Ionization alarms contain electrically charged particles called ions. Smoke changes the electrical balance of the air. When the balance changes, the alarm is triggered. Ionization alarms respond most quickly to heat and flames, so they are better at detecting fast spreading fires.

photoelectric alarms Inside every photoelectric alarm is a beam of light and a light sensor. When smoke is present, it moves the light so that it hits the sensor, which makes the alarm go off. Photoelectric alarms are best at detecting smoldering fires, which may smoke for hours before they burst into flames. Because they work differently, both kinds of alarms should be placed in different parts of the house. Sometimes both types of sensors are in one alarm for extra protection.

5. Stay low, and get out fast! If the door feels hot or if you see smoke, keep the door closed! Go to your second exit.

Crawl Low Below Smoke! Smoke from fire floats up in the air and can make you sick. So get down low and crawl under smoke. You can breathe better if you cover your nose with a cloth.

Installing Smoke Alarms Install smoke alarms on every level of your house (including attics and basements), outside sleeping areas, and inside each bedroom. Make sure you select smoke alarms approved by a recognized testing laboratory, such as Underwriter’s Laboratory. To avoid air currents, never install smoke alarms near vents, doors, or windows. Place smoke alarms on ceilings or high on walls. Smoke alarms placed on walls should be no more than 12 inches from the ceiling.

How to Make A Safe Escape Plan

If possible, install “dual sensor” alarms for maximum protection.

1. Draw a Floor Plan of Your Home - Your plan should have one page for each floor and include all bedrooms and exits (this includes windows and doors). Mark 2 Ways Out of every room and make an escape plan.

Consider installing “interconnected” smoke alarms. When one alarm sounds, the rest of the alarms will sound.

•Lights flicker? Switches hot to the touch? Contact a licensed electrician right away.

Reduce the risk of scalds in your bathroom with these helpful tips: • Always run cold water first. • Never leave children alone in the bathroom. Take your child with you if you have to leave the bathroom to answer the door or telephone. • Keep the bathroom door closed if the room isn’t in use.

Sweep the extinguisher from side to side until the fire goes out.

Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire and at least six inches past the edges of the flames until completely extinguished.

To use an extinguisher safely, stand six to eight feet from the fire with your back to an unblocked exit and use the PASS procedure.

People over the age of 64 are twice more likely to die in home fires. Why? The skin of older people is thinner and more vulnerable to fire, their reflexes slow down and the increased use of medications may lead to drowsiness. All of these factors can make quickly escaping a home fire difficult.
