Among the returning players on offense for Alvin are senior running backs Day shawn Peterson and Cole Erndt, linemen Finn Madding, Yahir Meza and Bradley Eernisse and receiver Joseph Palermo. Peterson rushed for 1,200 yards last sea son and earned all-state second team hon ors, while Erndt will be entering in his third year in the Alvin backfield and Madding was a first team all-district selection in ‘21 as“Dayshawnwell. had a really good offseason, putting on about 15 more pounds of mus cle,” Gage said. “Cole is a three-year starter

Yellowjackets look to build on last year’s multi-win season
By Stephen Collins Sports Editor
Coming off a much improved 4-6 season in 2021, James Gage was also pleased by the electrified approach his Alvin Yellow jackets took to the practice field once spring ball started last May. An approach that mixes in perfectly with the second-year head coach’s message to his team about “not being satisfied“ with the program’s first multi-win season in four years.“The kids were really excited. They had a real good offseason and the reward for that was to see them put that into use during spring ball,” Gage added. “We have some thing to build off of, but at the same time, we don’t want 4-6 or .500 to feel normal around here. Among the team goals we dis cussed was being .500 or better and making the playoffs. We want to raise the bar for theThekids.”Jackets will be carrying only a 2025 senior contingent this fall, which means more sophomores will likely see a lot of playing time, as well. “We’re going to be real young,” Gage said. “A lot of sophomores (who were freshmen during spring ball) had to grow up. After spring ball, we were able to clear some things up about who’s going to be able to play on Friday nights and who will be playing on Thursday nights.”

“I feel like we have the right people in place. We just don’t have a lot of depth. As long as we don’t have to dig into that depth, we will be okay. If we have some injuries, we’re going to have to move some guys around and get creative.
6 Fall SportS Magazine for us. “Palermo’s not a big kid or a fast kid, but he does a good job at getting open, so we got to find a way to get the ball to him.”
Alvin Quarterbacks, Fullbacks & Coach
“We have to find a way to beat a Dawson or Strake Jesuit, if we want to take that next step.”
“We played all three (road) games at Crump last year and drew the short straw again. We tried to make it our home stadium last year and we will try again to do so again. Eight of our 10 games are either going to be at Memorial or Crump. Our kids know they’re going to have to show up and play good every Friday night. They know what it’s like to be playing with a playoff spot on the line in week 10 and now they want to take that next step.
YELLOWJ ACKETS
“I’m anxious once the season rolls around to see what it looks like and what the carry over will be. Last year, I was questioning how many of our kids had really bought in to what we’re doing. Now you can probably go around the room and get a yes from all the kids about that.”

Junior Brayden Griffin, who played on the junior varsity last sea son, enters 2022 as the starting signal caller, Gage said with Ryan Munson serving as the back-up quarterback.
Defensive returnees included lineman Eddie Parker, lineback ers Darius Wilson and Trevor Yarbrough and Maison Garcia, Gio Gutierrez and Hunter Kneifel in the secondary.

The Mustangs were the first of three new non-district opponents on Alvin’s slate for the fall. Cleveland came to Memorial on Sept. 2 for the Jackets’ actual home opener, while Gage’s crew travels to Beaumont Sept. 9 to face United at 7 p.m. Realignment brought no changes to Alvin district wise with the Jackets still playing in 23-6A, starting with a road game with Alief Taylor on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. Alvin will play the Alief trio of Taylor, Elsik (Oct. 21) and Hastings (Oct. 27) all at Crump Stadium for the second straight year and also Pearland at “The Rig” (Oct. 7), while the league home games come against Strake Jesuit (Sept. 30), Shadow Creek (Oct.14) and Pearland Dawson (Nov. 4). With the exception of the Hastings 6 p.m. start, kickoff times for the remaining contests are 7 p.m.
“I’ve said before that from top to bottom, we have one of the toughest districts in the state,” Gage said. “You could put several of the teams in 23-6A in another district and they would win it. Just having them all here makes it a real challenge.

“I can tell there’s a real excitement about this year and I think it’s attributed to so many people getting opportunities. We’re going to miss those guys who graduated, but that was last year’s team. This year’s team belongs to these seniors. They have accepted the challenge and done everything we have asked them to do.”
“I thought that group made a whole lot of progress during the spring. I think that coach Middleton coming in brought a lot of experience to the staff. He played receiver in the NFL for five years and I think our receivers benefited from his experience.”
“We have moved positions with him (O’Neal), so we expect him to have a really big year,” Hall said. “Lucas, who’s a senior,
Coming off another impressive playoff run in 2021, which featured advancing to the regional semifinals, the Manvel Maver icks look to make another deep postseason run in 2022.
“It’s always nice when you have a guy re turning at quarterback,” Hall said. “We lost all four running backs, so it’s been wide open here. They’re been competing real hard. We also lost all of our varsity receiv ers, but we have a good group of guys who are stepping up.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Maga zine even ranked the Mavs at the No. 8 spot in their Class 5A Division I preseason poll and also projected Kevin Hall’s squad to capture the 10-5A Division I crown.
Quarterback Kaeden Smith (6-1, 190, 4.6) and center Devin Davis (6-3, 335) are the lone veterans from 2021 with both Davis and Malcolm Fields (6-3, 265) also forming a solid combo on the offensive line.
The lofty ranking comes despite Manvel losing a staggering 41 lettermen to gradu ation during the offseason. However, Hall sees the massive departures as opening another window for his Mavs entering the 2022“Wecampaign.lostour(all-state) punter and holder and about 20 starters overall,” Hall said.
“What that means, though, is there’s a whole lot of opportunity around here to get on the field and make plays. We have a ton of new faces. “It was a really fun spring, because when you have so many young people you have to get ready for Friday night football, it makes it more of a challenge. The kids have grown up a lot and we still have a long way to go, but we will get there.

Cornerback Jalen O’Neal (6-2, 185, 4.5) is the lone holdover back for Hall on de fense, but the Manvel coach has also listed linebacker Kenyon Armstrong (6-0, 235, 4.8), Kaleb Blanton (6-2, 225, 4.9) and Quentin Lucas (6.0, 215, 4.8) as players to watch along with defensive linemen Jalen Charles and Kevin Haley and defensive back Jamari Williams.

10-5A underwent a few changes due to realignment with both defending state champion Katy Paetow and Hightower jumping to 6A. Magnolia High School and Magnolia West joined Fulshear in moving to 10-5A to make it a nine-team district set-up. Manvel opens district play with Angleton, Sept. 9 at Freedom Field.
“Brad (Butler) has done such a wonderful job with his kids over there and Westbrook is another great program,” Hall said. “They’re both 6A schools and we’re throwing the kids in the fire right off. But I knew going in, that we had to get our team ready for district.
The Mavs went 10-3 last season and shared the 10-5A crown with Paetow and Hightower and also handed the state champion Panthers their lone defeat this season. After going 7-1 in district play, Manvel posted playoff wins over Beaumont United (56-0) and Plugerville Weis (41-31).
moved away and came back last January. He’s at the linebacker/ defensive end spot. We have a real young secondary with several juniors starting. The guys knew the opportunities that were pre sented to them in January and they’ve been like sponges. They’ve soaked up everything.”
“We also scrimmage Clear Creek, another 6A school. Those three games will help us get ready for district.”
The Mavs receive an immediate test when they face AISD fellow program Shadow Creek on the gridiron for the first time ever in week one, followed by a visit to Beaumont Westbrook on Sept. 1. The game will also be televised by Valley Sports, which broadcasts one national high school football game a year to go along with its college and pro football slate.

SHARKSSHADOW CREEK 2022 Shadow Creek Varsity Team Fall SportS Magazine 27
At this time last year, Shadow Creek head coach Brad Butler’s squad was attempting to answer a few question marks entering the 2021 season. Still, the young Sharks delivered a solid 9-3 campaign, capturing the 23-6A football crown and advancing to the area playoff round.Turn the page to 2022, though, and Shad ow Creek has reloaded with 39 returning lettermen with six veterans coming back on offense and seven on the defensive side of the“Weball.definitely have a good nucleus com ing back,” Butler said. “We not only got guys coming back to build on both offen sively and defensively, but also on special teams with two good kickers.
“Duke and Tylik finished off last season strong and give us a strong 1-2 punch,” Butler said. “Having a senior quarterback back is always a good thing. Someone who has been through it and taken quite a few snaps. We’re excited about the season he couldTylikhave.and Jacob carried the load in the backfield with Felix Buchanan and Justin Qualls. We feel this is one area where we have a lot of depth.”
Butler is equally excited about what his receiving corps of Josh Best, Caleb Wash ington and Jacorey Watson (6.0, 165, 4.5) bring to the table along with Demeco Har vey, Garrison Burns, Christian Seriale, Dane Jones and Ashton Jones.
What a difference a year makes.
Quarterback Duke Butler (6-1, 175, 4.5) shined in his initial year under center, throwing for 1,922 yards and 29 touch downs, while running back Tylik Burton (5-9, 170, 4.7) rambled for 760 yards and eight TD’s on the ground. Jacob Washing ton (6-1, 180, 4.6) also averaged 6.5 rush ing yards after coming back from an injury late in the season.
Returning veterans give Sharks high expectations in 2022
“The key for us is staying healthy. Dur ing the spring, we had a few guys get ding ed up and some of them have been trying to stay healthy over the summer. Having a few injuries here and there can change the complexion of your football team.”

“We will open district play with them and it’s going to be real tough right off the bat.”
Shadow Creek opens their season with a first ever meeting with AISD neighbor Manvel on Aug. 26, while hosting Clear Springs, Sept. 2 and traveling to FCU Stadium in Cypress to face Bridge land on Sept. 10 to complete non-district play.
“We went through a bit of the injury bug here during the spring, but if we can stay healthy here, it gives us a chance,” Butler said. “You’re only as good as the five guys up front.”
In the secondary, the Shadow Creek boss said the “sky’s the lim it” for LSU commit and DB anchor Maurice Williams (6-2, 185, 4.5), who will be moving to safety this time around. Williams is joined by Brian Nelson, Zyran King-Brooks, Corey Swiney, Jay vion Anderson and Aaden Benjamin.
SHARKSSHADOW CREEK the bit and we’ll just put them out there and see what they can do.”
While the Sharks have been projected by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine to repeat as 23-6A champs, Butler sees the en tire district field as being improved this fall.
“For the kids and the fans, (The Manvel game) is obviously about bragging rights,” Butler said. “I think both (Manvel) coach (Kevin) Hall and I want to put our best foot forward and keep our teams healthy. These three game will be help us get ready for district.”
Manning the offensive line station for Butler and company will be the senior crew of Tyson Kestner (6-2, 270), Marcus Kemp (61, 290), Marquise Yancy (6-4, 305), Stewart Harris (6-3, 295) and Jayce Mayberry (6-1, 280).

The game with Manvel will also be broadcasted by Valley Sports, which annually airs one national high school football game to complement their college and pro lineup.
“Robert was very active last season, also picking off some balls and returning them for touchdowns,” Butler said.
“The overall versatility of this group is real impressive,” Butler said. The duo of sophomore Aiden Bui and senior Malakai Robinson also bring a solid 1-2 punch for the Sharks in the kicking game.

“You can’t have an off week here or you will end up with a loss,” he said. “Coach (B.J.) Gotte is coming off a state championship at Katy Paetow and should do great things at Pearland as well.
“Bui had a solid summer in all the camps and Robinson kicked for us in the past,” Butler said. “It will be real fun to watch those two. Between them, we feel confident in the kicking game.”
On the other side of the ball, the trio of Theo Randle (6-2, 260, 4.9), Terance McCants (6-4, 225) and Zion Taylor (6-2, 230) lead the way on the defensive line along with Michael Craney II and Blake Hughes. Robert Edmonson (6-1, 200, 4.7), who turned in a 72-tackle campaign, brings the most experience at linebacker and will be joined on the inside by Nick King (5-11, 190) and Efren Figueroa (5-9, 175). Sean Gilbert (6-1, 180) and Scott Koumado (6-2, 185) will occupy the outside linebacker spots.

While the Pioneers are playing with all underclassmen the first time around, Garza noted that he already has “a few kids trying to step up and be leaders.”

Garza’s return to AISD as a coach included a stint at Harby Junior High, followed by joining both Kirk Martin’s staff as an assistant at Manvel High School in 2008 and Brad Butler’s staff at Shadow Creek High School in 2016.
