Letter from the President There were many changes in 2019 for the Roane Alliance and the Chamber. Not only did I become the Chamber President officially, but a new Manager and a new Chair were also named. Dana Peterka officially took the reins as Chamber Chair on July 1, and shortly after, Tori May began managing the Chamber. The membership has never seemed stronger, both in support of Chamber businesses and Chamber Board and I am looking forward to moving the Chamber forward with expanded membership opportunities and benefits. I am confident with this new leadership, the Chamber will have an incredible year in 2020.

I believe strong leadership is behind every successful Chamber of Commerce, which, in turn, is behind every strong community. The Roane Chamber is especially strong because of its Board of Directors, Ambassadors and active members. And, with the support of the Alliance staff, can assist growth and development in our community by connecting, promoting, supporting and advocating for business.

New and existing programs in 2019 proved successful and we are looking to add even more in 2020.

The new Women’s Executive Program, co-hosted with the Greenwood School Education Foundation, had many attendees that were inspired by four outstanding speakers, and raised nearly $1,000 for the foundation; and The Chamber Ambassadors program continued to find ways to ‘give back’ to the community – raising $1,000 for Michael Dunn, providing prom dresses and tuxedo’s to students in need; and The new Lifetime Membership level that saw a number of existing members upgrade as soon as it launched.

The Chamber can also help the community and it’s businesses by advocating for policies and projects that are important for business growth. As a member your voice is heard, providing yet another important benefit for the growth and success of your business. As the chair, Dana has led the charge on many such issues: improving education opportunities for all students, increasing digital access to all residents/businesses, and much more.

So, I urge individuals and business owners to not only consider supporting the Chamber through membership, but more importantly, getting actively involved through your membership. Through membership you can advocate for your community, meet and network with your peers, lend your voice to important issues, and work alongside fellow members to help Roane County prosper.

The mission of the Roane Alliance is to create an environment and unified voice that promotes job creation, economic development, enhanced quality of life, and education and workforce development.

We work every day towards our mission but we can’t do it alone. It requires leadership from the business community, municipalities, elected officials, educators, and residents. I encourage you to please stop in and find out more about the Roane Alliance and how to become more involved as a Chamber member.

Letter from the Chairman It is an honor to serve as the new Chairman of the Chamber Board of Directors. There were accomplishments for the Chamber this year and much of that will be covered in the 2019 Roane Alliance Annual Report (available in late February). I want to take this opportunity to talk more about the changes and future of the Chamber.

We thank Pam May, who completed her first year as Chamber President. We welcome Tori May as the new Chamber Manager and a key member who supports our board and as always, we thank Allen Lutz for his continued and widely recognized contributions to Education and Workforce Development, a key component of the Chamber’s mission. Additionally, the rest of the Alliance staff does an excellent job supporting the Chamber through marketing, business retention, and more and we thank them as well.

More importantly, we recognize those who contribute their time and energy to support the growth of our existing businesses and industries. Included in these volunteers are our 25 Board members and 46 Chamber Ambassadors. Our Chamber has over 400 members who employ 14,000 people. We thank our members for their continuing support!

Too often, we focus so much on current issues that we don’t step back and reflect on the strengths of our wonderful community. Here is my quick list: the new National Park; 39,000 acre lake with 738 miles of shoreline; 8 exits on I-40, a major thoroughfare for commerce; a leading National Lab with the world’s fastest super computer (and also recently hiring 1,000 new employees); 4 leadership programs for adults or youth; a planned third general aviation airport in our metro area; and both a Roane State Community College and Tennessee College of Applied Technology located here (only 8 counties in the state with both). Not to mention, free college tuition with the TN Promise and TN Reconnect programs. And I am certain you can add more to this list! When you reflect on how we stack up against our neighboring rural counties, you will realize how truly blessed we are.

The Chamber Board has determined the following initiatives are three of our top priorities: 1.

Efficient K-14 completion for all youth. Every student should be able to achieve their full potential and have prosperous careers and lives. My vision is we offer accelerated, career-focused education paths, individually tailored to meet the interests of each student. What if every student could earn their post high school degree or certificate more quickly and be debt free?

Affordable and effective digital access for all residents and businesses. Digital access is essential to attract not only businesses to our community, but also young professionals and retirees.

Would you be surprised to learn that every household in Morgan County, and most in Scott County, has access to fiber optic cable?

Prevent the looming arrival of invasive Asian Silver carp. These jumping carp threaten to destroy 50% of the economic impact of our lake, a potential loss estimated at over $408 million, or $7,731 per resident, for the Roane County portion of Watts Bar Lake. Think about the potential impact of this loss on jobs and tax revenue.

I look forward to leading the Chamber into 2020, ensuring we follow business best practices of continuous improvement in everything we do and focusing on the priorities which are really important to business growth.

Roane Alliance Staff Pam May, CTTP, TMP President/CEO pmay@roanealliance.org Pam May joined the team in 2008, promoting Roane Alliance and the county to potential industry, visitors and retirees. Pam is a Certified Tennessee Tourism Professional (CTTP) and Tourism Marketing Professional (TMP). Pam is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and Leadership Roane County.

She enjoys boating on Watts Bar Lake with her family or live music at local venues.

Justin Snow Vice President of Economic Development jsnow@roanealliance.org Justin Snow joined the Alliance team in 2017. Previously, he spent 17 years working for AT&T in the telecommunications industry. He is a graduate of East Tennessee State University where he earned a BS in Business Administration and played on the baseball team. While at the Alliance, he has graduated from Leadership Roane County (Class of 2018) and TVA Rural Leadership (Class of 2019). Justin enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, and coaching his son’s sports teams.

Teresa Jackson Vice President of Operations tjackson@roanealliance.org Teresa Jackson has served on the Alliance team since 1999. She attended the Tennessee College of Applied Technology, is a 2015 graduate of Leadership Roane County and completed Tennessee Basic Economic Development. She serves on the United Way Board, Community Advisory Committee for Roane Academy and is Roane’s ThreeStar program coordinator. Teresa enjoys reading, listening to music and spending time with her grandchildren.

Allen Lutz Education and Workforce Director alutz@roanealliance.org Allen Lutz joined the team in 2008. He was the education director for Junior Achievement of East Tennessee and the first director of JA BizTown prior to coming to the Alliance. He was also a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army, serving on active duty 21 years. Allen has a MBA from the University of New Orleans and is a 2011 graduate of Leadership Roane County.

She has been an active member of the Chamber’s Ambassador program for years and has served as the group’s chair this past year. A native of Roane County, Tori is a graduate of Roane County High School and Leadership Roane County’s Class of 2019.

She is a graduate of Roane County High School and Tennessee Tech University. Kaley and her husband, Matthew, have two children. They enjoy spending their weekends on Watts Bar Lake accompanied by family and friends. During her spare time, Kaley also enjoys photography and gardening. She is excited for the opportunity to be back in her hometown and to be a part of the Roane Alliance!

He is a graduate of Roane County High School and attended Roane State Community College. Scott is a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College and Roane Leadership. He previously worked 14 years for the Roane County Government in the Office of Emergency Services and Risk Management. Scott is eager to continue serving the people of Roane County through the various projects with the Alliance.

ADVANCED PRIMARY STROKE CENTER Roane Medical Center is an accredited Advanced Primary Stroke Center, which means our hospital has highly trained staff and advanced technology to treat stroke. And since Roane Medical Center is a member of Covenant Health, our region’s only stroke hospital network, quick access to interventional stroke care at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center is available when needed.

EMERGENCY With 15 private rooms and 24 hour staffing for the treatment of adult and pediatric emergencies, we provide prompt, excellent care in a comfortable and convenient setting.

SURGERY The surgery department includes technologically advanced surgical suites for general, endoscopic, orthopedic and other specialty surgeries.

CARDIOLOGY Our fully digital catheterization lab offers a variety of specialized procedures, including the treatment of peripheral vascular disease.

We offer cardiac diagnostic services and cardiac/pulmonary rehabilitation, which provides personalized programs and education courses for our patients.

WOMEN’S SERVICES We offer 3D mammography, which can detect breast cancer, earlier – even in women with dense breast tissue, and breast ultrasounds, stereotactic and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy procedures, and bone densitometry.
