and too sick to survive and never make it back to the sea. Others that have been injured by sharks, boats or fishing lines are cared for in their hospital until well enough to be released. It takes many dedicated local volunteers, abundant supplies and sometimes months of hard work to successfully rehab each injured or sick dolphin. Galveston is very fortunate to have this state of the art facility to do this important

work. Every animal that comes to this facility receives expert medical care and loads of kindness. The volunteers are very proud of their efforts when a recovered dolphin is released and swims off to live a good life back in the ocean. The dolphins that are saved but not releasable are placed in facilities around the country to live long lives with other dolphins.

FUN FACTS About Galveston This month, let’s take a look at the Island’s history on schools.

1949: Galveston created a independent school district

1847: The first parochial school Ursuline Academy opened.

1964, Galveston schools partially integrated under a policy known as “Freedom of Choice.”

Prior to 1881, all education in Galveston was private or parochial.

1881: Galveston, organized a public school district with 20 teachers and grades 1-7.

1883: George Ball, a local man, financed construction of a new school, that would become Ball High School. An all white school.

1884: George Ball died without seeing his gift completed.

1885: Central High School opened for black students.

1968: Galveston’s three existing Catholic high schools: Kirwin High School, Dominican High School, and Ursuline Academy consolidated becoming O’Connell preparatory school.

Central High and Ball High also merged into one high school in 1968.

Galveston has had a long history of advancements in education. See you next month!

People Who Watch Videos In Public With No Headphones

O

ne of the most enjoyable things we can do is to go out to our favorite restaurant to experience a fine dinner, refreshing drinks, and relaxing conversation.

It’s one of the real pleasures of life.

Unfortunately, in these days of 24/7 technology, the chances of having a wonderful evening ruined are much higher. Add that to the fact that common courtesy has seemed to have gone out of favor and you have a real recipe for disaster.

Do we like it when these extremely rude people that do not care about anyone but themselves bombard our evening?

W E D ON ’ T L I K E TH A T! Peer pressure can put a halt to this. We should refuse to allow this horrible practice to continue in public places with no headphones in use. Let’s make it happen!

Many of us have experienced this firsthand. We get seated at our table, we order the beverage of our choice, and start looking forward to some engaging conversation with the people we are with.

And then it happens, seated right next to us is a group of people sent directly from hell. They are equipped with every electronic device known to mankind and they fully intend to use them all throughout dinner.

To make matters even worse, not a single one of them has manners enough to at least use headphones. They turn on their movies, YouTube videos, video games, and of course they have to play them at maximum volume. They either have the illusion that we might actually be interested in what they are doing, or more realistically, they are in their own world and could care less about anyone else.

This is beyond irritating and is becoming more common even in the nicer establishments. It’s not just young people doing it either. Many adults are also just as obnoxious.

Kybella is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that destroys fat cells in the area under the chin. Kybella is a synthetic deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body, that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, it destroys the fat cells which your body then removes. Bob has played in bands that have backed up country legends like Hank Thompson, Ray Price, Jack Greene, Pam Tillis, and Dale Watson.

Along with songwriting, Bob is also a talented cartoonist and has a self syndicated comic strip titled “Buffalo Gals”. The

our heart began beating 22 days after you were conceived and continues pumping on average 80 times a minute.

At the rate of 80 BPM that gives a ballpark figure of 42,075,904 beats per year, give or take a couple million. A reasonable estimate for the number of heartbeats in a lifetime is about three billion. If your heart could talk to you, he/ she might say, “Hey! I’ve got to beat 42 million times A YEAR, so take better care of me and we can live together a lot longer! You take care of me, I’ll take care of you.”

Last month we began to explore what it means to be fit. We introduced the seven components which contribute to our overall good health, fitness, and mental well-being: cardiorespiratory conditioning, muscular strength and endurance, stretching and flexibility, core stability, nutrition, mental rest and relaxation, and sleep.

This month we will dive into the first component, cardiorespiratory conditioning. This is really just a fancy way to say exercising your heart and lungs. Fit heart and lungs will be able to supply enough fuel during physical activity via the body’s circulatory (blood) and respiratory (lungs) systems. So how do you take care of your ticker? You can improve your cardiorespiratory endurance through regular exercise.

Activities that help improve the condition of your heart and lungs are those that cause an elevated heart rate for a sustained period of time. Cardiorespiratory fitness has been found to help reduce the risk of heart disease, lung cancer, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.

Performing activities that elevate your heart rate increase your cardiorespiratory conditioning in several ways. The heart muscle is strengthened so it can pump more blood per heartbeat. Simultaneously, additional small arteries are grown within muscle tissue, so blood can be delivered to working muscles more effectively when needed.

While the heart steadily strengthens over time with regular exercise, the respiratory system does not adjust to the same degree. Lung function does not drastically change by making the lungs stronger per se, but instead, oxygen that is taken in by the lungs is used more ef-

fectively. When a person inhales, their lungs fill up with air, and some of the oxygen it contains passes into the bloodstream. This oxygen-rich blood then travels to the heart, which circulates it around the body to the tissues and organs that need it.

Your muscles require an adequate supply of oxygen and other nutrients to work properly during high-intensity or extended periods of exercise. If the muscles do not get enough nutrients, waste products begin to accumulate and cause fatigue.

In general, exercise encourages the body to become more efficient at taking on, distributing, and using oxygen. This improvement, over time, increases your cardiorespiratory conditioning and overall health.

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends aerobic exercise (ones in which you get your heart rate elevated) 3-5 times per week for 30-60 minutes, at an intensity that keeps the heart rate at 65-85 percent of the maximum heart rate. Though it depends on many factors, a desirable resting heart rate is between 60 and 80 beats per minute, and a healthy blood pressure is less than 120 over 80 mmHg. When you can move your cardiorespiratory workouts up a level, it is best to exercise beyond 30 minutes (up to 40 minutes or longer) at a moderate intensity since the body begins to metabolize fat after 30 minutes of aerobic activity. That’s excellent news for those of us interested in losing weight since the glucose is used up, and the body begins fat metabolism instead.

While the prospect of donning your sneakers, opening your front door to be met with a blast of heat and humidity and going out to pound the pavement for a few miles may not appeal to you, there are so many other ways you can get into the game of cardiorespiratory fitness! For many people who get minimal exercise, adding more activity to their lives can begin with simply walking more. If possible, you may decide to walk to work rather than drive or go for a walk in your neighborhood or on our fabulous beaches in the evenings. Grab your significant other and your dog and go out there together.

My husband and I have some of our most enjoyable conversations while we are walking our dogs together. You can really learn a lot about another person while walking together at the end of the day when the stress of work is over.

Some people may take up a new activity such as dancing. Those who already have a pastime such as golf may add more active elements to it, such as forgoing the use of a golf cart.

The challenge could be if you can outrun the mosquitoes when that inevitable influx comes.

Other examples of cardiorespiratory activities are swimming, jogging, cycling, or group fitness classes such as Step, Zumba, Pound, and low impact floor aerobics. For some, the comradery of a group fitness class experience is just what they need to stick with a new exercise regime.

The people in your class become your workout family - you help hold each other accountable for showing up to sweat together, you find common ground in comparing your sore muscles with each other, you celebrate that the pain you feel today will be the strength you all have tomorrow. For others, their heart-pumping activities are more comfortable as a solo endeavor. Whichever is your preferred method of achieving heart and lung fitness makes no difference. What is important is to find which cardiorespiratory activities you enjoy and do them regularly and for the long haul! Find something you can inject into your lifestyle and make it a part of your everyday routine.

People who consistently take part in these activities are more likely to be physically fit in terms of cardiorespiratory conditioning. It is important to begin these activities slowly and gradually increase the intensity. And you should always seek the advice of a health professional to determine your current state of health and receive recommendations for a fitness program.

Cardiorespiratory conditioning is an indication of a person’s overall physical health. Getting regular physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, can improve your heart and lungs’ ability to help you move comfortably through life. So take care of your ticker!

Highlighting Galveston’s Best of the Best Dining Experiences.

S

ome places just defy description. They are so over-the-top that words fail me. Gypsy Joynt is such a place. Eclectic, Hippie, Unique, Creative, Strange, Mind boggling, Alternate reality and Counterculture all wrapped up into a commune masquerading as a restaurant. One visit is all it will take to convince you I am not exaggerating. If anything, I have understated and you may come up with your own set of superlatives.

That said, what drives throngs of people to this outpost on Market Street every day? Certainly not the counter service with long lines, the self-serve seating, the free pinball, or the warehouse setting.

It is the food and the people, period! A huge and adventurous menu, an accomplished bakery, reasonable prices and down-home family friendliness. It is no wonder this restaurant is consistently cited as one of the best places to eat on Galveston Island.

To understand it all it is necessary to travel back in time to a place in Great Barrington, Massachusetts where the Weller family, headed by Keith and Lori, moved their family consisting of five children, a grandchild and son-in-law from North Carolina where

they had operated a restaurant for ten years.

Lori a Born On Island (BOI) Galveston native said her inspiration to relocate to Massachusetts was an “Arlo Guthrie” groupie sort of thing. No doubt inspired by the movie Alice’s Restaurant set in Stockbridge in the 1960’s.

After six years of success in Massachusetts the family, now grown to include a daughter-in-law and two more grandchildren and with their lease expiring, decided it was time to come home to Galveston.

“Everything had to be packed” said Weller. We had five apartments and a restaurant full of stuff.”

Locating into a vacant building on West Market Street into what at the time was a “sketchy” area was a business risk. I remember visiting in their early days of opening. It was a chaotic scene with random tables, a huge unfinished space and a temporary air conditioner trying - not very successfully - to cool the cavernous space.

However, hard work and good food prevailed and soon there were lines out the door. Today the air conditioning works, there are a few more tables and lots more decorations, but much remains the same. The long lines at lunchtime, the chaotic ordering system and the scramble for an empty table. It all adds to the ambience and charm of this place. That it is crowded is a testimony to the fact that underneath all the hyperbole is a professional group of restaurateurs that are deadly serious about their food.

Their menu is overwhelming. I counted 118 individual items. This does not include specials and variants that could easily push that number up a decimal point. The menu defies easy classification as does the restaurant

Gypsy Joynt Galveston itself. The menu may be roughly grouped as follows: Seasonal Specialties, Niblets and Snacks, Burgers, Pizzas Sandwiches, Salads, Tacos, Plates, Hot Dogs, Sides and Desserts. There is literally something for every taste and every diet or food restriction.

The range is astonishing. Just under sandwiches you can choose from a barbecue pulled pork or brisket, a Vietnamese style Banh Mi, a Cajun shrimp and crawfish tails or an Italian combination deli style sandwich.

Many dishes have whimsical names. There is a Sleazy Mac & Cheese consisting of crawfish, bacon, asparagus, red pepper spread, jalapenos, fresh basil, and breadcrumbs. I assume there is some mac and cheese in there also. Or how about a “Fannie by the Sea�?

Fried green tomato slices, pikey sauce, jumbo lump crab, mozzarella balls, fresh blueberries, and watermelon.

Their baked goods are amazing and their cinnamon rolls legendary. They take orders and can custom bake a cake for any occasion. They have a thriving catering business and can handle gatherings of any size.

There you have it. Creative dishes made with quality ingredients and expertly executed in a fun setting.

Large portions and a reasonable price. We are indeed fortunate to have the Weller family back home in Galveston!

Build your own burger or choose from an array of specialty creations. My personal favorite is the “Black and Blue Burger” with chunky pungent blue cheese and bacon. Another local favorite is their “Sticky Monkey Burger” with peanut butter, bacon, American cheese and grilled bananas. It sounds strange until you taste it. Those flavors come together like a party in your mouth. There may a chicken item or two on the menu but this is a burger place and a carnivore’s delight. Do not bring your vegan friends here!

ocated in an historic building on the edge of the Strand shopping district in downtown Galveston is the Hubcap Grill. Occupying the space of the former Bistro Lecroy, this outpost of the wildly popular Houston burger chain got off to a rocky start. Originally envisioned as an upscale seafood restaurant, It was subsequently remodeled and repurposed as an outlet of the burger chain a short time after opening.

Highly acclaimed in Houston with long lines at lunchtime, the specialty burger chain struggled to gain traction in the Galveston market. Located on the fringe of the Strand District certainly contributed to the issues as did pricing in this cost sensitive market as the previous seafood venue had been quite expensive. Continuous staffing turnover, absentee management and uneven food and service reviews further hurt their reputation and downtown parking issues certainly did not help.

The restaurant continued to struggle until local businessman Frank Caruso and his wife Teffeny purchased the franchise and took over operations. With hands-on management, attention to detail and a knowledge of the local market, they have turned this into a thriving restaurant and lively bar scene.

Ongoing gentrification of the East Strand area certainly helped as did their attention to craft beers, specialty drinks and a slightly expanded menu.

Their skillful use of Facebook and electronic messaging helped spread the word, but mostly it is just their hard work and long hours that make the difference.

Entering the restaurant from the Strand, you proceed to the bar at the rear and place your food and drink order and pay. I am not fond of counter service at this price point, but it is increasingly common in Galveston

Hubcap Grill takes great pride in their products. They use 100% freshly ground chuck that is hand formed into patties daily. The patties are served on homemade toasted buns and their toppings are freshly cut daily.

Numerous awards testify to their quality. Travel & Leisure Magazine said that “Hubcap Grill may just have the best burger in America”.

As good as their burgers are, their French fries are even better. In a world of dreary frozen, mushy and flavorless fries, these are outstanding.

Freshly cut from whole potatoes and double fried, they set the bar very high for Galveston French fries. Order them plain or with a variety of toppings. They are a treat!

An extensive bar with a nice selection of craft beers in bottles and on tap pair nicely with your burger. If you are brave enough, order their ultimate bloody mary. An over the top concoction that is a meal in itsef. If you prefer wine, they have an extensive selection and even do occasional wine tastings in the evening.

This is not a fast food restaurant so order a drink, find a table and enjoy the decor in this century old building. Your food will be out soon enough.

Frank and Teffeny are very active in the community and have been restoring one of the grandest homes in our historic East end. You may see the home if you take the self-guided tree sculpture tour. It is the home with the mermaid carving. A warm and gregarious couple, take the opportunity to drop by and say hello. You will leave with a full tummy and a new friend.

LOCAL BUSINESS COMPLIANCE SURROUNDING THE NEW GUIDELINES

A

fter a several week shutdown of in-house dining with my trash can overflowing with styrofoam take-out containers, the news of a partial reopnening was generally well-received.

However, the announcement coincided with weekend events that brought overflow crowds to the beaches that generally ignored safe spacing and other recommended COVID-19 containment actions.

As feared, it appears a surge in new cases is now upon us even as the governor has further relaxed the restrictions to allow in-house dining capacity at 75% of pre-COVID levels. While we make no judgement regarding these actions and timing, here are our observations regarding local actions and compliance. These observations are only for restaurants.

Cocktail lounges, taverns and neighborhood bars are not included.

In general, compliance to guidelines has been very good. I personally have observed a strong COVID protocol being practiced, more so in locally owned restaurants than the chains. Table spacing, masking of employees, hand sanitization, temperature testing of people coming on shift and employer sponsored testing have been widely adopted and there is a high level of customer safety awareness among employees and management. Many restaurants have voluntarily limited seating to less than allowed to promote safety and I applaud their decision to put safety ahead of profits.

testing positive for the virus. I heartily applaud the actions of Mike Dean of Yagas and others who have put the safety of their customers and employees above all else and made these difficult decisions.

Hopefully the closures will be short lived and infrequent. All I can say is we know who you are and we will remember the actions you took to protect us all.

This highly popular restaurant frequently has large crowds awaiting seating. This action butresses the social spacing protocol already in place. Thank you Lisa.

Also Sonny’s, that venerable island institution on 19th Street, has announced a soft re-opening with a limited menu.

Yes, the muffaletta is available and Junior is still telling his jokes - albeit muffled through a mask.

Sonny’s Place 1206 19th Street Galveston, Texas 77550 409-763-9602 Koop’s, that ever popular Barbecue restaurant on 23rd Street, originally started in a food truck before moving to their full service location. It seems now they are bringing back the food truck and locating it in the West end of the island.

They will continue to operate their 23rd Street location. This is wonderful news for the folks that live in the underserved West end and also for PJ and his wife Tara who have made an indelible imprint on island dining in a very short time. Stay tuned for location information.

It now appears that a Panda Express is imminent. Look for it to be located on 61st Street near Avenue S. In other news, we are happy to report that award winning Chef Douglas Hand, formerly of Bubba Gump’s, will be joining Dennis Byrd’s team at The Spot as executive chef. See our Spotlight article in this issue.

a rbara Parker & Lynn Nielsen are Galveston Residents. Lynn and her husband live in a historical home and Barbara has an Artist Loft downtown, both with private studios.

Barbara has been working with stained glass for 29 years, and Lynn is an accomplished Photographer.

Both met almost 6 years ago, instantly becoming friends.

They wanted to do a stained-glass window, so together they created a one of a kind glass mixed media piece that still hangs in Lynn’s studio.

Both having medical issues, they decided not to let illness hinder them from their passion, which is to work with glass and let art heal them with love and laughter.

Translucent Studio Galveston. They use windows and reclaimed wood frames from historical homes as well as stained and recycled hand-dyed glass, broken vases, bowls, and seashells from our very own beach. They also build on canvas, where everything is covered in a non-yellowing epoxy resin.

Over the course of 6 years, they have added several different forms of glasswork, both representing their unique style. The studio offers classes that will resume soon, and both participate in donating art to various Galveston community events.

Your Bum had an idea the other day while I was out riding around in my ol’ scarab.

Whitney Houston also recorded this song and it became a mega-hit in 1992 when it was featured in the movie The Bodyguard. When your Bum researched this song, I was amazed to discover that it is not a romantic song at all. This song is about the breakup of the professional relationship between Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner. In 1973, Dolly had hit a roadblock in her professional relationship with Porter Wagoner, her mentor and on-screen duet partner. She had agreed to star on his TV program, The Porter Wagoner Show, for five years and had done so with great success - but she was ready to go out on her

own and make her own career. Unfortunately, Porter wasn’t ready to see her go, and they were butting heads over Dolly’s decision. “There was a lot of grief and heartache there, and he just wasn’t listening to my reasoning for my going,” Dolly told CMT back in 2011. “I thought, Well, why don’t you do what you do best? Why don’t you just write this song?... So I went home and out of a very emotional place in me at that time, I wrote the song, I Will Always Love You.” The next day, armed with her new song, Dolly walked back into the office and asked Porter if he could hear her out for a minute. During Presley’s late 1960s and 1970s live performances, Can’t Help Falling In Love was performed as the show’s finale. Lyrics include... Like a river flows, Surely to the sea, Darling, so it goes, Somethings are meant to be. Take my hand, Take my whole life too, For I can’t help falling in love with you.

You Are So Beautiful - Joe Cocker was always one of your Bum’s favorite performers. He recorded You Are So Beautiful in 1974. It proved to be Cocker’s biggest all-time single hit. The song was written by Billy Preston and Bruce Fisher. Beach Boy Dennis Wilson also contributed heavily to this lovely song. Preston proclaimed that he wrote this song to honor his mother. Lyrics include... You are so beautiful to me, You are so beautiful to me, Can’t you see, You’re everything I hoped for, You’re everything I need, You are so beautiful to me.

I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing - Performed by Bum favorite Aerosmith, I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing was released in 1998 and featured in the movie Armageddon. This amazing song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. It also won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year. Fantastic lyrics include... Angel Eyes - Angel Eyes was recorded by Jeff Healey and featured on his very first album, See The Light, released in 1988. This song asks the age-old question, how did I ever get a woman like this?

Unchained Melody - Unchained Melody was first recorded by the Righteous Brothers way back in 1965. It was a top-selling record at the time. The song experienced a dramatic rebirth in 1990 when it was featured in the top-grossing movie Ghost starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. Your Bum is going to set aside his man card for a minute and tell you that I really enjoyed this movie and the soundtrack that went with it. I obviously wasn’t the only one that loved it because Ghost did over $505 million dollars at the box office when it was first released. The lyrics fit the plot of the movie perfectly... ow many times, while kingfishing, have you heard “Let it run, let it run” being shouted? Well the fisherman “lets it run”; attempts to set the hook and it doesn’t happen.

With this scenario in mind while fishing on the partyboat Texsun IT out of’ Galveston last September, I came up with this rigging and fishing method.

Linda Adams who lives in Oklahoma City, wanted to catch her first kingfish. Freespooling after the strike is often hard for some to master when that combination of excitement and adrenalin kicks in. With the Kingfish Easy Hooking Rig - the “let it run” to a count of four or so isn’t necessary.

Using this technique, Linda caught her first, and the only kingfish, of the trip. . .the one that didn’t get away.

The experienced as well as the novice fisherman can benefit from this rig’s hook type and placement in the baitfish. The wire leader, at the Daichi DS4Z hook, has a haywire twist connection, then a slow twist around the leader. Next, do three-barrel wraps, the tag end is the impaler, cut to a l 1/2” length: bend it at a 45 0 angle to the leader. The impaler must be oriented so that it is parallel with the hook bend. This will let the impaler be placed into the bait and the hook aligned without any binding into the baitfish’s side as shown in the illustration. The distance from the hook bend to the impaler will vary according to your bait’s size.

The total length of the leader should be 18-24” since about 3 to 5” of it will

be in your baitfish if it’s 6 to 7” long.

I use #7, 80# Malin, coffee color for making my hard wire leaders and size 4, 130# Spro Power Swivels for the connector to my mono. The hook and leader go through the baitfish’s mouth and out the left gill plate. Again, the placement of the baitholder/impaler and the hook are critical. See where the impaler location in the pelvic fin area puts the hook before inserting the hook into the baitfish’s body.

Then, insert the impaier (see the dashed line on the illustration of the impaler in the baitfish.) The impaler takes the load, not the hook. This insures a straight and natural, not curled look which attracts strikes as it is freelined out with the current. The hook, a Daiichi DS4Z which is shown in the illustration has been bent to have a slight offset to the left. This is why it is in the baitfish’s left side; the hook point is exposed for a surer hookup. No matter whose circle hook you use, if it has an offset, place the hook in the baitfish’s matching side.

That is, offset to the left goes left, right offset goes into the right side.

This may not matter a lot, but it’s the way I do it. The Daiichi’s Bleeding Bait color and its placement toward the back of the baitfish work together to attract the strike and hook the shortstrikers. After baiting up with anyone’ s hook, always check your hook point for an impaled scale. That scale can be the equivalent of a very dull hook! This rigging can also be used with a live baitfish - be careful not to damage it when hooking.

My hook of choice for most of my offshore fishing is the Daiichi D84Z Bleeding Bait Circle Chunk Light in 7/0 size. This is a light wire, quick penetrator, sure hooker and holder and they are strong beyond belief for their size. As with any circle hook, keep the point and palt of the bend exposed for the best hookups — don’t mask the point area with your bait.

In the leader/swivel area, most of the time use either camo green or blue painted ones. Stealth lets you get away with using a heavier leader — greater strength and less chance of a breakoff allows you to put more pressure on the fish and a much better chance of bringing a true smoker kingfish to the gaff.

When kingfishing, I use a Shimano TLD 15 that is spooled up with 100# Power Pro Spectra, which has the diameter of 20# mono, in either Hi-Vis Yellow or white. These colors let you and everyone else see where your line is. I tie a 15’ section of 80# clear Izorline mono to the Power Pro with a modified “Tony Pena knot”. The leader’s swivel is connected to the mono with a uni-knot. The drag is set at 15# strike, this gives about 22# at full (a bunch on a casting rod). The rod I use (I have 5 of them, too — like the TLD15) is a 7’ Allstar Graphite, rated for 17 to 40# line from their Western Inshore Series. I use this basic combination in just about all my offshore fishing for kingfish, wahoo, amberjack, red snapper, dorado and ling. It’s virtually bullet-proof in these

FISHING SECTION | Pro Advice, Techniques, Equipment and Recipes position, I wait for the pickup, then point the rod tip directly at the line’s entry into the water. When the line comes tight, the vast majority of the time, the hook is set and the fight is on.

A “ big fish saving” tactic to consider using which could save the day is to “bow” to strong surges against high drag pressures by quickly pointing your rod tip at the pull—the line’s entry into the water. This reduces the drag pressure at the hook quickly without touching the drag lever.

While Power Pro Spectra gives you a better feel for what’s happening with your bait and faster/surer hooksets, mono works, too; hooksets just come a bit slower after the mono does its stretching exercise. They both work, it’s just a matter of personal preference — mine happens to be Power Pro Spectra.

Add the Kingfish Easy Hooking Rig to that list. Its hook type, the hook positioning in the baitfish and eliminating the “countdown” to the hookset all working in unison will put fish on the deck. Remember—there’s always another way, you just have to look for it.

To paraphrase a Nikon Camera TV commercial, “Does the technique matter? —Only if the fish matters”. Using the Kingfish Easy Hooking Rig, plus some of the other items mentioned, could turn that short striker or bait spitter into a hookup and headed for the gaff and cooler. h ave learned over the years chasing wild boars at night in the dense woods to be prepared for just about anything, and this was one of those special nights that do not happen very often.

After hearing a boar fight in the distance and hiking towards the sound, I quickly realized it was over and retreated to a new clearing my nephew and I had setup and deployed a call. Within an hour of off and on grunting, the first boar came in the area looking for a fight but stayed behind cover. I watched his actions and knew it was just about over since he could not find another boar and would leave soon.

He was too close to grunt again because it might have spooked him as it was dead quiet that night. When I saw his eyes illuminated through cover with night vision equipment, the decision to take the shot was made.

Last time this happened, I had a rifle chambered in .300 blackout that has taken many large rooters, but were clean, open head shots, not through heavy brush.

I decided it would not be a great shot and eventually it backed out and left that particular night.

This encounter, I had my trusty Benelli R1 chambered in a larger 30-06 round and with a NiteSite Eagle night

I heard that heavy body fall then decided to let him expire while I turned the call on once again. Although I made a perfect and ethical quick kill shot to the head, it is never a good idea to run up on a large boar until it completely stops moving to avoid getting charged.

Less than an hour later, a bigger boar came up behind the same thick cover and went to pushing on the dead boar wanting to fight! It was hilarious watching this live through the night vision monocular because he was really getting upset the other boar was asleep and he wanted to scrap. When he turned to walk away, I made a short throat grunt to get his attention for a split second and when I saw the outline of his head lower down to look through the brush, his eyes lit up and I let the second round of the night fly, ROOTER #2 DOWN! The first one weighed 182lbs and the second was 255lbs. They were both heavily scarred from years of fighting and were mature boars. This was a night to remember and I get a chuckle every time I watch that video. Good luck hunting my friends and stay safe in the woods.

Colorado History and Treats Comes to the Island

alveston attracts yearly “snowbirds”, who are the people from Northern states and colder climates that come to the island for a mild Winter. Now, Galveston is bringing a taste of the high country and a well-known and beloved stop in the Rocky Mountains, to the island for all to enjoy.

Colorado Cherry Company is a four-generation family owned and operated business that has evolved from a roadside stand of cherries and berries to several storefronts, and now Cherries by the Sea is home to the Galveston location. Ironically, the family bringing these treats to the island is the same family that offers the only escape rooms on the island, Escape the Island Escape Rooms. When they escape the island for a family getaway, they often visit their vacation home in Colorado. Over the years, they have watched the Colorado Cherry Company grow and thrive and enjoy every product they offer.

“We bring the products back for our friends and family here but now we can offer it to everyone,” says Allison Little. The Lyons, Colorado location of the Colorado Cherry Company has a full-service restaurant and bakery. They even have a location in the historic Stanley Hotel, made famous by the movie, The Shining.

Made famous by the Lenherts family and a cherry pie that Grandma Lehnert perfected long ago, Cherries are only the beginning. Butters, mixes, pickled produce along with salsas and chocolate delectables, Cherries by the Sea will carry all the Colorado Cherry Companies products, minus the fresh baked pies. Also, an island first, the shop will specialize in vinyl for crafters. No need to leave the island for the vinyl used in Cricut and Silhouette crafts. Cherries by the Sea has a full line of Vinyl and HTV colors. “We will continue to grow the vinyl side of the business and can’t wait to meet all of the local crafters, so they can let us know what they need. We will order it and sell it, as we learn about more of their needs and wants,” said Allison and Pat Little.

In the future, the shop will carry seasonal gifts, trinkets, and other items along with special order gift baskets. Located in the same building, next to the Escape the Island Escape Rooms at 910 21st Street, Cherries by the Sea is a great stop on your way to downtown Galveston, offering free parking in walking distance to the beginning of the Strand district.

that the prognosis was likely not in her favor. It would be a weekend of love, music to soothe her and anything they could possibly do to make, what would likely be, her last hours, as comfortable as was feasible. That little, precious dog made it through the weekend and was already showing a special bond with the Livingstons, and especially with Cindi who just had a way of ever so slightly stroking the dog and letting her know she was loved without causing her further pain.

T

his month the Featured Downtowner is more of a featured Galvestonian, of the best kind. Precious aka ¨Precious the Dumpster Dog¨ is known around the world, as one of the most remarkable survivor stories that happened to align with the recent Covid 19 quarantine.

As people were at home, online and looking to reach out to others, more than ever, many people came across the story of a small white chihuahua found behind a dumpster in Galveston. ¨I swear I thought it was a wadded-up rag when I looked back there, ¨ said Spider Livingston, as he retold the story of finding his new family member. A few people knew of a dog that had been laying behind a dumpster, in their apartment complex, and perhaps thought the dog had already passed, but when Spider found out, he jumped behind the dumpster, scooped up the female chihuahua and immediately went into action.

Having been, obviously, beaten, her head was crushed, puncture wounds were across her body and she had a displaced jaw. Spider could tell from the way she lay that she had probably been thrown in the dumpster and instead landed behind it. Some of the first locals and businesses to help with her rescue were Galveston Veterinary Clinic on 61st. They took her that night, only to find that her stomach was full of concrete pieces she had ingested, her body and brain injuries were possibly too intense to repair without a harmful amount of sedatives, being that she was so weak.

When Spider informed the veterinarian’s office that he was ready to sell one of his nine Harley Davidsons motorcycles to cover the medical bills, they knew he was serious and this would be the beginning of a pandemic, lockdown daily check in from across the world, as people started following Precious the Dumpster Dog´s journey to a new life. Galvestonians will always find a way to overcome and pull others up for the win and this spread across Europe, New Zealand, Florida to California to numerous other states and countries.

Precious now shares a home with Max, a Blue Pit Bull, who was rescued from over breeding circumstances and even saved by Spider once when he gave Max mouth to mouth after a near drowning.

Dude is a Brindle Pit Bull that loves his new family member, along with Tiny Hiney who has become just as famous as she joins Precious in her videos and in the arms of their momma Cindi. Watching over the family is a boisterous and sometimes loud wild grackle bird named Lil Bastard and Charlie who flies in for a feed each day. Both of these birds were rescued by Spider when he scooped up their injured bodies from the road and rode them home on his Harley.

As of about a month ago a tiny kitten named Happy has also joined the crew, after someone threw the kitten out a moving car window in front of Spider and his friends riding down Seawall. Luckily, it was Spider and he just scooped the kitten up and took it home. ¨I am the one that brings them home but my peahen (Cindi) she is the one that saves them. She is the one,” said Spider.

With all of these family members and having lived on the island for over 30 years, the Livingstons have survived storms, hurricanes, and other trials along the way but they are devoted to making life better for these animals and are more than appreciative of how the island has stepped up, so being featured this month, gives them an opportunity to highlight some of their favorites and share with the visitors to the island who always want to know, ¨Where do the locals go?¨ Cindi and Spider answered with, ¨We really don´t go out a lot but when we do, we like to ride the Seawall and through the strand on our Harley equipped with a large chair for Cindi and the small dogs to ride on.¨ Spider also does his own Facebook live shows where he highlights

Galveston Veterinary Clinic, 2108 61st Street- Pet products, of which they have not needed many because of so many generous donations and this is the vet that continues to save Precious. She has already had surgeries to fix her jaw, and other injuries but has more ahead of her.

Golden Corral, 6200 Seawall- ¨They have really stepped up their game with safety and we enjoy visiting the now cafeteria style way of eating. You still get all you want but there are not people and kids all over the food, unattended. ¨ Of course, the beaches are perfect for a walk with the dogs.

61st street fishing pier- ¨This has always been my favorite place to fish. ¨ Spider is also known for shark fishing from his kayak.

Galveston Go Karts and Fun Center, 9402 Seawall- ¨They have some great

stuff to do outside and sometimes people do not realize it’s there. It’s a great place. ¨ Hairgirl Boutique and Salon, 2626 Market Street- ¨She has a neat set up with lots of products and stuff to buy in the boutique.¨ They have opened up a whole new world of beard care for Spider and he will be a walking billboard for what they can do to care for a beard.

ello and Happy July! Let the fireworks begin! This month Bunny has two recipes. One is a dip that a good friend makes. It’s Stouty’s Summer Dip. You can’t go a summer without making this. The second is one of Mr. Bunny’s recipes. It’s smoked pulled pork. Can’t have a summer without that either.

Stouty’s Dip

Ingredients • 1 chopped green pepper • 1 chopped medium Vidalia, 1015, or whatever sweet onion you can find • 1 chopped cucumber • 3 chopped small tomatoes (I buy cherry tomatoes and quarter) • 2 8 ounce packages of cream cheese (room temperature) • Salt the tomatoes, cucumbers and onions to bring out the juices.

Directions Squish all together (his words) and let sit for a couple of hours to blend. Serve with Triscuits. (I try to find the cracked black pepper ones, but if you can’t find them, then regular Triscuits are fine.

Directions Get your smoker to 250 degrees (keep it a constant heat).

Rub the shoulder roast heavily with spicy mustard and generously sprinkle with the seasoning. Smoke with steady heat for 3 or so hours. Wrap with foil and put back on the smoker. Cook for another 2 hours or until the temperature gauge has an internal heat register of 200 degrees. Take off and shred the meat with two forks. Coat lightly with barbeque sauce.

Let rest for an hour. Serve the pork on the buns/rolls, and spoon the slaw on the sandwich, or on the side. Add a sliced onion on the sandwich if desired.

(Note from Bunny - Make a pot of pinto beans for a great side dish).

Well, there it is folks. I guarantee no one will go home hungry with all this grub.

Ingredients • 4-5-pound pork shoulder roast (do not use a pork butt, it is to fatty and greasy) • Saltgrass seasoning mix (you can buy this at any Saltgrass restaurant, or Amazon) • Spicy Mustard • Heads Barbeque Sauce • Hamburger buns, Kaiser or onion rolls, toasted • Crispy coleslaw • Sliced onions (optional)

During the COVID-19 quarantine, all her husband wanted to do was lay on the couch and do nothing but watch TV, while Frances wanted him to do things around the house.

Jasmine - Okay, if it were my man, I’d just flat out march over to the couch, grab the remote, and throw it in the back yard. I’d tell him to get off of his lazy butt and do something! Good grief, just going for a walk around the block is better than just laying around all day.

He refused to perform any household chores, including installing four new ceiling fans that had been stored in their garage for quite some time. Frances had enough of her lazy husband and hired a professional company to come to their house and do the installation. Her husband blew up at her over this and scolded her repeatably for “wasteful spending.”

Carlo - All right Frances, are you doing any chores? Are you pulling weeds in the yard, painting your living room, cleaning out the closets, or are you just glaring at your husband and boiling about things? Just asking.

Spring Cleaning

T

he Ronald McDonald House of Galveston continues to serve as a refuge for families of those hospitalized and critically ill children who cannot safely return to their homes during this coronavirus pandemic.

Fortunately, there are only a few but the staff has devoted their time and energy maintaining our “home away from home” for these extended family members. Local volunteers have brought cooked and prepared meals for everyone…calling ahead and leaving the provisions on the doorsteps. Our blessings remain, continue and carry on! Thank you to you all!

The staff is using this opportunity to “spring” clean and re-sanitize the House from the top to the basement and garage areas. When the children return, they will be greeted by fresh and sparkle…hopefully that will be soon.

What can we do to help?

If your home already cleaned and is fresh and sparkly, you may have extra cleaning supplies. If so, we can use them!

eflections Is Life Really Worth Living?

If

I’m but a speck of dust, a grain of sand, or blink in time, does my life really matter? Is life really worth living?

Say we are here for just a short time, say 75 plus years, we work hard for 30-40 years, raise a family, have grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After we live a full life and pass away, we are only a memory to our immediate family and very few friends. We all pass away; memories will fade, and our works will be replaced by others. So, again, is life really worth living?

Ask yourself is life worth that first kiss, your first date, your first home run or touchdown? Is it worth getting married to the person of your dreams, the one you pledge to love and honor for better or worse, richer or poor, sickness and health to death till you part? Is it worth going through a pregnancy, worrying about bringing life into a chaotic world, feeling the pain and joy of childbirth?

Is it worth seeing a big, burly grown man turn to mush when he holds his newborn baby girl for the first? How about playing catch or taking your son (or daughter) fishing for the first time? Is life worth figuring out how to raise a family, not knowing what the result will be?

Is life worth living knowing that you will experience extreme happiness and sadness during your life? Is it worth the pain of losing a mother, father, brother sister, son, or daughter?

Oh, the pain! At the same time knowing you will deal with loss, is it worth living knowing that you had a lifetime with your parents that have given you love throughout your life,

even though time has taken away your vitality and spunk and replaced it with pain and senility. Or the love and memories passed down to the children and grandchildren, even though they too will be lost in time. Is life worth becoming a grandparent and giving unconditional love to another person in your family lineage?

Is life worth living knowing that you will make mistakes that affect others, sometimes negatively? Is it worth knowing that your job could affect lives and generations to come, for example being a teacher, first responder, military service, or in the medical field?

Is it worth living with life’s aggravations dealing with people who will treat you poorly because of your religion, your profession, or your socioeconomic status? Is it worth defending your values and morals when everyone and everything around you seems to be devalued to only “what’s in it for me” mentality? Is it worth living knowing that your kindness and charity may have helped someone who was struggling, or teaching a child that there is good in the world and if you learn to persevere and overcome, then no one can take away you accomplishments, even if they revile you for your faith and hard work?

I can only speak for myself, as I sit and contemplate is “life worth living”? I think I know what my answer is today, but I’ll keep it to myself, for no one knows what tomorrow will bring. Maybe tomorrow our answer will change, or we finally come to terms that life is a fleeting moment in time, is it really worth living...who knows? Only you can answer that question.
