Winter BLUES

et me just be the first to say that January sucks. The holidays are over, the grind is in full effect and there’s no break in sight.

From a journalistic standpoint, January and February are the hardest times to find stories. It’s too cold for things to be going on. People become hermits. I guess it’s probably a good month for Netflix, though.

I knew all of this, but it’s all compounded when you’re a staff of three. Two of those people sell ads. Add in holidays with our own families, events in Boonville and other responsibilities and it’s sometimes hard to keep up.

In addition to Boonville View, Debi and Gary own the 1901 Emporium and are currently renovating the upper level to make it truly home. I work with my dad at A Family Thing and make T-shirts and other small items. I also work part-time.

We all run around like crazy, but we do this because we truly love our community. We try to be everywhere and know everyone, but we’re only human. Publications like this NEED the support of the community. Not only to read, but to fill. It’s always surprised me that since I work in media, people assume that I know every single thing that goes on. I’m just like you. No angel descends out of the heavens to bless me with all the knowledge every morning. I don’t know things unless someone tells me. Please, let me know if you see something good.

Better yet, snap a picture! Write up a small article. I promise, I’m good at editing and can correct grammar and punctuation like nobody’s business. You CAN write. And if you can’t, it takes me so much less time to correct it than it would to write it.

I’m a firm believer that we need a voice in the community. Welcome to your voice!

First big fire in the history of Boonville. Loss about $45,000 The home fire apparatus almost useless.

Much saved by the drizzling rain and still Air Evansville help too late The most disastrous fire in the history of the town of Boonville occurred last Friday night.

About 11 o’clock parties discovered the smoke issuing from the second floor of M. Folsom’s dry goods store, south side Public Square,

and at once sounded the alarm. Very soon the blaze broke forth, and the upper part of the building was enveloped in flames. The church bells were rung and the people rushed to the scene. The two fire engines and hose reels of the town were soon brought into action, but with the limited power (both being hand engines) very little could be done to stay the progress of the flames. In a few minutes an explosion of powder occurred in the Folsom building, making a terrible noise, but doing no great damage.

This explosion awakened most of the citizens of the town, but many mistook it for an

earthquake. A few minutes later, two more powder explosions occurred, but not so violent as the first. Meanwhile, people were saving goods from the first floor of Folsom’s store and the other adjoining buildings, while others were working the engines and hose. Two streams of water from the two engines were constantly kept playing on the fire, but they were not powerful enough to put out the flames. Undoubtedly the F. C. Hepp business block was saved by the hand engines and hose, but beyond this it is doubtful if they accomplished any good. Had the town possessed waterworks the fire could have been extinguished in its incipiency.

The flames finally spread to the adjoining Wilkie three story block on the east and the A. J. Baker building on the west. Not a breath of air was stirring and a drizzling rain was falling during the most destructing moments of the fire. It is almost certain that the whole south side of the Public Square would have been destroyed had it not been for the stillness of the air and the falling rain. Hundreds of people stood by willing to stay the progress of the fire, but they were entirely helpless. Then it was that the public saw clearly demonstrated the need of waterworks in case of fire; for with powerful engines, plenty of hose and almost any kind of a fire organization, this city would have saved thousands of dollars last Friday night. It was distressing, almost a shame, to see the flames spread from one building to another, when they could easily have been saved with the instrumentalies, which Boonville, a town of 2,500 inhabitants, ought to possess.

At 12:30 o’clock an appeal was sent by telegraph to Evansville for aid. Had the help not been delayed by some necessary red tape, much good could have been accomplished.

Chief Schlevick summoned a crew from No. 1 hose house, and in a little bit had an engine and hose reel at the Air Line depot in readiness; but it was necessary to reach the railroad official, Mr. Sample, who was at Princeton, to secure a car and locomotive. Soon as this permission arrived the special train and crew pulled out for Boonville. This was 1:23 o’clock. The crew consisted of Engineer Hanselman, Fireman Eppinger, Brakeman Brenner, Conductor Sprinkle, and the fire crew - Ass’t Chief Harris, Chas. Dexter, Geo. Schmidt, James Cox, Henry Blum and This.

Coughlin. The special train arrived here at 1:43 o’clock, making the trip in 20 minutes, two minutes being lost by a stop. Thus the train actually made the trip to Boonville at a speed of a mile a minute, the distance being 18 miles from beginning to end. But they were too late to be of any assistance, and the engine and reel were not taken off the car.

During all this time the fire had destroyed three fine brick blocks; and the Jacob Gross frame building which had just begun to burn, was completely crushed by the falling walls of the Baker

building. The progress of the fire here checked of its own accord, and nothing but the ruins of four business blocks were remaining.

As to the origin of the fire, no plausible theory has been advanced. It originated on the second floor of Folsom’s store, and that is as far as certainty goes. The origin is thought to be accidental, not incendiary; but it is one of those mysterious causes which will probably never be cleared up.

The aggregate loss of the fire is estimated at about $45,000. Some of the goods were saved, but the damage was not small in throwing them about and dragging them through the very muddy streets.

The losses and insurance, as accurately as we have been able to obtain figures, are as follows: J.G. Shyrock, owner of the Folsom store building. Loss on building $6,000; insurance $4,700.

M. Folsom, dry goods and general merchandise. Loss about $27,000; insurance $20,000; probably $3,000 worth of goods saved.

Chas Wilie, owner of three story brick building. Loss $4,000; no insurance.

Kuntzman & Schneider, boots and shoes.

Loss $1,500; insurance $1,000; about $400 in goods saved.

Modern Woodmen of America lodge. Loss $75; no insurance.

K. of P. lodge. Loss $600; insurance $300.

A. J. Baker, owner three story block. Loss $3,500; insurance $1,000.

A. J. Honeycutt, lawyer. Loss $400; insurance $200.

Sun printing office, owned by W. Z Bennett, M. Ketcham, G. Roller, F. Hart, T. Partridge, G. W. White & M. Campbell. Loss $500; no insurance.

Jacob Gross, butcher. Loss on building and contents, $2,000; insurance $1,900; about $400 of contents saved.

F. C. Hepp, groceries and hardware, damage to walls of building probably $2,500, and damage to queensware within, about $1,200. This damage was caused by the falling walls of the Wilkie building. insurance $3,000 on building

and $6,500 on stock.

Others who met with smaller losses, resulting in damages to stock that was removed and roughly handled, were Mrs. M. Cady, milliner; W. Last, boot and shoes; L. Keller, boots and shoes. J. L. Taylor, attorney, saved most of his books, but lost about $100 worth of office furniture, etc., no insurance. The east wall of the Post Office building, belonging to Edward Gough, was slightly damaged by falling walls of the Baker block.

A large portion of the walls of the Wilkie building fell about 9 o’clock Saturday morning, damaging the west wall of the Hepp building. It is feared that this entire wall will have to be torn down and built anew.

The prospects of rebuilding are fairly encouraging.

Messrs. J. G. Shyrock and Jacob Gross will rebuild probably soon. As to Messrs. Baker and Wilkie, it is doubtful if they will replace their destroyed business blocks, but the lots are too valuable to remain long vacant.

W. C. Hunton’s safe fell from the third floor, and when dragged out of the ruins, it was found the door was knocked off, and all the valuables inside destroyed, although some of the books, accounts, etc. were luckily kept in his gallery in Tell City. the safe of M. Folsom preserved all his books, accounts, etc., but some were scorched.

The fire was a disastrous misfortune for Boonville. Hitherto the town has been lucky in escaping damaging fires. It teaches several valuable lessons in various directions. The unfortunate citizens who have lost property in the calamity have the deep sympathy of every individual in this community.

Our citizens feel very grateful to the Evansville fire department, even though its service arrived too late to render needed aid. The members of the crew were taken in charge by our Councilmen, treated to a nice warm breakfast at Mrs. Korb’s restaurant before returning home. The cost of the fire crew’s trip here, however, will probably not be less than $75.

Shaking hands with Bobby Kennedy

hen Robert F. Kennedy stopped off in Boonville in April of 1968, during his campaign sweep for the office of the President of the United States, the very air that we breathed was charged with excitement.

Preparations for the big day had begun months before. Boonville attorney Burley Scales spent countless hours on the phone, negotiating this visit. Boonville mayor Robert Millis, ordered a thorough street washing and cleaning store windows all around, as well as new patriotic American flags installed at Boonville City Hall and the Boonville Post Office.

The Boonville High School band not only practiced numerous patriotic numbers, they also were given brand new uniforms to wear. All of the businesses around the square locked their doors and many hung

small American flags in their windows in anticipation of this glorious occasion.

When Bobby Kennedy arrived with his wife, Ethel, and three of their children, David, Courtney and Michael, and their dog, Freckles, they were nearly three hours later than expected. Stepping up to the podium at the edge of the courthouse lawn, he apologized to the waiting crowd, saying that, since they were so near the Abraham Lincoln memorial and the former boyhood home of “Abe,” he wanted his children to have the chance “to pay their respects.”

“They may never have that chance again,” he said, in that “Kennedy voice,” with a boyish grin and a lock of hair down over one eye. He was relaxed, he seemed approachable, it was more than obvious that, at that moment in time, those who had been standing and waiting for his arrival, would have for-

After the Boonville High School band played some rousing music, Kennedy and his family got into one of the waiting convertibles that Harold Ray McClary and his wife, Sheilah, had provided for the occasion. During two very slow processions around the Warrick County Courthouse, Kennedy continually leaned out over the side of the vehicle to shake hands, mostly with the children who were there. Our son, Danny Bill, who was 10 or 11 years old at the time, got a firm handshake from Bobby Kennedy after Kennedy motioned for him to walk up closer to the vehicle.

After the motorcade headed towards the main highway, my husband smiled at our son and said, “You just shook hands with our next president.”

Robert Kennedy, who came to meet Hoosiers on their own terms, showed us a campaign full of sheer energy, expense and excitement. He ended up winning nine of Indiana’s 11 Congressional districts and 56 of its 92 counties.

Robert Kennedy was not a newcomer to politics when he campaigned in Boonville.

He served as chief advisor to President John F.

After John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, Bobby Kennedy continued on the same path as his older brother, serving President Lyndon Johnson. He resigned in 1964 to run for senator of New York.

His campaign for president began in March 1968 and was quickly the front-running Democratic candidate.

Kennedy won the California presidential primary on June 4, 1968. That night, Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian Arab, shot Kennedy. He died the next day.

One of Kennedy’s most controversial crusades was Civil Rights. He warned Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. that the FBI suspected some of his advisors were communists. He fielded late night phone calls from King’s wife, Coretta Scott King.

He even criticized President Johnson for not desegregating his office.

Ted Kennedy, brother of John and Bobby, eulogized his brother before he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.

“My brother need not be idealized or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life; to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it. Those of us who loved him and who take him to his rest day, pray that what he was to us and what he wished for others will some day come to pass for all the world. As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched and who sought to touch him: ‘Some men see things as they are and say why. I dream of things that never were and say why not.’”

arrick County was a big player in the coal industry.

In fact, many of the smaller communities in the county can probably thank the coal industry for their existence. There were literally hundreds of mines over the course of 100 years. The miners had to live somewhere.

Wayne Anderson didn’t grow up in Warrick County. He was born in Peoria, Ill., and grew up in central Illinois. He started working for a company that ended up being bought by Amax Coal in 1959. After three or four years of working, Wayne joined the Army and served two years.

While stationed near Washington, D.C., in November 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, leaving his regiment on high alert.

When his time in the service was up, he rejoined his company. A call from the president of Amax Coal changed his path yet again.

“I was a master mechanic,” he said. “I was a company man. The guy that was master mechanic here suddenly quit. Back then, if they asked you to transfer, it’s best you transfer. You’ll be on a list… The president of Amax called and wanted to know if I’d come down

here. He called me by name. Five years later, that all changed. You weren’t a person, you were a number.”

With mining being so prevalent in the Midwest and other portions of the country, getting parts for the machines they used wasn’t easy. Wayne said he could wait six months or more for simple parts.

“Maybe six months for a very simple part because they were so busy making new machines that they wouldn’t allot any time to make the replacement parts,” he said. “Then they’d be ridiculously priced.”

The solution was to make the parts himself. In October 1976, he quit working for the coal mines and went into business for himself, opening Mining Machine Parts.

“We didn’t make a complete machine,” Wayne said. “We just made smaller parts (replacement parts). What we turned to after about 10 years, we got into making parts for Bucyrus-Erie Blast Hole Drills. We just copied the part. We would borrow a new one from the mines, bring it in, analyze it, draw it up. That worked real good for eight or nine years, then they started shutting

those machines down.”

Nine years into his new venture, he happened into his greatest.

Mary Kay Jones was attending Lockyear Business College, working at Credit Thrift and the Townhouse Restaurant.

“That’s how I met him. He would come in for lunch. And so it began,” she joked.

They’ve been together for 36 years - mar married for 28.

Both are from Illinois - Mary Kay from Chicago and Wayne from Peoria. Mary Kay came in and helped balance the customer relations side of the business.

“He’s the brains of the operation,” she said. “I’m the customer connection. He doesn’t like that part of it. He came from a family of nine, I came from a family of seven. We have a big families and I’m used to that thing. He’s kind of laid back and doesn’t want to handle the phone call part of it and the customer part. The part that comes in handy with him is he’s the brains. He does the computer part of it, he does the drafting, he does all the engineering part of it. The stuff that’s way out of my league. But I’ll do the billing, the quoting, the customer relations. The brains is him.”

At it’s height, Mining Machine Parts employed approximately 20 people and shipped products all over the country. Locally, they did repair work, as well.

But, as coal mining made it’s steady decline, so did the business.

“It started slowing down probably 10 years

ago... It got real slow and that’s when we decided we

should probably look in a different direction,” Wayne said.

That new direction was, interestingly, not exactly related to the mining industry. Wayne said they got a contract with two large tubing service centers to take all their drops. Warrick Tubing is a much

smaller operation than Mining Machine Parts.

It currently employs six - including Wayne and Mary Kay. “We’ll get approximately two loads every six weeks - 40 tons,” Wayne said. “We bring them in, we measure them up, we test the chemicals on them. We have a machine to check them.

We give each one of them a part number, then we resell them to all the shops. We’ve sold to every state, including Alaska and even Hawaii.

We shipped into Canada, too. That’s turned into a good deal, too.”

Throughout his career, Wayne has had to learn to quickly adapt to changes in the industry. Mary Kay said that he used to spend a lot of time at the drafting table, but that has turned into CAD on the computer. He used to have a burning machine that required that he draw his designs out on long white paper by hand. Any smudges would disrupt the path of the oldfashioned burning machine and he’d have to

start over. That’s now a CNC burning machine, guided by computer.

“The mines had just started to get (computers) just before I quit, but I wasn’t involved in it,” Wayne said. “But yes, this all just came about. The tubing deal would not be possible hardly without the computer. We’ve got over 20,000 pieces of tubing, part numbers and locations. She can pull it up and send a fax over there in 10 minutes and they’ve got it ready. The computers made that possible.”

Mining has made a bit of a comeback in Warrick County, but Wayne said it won’t help his company. Too much has changed.

“Any new surface mine is going to be a dozer/truck operation,” he said. “We don’t have anything to really offer them. If their dozer gets a year or two on it, they trade it in for a brand new one before it starts to break down. There may be some underground mines go in, but that won’t help us, either. I don’t see it help-

Boonville View | 19 ing. It’ll help some people in the county, but doing that kind of work requires more people and requires more skill.”

Wayne said he’s enjoyed making both companies successful, but he’s especially proud of the families he’s been able to help along the way.

“Family is very important,” he said. “Though the business has been good, I’ve been able to help a lot of different people. That’s what it’s about.”

He has a daughter from a previous relationship, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Wayne and Mary Kay have been involved in the lives of their best friends’ triplet granddaughters since they were born.

In February, Wayne will turn 80s. He isn’t exactly slowing down. For his companies,

though, he said he made his plan 36 years ago when he married a women quite a bit his junior.

“He made a plan for the future, I just didn’t know it 36 years ago. I told you he was the brains,” she joked. “We’ll just keep it going. It’s easy for us to run now with the labor force the way it is now.

With Toyota and all the companies getting the big people. S & S and all those people are struggling to find employees, which I’m glad we’re not fighting for them like that. We’ll keep the few employees and keep going with the tubing business.”

Even though it’s not his hometown, Wayne said Boonville is now home.

“I go home to visit, but I’m always glad to see Boonville again,” he said. “It’s home.”

[In case you missed it]

Boonville earned some silver screen notoriety this fall.

In a scene in Fox’s The Resident, a doctor passes by a sign that says “Welcome to Boonville Indiana.”

After some internet research, we located the publicist for the show, who in turn put us in contact with the production team.

They gave us permission to use the artwork. They even let us move the star to the correct position in southern Indiana.

Elizabeth Klaviter, the writer of the episode, emailed and said that she attended University of Evansville and had friends in LA from Boonville, so it was a little more special to her.

Turning the

corner

What a difference six years makes.

Six years ago, there was no Johnson Park, Harold Gunn Pavilion or Warrick County War Memorial. There was, however, three dilapidated and literally falling down buildings at the corner of Second and Locust streets and turning the two more on the corner of Main and Second streets.

There were actively dying trees on the courthouse lawn, which still remained quite bare.

The square wasn’t the only beneficiary of progress. Boonville Now secured a multi-million dollar

grant that helped eliminate many blighted properties in and around the city.

In short, the city has changed. A lot. For the better.

That change has spawned business growth, as well. Six years ago, the staples were here - Miller’s, Yesterdaze, Hutchinson’s - but our newer boutiques wouldn’t have even considered calling our square home. Now they’re thriving, despite this past summer’s construction woes.

Boonville has definitely turned the corner.

id you know that the Warrick County Museum hosts a third grade tour every year for seven elementary schools in the county?

For three days in January, the museum is alive with the buzz of little voices as the children view exhibits and learn about the life of Abraham Lincoln.

a story about the life of young Abe, getting the students involved by handing them hats that identify them as Thomas Lincoln, Abe, Sally, and other members of the Lincoln clan.

Another featured speaker is Dean Dorrell, a noted Lincoln impersonator, who dresses as the adult Lincoln reflecting on his boyhood in Indiana and taking questions from the audience.

Finally in the Farm and Tool room Ray and Jann Allen explain how planting and harvesting crops were different than those of today.

In other museum news the museum also has something for adults during the winter season. It will be hosting a dinner and concert featuring The Honey Vines on Saturday, Feb. 15. Sponsored

by Woodmont Health Campus, the Italian dinner catered by Commander’s Grill will begin at 6 p.m. on the main floor of the museum with a cash wine bar. Following the meal, a concert by The Honey Vines duo will begin at 7 p.m. on the second floor.

For your spring calendar, the next museum adult event will be a return of the Brown Sisters. The venue has been moved to the Warrick County 4-H Center to accommodate a larger crowd and more space for dancing. Tickets will go on sale in March

Day of Caring

United Way’s Annual Day of Caring is Southwestern Indiana’s single largest volunteer event where more than 1,200 individuals help local nonprofits with a wide variety of projects ranging from painting and landscaping to reading to children and filing. The 27th Annual Day of Caring is set for Friday, September 18, 2020. United Way’s annual Day of Caring traditionally kicks off with a volunteer breakfast celebration. Afterwards, volunteers go to their assigned agency locations to work for the day. All volunteers receive a Day of Caring t-shirt and free admission to the Day of Caring breakfast. United Way will share a list of volunteer opportunities in late May 2020, and anyone who would like to volunteer can sign up at that time.

K-Camp Kindergarten Readiness program

Over the past year, United Way has expanded its footprint in Warrick County. Thanks to a grant from the Welborn Baptist Foundation, United Way was able to conduct a free kindergarten readiness program at Chandler Elementary School last summer. United Way believes every child should be prepared for kindergarten, ready to learn and succeed in school. However, for many families who don’t

have the money to pay for high-quality daycare or preschool, their children start kindergarten already behind their peers. United Way’s four week K-Camp program is designed to prepare kids with little or no preschool experience to thrive in their new roles as kindergartners.

Free Tax Preparation Service

United Way also serves residents of Warrick County by providing free tax preparation and filing services through its VITA program. VITA stands for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, where individuals and families with an annual household income of $56,000 or less can have their taxes preparation and e-filed at no cost.

VITA tax preparers are certified by the IRS to ensure that clients receive all eligible Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) and Child Tax Credits. In addition, clients save money by not having to pay fees associated with tax preparation. Through the VITA program, United Way helps hard-working individuals and families take advantage of their tax dollars. Many VITA clients use their tax refunds to pay bills, add

to their savings accounts, purchase homes, and make home or car repairs.

For the third year in a row, free tax preparation through the VITA program will be available in Boonville at the TRI-CAP office located at 499 W. State Road 62. Joyce Fleck, CCAP, Executive Director of TRICAP said, “TRICAP is happy to partner with the United Way by opening up our Boonville TRI-CAP office for VITA volunteers to help our mutual clients with their income tax returns. This is an incredibly valuable service needed by our community. We are thankful that the United Way continues to maintain this annual income tax preparation assistance for Warrick County area residents.”

Boonville native, Connie Pitts, will serve as the TRI-CAP VITA site coordinator. Connie and her team of volunteers will provide free tax preparation services on Tuesday afternoons, 1-4:30

hat is Rabies? Rabies is a virus that can spread to humans by animals that causes severe inflammation of the brain.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease. It can spread to people and pets if they are bitten or scratched by a rabid animal. In the United States, rabies is mostly found in wild animals like bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes.

However, in many other countries dogs still carry rabies, and most rabies deaths in people around the world are caused by dog bites.

“The rabies virus infects the central nervous system. If a person does not receive the appropriate medical care after a potential rabies exposure, the virus can cause disease in the brain, ultimately resulting in death. Rabies can be prevented by vaccinating pets, staying away from wildlife, and seeking medical care after potential exposures before symptoms start.”

According to the World Health Organization, “Rabies in animals can take a variety of forms, but a common prodromal feature is a change in behavior. Normally docile animals may become aggressive, and vice versa. Animals may next progress through a ‘furious’ phase and then a ‘paralytic’ phase, although not all rabid animals exhibit all of the stages. The appearance of nocturnal animals such as raccoons and skunks during daylight hours and without fear of humans may indicate rabies infection. It is possible for an animal, especially a wild animal, to be infected and not show any obvious clinical signs.”

Transmission information from the Indiana Board of Animal Health says, “Rabies virus is transmitted in nature through the introduction of viruscontaining saliva from an infected animal into a susceptible animal or human by way of a bite or scratch, a break in the skin, or a mucous mem-

brane. Rabies virus may be present in the saliva of animals even during the prodromal period (period between the appearance of initial symptoms and the full development of a rash or fever). Human-tohuman transmission has been reported as a result of corneal transplantation. Aerosol transmission to humans in bat caves has also been suggested.”

Rabies Vaccinations Are Required by State Law and County Ordinance Under Indiana law, all dogs, cats and ferrets older than 3 months of age must be vaccinated against the rabies virus. State law allows the use of 1-year and 3-year vaccines according to approved label directions. The vaccine must be administered by a licensed and accredited veterinarian only.

The Indiana Administrative Code Title 345 1-5-2- Required Rabies Vaccination of Dogs, Cats, and Ferrets All dogs, cats, and ferrets 3 months of age and older must be vaccinated against rabies. The rabies vaccination of a dog, cat, and ferret shall be maintained by ongoing revaccination of the animal as follows: Ferrets shall be revaccinated within 12 months of the prior vaccination.

Dogs and cats that are vaccinated with a rabies vaccine whose label recommends annual boosters shall be revaccinated within 12 months of the prior vaccination.

Dogs and cats that are vaccinated with a rabies vaccine whose label recommends a booster 1 year later and triennially thereafter shall be revaccinated within 12 months of the first vaccination and shall be revaccinated within 36 months of each vaccination thereafter. The owner of the animal is responsible for procuring the vaccinations required by this section.

3-1 - Harboring a nonimmunized dog A person who knowingly or intentionally harbors a dog that is over the age of six (6) months and not immunized against rabies commits harboring a nonimmunized dog, a class C infraction. However, the offense is a class B misdemeanor if the dog causes bodily injury by biting a person.

The Warrick County Ordinance reads in part; 131.25 Rabies Vaccine Require.

(A) No Owner shall posses within Warrick County any Animal three (3) months of age or older that is required by law to have a rabies vaccination, unless such Animal has been immunized by a license veterinarian with a rabies vaccine of a type approved by the State Board of Health and the Warrick County Board of Health. In accordance with Indiana State law, one (1) year and three (3) year vaccines may be used according to approved label directions.

(B) In no case shall more than the period prescribed on the vaccine label, whether one (1) year or three (3) years, lapse between an Animal’s rabies vaccination.

It can be a little confusing on when your dog or cat can get a three year Rabies vaccine. A kitten/ puppy or a cat/dog that has never had a Rabies vaccination cannot get a three-year rabies vaccination. Also, any animal past due for a rabies vaccination cannot get a three-year rabies vaccination either. The animal must get a one-year vaccination first and then can be revaccinated if not past due with the three-year vaccine. Please discuss any questions you may have with your veterinarian about what vaccine your pet can receive!

tips to protect your family from Rabies; • Do not feed, touch or adopt wild animals, stray dogs or cats.

• Be sure your dogs and cats are up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations. Indiana state law requires a current vaccination for all cats, dogs and ferrets beginning at three months of age. Vaccinated pets serve as a buffer between rabid wildlife and humans. Protecting your pet also reduces your risk of exposure to rabies. Pets too young to be vaccinated should be kept indoors.

• Keep family pets indoors at night. Don’t leave them outside unattended or let them roam free.

• Don’t attract wild animals to your home or yard.

Keep your property free of stored bird seed and other foods which may attract wildlife and strays.

Feed pets indoors. Tightly cap or put away garbage cans. Board up openings in your attic, basement, porch or garage. Cap your chimney with screens.

• Encourage children to tell an adult immediately, if they are bitten or scratched by any animal. Tell children not to touch any animal they do not know.

• Report all animal bites or contact with wild animals to the county health office.

• If a wild animal is on your property, let it wander away. Bring children and pets indoors and alert neighbors who are outside.

It is important to know that when an animal is exposed to the rabies virus, vaccinated animals will be quarantined for a time and unvaccinated animals will be recommended to be euthanized. If you encounter an animal that you suspect is infected with rabies, call your local health department to report it.

ust a couple years ago, Shannon Humphryes had never used a saw.

It was her husband, Wes, who insisted they should make things. He just wasn’t exactly clear as to what “things” they should make.

“We kind of set it to the side and never really did anything with it,” Shannon said. “A friend of mine posted on Facebook that she wanted somebody to cut a door hanger for her. I was like, ‘My husband can do that.’ He works construction. I told her yes before I even talked to him.”

After the first door hanger, that friend had other friends who wanted their own to paint.

Wes was doing all the cutting, but he travels frequently for work. Shannon had to step in and learn how to cut shapes.

“I’ve never used a saw in my life. Ever,” she said. “He was like, ‘You’re going to have to start doing it because these people can’t wait two or three weeks until I come back into town.’ So, I started cutting signs, too. I’m not

near as good as he is, but I’m getting better. It will suffice.”

The couple started Yes We Wood. But, they’ve kind of kept it low-tech for now. While many sign makers use a CNC machine, all of theirs are cut by hand with a jigsaw.

“We have a scroll saw,” she said. “My daughter is 10 and they taught her how to use a scroll saw at camp. She loves it. She’s so good at it! She cuts almost better than Wes and I do. She cuts little, intricate things.

I thought if she could use a scroll saw, I could use a scroll saw… No. It looked like a kindergartner did it. I practiced and practiced and never could get it.”

Yes We Wood has been set up in the 1901 Emporium for awhile now, but it’s not her only storefront. She also has products at Finders Keepers in Henderson. She keeps more of her painted and finished pieces at the 1901 Emporium, but stocks the Henderson store with unfinished DIY pieces.

In addition to wooden cutouts, Shannon and Wes also make Yardzee, a super-sized version of tabletop Yatzee.

There’s a family-friendly version, as well as an adults-only version.

“Anything anybody wants cut out of wood,” she said. “We just made a four-foot coyote for somebody. Last year, we cut six foot letters for somebody that spelled out the word joy. It was for a photographer and she wanted them for her backdrop.”

Even more impressive, most of their work is freehand. They sketch out the design and then cut it

with a jigsaw.

“I don’t like to do the letters as much because people are so picky about fonts and things and it’s hard to match what they’re thinking,” Shannon said. “If they come to us and want us to do a horse, I can do a horse. I know what a horse looks like. But if you’re like, ‘Can you do a curly T?’ I’ll try!”

They do make patterns of each of their designs, so recreating something they’ve already done is easier.

“We have gobs and gobs of patterns,” Shannon said. “Every new thing that we cut, we make a pat-

tern so we don’t have to draw it again.”

Even if they don’t have a pattern already made, Shannon said they’re more than willing to try anything.

“Every season when I’m going through our patterns to see what we have, it just floors me that someone finds something that we don’t have,” she joked. “Why did I not think of that.”

Shannon has a pretty creative background. She worked as a graphic designer for a local publication for six years before, as well. Currently, when she’s not cutting wood, she’s the marketing coordinator for ERI in Chandler.

“I come from a long line of creative people - my grandma, my mom,” she said. “My mom had a sewing business for years. My grandma could turn anything into something. From trash to treasure, seriously. Before Pinterest, before any of that stuff, she was like the original. She didn’t need anybody’s ideas.”

November and December is a crazy month for any crafty person, particularly one with a business.

Shannon said she has been working like crazy to keep both stores stocked. At her more relaxed pace the rest of the year, she said she really just enjoys cutting the shapes. She loves seeing her stock pieces and custom orders made into a beautiful piece of art.

“I paint, but it’s a work in progress,” she said.

“I don’t think I’m a great painter. When I can give someone a blank canvas and they can turn it in to something amazing, I think that’s fantastic. That’s what I love the most, especially when they’re super excited to send it to me.”

While she doesn’t offer paint parties quite yet that’s a whole logistical issue in and of itself - she

said she’d really like to get into fundraisers for various organizations around the community. Her daughter is on the lacrosse team at Boonville High School. It’s a fairly new program, so it’s in constant need of funding.

“I was telling the coach that she should do a painting party,” Shannon said. “My boards are $6 to $10, they could charge people $25 to $30, then their profit is straight that. After the paint, but the paint is less than $50, probably. It’s a no-brainer!”

These fundraisers are perfect for anyone who is tired of trying to sell things, she said.

“If you’re tired of trying to sell stuff, host a party,” she said. “It’s way more fun. Everybody gets something they want. It’s not just the rolls of wrapping paper that have 10 inches on it that you just spent $20 on.”

Shannon said she’d like to expand her business in the future.

“I would like to continue the business and expand with new ideas and maybe reach more creative people and artists who don’t know about us yet,” she said.
