Santa on the Streets

A Decatur Christmas tradition is entering its third decade of bringing smiles to kids and adults alike.

Each December, the Decatur Fire Department escorts Santa to all the neighborhoods in town as part of its Santa on the Streets program.

Current Fire Chief Deroy Bennett brought the tradition over from Lewisville after seeing the success of the program there. At Lewisville Fire Department, Santa would ride around on top of a truck and toss candy canes to children as it drove through the neighborhoods.

“The very next year, I suggested we do it here after I saw the results,” Bennett said. His plan was to “amp it up a little.” They took a porch swing and attached it to the back of a ladder truck for Santa to sit in. Bennett also brought a camera and took kids’ photos with Santa,

which parents could then pick up the next week at the police department.

He’d regularly end up with 800 to 900 photos.

“It was the most timeconsuming, painful thing I ever put myself through, but it was also very rewarding because there were just a lot of people then who didn’t have money to do that or have cameras,” Bennett said, pointing out this was a time before camera phones became popular.

The event has evolved over the years. Santa gave up his porch swing to a ride in a motorized cart, always driven by Bennett himself. Santa will hand out candy canes to kids and pose for photos now taken by the parents. The visits have grown from four to five nights.

It takes a team to pull off the event. A fire truck with lights and sirens will lead the convoy in order

24 EVENT SPOTLIGHT

to alert residents of Santa’s arrival, and “blocking” vehicles will travel just ahead and behind Santa to keep the jolly old elf safe on his rounds.

Plenty of funny or unusual things have happened over the years. One year, a man who came out of his house cursing and yelling at the fire trucks was arrested after Bennett smelled alcohol on his breath.

“Had him right beside the Santa cart in handcuffs,” he said with a laugh.

Because the visits often occur around children’s bath time, Bennett said plenty of naked children have come running out the door.

“We’ve had them jump out of the tub and run out the door and mom not catch them,” he said.

The fire department has been doing this so long, he pointed out, than many of the kids who ran out excitedly to greet Santa are now the parents taking photos of their

own kids with Santa.

But it’s not just kids who have been excited to see Santa coming down their streets. Grown adults will often be so excited they are shaking, Bennett said.

Several people in town will schedule their social group’s Christmas party for the night Santa on the Streets will be in their neighborhood just so they can get a photo with Santa.

In addition to Santa on the Streets, the Decatur Fire Department since 2007 has also hosted a Breakfast with Santa event at the fire hall. The breakfast is usually held the Saturday before Santa on the Streets begins and includes a pancake breakfast and a visit with Santa.

Bennett hopes the fire department will continue its Christmas tradition for years to come.

“It’s an adventure every year, but it’s a blast,” he said.

LBJ NATIONAL GRASSLANDS

The roughly 20,302 acres that make up the LBJ National Grasslands in northern Wise County offers a recreation area at Black Creek Lake, which includes camping, picnic tables, restrooms and a boat ramp. TADRA Point offers one of the best trail riding opportunities in the area and also features a campground. The 75-mile LBJ Multi-Use Trail can be used for horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking and has campsites along the way. Valley View Campground has 15 developed campsites, a restroom, water for horses and a pavilion with a grill. Some areas may require a fee for use.

Other areas of the Grasslands are perfect for hunting whitetailed deer, hogs, turkey and waterfowl. The mixture of pasture land and heavily wooded areas makes the perfect habitat for a variety of game. The landscape is also dotted with dozens of ponds and smaller lakes, with many containing bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish.
