QUICK FACTS

Our name

Rockbridge County is named for the Natural Bridge of Virginia, located in the southern part of the county. The county was created in 1777, split off from Augusta County to the north. Lexington was established as the county seat. Lexington became an independent city in 1965. Buena Vista was chartered a city in 1892 following a dramatic growth in population fueled by a speculative boom in the western part of Virginia.

EDUCATION

Two Workforce Education Projects

Add To Area’s

Appeal For Employers

Two extensive renovation projects that will propel workforce education ahead for years to come are coming to fruition this year. The completion of the Wilson Workforce Development Center in downtown Buena Vista and the Rockbridge Innovation Center at Rockbridge County High School gives the Rockbridge area two state-of-the-art technical education and training facilities. The Innovation Center serves high school-age students and the Wilson Workforce Center will offer classes and training to post-high school students and people seeking new skills or a change in career.

The Wilson Workforce Development Center, which will provide training for various manufacturing trades, is named for Buena Vista native Joe Wilson, who made purchase of the former Courtesy Ford dealership building possible. Wilson is a successful businessman and graduate of Parry McCluer High School and Virginia Military Institute known for his philanthropic ventures, including support for the Virginia Community College System.

The manufacturing training center, located in the 18,750-squarefoot building at 2019 Forest Ave., is intended to meet local employers’ existing and future workforce needs, as well as house an entrepreneurial innovation laboratory.

Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) received a $3 million Federal grant in October, 2022, to be matched with $750,000 in local funds. The entire project is expected to cost an estimated $5.3 million. MCGG expects the Center will create or retain 110 jobs and generate $2 million in private investment.

Among the heavy trades that will be taught at the center are heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical and plumbing, diesel mechanic, machine tool, welding, building trades and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL.) All of the training falls under the community college system’s Fast-Forward program, which offers tuition assistance for Virginia residents to train for in-demand jobs.

As work progressed on the Wilson Workforce Center building, the adjacent McCormick Building was also being renovated for use by MGCC. The two adjacent buildings “will almost have a campus feel to them,” said Dr. John Rainone, MGCC president, in an interview with The News-Gazette last fall.

“These two buildings will be connected. There will be landscaping, and some classrooms [within the two structures] will be interchangeable.”

MGCC hosted Business After Hours in the Wilson Workforce Center project in December 2024.
MGCC President John Rainone.

Last fall, MGCC announced that it would vacate its Vista Links Drive facility at the end of the 2024-25 academic year and move all classes to the McCormick Building. MGCC’s Buena Vista complex is expected to provide an economic boost to Buena Vista’s downtown, with students and faculty being within walking distance of restaurants and retail outlets in the downtown area. Projected enrollment for the first year at MGCC’s downtown facilities has been set at 200, with anticipated enrollment growing to between 400 and 500 by the third year, according to Rainone. Practical nursing, massage therapy, general studies and liberal arts are among the classes being taught at the Vista Links Drive center that will relocate downtown. The project is expected to be complete by summer 2025.

Meanwhile, just north of Lexington on the Rockbridge County High School campus, the fifty-year old Floyd S. Kay Vocational Center adjacent to the high school was also getting an extensive makeover, including changing the name to the Rockbridge Innovation Center.

When the Vocational Center opened in 1976, the idea for a high school vocational-tech facility in and of itself was “forward thinking.” In the mid-1960s, Rockbridge County schools were troubled by a large number of students dropping out of classes prematurely, according to the 1980 book “A Brief History of Public Education in Rockbridge County, Lexington, and Buena Vista.”

The superintendent at the time, Floyd S. Kay, oversaw the creation of a committee that addressed the growing concern, which eventually led to a resolution in 1965 that called for the creation of a centrally located vocational-technical center that could cater to all students’ needs rather than just those college-bound. It took eleven years to happen, but the Vo-Tech Center, as it was popularly known, served generations of area students.

Today’s technical education programming is known as Career and Technical Education or CTE. At the occasion of the Rockbridge County School Board’s vote to rename the facility in March 2023, Superintendent Phillip Thompson said, “We’re going through complete renovation all next year. When it’s all said and done at the end of next year and the beginning of the following school year, we should have a relatively brand new facility there — modern, upgraded — with all of the changes and the focus on CTE.”

Ground was broken on the expansion and renovation work in July, 2023. For 2023-24 school year, students made use of temporary structures and creative scheduling. “We have been able to work around, and outside we have some large tents that we heat, and we’ve not really had any issues at all with using them as flexible areas,” said Kurt Bennett, who taught building trades at Rockbridge and managed the renovation. “With the classroom time and the classroom instruction, they’ve built it into the schedule throughout the school, so they have their own area to where they can run their classrooms inside,” he said.

Teachers and administrators were able to turn to resources outside the school as well, using space at Mountain Gateway Community College for the culinary students, and taking others on field trips for additional hands-on experience.

In mid-November 2024, the County School Board and Board of Supervisors toured the nearly completed Center including the culinary arts facility, auto repair, the house building pavilion, nursing and medical training, and the drafting and architecture classroom. The project was completed on schedule and on budget, and reopened for classes at the beginning of the new semester in January 2025.

With these two major projects now coming online, the Rockbridge area can offer greater opportunities for training and technical education to students, and help employers by upgrading the skills and education of our local workforce.

RETIREMENT

Rockbridge offers choices in retirement living Private Home, Condo or Community:

Seniors in the Rockbridge area have a broad range of choices in how they approach retirement living. Both long-time residents and recent arrivals are faced with decisions on type of housing, and those choices can change as people age and their circumstances change.

Fortunately, the Rockbridge area offers a variety of options, ranging from traditional homes to retirement communities. Many homes built within the past 20 years or so incorporate accessibility features such as wider doors, bathrooms large enough for a wheelchair, walk-in showers and other amenities that make it easier for older people to age in place. Many older Americans favor living on one level. If you’re in the market for a home and consider it to be the place you hope to age in place, look for features that will facilitate that desire.

The National Institute on Aging offers tips on how a home can be modified to make it safe and convenient for seniors. www.nia. nih.gov/health/aging-place/aging-place-growing-older-home.

Such simple things as sufficient lighting at the top and bottom of stairs are important. If there are stairs in the home, make sure that there are adequate handrails, preferably on both sides of the stairs. Are there grab rails in the shower and/or tub. Sufficient outdoor lighting, with timers or sensors, makes arriving or leaving the house at night safer.

Building a new home or renovating an existing home are the perfect opportunities to make your residence suitable for aging in place. Local architects and builders can recommend features and assist in this process.

For those who would like to remain independent and in their own home, but not have the worry about maintenance of the exterior or the yard, a condominium or townhome may be a good transitional living arrangement. The Rockbridge area doesn’t have many of these but there are several developments such as Sixty West and Weatherburn. There are also condos in downtown Lexington in the Lyric and Sheridan buildings. The top floor of the Gin Hotel is also condominiums.

Downtown offers access to downtown shops, the library and restaurants. The colleges are within easy walking distance. Most have dedicated parking spaces, and some have elevators.

Another option is the retirement community. Kendal at Lexington, a Life Plan (CCRC) community, affiliated with one of twelve Kendal senior living communities located throughout the United States, has been instrumental in building on the existing community of active, engaged seniors here in Rockbridge.

Kendal’s model of continuing care means that new residents can start off in independent living - in apartments or detached cottages and, if needed, progress to assisted living, or nursing care in the Borden Center. Kendal residents pay an entry fee, to join the community, and then monthly fees that vary depending on the type of apartment or cottage they choose. One big service is meals in Kendal’s dining room. Housekeeping, maintenance and utilities are also included.

Above: Kendal at Lexington offers independent living in cottages and apartments. Opposite page, top left: Kendal’s newest neighborhood is the Sunset Ridge cottages. Top center: A Chamber First Fridays held recently at Kendal. Top right: The Sheridan Building in downtown Lexington has condominiums in the Lyric, on the far left, and above the shops to the center and right of the building.

Since opening in 2000 with Phase 1, consisting of 26 cottages, 40 apartments and 24 assisted living studios, Kendal has grown, adding the Borden Center in 2002 with skilled nursing. Two more phases have added more cottages and apartments (now a total of 95 cottages and 55 apartments), and a fitness center with swimming pool, exercise classroom and fitness equipment/ strength training room.

An expanded dining room was opened in 2021 to accommodate the larger population of residents. Most recently, the Borden Nursing Center and Webster Assisted living Center were enlarged and renovated to better facilitate a person-centered model of care. The Borden Center also serves members of the greater Rockbridge area community for those using Medicare, Medicaid, long-term care insurance, or private pay.

Locals that decide to stay in the area after retirement do so for a variety of reasons. For many, family ties, long-standing friendships and generational roots make moving away in retirement unthinkable. For others, it’s the same things that bring newcomers here — a safe, small-town atmosphere, with the added attraction of the cultural and intellectual stimulation provided by our colleges.

A WORLD-CLASS FACILITY

Many newcomer retirees, particularly from the northeast US, want a milder climate with shorter winters, but want a location with four distinct seasons.

Many of those who relocate here in retirement remain active physically and mentally. Some may hardly be considered retirees, having retired from direct employment but continuing to consult and do contract work on their own schedule.

Many retirees are active walkers, cyclists, tennis players or golfers. Many go regularly to the Y, take yoga classes or use the fitness center in their community. Many are active in civic organizations such as Rotary and Ruritan clubs. Retirees serve on the boards of local charities, and some have run for public office in the county and cities.

The experience here has been that retirees — both those who are long-time residents, and those who have retired here from other places — add greatly to the social fabric of Rockbridge.

Silicon Holler: Rockbridge is home to cutting edge tech

While it may not be the first place you’d think of when listing places where new technologies are being developed — or where existing technologies are being innovated — Rockbridge County has more than a few companies finding ways to enhance the lives of local residents and people throughout the country, from manufacturing energy efficient shelters for military and emergency operations to developing technology that can transmit data through the air with lasers.

Attochron

Tom Chaffee, founder and CEO of Attochron, first began coming across the idea of wireless telecommunication applications for lasers in 1997, during the height of the dot-com boom. During that era, dozens of companies were founded on the idea of taking the ‘fiber’ out of fiber optics.

“Everybody hears ‘fiber optics,’ but a lot of people don’t realize is that ‘optics’ means ‘laser,’” Chaffee said. “And the reason they went with laser in fiber instead of electricity is that a laser can carry way more information. The frequencies are much tighter.” None of the companies that tried to capitalize on what is called free-space optics were able to find success at the time — and all went out of business when the dot-com bubble burst in the early 2000s — but the reason had more to do with science than business practices.

“The light signal [of the laser] interferes with itself when it’s beaming through the air,” Chaffee said. “Basically, with fiber optics when they plug that laser in and send it from here to there they know it’s gonna be pristine the whole way. Nothing’s going to interfere with it unless somebody chops [the line]. But the air, even though we look through the air and can see fine… for a laser, it’s super sensitive.”

Air, he explained, has a refractive index that interferes with the type of laser used in fiber optics, resulting in peaking and dropping of the signal between the origin point and the end point of the laser. While the data does reach its target, it gets corrupted along the way.

“Weather can be a problem, but believe it or not, clear air — especially a partly sunny day — that will change the refractive index constantly,” Chaffee said. “A day that’s more overcast stabilizes the air. It doesn’t make it perfect, but it makes it better. … So there’s been this problem of keeping a quality signal in the air. That’s exactly what Attochron’s success revolves on.”

Chaffee founded Attochron in 2002 to commercialize the idea of using ultrashort pulse lasers (USPL) — instead of the continuous wave lasers used in fiber optics — for free-space optical communications and for most of the past 20-plus years, he has been working on developing the technology. The company was based in New Jersey for the first decade of its existence, but Chaffee relocated to Lexington after Hurricane Sandy in 2012 in order to spend more time with his father who had moved here in 2000.

Attochron’s work and research continued in its new home in the Blue Ridge Mountains. A big leap in the company’s efforts occurred within the past year as they partnered with Lumen Technologies and an unnamed fortune 200 retailer for a local proof of concept test. For three months were able to send data 1.5 miles to the retailer from the area next to a nearby cell tower. The company is now beginning a low-rate production of a hardware product called ALTIS-7, which can both transmit and receive data and hopes to have the first units out the door within the next few months.

Chaffee’s goal with his technology is not to see how far the data can be transmitted, but rather to get it where it needs to go, which more often than not is a mile or so from existing fiber optic lines. It can also serve as a backup source for data to fiber optic lines in the case of damage to the line interrupting the data flow.

BARC Connects: Bringing High-Speed Internet to Rural Communities

BARC Connects, the broadband subsidiary of BARC Electric Cooperative, is on a mission to deliver world-class fiber-optic internet to rural Virginia.

Reliable internet access is more essential than ever, and BARC Connects has been working tirelessly to bridge the digital divide across its five-county service area, including Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Highland, and Rockbridge.

The company began researching fiber-optic internet solutions in 2017 and launched full-scale infrastructure construction in 2018. Since then, they’ve made remarkable progress, installing nearly 1,500 miles of fiber lines — comprising of approximately 990 miles of aerial mainline, 225 miles of underground lines, and over 170 miles of both aerial and underground drops.

Top: BARC provides fiber broadband service to residential and commercial customers across multiple counties and cities in western Virginia.

Billy Reid, BARC’s Director of Broadband, emphasized that improving the quality of life in the communities they serve is their core mission. The demand for high-speed internet surged after COVID, with so many people working and learning from home. Broadband has become essential for remote work, education, and telehealth services, especially in rural areas. BARC Connects caters to both residential and commercial customers, customizing installations to meet different needs. While residential setups typically involve single dwellings with lower bandwidth requirements, commercial installations are often more complex, requiring higher-speed bandwidth for video conferencing, cloud storage, and large file transfers.

Depending on the layout of a business, fiber installation can involve running cables through conduits, ceilings, crawl spaces, trenching, or aerial connections. Bringing fiber-optic internet to rural areas comes with challenges, especially in regions with difficult terrain like Rockbridge County.

To tackle these obstacles, BARC Connects has secured grant funding to expand its services. Recent funding awards include the Community Connect Grant, which will expand service to approximately 380 members in the Collierstown area, and the Virginia Telecommunications Initiative Grant, which will extend fiber coverage to Buffalo Creek, Spring Valley, and areas north of Route 60 between Lexington and Buena Vista (Conrock North and Conrock South).

Some areas are harder to reach than others due to the terrain, making grant funding crucial. Despite these challenges, fiber installation in Rockbridge and Bath Counties has progressed smoothly. To maximize broadband access, BARC Connects collaborates with other local organizations, including the Rockbridge Area Network Authority (RANA), to ensure fiber reaches communities beyond BARC’s service lines. These partnerships help further the goal of providing fast, reliable internet to as many residents and businesses as possible.

With a strong commitment to innovation and service, BARC Connects is playing a vital role in transforming the digital landscape of rural Virginia — one fiber connection at a time.

Bridging the Digital Divide:

How Virginia Technology Services

is connecting Rockbridge Co.

Virginia Technology Services was founded in 2018 when Dusan Janjic and Jeff Pufahl, two local business owners working on different sides of computer technology, joined forces. Janjic ran a company called Rockbridge Global Village, and was one of the first companies in the area to offer dial-up internet in 1997. He was also among the first to introduce Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) internet to the area. Pufahl had a company called the Computer Doctor and focused on doing computer repairs, as well as installing networks for homes and businesses.

“He does so much more than internet and I do so much more than computer repair, we joined forces and created Virginia Technology Services,” Pufahl said.

A big part of what Virginia Technology Services does is work to get internet to customers, though that’s not always easy in Rockbridge County.

“One of the biggest challenges is the terrain and the lack of infrastructure, but that’s changing quite rapidly,” he said. “We’ve had a lot of government money available for companies to expand internet – specifically fiber internet – to new locations and that money has come now into Rockbridge County over the past few years. Because of the topography of this area, that’s been one of the largest challenges, trying to get internet to some of these remote locations, but it’s the remote locations that draw people in. It’s what drew me in.”

One of the ways that Virginia Technology Services is working to expand internet access within the county is by installing towers in places that can serve as a relay point to a different area. They’re also sending internet wirelessly into some areas of the county where running a physical fiber line is cost-prohibitive.

“We’ve done some pretty creative things in terms of trying to deliver internet to some remote locations,” he said. “We’re able to bring internet to the local community whereas otherwise internet wouldn’t be available.”

They also offer similar services on a smaller scale, setting up bridges between different buildings on the same network, something Pufahl noted began happening more and more as people began working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Farmers are among those who have begun running internet to different out-buildings and have begun using the internet and other technologies as part of running the farm. “They monitor their farms now more with technology,” Pufahl said. “Not only [with] cameras, but down to how much milk a cow yields to egg production… It’s amazing how much technology has moving into farming.”

Top: Dusan Janjic (l) and Jeff Pufahl (r) merged their two companies to form Virginia Technology Services. Left and above: VTS installs security cameras, alarm systems and secure email hosting.

Pufahl and his team still offer repairs on computers and their other services, both in their office on Crossing Lane outside of Lexington and by making house calls. They also offer a wide array of services from smart device installation, secure email hosting, security cameras, alarm systems and cloud integration. They also offer cyber security services and work to educate people on how to be aware of cyber security threats.

“Because of technology, the bad people are becoming more and more creative, and we tell our customers the best way to prevent bad things from happening is not to overreact, but to be vigilant and be protected,” he said. “Human error is the thing that really allows bad things to happen, opening up that email and such.”

Rapid, Resilient,

Ready: How UTS Systems is revolutionizing deployment shelters

UTS Systems in Fairfield manufactures an array of shelters utilized in various expeditionary capacities, including operations by the U.S. Military. They can be utilized for medical services, operational command centers, base camp and billeting, and nearly all of their shelters can be deployed in 20 minutes or less. They also manufacture small shelters that can be attached to vehicles for more rapid deployment.

“When we have to conduct operations in austere environments, we’re able to get the facility up fast, we’re able to power it, we’re able to cool it, we’re able to heat it and then we focus on what other things inside the structure we manufacture to help conduct operations,” said Mike Stolarz, vice-president of business development for UTS.

UTS’s shelters utilize new fabrics and technology to protect what they refer to as the “signature of the shelter” by covering or reducing its thermal and RF signatures.

“When you think of lessons learned in Ukraine right now, the bad guys could see you with drones,” Stolarz explained. “So how do we mask and protect that operation center from those kind of assets? Those are the kind of the things we’re really focused on.”

The manufacturing of these shelters largely takes place at the Fairfield facility, with workers performing a variety of tasks to produce the fabric for the shelter, from welding fabrics together to sewing different types of materials.

“Sewing might seem very simple and

laymen, but it’s not,” Stolarz said. “These are high-tech fabrics and this stuff can’t fail, so our practices [and] our quality initiatives are very strong. This stuff goes out to war fighters so it’s got to work.”

The company also has a metal fabrication facility in Florida — whose operations will soon be moving to Rockbridge County — and a facility in Ohio which produces support technology for the facilities, including air conditioning and heating units and portable generators.

UTS is also producing shelters that are energy efficient by including a “thermal fly” for the shelters — a separate covering that goes over the shelter with a solid top to reflect most of the heat and mesh sides to create air gaps with allow for air flow, which keep the shelters cool in hot areas. For shelters deployed in colder climates,

UTS Systems mobile shelters are in use by military and humanitarian groups around the world.

the shelters include an insulated lining. These additions help reduce the number of heaters and air conditioners needed to keep the interior at a stable temperature.

“Instead of two air conditioners, I only need one now because the tent is so efficient relative to its design,” Stolarz said. “The insulated liners we put in the shelters allow that unit to have one small heater instead of three big ones. That’s a big push for us as well.”

Built to last: How local family businesses defy the odds

Small businesses are the backbone of the American economy, and the Rockbridge area is certainly no exception. As in every community, businesses open and close — there is constant turnover. But, there are businesses here that have thrived for generations.

We have businesses that have been in the same family for six generations, going back to before the Civil War. There are local businesses with four generations of family ownership and other local businesses in their second generation.

Multi-generational family businesses are not that common, though. There is research that would suggest that two-thirds of family businesses don’t progress to a second generation and that very few survive to the third.

lifestyle, while paying less attention to the business. The third generation, having grown up more affluent, without the role model of the founder, often oversees the decline of the business, and concurrently, the source of an affluent lifestyle.

Family businesses have certain advantages, though, over more corporate enterprises. They can be more nimble in responding to change and adversity. There may be family wealth that has accrued though years of prudent management, which can be a source of capital for the business when other sources are unavailable or expensive. Family owners and successors often have a deep sense of responsibility to insure the survival of the business. This can be a great source of strength, but also a source of stress and mental anguish when the business is challenged.

All small businesses face the challenges of competition, changing technologies and markets, and the ups and downs of economic cycles. But family businesses have other challenges in addition. Family business leaders sometimes feel they have to have to make choices that are dictated as much by family dynamics as by the needs of the business. These kinds of dilemmas become more frequent with succeeding generations, especially if there is a mix of family member owners active in the business and other owners who are not active in management. Keeping business and personal issues separate seems to be one key to successful multi-generational businesses.

There is also the phenomenon known colloquially as, “Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations.” This refers to the progression from the business founder who often sacrifices time and personal income to grow the business and make it successful. The second generation then takes over a thriving business, and often is tempted to reap the profits and live a more affluent

Multi-generation family businesses often have rich veins of family stories about the business, its owners. and employees. Fires, floods, robberies, and other catastrophes often figure in this lore, but also windfalls and serendipitous events. Many stories also involve eccentric or remarkable characters in the family. All of this adds to the bonds that so many families have with the business.

Certain segments of the economy seem to have had more multi-generation businesses than others. Farming has always been a multi-generational enterprise. Automobile dealerships are one example, though there has been consolidation. Some multi-generation dealers didn’t survive the Great Recession of 2008-2010, and the manufacturers, particularly General Motors, also contracted the number of dealerships. Many local newspapers spanned generations of owner/ publishers until most sold to ever-growing media companies, starting in the 1970s and 80s. Service businesses, such as insurance and real estate brokerage, also are a market segment with multi-generational owners.

We have two local examples profiled here.

The local businesses profiled here are defying the odds and prospering. These businesses have successfully navigated the chasm of generational succession. Merely by existing for many years, through recession and expansion, they, and other local multigeneration businesses are remarkable.

Besides the local businesses profiled here, other local businesses that are multigenerational include, but are not limited to:

Clark Electric

Family, Technical Expertise and Valued Customers Made Clark Electric Successful

Clark Electric grew out of a family need. In 1990, founder Eddie Clark needed to pick up his daughters from school every day. Family has been interwoven into the business, beginning with a niece and nephew involved from the early days.

Today, Eddie and Jean Clark’s daughter Caitlin is an officer in the company and her husband, Dusty Maxwell, has taken over the day-to-day operations in the field, with Eddie still managing the business side. Dusty has worked with Eddie for over 21 years.

In the 35 years that the business have been in operation, everything has changed — and everything has stayed the same. Clark Electric has been involved in some of the most sophisticated residential projects in and outside of Rockbridge County. Eddie had a strong background in commercial and industrial construction when he started the business and it’s been a pleasure to work on some of the growing businesses including Devils Backbone Brewing and Outpost, W.R. Deacon Timber Inc., Southern Virginia University, House Mountain Inn, Young Life Rockbridge Alum Springs are just a few.

If you think of developing human capital as success, Clark Electric has provided the foundation for many folks exploring the electrical and construction businesses. Former employees are leading in their fields at BARC, VMI, Munters, Nielsen and a few that have started their own businesses. Dusty is a good, patient teacher who is happy to mentor young people exploring the trade. He has also worked with the RCHS CTE program and Robyn Sherman to bring more folks into the field.

By focusing on technology, sustainability and customer relations, Clark Electric is positioning itself for the future. Eddie and Dusty have been learning and working with clients on smart home integration, EV charging stations, and home energy storage solutions. Many homes and businesses in our area have aging electrical systems and they have a lot of experience in updating, upgrading, rewiring, and replacing whole systems or just components. Likewise, they’ve developed some niche capabilities in industrial system design over the years, and they’re eager to continue growing that business as well.

Speaking of the future, succession planning is an issue for most every family business. Clark Electric has worked with a core group of contractors throughout the decades and some of them, just like Eddie, are looking at semi-retirement. They would like to engage with some of the new businesses in the Rockbridge area to form relationships and partnerships.

Eddie said, “Most importantly, we’ve been fortunate to develop good partnerships with great contractors over the years and we look forward to continuing to work well with new and old friends in the building trades.  We love this community and we hope to be working in it and for it for years to come.”

Shaner’s Greenhouses

Very few businesses can say they have been around since 1843, and few still have been in the same family for all that time.

Shaner’s Greenhouses may not just be the oldest business in the area still owned by the same family, but possibly the oldest family business in the state still operating at its original location.

Now in its sixth generation, owners Mitchell and Laura Shaner have been in the business for 45 years. Anne McClung’s book, “Dried Apples and Other Vanishing Memories of Rockbridge County” has a chapter with an interview with Mitchell’s father, Joe C. “Pete” Shaner, Jr., who said that his great-great grandfather, George Bare Shaner moved to Rockbridge from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and started a business selling vegetables to VMI.

The business evolved from cutting ice and truck gardening along the Maury River, to growing vegetables and cut flowers. Flowers were shipped around the state, starting in the 1930s and into the early 2000s. Mitchell’s father, Pete Shaner, in Anne McClung’s interview, recalled selling dozens of large chrysanthemums to be made into corsages that young college men would give to their dates for football games.

Bedding and potted plants have also been a staple of the greenhouses. In the 1940s and 50s, the Shaners operated a flower shop on Washington Street.

Other ventures have included raising beef cattle. Today, the business is more seasonal with an emphasis on spring annuals, vegetables and herbs.

The Shaners have also actively developed much of the land that the family held along Maury River Road and Greenhouse Road.

Laura Shaner noted. “For any small farm or family business to succeed first and foremost you must thank the many loyal customers and employees over the years. Secondly, good succession or estate planning is needed. Thirdly, an overriding sense of stewardship is important. Challenges come and go, things change and evolve, but new opportunities are around the corner. “

Mitchell and Laura’s sons Jackson and Gabe Shaner are working in Charleston, SC now in a landscaping business, but plan to come back to the area, and would become the seventh generation of Shaners in the business. With their acquired skills in landscaping and hardscaping, that could be a new avenue for the business.

Laura Shaner noted, when talking about the longevity of the business, that each generation has to adapt the business to the needs and the economy of the times. The Shaner family has shown itself to be excellent examples of this over the generations.

Huffman Insurance

Local service has helped Huffman Insurance Agencies thrive

Insuring the property and lives of Rockbridge area families and businesses has been the focus of Huffman Insurance Agencies for over 50 years, and two generations.

Current owner Ward Huffman’s parents, Bolivar and Hazel Huffman started the business in 1968. The agency was first located in the back room of Hazel’s business, the Knit- Knac Shop in downtown Lexington. The Knit- Knac Shop was one of the first woman-owned businesses in Lexington. As the insurance business grew, it took over the rest of the shop space and Hazel closed her shop. At one time it was truly a family business with Bolivar, Hazel, Ward and his brother Stan all working in the office.

The agency has grown over the years, expanding into new communities. Ward said in a recent interview, “We acquired Chittum Insurance in 2000 and the McCormick Agency in Buena Vista in 2001. We took over two agencies in Staunton in 2016 and one in Bath County and one in Alleghany County in 2018. In 2020 we went from just representing Nationwide and a few other companies to representing many different companies and becoming a true independent agency.”

Over 57 years the agency has evolved with the times. It has continued to grow and add staff. Technology and carriers have changed over the years, and the Huffmans have learned to adapt to new ideas and ways of doing business. They are proud to have made the business into one of the top insurance agencies in the Valley while maintaining that family-owned business feel.

Ward said, “Like any business, there are always challenges. When you are a second generation business, it’s a challenge to be able to establish your own identity as well as maintain the goodwill created by your parents.”

“Insurance is always changing especially post-Covid when everything went crazy. Rates have been increasing over the past few years and that’s a challenge. You want to be able to provide the best coverages to your customers but still be mindful of the cost.”

“In recent years carriers have tightened their underwriting rules, and the cost of repairs has skyrocketed. The insurance industry has driven this need to save money versus having the right coverages with all their continuous commercials touting savings. It’s been a challenge to convince people that cheaper is not always better but the right coverage for the right value is important.”

When asked why they though their business has survived for over half a century, the Huffmans said, “We care about our customers and our community. To us, every customer is important, and we try to treat each one as though they are our only customer and be an advocate for them. We try not to be an 800 number or internet company, and we strongly believe that the phrase “shop local” is one, that in a small community such as ours, we must live by. To that end, we are very involved in the community and try to give back as much as we can.”

Ward has been in the business for 38 years, and Whitney for 28 years. When asked about a third generation in the business, they said that their children have taken different paths, but that they plan to stay in the business for many more years.

“Our outlook for the future is very strong. We plan to continue to grow and help our customers. We feel blessed that we are fortunate enough to live and work where we do, and feel it is essential to serve our communities however we can.”

That’s a recipe for success in any business.

James Wm. Moore Real Estate Co.

Rooted in community, driven by excellence in Real Estate

When your family has been a part of the Rockbridge area since before there was even a Rockbridge County, you have a deep appreciation for the land and the area’s history. Will Moore’s ancestors settled here before 1750, and the family has been here ever since.

James Wm. Moore Real Estate Co. was founded in 1988, with a passion for our naturally and historically rich corner of Virginia. The firm is well into its second generation of ownership. Founder Jim Moore has been in the real estate business for over 50 years.

Will Moore, Jim’s son, is a graduate of Washington and Lee University, and now serves as Principal Broker and President following the leadership of his father. Will has been involved in an official capacity for 11 years, and unofficially for 26 years before that. Will’s mother, Jeri, was an agent with the company for many years as well.

Will said,”Every successful transaction for a client is a success story for us. We have been fortunate to work with amazing clients and properties. This experience includes successfully marketing some of the highest quality land, commercial, and residential properties in the Shenandoah Valley and western mountains of Virginia.”

Significant transactions include: the sale of the 600-plus acre Cascades Farm (the first farm in Rockbridge County to ever sell for over $1 million); the sale of historic Rockbridge Alum Springs; the sale of historic Greyledge Farm in Botetourt County; the sale of historic Forest Oaks; and successfully selling many of Lexington’s most important historic properties including over 100,000 square feet of commercial space in downtown Lexington.

The family realizes that change is constant in every business. Will said, “We have adapted to changing markets and industry trends through our involvement in our REALTOR professional associations on the local, state, and national levels. Our agents pursue the highest levels of professional development opportunities to serve our clients’ best interests.”

Will credits their exceptional clients and the unmatched capabilities of the high quality professionals in the office. “We are fortunate to be surrounded by such great people! We also have a passion for this area, which motivates us all to deliver the best service possible.”

He is optimistic about the future, and believes that the longevity of the business is due to the deep experience of multiple generations and in having a long term outlook. That grounding gives him confidence that they can handle whatever comes next.

Will acknowledges that it can be challenging to balance family and professional matters, but works to make time for those important family moments outside of the business.

He says that there is a possible third generation Moore family member who could get into the business sometime in the future, but at 2 years old, he is focused more on taking steps than stepping in. “We all look forward to watching him and supporting him as he follows his passions.”

The Rockbridge Vibe:

People, Places and Institutions Define The

Area Love IT

There a certain vibe to Rockbridge — something that make the Rockbridge area distinctive from other communities, even in surrounding counties. There are both tangible and intangible manifestations of Rockbridge’s vibe all around us.

The natural beauty of this area makes an immediate impression on many first-timers to the Rockbridge area. The mountains, ever changing with the seasons and even the weather, form a backdrop to the rolling hills of the valley. People driving south on I-81 see the panorama of the valley spreading out in front of them, with the Blue Ridge Mountains on the left, the Alleghenies on the right and House Mountain in the distance. The farms, fields, woods and streams one sees driving the country roads of this county are views that few tire of.

Vibe: (noun) the atmosphere of a place as communicated to and felt by others.

Our towns and villages are also things that people are taken with. Lexington, Buena Vista, Fairfield, Brownsburg, Rockbridge Baths and Glasgow have their own charm, with 18th, 19th and early 20th century buildings, many of which are home to interesting shops.

The climate here is an attraction to many. The Rockbridge area has four distinct seasons. Our springs and autumns are long, and our winters and summers are not too extreme. Locals joke that when you’re getting tired of one season, it’s about time for the next.

The colleges, Washington and Lee University, Southern Virginia University, Mountain Gateway Community College and Virginia Military Institute, provide economic stability to our area, and contribute greatly to the quality of life here and to the area’s vibe. Concerts, nationally and internationally recognized speakers, sports events, and access to university libraries are just some of the positives that our colleges bring to our area. Having roughly 4,000 young people among us helps keep us all feeling younger, too.

Above left: The Young Men’s Camp of Charleston West Virginia Stake — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, spruced up Penny Park in Buena Vista last summer. Center: Special events by local businesses contribute to the fabric of our communities. Right: Washington and Lee University students enjoy an impromptu game on the campus.

Vibe , continued from page 29

Natives and long-time residents recognize the ebb and flow of the pace of life in our communities, which pulse with our colleges. Summers are times of less traffic and a bit slower pace. Come August, and things pick up as a new crop of young people arrive in Lexington and Buena Vista.

Local volunteer and civic groups add immeasurably to the quality of life in the Rockbridge area. From relief programs, to the summer Friday night concerts in Lexington and Buena Vista, to the Rockbridge Community Festival, and a myriad of other events and programs, Rockbridge area residents are involved in the community. Our area has over 160 non-profit organizations. That is an amazing number for a community the size of ours. Even our older citizens get involved. Residents at Kendal at Lexington sit on many local boards and serve in a variety of capacities in local organizations.

And, it’s not just retirees that are involved in our community. Young people here are serving on boards and in other volunteer capacities. Lime Kiln Theater was revived by a group of young people led by Spencer McElroy several years ago. The board of Hull’s Drive-in, our local non-profit outdoor movie theatre, has a diversity of ages and stages serving.

These characteristics of the Rockbridge area come together in this one place on the globe, and the result is truly special — it’s the Rockbridge Vibe.

We interviewed three people who have recently moved to the area to get their impressions of their new home. Each has found things they really like about the Rockbridge area.

The Bruner Family

Stephen and his wife Bry moved here in 2023 with their three children from Columbus, GA. Stephen was previously in the US Army. He is the owner-operator of the Chick-fil-A that opened in December of 2023. He also serves in the Army Reserves as an Army ROTC instructor at VMI.

Stephen has been to Lexington several times before the family moved here, and actually attended several camps at VMI throughout high school and college. He grew up in West Virginia, and Bry was raised in Western Maryland. Both of them realized when they came here how much they had missed the mountains. They love the natural beauty of this area.

The Bruners also appreciate the benefits of living in a small town. Stephen said, “We love how much people care. Everybody seems to know everybody. “They also enjoy all the local celebrations and events like the Fourth of July, downtown Halloween trick-or-treating and Christmas parades.

When asked if there was anything he would like to have here that we lack, Stephen said he felt the area needs a sports complex, with a facility for indoor sports and outdoor playing fields. His children are active in sports, and he said that RARO, Rockbridge

United Soccer Club, Lexington Lacrosse, and other clubs provide a breadth of activities but that there’s limited playing fields. He stated, “The sports complex would be great asset for our youth and our community.”

The Bruners are understandably busy people with a business to run and three children, so they haven’t had a lot of time to explore the area. They do like walking and running on the Chessie Trail, downtown, and through the campuses of W&L and VMI.

The Rockbridge area benefitted from the opening of Chick-fil-A here and we gained an exceptional family as new neighbors.

Ann Cady

Ann Cady had definite ideas about the kind of community she wanted to move to. Her parents had lived In a lifecare community near Baltimore, and it had been a very positive experience. Lifecare communities offer the ability to live in independent living, and then transition to assisted living and nursing care as needs change. In choosing a locality, she had preferences for the type of climate and for the general characteristics of the area.

Matt Davis

Both he and his wife are from smaller towns, he from North Carolina and her in Georgia, so they appreciate the pace of life in the Rockbridge area. He enjoys exploring the area and commented on the natural beauty here, mentioning in particular Natural Bridge. He has found people here to be friendly and welcoming.

Matt came here last year from Georgia to work at Washington and Lee as the Director of Institutional History Museum and Galleries. He’s still going back to Georgia some weekends because his family has not yet moved to Lexington — his oldest daughter is finishing her senior year in high school. He hopes his wife and other two children will be joining him here later this year.

Matt is also is impressed with downtown Lexington, and the variety of shops and restaurants. Hardin’s and Legendary Eats he mentioned, and also taking in the occasional game at The Palms.

Coming from Georgia, where he said, “There are two seasons — hot and hotter.” He likes our four seasons.

He’s looking forward to getting the family back in one place soon and finding a house.

She moved to Kendal at Lexington in the summer of 2024, after living in western New York for 17 years. Horses have been a passion for her for much of her life, and while she doesn’t ride any longer, the area where she had lived in New York is horse country.

When she began looking for a community, she knew she wanted a Lifecare community. She did a lot of research, and visited a number of communities, including Kendal at Ithaca. But she wanted a place with a different climate from western New York, which has many days of overcast during the winter. She wanted to live where there were four distinct seasons. As she put it, “I found Kendal, and then I found Lexington.”

Ann previously lived In Virginia; in Richmond, Fauquier County and Reston. She had been to the Virginia Horse Center many times in the 1980s and 90s, so she was somewhat familiar with Lexington, though she said she had not spent much time in town.

During her search, good friends visited Kendal at Lexington and were impressed, and urged Ann to consider it. On her first visit to Kendal in 2022 she put her name on the waiting list. She visited again in the fall of 2022 and again in the summer of 2023, and made the decision to move here shortly thereafter.

She likes the college-town atmosphere of Lexington, and appreciates the positive impact of having young people as an integral part of the community. She appreciates the walkability of Lexington, mentioning particularly the Woods Creek Trail and the campuses, where she walks her dog. She also loved that she’s surrounded by countryside, and enjoys exploring Rockbridge County’s secondary roads. And, she says it’s not nearly as far to the beach from here as it was in New York.

She is pleasantly surprised that Rockbridge County still has a locally-owned weekly newspaper, noting that that has become rare these days.

When asked if she has found a favorite place in the Rockbridge area yet, she said, “No, I’m still exploring.” But she did mention the beautiful views from Great Valley Farm Brewery and Winery.

Ann had not thought that she would return to Virginia, but seems to have found much of what she was looking for at Kendal and in Lexington.
