Most people know that smoke alarms detect the presence of smoke and make a loud noise to warn you that there is a fire.

But how, exactly, do they do that?

There are two kinds of smoke alarms. ionization alarms

Ionization alarms contain electrically charged particles called ions. Smoke changes the electrical balance of the air.

When the balance changes, the alarm is triggered. Ionization alarms respond most quickly to heat and flames, so they are better at detecting fast spreading fires.

photoelectric alarms Inside every photoelectric alarm is a beam of light and a light sensor. When smoke is present, it moves the light so that it hits the sensor, which makes the alarm go off. Photoelectric alarms are best at detecting smoldering fires, which may smoke for hours before they burst into flames.

Because they work differently, both kinds of alarms should be placed in different parts of the house. Sometimes both types of sensors are in one alarm for extra protection.

If the door feels hot or if you see smoke, keep the door closed! Go to your second exit.

SMOKE ALARM SAVE LIVES! S Having working, properly installed, and maintained smoke alarms in your home greatly increases the chances that you and your family will survive a home fire.

Installing Smoke Alarms Install smoke alarms on every level of your house (including attics and basements), outside sleeping areas, and inside each bedroom.

Make sure you select smoke alarms approved by a recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriter’s Laboratory.

To avoid air currents, never install smoke alarms near vents, doors, or windows.

Place smoke alarms on ceilings or high on walls. Smoke alarms placed on walls should be no more than 12 inches from the ceiling.

WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY

• The location and the street address of the emergency.

• The nature of the emergency.

• The phone number from which you are calling.

• Additional details about the emergency. You may be asked to describe any injuries, medical symptoms, the locations of any fires burning, or any person who is suspected of having committed a crime.

Follow all instructions that the dispatcher gives you and only hang up once you are instructed to do so. If you call 9-1-1 by accident, don’t hang up. The dispatcher might think that an emergency exists and send responders to your location.

Instead, explain to the dispatcher what has happened.

There is a much greater danger than leaving behind shopping bags or groceries when frantically exiting a vehicle – a child could be left inside the car, where heat quickly climbs to deadly temperatures, even in the mildest climates. The idea that someone could forget a child seems unbelievable to most people, but it can happen to even the most attentive parents.

So many parents say, “I would never forget my child.” But each year about 37 children die from hyperthermia (heatstroke) because they are left inside of a car. Stress, exhaustion, and distraction can lead anyone to make dangerous mistakes.

Even if you are of the opinion that this could never happen to your family, you should still take precautions to prevent children from being left behind in a vehicle. What if you came across a child or pet left in a vehicle with climbing temperatures? You would probably call 9-1-1. But time is of the essence, so be sure you are ready to do what is necessary to protect the child from heatstroke. Your actions could save a life!
