the side of the road had he not been rescued that day and taken in for care. Sadly, he had two severe leg fractures and internal injuries. The puppy’s story was posted on Facebook and at the time there was concern that he may have to be euthanized unless he received intensive medical care and necessary surgeries. Fortunately, the pup’s guardian angel read the posting and came to his aid. Amy Castro, the director at Starlight Animal Rescue arrived at the shelter and took control of her new charge. She named him Rocket. Rocket received care at Family Animal Hospital of Friendswood where he was bandaged, radiographed, and given pain medications. Rocket was now more stable but still needed some major work to repair his legs. 10 Waves Magazine | January

The expansion, Cinnamon Shore South, gives buyers the opportunity to join the prettiest, beachside village in the Lone Star State.

Mark Schnell Urban Designer

When I first ventured to Mustang Island, located on the Gulf of Mexico in South Texas, I found a place that’s straight out of a Robert Earl Keen song. The iconic Texas musician sings that “the road goes on forever, and the party never ends.” But Mustang Island offered a twist on his lyrics: the road literally ends at the ship channel (and a ferry) in the old town area of Port Aransas. Even though the road does not go on forever, the party in Port Aransas never ends: lively beach bars, a robust restaurant scene, some of the best fishing around, and a funky beach town

REAL ESTATE &

vibe that comes in part from a location at the very end of the road. But I didn’t find the kind of walkable mixed-use communities that so many people – including many Texans – have come to love along Florida’s Highway 30A, a place that I call home. I met Jeff Lamkin in 2006 after he had purchased 60 acres on Mustang Island. He loved Port Aransas, but also saw potential in the wide open spaces just outside of old town to create a new community for beach-loving Texans. I designed the master plan and wrote the design code to generate a

walkable mixed-use community unlike anything constructed on the Texas coast. With a strong emphasis on design, we set out to create a new place to complement the old. In the 15 years that followed, the original 60-acre tract has been largely builtout. Hundreds of additional acres were purchased, and new phases are now under construction, with even more in the planning stages. Cinnamon Shore has grown to become the community that transformed the Texas coast.

M ICRONEEDL ING

MEET DR. TARA WEGRY N

BY : DR. TARA WEGRY N

M

icroneedling is a highly effective procedure that works to rej uvenate your skin by stimulating it to make new, collagen-rich tissue. The procedure itself involves creating pin-holes in the skin using a professional pen that delivers tiny needles to a precise depth. This controlled, mechanical inj ury stimulates the body’ s natural wound healing process. The result is increased production of G rowth F actors, collagen and elastin resulting in smoother tex ture, more even pigment and reduced pore siz e.

Ideal Candidates A n ideal candidate is anyone looking to modify the appearance or tex ture of her skin. M icroneedling improves skin lax ity, reduces lines, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and striae. The only clear contraindications to the procedure are blood or bone disorders such as anemia, blood or bone cancers, clotting issues or being on blood thinners. Clients should avoid any medications that reduce the body’ s ability to clot such as aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for a few days before and a few days after a treatment session.

One Treatment or a Series?

Nuts and Bolts M icroneedling can be performed in the office in less than an hour. A topical numbing cream is first applied to make the procedure pain-free. The face is then thoroughly cleansed and disinfected. The microneedling pen is then applied to the skin with depth adj ustments made for varying skin thickness. Peptides are applied to the face during the procedure in the form of a soothing serum and then immediately after, in a cool mask which will be removed before you leave the M edispa. Y ou will go home with a packet containing a peptide cleanser, peptide serum and peptide lotion which you will use ex clusively for at least 4 8 hours.

A lthough a series of 3 -4 sessions at least one month apart is generally recommended for the very best results (with epidermis thickening up to 4 0 0 % at 6 months), we have seen remarkable result after a single session in patients with skin surface and pigment irregularities. Deeper acne scars will probably req uire multiple sessions, but you can decide for yourself based on your results. In general, clients have been so pleased with the results from the first microneedling, they have often chosen to add a second.

Conclusion

Dr. Tara Wegryn is a board-certified Neurologist and Electrophysiologist and a member in good standing with the IAP AM (International Association for P hysicians in Aesthetic Medicine). Dr. Wegryn received her MD from the U niversity of Florida and residency in Neurology at the Cleveland Clinic. In 1996, Dr. Wegryn founded Houston Neuromonitoring, a successful intraoperative monitoring company that served the surgical community at the TMC (Texas Medical Center) for over 17 years. Dr. Tara Wegryn is currently the director/ owner of Refresh Medispa in Galveston, Texas.

If you want smoother, healthier looking skin and are ready to take the nex t step, microneedling may be the right choice for you.

What to Expect After A fter microneedling, you can ex pect some redness, some bruising and mild swelling. In addition to being asked to use your peptide after-care products, you will need to avoid make-up, abrasive cleansers, pool saunas, direct sun ex posure and any products containing Retin-A . Improvement in your skin’ s tex ture and pigmentation will begin almost immediately, but the max imum improvement may take a month to be fully ex pressed. I know that sounds like a long time to wait, but you will be AMAZED at the results. (See real client picture on the right, 2 months after O NE microneedling procedure).

I messed up with this one and deprived myself of several weeks of great food and service. Now that I have tried Shucks, you can be certain it will be one of my regular stops. Visitors and residents alike should put this place on their list of new places to try. I think you will agree with me that there is no other place like this in G alveston. Street parking only. M

any years ago, I was a private in the US A rmy stationed at F ort Devens M assachusetts. M emories of that long-ago time are receding but aside from the fierce cold and never-ending snow, I vividly remember the ex cellent Italian food. It didn’ t matter if it was a humble piz z a restaurant outside the base in the town of A yer or a swanky place in Boston’ s north end with limos parked outside and dangerous-looking men, the common denominator was ex cellence.

M y later years would take me to New J ersey, Philadelphia, New Y ork City, and other northeast destinations. The Italian food is ubiq uitous in that region and uniformly delicious. It is, therefore, no surprise to me that most of our fine Italian restaurants in G alveston have roots going back to the northeastern United States. One of our finest and most consistent family restaurants in G alveston is G ino’ s Italian Restaurant & Piz z eria. Q uaint and unassuming, this restaurant has been family-owned and operated since 1 9 7 5 . The owner is originally from New

J ersey and has brought those authentic flavors and recipes to generations of thankful G alvestonians and visitors. They take great pride in using the freshest and finest ingredients and making their sauces and dishes in-house using time-tested recipes and techniq ues and it shows! F rom the very first bite, you will realiz e this is someplace special. Dedicated wait staff will guide you through the menu options - there are many. A ll their pasta dishes are outstanding. One of my benchmark dishes is simple spaghetti and meatballs in a marinara sauce. There is nothing simple about this dish here. The spaghetti noodles are a perfect “al dente”, the marinara is obviously fresh and not canned. It is a bright and refreshing tomato sauce with balanced acidity and subtle garlic and herb undertones. The meatballs are large and perfectly ex ecuted. The complimentary garlic bread is hot and tasty. But that is j ust the start. Their chicken and veal parmigiana is eq ually delicious. L ightly breaded and fried, drenched in sauce, and topped with a high-q uality cheese. It is served with a side of spaghetti and is a huge portion. Their chicken cacciatore is different from most other restaurants. It is an unusual and delicious treat and my favorite. Personally, I am not a fan of “ A lfredo” dishes, but my dining companions that enj oy these dishes proclaim G ino’ s to be very good. Piz z as are popular here, although this is much more than a typical piz z eria. M any people proclaim G ino’ s piz z a to be the best on the island. I cannot comment on that as we have many fine piz z a options, but I can say that G ino’ s is very good and offers great value especially with their free local delivery to area homes and hotels. They have a lunch menu that includes a soft drink and is one

of the best bargains around. F or about $ 9 .0 0 you get your choice of several entrees including the aforementioned spaghetti and parmigiana dishes. A ll come with complimentary garlic bread and pleasant service. Off-street parking in their large lot is appreciated in the congested 6 1 st area. Handicapped accessibility is very good, and they have a small patio for outdoor dining. One visit and I am certain you will agree that this is not your average restaurant.

A Mobile You in 2022 S

tretching is kind of like drinking enough water during the day: we know we need to do it, but chances are, most of us are probably not doing it often enough, if at all. If there is one thing, one thing, you can do for yourself to improve your q uality of life as the new year begins, consider committing to incorporate a few simple stretches as part of your daily routine. The key here is D A I LY!

If you can change your mindset from the notion of flex ibility to the mindset of mobility, perhaps the need to stretch every day will be more evident. M obility is about daily things that become harder the older you get, like bending down to tie a shoe, walking upstairs, picking your kid or grandkid up from the floor, or even j ust getting up off the couch. Improving your mobility makes these daily activities easier. Whether you stretch first thing in the morning or last thing at night, stretching doesn’ t have to be tedious or an ordeal. Y ou can stretch well and reap the benefits in five to ten minutes. Y ou can perform most of these stretches, either staying in the position shown for 3 0 seconds (static) or moving in and out of the pose (dynamic). F ocus on deep breathing while you are in the stretch, and you’ ll probably ex perience some mental stress relief, too. 48 Waves Magazine | January 2022

Begin by doing these four simple stretches every day and your body will thank you. Swear

egs up the

all

M uscles targeted: hamstrings, glutes, spine, and hips while taking pressure off your lower back. F urthermore, the angle of the body in this posture reduces the curve of the lumbar spine, which will elongate and stretch the back muscles. Directions: Place a bolster pillow under your lower back or lie flat on the floor. Rest your buttocks and back of your legs on a wall. Open your arms out to the side. This is a powerful and restorative pose that helps send blood flow to your core, ease stress, enables you to sleep, calms your nerves, relieves swollen ankles, relieves the discomfort of varicose veins, relieves headaches, and improves digestion. Y ou may feel a tingling sensation in your legs and feet, especially if you hold this pose for ex tended periods. Y ou may also feel as though your legs and feet have fallen asleep. If this happens, bend www.wavesgalveston.com

your knees into your chest before returning to the pose. Or you can shake your legs to stimulate circulation. A void this stretch if you have any concerns with blood coming to the head. Or if you have medical conditions such as glaucoma, hypertension, or hernia.

igure our Stretch M uscles targeted: piriformis (a deep gluteal muscle), hips, glutes, lower back, hamstrings Directions: L ie on your back with your feet flat on the floor. Cross your left foot over your right q uad. L ift your right leg off the floor. G rab onto the back of your right leg and gently pull it toward your chest. When you feel a comfortable stretch, hold it there. Hold for 3 0 seconds to 2 minutes. Switch sides and repeat. This specifically stretches the piriformis and iliopsoas muscles ( e s s e n t i a l l y y o u r h ip r o ta to r a n d fle x o r m u s c le s ) and the IT band. Piriformis is translated as “pear shaped” muscle. The word piriformis comes from the L atin words pirum, meaning “pear,” and forma meaning “form or shape.” The piriformis muscle attaches onto the

anterior sacrum, which is inside the pelvic bowl. The other end of the muscle attaches to the very top of the femur, which is called the greater trochanter. Because of this and the passive nature of the pose, it is an ex cellent and gentle approach to helping relieve symptoms associated with sciatica and knee pain.

Glute Bridge M uscles targeted: glutes, q uads, core Directions: L ie on your back with your knees bent and feet as close to your pelvis as possible. Press down through your heels and lift your pelvis off the floor. Continue lifting until your body makes a straight line from your shoulders to your knees (your shoulders should still be on the floor). Keep your knees in line with your feet. Hold at the top before lowering back down.

Try using blocks to bring the floor closer to you if you can’ t q uite reach the floor. F eel free to bend your knees slightly. This stretch is the ultimate full-body stretch. It’ s ideal for office workers who spend too much time sitting at a computer. Camellia

D

uring this time of year, you might start to notice green shrubs that are blooming in beautiful shades of pink, white, and red. There is a really good chance that these shrubs are Camellia sasanq uas or Camelia Japonica. There are also hybrids of these two plants.

is perfect. If you are top dressing your Camellias with organic compost, no other fertiliz ing is necessary. A s with all your beds- compost, compost, compost, mulch, mulch, mulch!

These lovely plants cherished throughout the South bloom from late summer and well into winter, depending on the varieties. The sasanq ua varieties have smaller blooms than the j aponica varieties, but the blooms are in such great numbers and with lovely scents. These are heirloom type plants that will grow and bloom for years, even decades.

There are so many varieties to choose from with all sorts of bloom colors. Siz es will vary also, from 2 foot to 1 2 feet tall- there is a shrub to fit any garden spot.

Regularly treating these shrubs with an organic fungicide is very important. A s we have discussed in previous articles, fungus is a challenge on the Tex as G ulf Coast.

A s you make plans for your garden, any one of these beauties would be an ex cellent choice. Camelias like soils similar to az aleas- slightly acidic, rich in organic matter and well drained. The perfect spot would have morning and afternoon shade. A mature plant can tolerate full sun so long as their roots are sheltered. It is also important to protect the plants from harsh north winds. F all is the best time for planting. This gives the shrub time to develop strong roots before a hard, hot summer arrives. This is true for most any plant in our z one. Camellias cannot tolerate a prolonged drought, so watering will be essential. However, one inch once a week 54 Waves Magazine | January 2022

Over the years of owning a gourmet food business, it’ s been a pleasure meeting so many folks that share my passion at tradeshows, on social media, and at cooking competitions across the country. Scott Hariton, Owner of Scott’ s Smoked Q in Odenton, M D, is one of those nice folks and sent me a couple of bottles of his seasoning to try. I chose his “Classic Dry Rub” in the hunters’ soup as a replacement for my Southwestern Siz z ler blend.

with J an & De a n Hi Jan and Dean. hope you had a Merry Christmas. wish could say that did. had the surprise of my life and it was not a pleasant one. My husband Chuck told me a few weeks before Christmas that his company did not give him a Christmas bonus this year and that he would not be able to afford much in the way of Christmas gifts for me. felt bad for him and told him that was perfectly all right with me. said that we have each other and that was plenty good enough for me. sincerely meant that. On Christmas Day my husband made good on his word. The only gift that received from him was a Betty Crocker cookbook which happen to know he already had. stayed upbeat told him thank you and that as long as we have each other and our health we will be ne. ell a few days after Christmas the shocker came. was opening our credit card bills to pay them and have never been so hurt in my life. Among the things that my husband had purchased was very e pensive ewelry from Tiffany s an all terrain wheel drive Kawasaki vehicle numerous charges from ouis Vuitton and countless other very high dollar items. was crushed. confronted Chuck about this and he lied about it at rst claiming he didn t make those purchases. hen told him to not be ridiculous and to stop lying to me he nally came clean. He said the gifts were for his e wife and her son from another marriage. He said that he felt like doing something nice for them as he still had fond memories of their time together. feel like a fool. believed Chuck when he said there was no money to buy me anything for Christmas. Here am with the Jelly of the Month Club gift like Clark Griswold while my husband s e wife and her son received thousands of dollars of gifts.

Second, he doesn’ t care anything about you, or he wouldn’ t have done what he did. He doesn’ t care at all about your feelings and has z ero respect for you or your marriage. He put those purchases on a credit card that he knew eventually you would see. I believe he wanted you to see them. This way, he didn’ t have to confront you about his lack of feelings and love towards you. He let these purchases do the talking. It’ s the chicken way out! It’ s no secret that I like to place wagers on things. I would bet heavily that Chuck and his ex -wife are hooking up behind your back. No q uestion in my mind about that. I am not going to recommend counseling of any kind. I am going to recommend that you end this charade of marriage. End it now! Y ou seem like a very thoughtful, kind lady. Y ou certainly deserve better.

W of things.

ell Carol, I’ m usually not speechless, ask anybody, but you have got me speechless here. Y our husbands’ actions show you where you stand in the grand scheme

I have a few q uestions. If you see the credit card receipts, don’ t you also see the bank statements to know if he got a bonus? Has your husband been acting strange lately? Is he staying late at “work”? I’ m with Dean when he thinks Chuck is involved with his ex -wife again. To j ust plain lie to you about something like this is downright shameful. I could not stay with a man that lied to me and treated me this way. I would lose all feelings for him. f it were me, d first ask around for a good lawyer, and then give Chuck his walking papers. Of course, it’ s your choice. If you decide to stay, I have a feeling he won’ t be around much longer. Beat him to the punch!

truly don t know what to do. am hurt beyond belief and feel like could never trust my husband about anything again. Please help me Jan and Dean. Carol s Crushed

H

i Carol, I feel your pain. This is so wrong for multiple reasons. F irst of all, your husband is a bold-faced liar. Chuck straight up lied to you. Y ou are the person that he is supposed to love more than anyone else. I’ m going to be very blunt; you can never trust or believe another word that comes out of his mouth. V

Beach Bum Happy ew Year

avers

Your Bum hopes everyone en oyed a happy oyous and safe night while ringing in .

I

recently read that rather than joining a dating site, that a grocery store is a great place to find a new mate. I thought about this the other day while I was out riding around in my ol’ scarab. It’ s not like me to have many thoughts in a day, but here is what had me thinking...

I agree that a grocery store might be a good way to search for a new mate. However, your Bum thinks it is very important to take a very hard look at what items are in the person’ s shopping cart that you are checking out. This can be a real insight as to who this person is. Since your Bum is a male, I’ m going to write this from the man’ s perspective. I want to hear from my female friends to see what you think the ladies should look for in the man’ s basket. L et me hear from you, ladies.

Okay guys here is what you should be looking for in the ladies shopping cart. Some items are a GO and some are de nitely a STOP.

CHARCOAL T his is a G O . Here is a lady that likes to cook out! This is high on your Bum’ s list of things he really likes. This lady is a keeper.

B R T his is a G O . This lady is not some wine sipper. This lady will probably be fun and outgoing. The kind of lady that would enj oy going out for some live music and having some cold ones with you.

K TTY TT R T his is a ST O P . Not to offend my cat loving friends but having a pet that does their business inside the house is not on your Bum’ s list of things he loves. L ook for the lady with dog food in the cart.

BACO A definite GO. This lady likes to cook breakfast. Y our Bum’ s favorite meal. Imagine cooking a nice Sunday Brunch together.

BA T RO D RS T his is a ST O P . This is a lady that either doesn’ t know how to cook or doesn’ t like to. Plus, she has the bad taste to buy this kind of horrible “food.”

ST AKS T his is a G O . No Vegan here. This lady likes her red meat. Throw this steak on the charcoal grill and you really have something. NOTE OF CAUTION GUYS: Check carefully to see that there is only one steak in the cart. If there are two steaks, that might mean that there is a boyfriend close by. Y our Bum is looking out for you.

D STR AM MAGA T his is a G O . This lady is fantastic. She likes the outdoors and wants to learn even more about it. Here is a lady that might even have a bass boat. Doesn’ t get any better than this.

D AP RS T his is a ST O P . I’ m not going to comment much on this one. Y our Bum is on enough thin ice with the ladies as it is. M y thought is this, the lady might be someone with several grandchildren that her kids are always ex pecting her to baby sit.

B B C CR AM A bonus GO. A fter you and your new lady have polished off some steaks and cold beers, settle in for some great Tex as Blue Bell ice cream. Wowser!

H MM S T his is a ST O P . Y our Bum is not ex actly sure what Hummus even is. It’ s some kind of misguided concoction of mashed chickpeas and other ingredients your Bum doesn’ t want. L ook for the lady with the F rench Onion dip and salsa.

Guys, your Bum has provided you with a wonderful dating guide. Make good use of it. Ladies, this was written firmly with tongue in cheek. Your Bum does want to hear what you would look for in a guy' s shopping cart. The G oes and Stops. Hit me up and let me know. 66 Waves Magazine | January 2022

nother year is in the books and a new one is keeping us busy. People say getting older is a state of mind. While there may be some truth to that, I would have to say when I get out of bed in the morning, it’ s not my mind telling me I’ m older; it’ s the cricks in my j oints, the pain in my back, and bunions on my feet that are screaming at me that I’ m well on my way to being an older person!!!! L ol! M ost of my Island friends have figured this out, and time waits for no one. F or those who have yet to realiz e this, I’ ve included a few q uotes from some inspirational folks. See if you can relate to any of them. uote 1 “When you get to my age, you’ ll really measure your success in life by how many of the people you want to have love you…actually do love you. I know people who have a lot of money, and they get testimonial dinners, and they get hospital wings named after them. But the truth is that nobody in the world loves them. If you get to my age in life and nobody thinks well of you, I don’ t care how big your bank account is, your life is a disaster.” – Warren Buffett uote “Nobody grows old merely by living a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Y ears may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.” – Minister and columnist, Frank Crane uote “Beautiful young people are accidents of nature, but beautiful old people are works of art.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

uote “There is a fountain of youth; it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” – Sophia Loren A s we look forward to 2 0 2 2 , I want each of you to take a good look in the mirror. F or us Islanders, we’ re not as young as we use to be. Our lives have been pretty darn good at times, and at times we’ ve been dealt the difficult hand of life. F rom my ex periences, I do know those who play their cards have a better chance at winning (at what life has to offer) than if they j ust fold and wait for something better. I don’ t know what hand you’ re playing now; I j ust hope it’ s a good one. That being said, I’ ll end with my own q uote. uote “I’ m living the good life today, for if I don’ t, I may miss a grand opportunity; because tomorrow is not guaranteed.” -Yours truly, John Valastro I hope each of you gets a glorious opportunity to grow old with family and friends. If not, don’ t be afraid to reach out to us islanders. We will always offer you a pick-me-up conversation, a trip to the bar, lunch at a local dive, a cup of coffee, or a ride around town on a golf cart. See, we islanders don’ t mind growing old together. Happy New Year and let’s play the hand we’ve been dealt, you never know, it might be the best hand ever!

The world doesn’t care Ronald McDonald House Want To Volunteer?

V

olunteering at the Ronald House brings a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment to those who are willing to give a few hours to perform minor but essential tasks needed in the every-day function of a home as large as this one is. Twenty bedrooms, nearly all occupied at the same time, some families staying for only a day or two while others come for much longer visits up to a month or more in some cases. If you have special skills, training, hobbies or speak any foreign languages, please come share with us…can you lead a group in singing along with your musical talent…can you teach the children to speak a few words or sing a song in your native or learned language…do you know a special dance (think “chicken dance” or the “cha-cha-cha” or “folklorico”) all children love to sing and dance. Karaoke is a favorite if you own a machine!

Duties that need to be done on a daily basis include acting as a receptionist and answering phone calls, preparation of rooms for incoming families, helping in the business office, cooking and baking, playing Bingo and hosting family activities as well as providing “arts and crafts” sessions. Host a party! Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter, Birthdays…etc. We are always seeking friendly, energetic and creative volunteers…let that be you! Call the Ronald McDonald House of Galveston at 409-762-8770 Volunteer opportunities.

If there are more kids than coats. If there are more empty stomachs than full plates. If there are more people than beds. If there’s more hurt than healing, More despair than hope, or more bad than good.

But thankfully, you do. Every day, nearly 40 million hardworking Americans battle poverty. Help them win. A sustaining monthly gift of just $25 helps us double our ability to assist those in need throughout your community.
