The Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce conducted a new member ribbon cutting for S & S Machining & Fabrication, Inc. on Monday, Dec. 5, 2022. S&S Machining & Fabrication Inc., located at 1331 N Hwy 14 in Groesbeck. They offer custom machining, CNC machining, Fabrication, Field Welding/Boring, and deliver precision and quality. Founded in 1981, S&S Machining & Fabrication, Inc. has been serving the industry for over 30 years, delivering timely, precise, made-to-spec products for mission-critical deployment. Industries served include electric generation, oil & gas, mining, textiles, construction, and foundries. They have been growing and as you pass by on Highway 14, might notice their bright new sign on the building. To learn more visit www.sandsmachining.com
Sales manager Steve Posey said that S&S Machining and Fabrication, Inc. in Groesbeck completed a 30,000-square-foot addition, bringing the total manufacturing space to 76,000 square feet. The company produces custom prototypes and production machining, fabrication and repair, and metal casting.
S&S provides its customers with a turnkey service, Posey said.
“Normally, you order the castings from the foundry, you find a shop that does grinding, and then you find a shop that does machining,” he said.
S&S Machining and Fabrication delivers made-tospec products for industries like electricity generation, oil and gas, mining, textiles, construction and foundries.
The company was founded in 1981 and purchased by owner VJ Gupta in February 2022.
The company also celebrated joining the Groesbeck Chamber of Commerce on Dec. 5.
“Moving forward, we are working on our ISO certification and safety plan,” Posey said.
According to its website, the International Organization for Standardization develops and publishes international standards.
The certification is a universal requirement for manufacturers doing business internationally, he said. It ensures a plan is in place to track manufacturing procedures and methods.
“It helps with manufacturing because it keeps everything in line. You have to track all of your incoming materials and equipment and all that stuff. It’s pretty complex, but once you get it and start doing it, it’s not that bad,” Posey said.
He said people are coming in to write procedures for the company in January.
“We have to show three or four months of following the direction they give to us,” he said. “Then if we do that, and they come to audit us again, we go for our certification.”
The company has about 30 employees and partnered with Texas State Technical College in Waco. TSTC has a machining and fabrication associate degree, he said.
“We’re growing. We’re going to be able to employ many local people here,” Posey said. “As we grow, it will grow too, and we’re looking to hire local talent.”

Thirty-three children in Limestone Counties and thirteen in Freestone Counties are currently in the care of the Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS) or Child Protective Services (CPS). These children, who have been removed from their homes due to allegations of abuse or neglect, need advocates who will speak up for them and make certain they are safe and well.
“That’s where a CASA, a Court Appointed Special Advocate, can make a real difference,” said Taylor Rocheleau, Treasurer of the newly formed CASA of Freestone & Limestone Counties. Volunteers are at the heart of every CASA program. These are the individuals willingly donating their time to speak up for the children who need them the most.
A CASA volunteer receives ongoing professional development and develops an expansive skill set in dealing with the legal, child welfare, and education systems. “Becoming an advocate is not only a lifechanging experience, but also a resume builder,” said Linda Timmerman, Interim Executive Director of the program. “For those who may be new to the workforce, or returning after an absence, being a CASA has a lot of professional appeal; for those who may seek a career in social services, law, or child development,
there is no better training ground,” she stated. Of course, it’s the perfect volunteer role for a retiree,” she added.
Beginning in May 2019, Voices for Children Brazos, Inc., the CASA program in Bryan, TX, started serving the Freestone and Limestone area together with five other area counties. During the three and a half years the program was under VFC, an average of 67 children were served annually in the Bi-Stone area and approximately 12 volunteers were trained. In the Spring of 2022, Voices for Children met with three of those volunteers, the late Cynthia Gage, Liz McDaniel, and Linda Timmerman, and proposed that Freestone and Limestone Counties was ready for its own stand-alone program.
With the support of Voices for Children, Cynthia, Liz, and Linda started the process of putting together a Steering Committee to guide the creation of CASA of Freestone & Limestone Counties. “The support, enthusiasm, and dedication of communities and individuals within the Bi-Stone area has been overwhelming,” said Timmerman. “To the surprise of the Texas CASA and the National CASA organizations, we were able to accomplish all of the legal filings and seat a Board of Directors within the span of 3 months – a process that typically takes a year,” she added.
The Board President is Tony Adkins of Fairfield; Kelley Toney of Wortham is 1st VP, Wayne Williams of Teague is 2nd VP, Taylor Rocheleau of Mexia is Treasurer, and Christina Mims of Teague is Secretary of the Board. Other Board members are Erica Carroll of Mexia, Olivia Hays of Teague, and Spring Johnson of Wortham.
The new program has trained three new volunteers, and a second and third training session is planned for December and January. “We need 20-25 trained volunteers to handle the volume of cases in our two counties,” said Board President Adkins. A volunteer typically serves on one case for approximately 12 months. Training consists of 14 hours of in-person and 16 hours of online instruction. Adkins, who served as a volunteer with Voices for Children, remarked that the training is comprehensive and CASAs are supported on their cases by staff. “It’s a rewarding and humbling experience to serve as a CASA and either reunify a family or find a permanent adoptive family for a child or a sibling set,” he said.
There are other rolls for individuals within the new program as well. “Some people are really better suited for auxiliary roles—not the monthly commitment of visiting a child and writing a report, or the intensity of speaking to the court,” said Timmerman. “And we have many opportunities from helping out in the office, to fundraising, to planning and executing special events,” said Rocheleau.
For additional information, or to volunteer to help with CASA of Freestone & Limestone Counties, visit the Texas CASA website (www.TexasCASA. org) or contact Linda Timmerman at 903-654-8249 or casabistone@gmail.com.

Each chapter of a chamber is governed by a board of directors who advise the chapter on strategies and policies determined by the chapter's mission. The board manages day-to-day affairs and updates the chapter policies. Board members, also referred to as an executive council, are elected within each chapter. Most chapters have an acting president and CEO, for example. Members of the board are elected based on their leadership experience, business background, and ability to execute chapter goals.
In addition to a governing board of directors, a chapter will have at least one employee. Some chapters may have more than one employee and be structured like a business. Employees work to market the chapter, in overseeing memberships, and in tracking the chapter's finances.
In addition to the employees, a chapter has committees to focus on executing specific goals based on the chapter's mission — such as education, environment, or healthcare. Members of the chapter can volunteer for these committees to get more involved.
How a Chamber of Commerce Functions
A chamber of commerce chapter is made up of a dues-based membership. Each chapter offers different levels of membership, along with unique volunteer opportunities and a dues structure.
80% of respondents in a Shapiro Group survey were more likely to purchase goods or services in the future from companies belonging to a chamber of commerce.
Each chapter is designated as a 501(c)(6) corporation under the federal tax law. This means a chapter is a nonprofit entity with the authority to represent its membership in matters of policy and debate (unlike charitable organizations that do not act on behalf of members).
Dues are required by each member to contribute to the overall operating costs. In addition to dues, a chamber can raise money to cover additional operating costs by holding fundraising activities and charging fees to chamber events. These costs help the chapter stay operational since multiple businesses rely on their local chamber for networking and resources.
Influenza claims 60,000 lives per year, so you might want to consider the “flu shot” vaccine. The flu will be around until April. The big killer right now is Fentanyl, the super opioid. In 2021, 107,529 lives were lost due to the use, whether legal or illegal, of Fentanyl. We are on track to break the record here in 2022. Supposedly 70% of street drugs have a “touch” of Fentanyl. For reference, the Government data shows that deaths from motor vehicle accidents were 42,000 in 2021; deaths from firearms were 48,953 in 2021, and from COVID thus far has been 1.09 million in the U.S. and 7 million worldwide. We have had more drug-related overdose deaths than COVID deaths this year. Under no circumstances should you buy or take even half a tablet from a street dealer. Fentanyl is so popular in sales and overdoses that there has been a huge vending business selling Narcan, the drug that reverses opioid toxicity. A vending machine for overdoses. What do you say to that?

THE GROESBECK CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INVITES YOU TO JOIN US IN OUR ENDEAVOR TO BUILD A WONDERFUL COMMUNITY. WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU JOIN WITH US TO ACCOMPLISH ALL OUR GOALS. CALL THE CHAMBER OFFICE AT 254-729-3894 OR GO ONLINE TO OUR WEBSITE, WWW.GROESBECKCHAMBER.COM
“The mission of the Groesbeck Area Chamber of Commerce is to contribute to the vitality of our diverse business community and to promote the welfare of our members”
Membership brings credibility to your business. You can increase positive perception among consumers and business owners when you’re identified as a member of a chamber of commerce. Increase your visibility in the community and grow your business by advertising / sponsoring chamber events.
Connections – The business owners and operators you meet through the Chamber can be your clients and open doors to other companies to help you grown your business.
Business advocates – Your ability to influence public policy on common business problems becomes greater as more voices are added to advocate on behalf of businesses like yours.
Credibility – Membership in a Chamber of Commerce is considered a must by the public and other businesses for your business to be taken seriously and be considered a viable player in your industry.
Resources – The problems you face in business are likely shard by your fellow men and women in the business community. What better way to talk through difficulties or problems in your business
than discussing with those who are walking the same path as you.
Intelligence – You don’t have time to stay on top of all the local, regional, and state issues which could impact your business, but that’s at the heart of what we do. We keep you informed so that you can concentrate on growing your business.
Training – Whether it is a lunch and learn or a seminar on improving your company’s marketing, the Chamber hosts countless programs to help you increase your skills in all aspects of your business.
Involvement – Consumers and business owners and operators want to do business with someone who is vested in their community.
Marketing – What better way to introduce your business to potential clients than through chamber- sponsored events that attract other businesses and the public.
Standing – When you sit on business committees and eventually advance into leadership positions, you are seen by the public and other business owners and operators as an expert in your field.
Giving back – When you give back to your community, you’re helping others, and that helps the business community become stronger. Givers always Gain!
