Furry friends meet up at The Grove
Story by David McLaughlin Photos courtesy of CT residents
TheGrove has been a wonderful Comanche Trace experience lasting years for a number of us. The tradition started by taking our dogs on cart rides before happy hour. After discovering how pleasant this area was, we started meeting there almost everyday at 4 p.m.
Abby and Riley wait with great anticipation for Laci and Carolyn with her bag of treats. Sweet Cassie, Sophie, Mason and Bennett shared many great times there. They are now all furry angels in a greater grove.
We would like to pay special tribute to our close friend Dalton, whom we met at The Grove. He was a regular who always had a quick smile and an entertaining story. Other pups who come by periodically include Kodiak, Bella, Arnie, Apache, Hank and Jack. The more, the merrier.
The venue is typically very pleasant with a breeze and temps that seem to be 10 degrees more moderate than the rest of the neighborhood. It’s also extremely social with golfers headed home and walkers enjoying the surroundings.
We invite you to come by The Grove to see old friends and make some new ones.

CT Mah Jongg Club
The Comanche Trace Mah Jongg Club was formed in 2006 by a member who wanted to bring this fun game to the CT community. It quickly gained in popularity, growing to the current size of 65 members!
Mah Jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in the 19th century in China and has spread throughout the world since the early 20th century. The game is played with a set of 144 tiles based on characters and symbols. The object of the game is to match one of the various combinations of tiles from the current years Mah Jongg card.
Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. The more you play, the more challenging the game becomes.
Our group meets from 1 to 4 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the Ladies Locker Room.
The second Wednesday of the month is hosted by Cheryl Wood and Rose Leewright and is primarily considered for experienced players; however, all levels are welcomed.
The fourth Wednesday of the month is a practice session used to hone our skills. This session is hosted by Carolyn Goodloe and Sabia Milligan.
Each session encourages new members to join, and we provide experienced partners to support new members to learn the game. We have training guides that we provide to each new member wanting to learn the game of Mah Jongg.
As Comanche Trace is expanding, we hope that anyone interested in learning this fun game will reach out to one of us to learn more about us or just to join one of our sessions.

Texas 42
By Kristen Crandall
A little 42 trivia for you: This game’s history is an astounding 135 years old! In the year of 1887, in the small town of then Trapp Spring (now part of Garner located west of Fort Worth) Texas, two young schoolboys, Walter Earl and William A. Thomas, developed this trick-taking domino game. Earl, 14, and Thomas, 12, children of devout Baptists, were caught playing cards in the barn. Because of the moral standard of the day, it was considered a sin to play cards, and they were disciplined for their wrongdoing. So, they set out to find a way to play cards using dominos.
As the story goes, by fall of 1887, they had devised a four-player game using double-six dominos incorporating bidding and trumps, very close to the game we play today. Playing dominos was acceptable to their parents, and they started to teach others how to play. The game caught on and has been handed down over the generations.
Texas 42 has not only become one of Texas’ favorite pastimes, but in 2011, it was designated the Official State Domino Game of Texas.
Come join us every third Wednesday of each month and be a part of this fun history of Texas 42!
Save these dates to play:

Comanche Trace Book Club
The Comanche Trace Book Club (CTBC) is open to all club members, both men and women, which provides unique perspectives during the discussions. Currently we have about 43 members, but with seasonal travel we average about 15-20 attending the monthly discussions.
CTBC meets the third Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. at a member’s home, with each attendee bringing a beverage or snack to share with the group. The group spends about 20-25 minutes mingling then about 30-45 minutes discussing the book.
Members can attend even if they have not read the book, knowing there will be “spoilers” to the plot discussed.
In November, the group provides recommendations for books for the next year. CTBC meets in December for its annual Christmas party and to vote for the next year’s book selection.
Most books that are chosen can be checked out from the local library or available in all the usual ways — hard/paperbacks/ Audible/Kindle. The CTBC book list is normally a very good mix of all genres — fiction, non-fiction, history, etc.
Please contact Susie Geiger at smgtx1013@gmail.com for more information.

Yoga & Pilates with Kristen
By Kristen Crandall
Have you ever thought of starting something new and stepped back from it because it was unfamiliar? We all have a little apprehension when we move outside our comfort zones. Learning yoga can be like learning a foreign language, but little by little, you find your way. In yoga, anyone can practice, no matter what level of fitness or ability you have. Everybody can appreciate the benefits of this ancient discipline.
Yoga is an enjoyable way of improving and maintaining good health, but it works on much more than just the body. Conceived as a form of spiritual training, the principal of yoga is to create harmony between the breath, body and spirit. It is worth noting that the word yoga is Sanskrit for union.
When you come to the mat in Yoga with Kristen, you build wisdom and confidence, gaining awareness of your body, your breath and your thoughts as you hold poses improving your strength, stamina and determination. You’ll become more flexible, relieving stress and stiffness. All these qualities we can carry into other aspects of our lives. And the best part, we always end our yoga session immersed in full relaxation.
Take time for yourself, come join us on the mat for Yoga on Wednesdays and Fridays at 9 a.m. in the Ladies Locker Room.
If you are looking for something more, join us on Mondays at 9 a.m. for Pilates on the mat.

SCORING
WHERE IN THE WORLD?
Comanche Trace residents John and Julie Yancy recently made a trip to Greenland, and they have plenty of beautiful photos to help them remember the excursion. We thank them for sharing their memories with us!
Why Greenland? What made you want to go there on a vacation?
There were a couple of reasons for choosing this destination: John’s dad was stationed in Greenland during WWII, at the “Bluie West One” Air Force base in Narsarsuaq. Before he passed away, he had shared many memories of his time in this very remote yet beautiful location.
With our love of the outdoors and anything in nature, we tend to travel to fairly adventurous locations, and this seemed to be less “touristy” than other options, so this seemed to be a perfect fit.
Where in Greenland did you go?
We were on a small expedition ship, so we were able to see a lot of coastal Greenland in 11 days. We started on the lower East coast, made our way around the southern tip and continued about halfway up the West coast. Greenland is huge. … It’s actually the largest island in the world that isn’t a continent. It’s almost five times the size of Texas, and would cover up over a third of the continental U.S., yet its total population is less than 55,000.
Over 80% of Greenland is covered in the second largest ice sheet in the world (445 million acres and estimated to be over 400,000 years old). Traveling by boat is the best way to see multiple towns, as there are no roads connecting any of the towns/cities!
Matter of fact, the longest road in Greenland is only 35 miles long! It was built by Volkswagen years ago to test drive their cars on icy road conditions (we drove this road and learned this fun fact!).
We visited many towns, ranging from Aappilattoq, a small fishing village
of less than 100 inhabitants with no roads or cars, to Qaqortoq, a town in Southern Greenland that has been inhabited for more than 4,300 years, to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, and its population of a whopping 15,000 people, with its traditional brightly
painted homes side by side with modern office and apartment buildings.
What was your favorite part of the trip?
We are not sure we could pick one

favorite thing about the trip. … It really was the perfect combination of scenery, history, culture, activity and relaxation.
The scenery was absolutely amazing. There were miles and miles of narrow fjords that have crystal blue or green water, hundreds of waterfalls cascading down sheer cliffs. Majestic mountains and astonishingly beautiful glaciers and icebergs throughout the whole trip, but especially in Ilulissat, a town on the shores of Disko Bay. Watching the enormous icebergs floating around us was incredible. It is hard to describe
the size and magnitude of these, as some were the size of cars or buses while others were as tall as a 10-story building… and that’s just what we can see above the water, which is usually only about 40% of the actual size.
There was so much history from the Saqqaq people who lived there from 2500 BC to 900 BC, to the Vikings, most notably Eric the Red, who arrived in the early 10th century and actually gave Greenland its name in a quasi-marketing tool to get others to follow and build more settlements.
rugged beauty of island
The Vikings were able to live there because the climate was milder than today and conducive to their farming practices. Then, within 300 years, Greenland experienced a mini-ice age and the Vikings/Norseman left due to deteriorating farming conditions. The Inuit returned and continued to thrive.
We were able to explore a 14th century church in Hvalsy, see 500-yearold mummies that were frozen in an icy cave and only discovered in 1972, sip champagne in the country’s only natural hot spring, as well as visit three UNESCO world heritage sites.
There was so much culture, but especially interesting to see how the Inuit (who make up approximately 80% of Greenland’s population) and Danish cultures thrive and support each other. Up until the late 1950s, Greenland was a Danish territory, but became its own country in late 1970s.
While Greenland is self-governed, and only got their own flag in 1985, they still fall under the Danish “Realm” and are heavily supported by the Danish government. The Inuit continue to honor their heritage and traditions, with the vast majority of their lives centered on fishing and hunting for their food, clothing and livelihood.
There are three times more boats than cars in Greenland! It is not uncommon to walk into a fish market and see whale and seal available for sale.
Other typical Inuit foods include fermented shark, seal soup, muskox burgers, dried cod and reindeer sausage. We tried the sausage and dried cod, but couldn’t get up the nerve to try the fermented shark or seal soup!
Did you see the Northern Lights?
No, they are not visible during the summer, because from June to August, the sun never really sets completely. … It’s an eternal “twilight” all night. Thank goodness for blackout shades!which is the size of 66,000 football fields. and almost a mile deep, and it extends Heritage Site.

Did you see polar bears?
We did not. They are in Greenland, but mostly in the Northeast Greenland National Park, which is the world’s largest national park and encompasses 240 million acres.
Polar bears come further south on occasion, but are hunted when they get too close to any of the villages, out of safety for the residents.
We did, however, see humpback whales on two different occasions, several ring seals, reindeer, musk-oxen and a large variety of birds.
Will you go back?
John is already trying to plan a trip back, but if we go (it’s not an easy place to get to!) it will be a landbased tour in the winter months to take advantage of their winter season activities, such as dog sledding,
A couple of humpback whales “show off” for a whale watching tour.
cross country skiing and viewing the northern lights.
What’s next on your Adventure Bucket List?
John wants to go to Mongolia. Julie is voting for Galapagos. We will see who wins!
Any other fun facts about Greenland?
Greenland has hosted the World
Ice Golf Championship every March since 1999. The two-day 36-hole tournament uses fluorescent orange balls; the greens are called “whites,” and graphite shafts are not recommended as they could shatter in the cold (-58° F).
Snow blindness, frostbite and losing your ball to a polar bear have been known to be serious hazards.
Mark your calendars for next March. If you win, you will be lifted above the “crowd” on a dog sled!

Living the dream
There is a reason everyone loves the Texas Hill Country — beautiful scenery, friendly people and so many unique adventures. Eric and Suzanne Gschwind chose Comanche Trace for these reasons and more.
“We were looking for a community that included golf along with other activities to engage with our neighbors,” said Suzanne.
The Gschwinds almost bought a lot elsewhere, but on a whim called Comanche Trace Realty and met with Stacy Stavinoha, who convinced them this was the right fit for them.
Moving from the Houston area, the Gschwinds had discussed their dream home for years. They visited for a Stay and Play weekend during the Comanche Trace Tour of Homes, and that sealed the deal. After meeting with a few builders, they selected Mike Stavinoha to build their vision.
Eric commented that “during the initial stages of building, we unfortunately had to return to Houston for a few months while Suzanne was in the hospital. I cannot begin to express our gratitude for the integrity and excellent judgment of Mike during that difficult time.”

In April 2019, the Gschwinds finally moved into their dream home on Ranch View Court. The Hill Country modern style home was designed by Mickey Thompson with a bank of windows across the back allowing them to enjoy the stunning views of the golf course and beautiful Hill Country sunrises.
Inside, the open design has a nice flow for entertaining.
“We would be remiss if we didn’t mention that the best part of Comanche Trace is the people,” added Suzanne. “In the past three years, we have made friends that have truly become like family.”

Meet the Granetts
Barbara and Sam Granett have called Comanche Trace home since 2020
1. How long have you lived in Comanche Trace?
After 31 years in Austin, we moved to Comanche Trace in October 2020. We initially rented a home while our home was under renovation for 8 (long, pandemic) months.
2. What made you choose Comanche Trace?
We were seeking a smaller town with golf, and Comanche Trace checked all the boxes. We found an M. Stavinoha/Mark Eubanks home for sale while searching online and were disappointed to learn that the home was under contract.
While visiting Comanche Trace for a golf weekend, we introduced ourselves to Stacy in the real estate office and expressed our continued interest in the property just in case.
We let the house go and continued to search in other places. To our surprise, Stacy called a few months later and told us that the home was back on the market.
The combination of the M. Stavinoha Construction, Mark Eubanks Architecture and Texas Hill Country design spoke to us, and we knew that this house was the one.
3. What field of work were/are you in?
After a successful career at Compaq and Apple, including participating in the launch of the Macintosh, Barbara began her second act as an interior designer and docent at the Blanton Art Museum at UT Austin. Interior design is Barbara’s passion, and our previous home made the cover of Western Interiors and were featured in
Metropolitan Home magazine.
Sam continues his work in finance. In 2019, he sold his registered investment advisor firm but continues to run his investment banking company, Northview Advisors. The company serves middle market companies throughout the U.S.
4. What accomplishment are you most proud of?
We are most proud of the close relationships with our family. We have a big extended family, and everyone gets along and loves to be together. Our biggest accomplishments are our children. Our oldest daughter, Ellen, and her husband, Andy, started a successful Fintech company that they sold to DocuSign in July of 2020. They have two delightful children, one at UT Austin in Nursing and one at Texas A&M in the Mays School of Business. Our daughter, Spencer, and husband Rob, both professors, are PhD’s in Biochemistry and Physical Chemistry and are professors in Washington State. Granddaughter Audrey is entering first grade and Alice just turned 3.
This year, Sam was chosen for Honor Flight. The organization is a nonprofit with more than 100 locations across the U.S. Honor Flight is dedicated to transporting U.S. military combat veterans on an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to be honored for their service. This included huge celebrations in the Austin and Dulles airports with color guard, marching bands, Boy Scouts and lots of thankful citizens. In Washington, D.C., there is an honor dinner and a tour of all the veteran memorials. Each honoree has a representative of the service assigned

to them who accompanies them and handles all the details of the trip.
Originally, Honor Flight focused exclusively on World War II veterans. In recent years, Vietnam and Korean War veterans have been included. Sam is a graduate of United States Military Academy West Point and received the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars for valor for his service in Vietnam.
5. What hobbies do you both enjoy?
Our hobbies include travel, golf, cooking and gardening.
6. Where is your favorite vacation spot? Where was your most recent vacation?
Barbara’s favorite place is Italy. We honeymooned there attending a cooking school in Tuscany. Sam’s favorite is Africa on Safari. We spent this late July and August in Norway, Fjordland.
7. What was your first job?
After graduation, Sam’s assignment was a platoon leader and General’s Aide in Berlin, Germany. Barbara completed a degree in Economics at UT and was hired by Exxon Office Systems in marketing. At the time, Exxon was quietly experimenting with 20-plus technology companies.
8. How did y’all meet and where was your first date?
We met in Dallas while playing racquetball. Our first date was a Paul Simon concert. A full year passed before we dated again. Fast forward another year, and we married on Valentine’s Day in 1992.

Meet CoCo
Chocolate Lab makes her home with the Medovich family
Hello everyone!
I am CoCo Medovich, a Chocolate Lab, who lives in Comanche Trace with my dad John, mom Lisa and brother Josh. You may have seen me walk my dad around Comanche Trace, or have seen me with my family at the Tap House. I am humbled and honored to be the featured pet in this publication.
As my mom told me, be brief when talking about yourself and let others ask for more. So I’ll give you the “Top 10 Things to Know about Me” to get started!
1. I am a Virgo (loyal and down to earth). I was born on September 9, 2021, in San Saba, Texas, and my biological parents are Daisy and Bubba.
2. My registered name is “Mademoiselle CoCo Marie de Comanche Trace” … but please call me CoCo.
3. For the first couple of months, I thought my name was “CoCo NoNoNoNoNo,” since I liked getting
into everything!
4. I am dating the boy next door, Chance, a Great Pyrenees. Chance can barely get through the gate to my yard.
I get so excited that I pounce all over him. Mom and dad tell me I need to play a little harder to get!
5. There was only one time I was home alone in my kennel, and I cried the entire 40 minutes! Mom said never again… and now I have my own babysitter, Samantha Rue-Las. The kennel is now history and packed up in our attic.
6. I have my own room and big girl bed, but mom and dad have slept with me since the day they brought me home. Gosh, they must be scared to sleep by themselves without me!
7. I love to bury myself in hot towels as soon as they come out of the dryer.
8. I get over 100 kisses and hugs a day!
9. I may be a girl, but I love “Bourbon and Cigar Night” with the boys on the patio.
10. My family said I healed their hearts when they brought me home. Their past pets, Chloe and Wigeon, are now living on the heavenly Rainbow Bridge.
I am very glad you got a chance to know a little bit about me, and I cannot wait to meet you!

By Kellie Early (16 years living my best life in Comanche Trace)
How many times have you said to yourself, “I should have them over” or “I would really like to get to know my neighbor better.”
What are you waiting for?
I love to entertain and cook, but not everyone does. So, you can easily make a simple appetizer or dessert and head to the Pinnacle Grill at Comanche Trace for dinner. I chose to make an appetizer and open a bottle of wine and make reservations for dinner at the club.
Life is short — just do it!
