C heri Rice, owner of Paw-Paw’s Catfish House in Bastrop, has been cooking up family memories with her menu for 10 years. Her homemade onion rings were voted Best Onion Rings in Bas trop County in the 2022 Bastrop County’s Best contest.

“ We are so excited,” she said. “We work hard every day to try and make people’s experience amazing. I am so thankful for our customers that keep us doing what we do.”

W hat she does is recreate family fish fries from when she was growing up, going fishing and hunting with her Paw-paw and Maw-maw.

“ My husband and I have worked hard to create a place here in Bastrop that people will enjoy coming to,” she writes on PawPaw’s website at pawpawscatfishhouse.com. “The walls are decorated with pictures of my family doing what they loved most — fishing.”

E verything on the menu is hand battered to order, which is what makes Paw-Paw’s onion rings so special.

“ They are hand cut and breaded with our secret recipe to order,” she told Bastrop County’s Best Magazine. “Nothing is frozen or remade. They are also served with chipotle ranch, which gives them a little kick.”

C hris McEwan and wife Jennie Olsen-McEwan’s Tough Cookie Bakery was voted Best Organic Foods in the Bastrop County’s Best contest this year. The bakery specializes in vegan and vegetarian, with many gluten-free options, and uses the high est-quality organic and local ingredients available.

“ We make everything but the gluten-free in the house,” Chris McEwan said.

T hat includes the ice cream, which has a dairy-free option. T he McEwans arrived in Bastrop in 2011 with the equipment they needed to open a bakery. It was all consumed by flames in the Bastrop Complex fires.

“ We had to start from scratch, working with the farmers’ markets and building it all back up,” McEwan said. “We have a dedicated customer base that has supported us through the pandemic. It’s why we stay in business.”

Hunter’s Crossing Apartment Homes is the newest apartment complex in the Bastrop area, property manager Courtney Haney said. It is also the rst time winner of one of the newest cate ories in the Bastrop County’s Best contest, having received the most votes for Apartment Complex. Haney was ecstatic.

“This means everything,” she said. “We take a lot of pride in the community. We have a great sense of community here.”

G&C Printing is a family-owned and -operated business that has been serving Bastrop County for 38 years. The print shop was recently voted Best Printing, a new category in Bastrop County’s Best contest.

Denise Altum runs the business for her parents, Charlene and Gene Briggs, who are still active in the shop. She attributes the win to the fact that they offer reasonable prices and a uick turnaround.

“We do the best we can for people,” she said. “People seem to like that.”

Knowing that people recognize the shop and voted for it as the best in the county makes her feel good, Altum continued.

“Sometimes, you get so busy, you don’t always feel appreciated,” she said. “When something like this happens, you know what you’re doing is appreciated. We appreciate all the votes and are just glad we were recognized for trying to be the best.”

Another new category, Tree Service, went to Lost Pines Tree Service, which has been in business for more than 18 years. Laura and Eric Argumedo own the business. Laura attributes its success to the reputation her husband has built in the community.

“People call Eric to climb threes that others won’t,” she said. “He’s not only the owner, he’s the climber, and he loves what he does.
