Jefferson Salutes America
Jefferson is gearing up for their annual 4th of July celebration. “Jefferson Salutes America” will kick off at 6 p.m. on Monday, July 4. Always starting downtown at Otstott Park, the line-up for the children’s parade will begin at 5:45 p.m. The event will get underway at 6 p.m. with a welcome, invocation and the Pledge of Allegiance. The parade will follow immediately thereafter. The Home Ice Cream Championship will be judged at 6:15 p.m. and the annual Cake and Pie Auction will commence at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Friends of Jefferson Carnegie Library.

Area youth groups also setup booths around the park to fundraise for their fall activities. A band concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band. Trophies will be presented to the Ice Cream winners during intermission at 8 p.m. The Quacker State 500 Duck Race will roll out at 9 p.m. prior to the annual Fireworks Fantazamagoria at 9:15 p.m. Otstott Park is located at 210 West Lafayette Street in Jefferson. Jefferson Salutes America is a family friendly event that harkens to another time and celebrates the incredible community that calls Jefferson home.

Growing Up Jefferson Hooky for Beginners
By John T. Taylor “If a Tree Falls in the Forest, and No One is There to Hear It...” It had been a long year. Boredom had set in. Kindergarten, with all its promise way back in September, had just become a routine of story time, recess, arts and crafts, and refreshments. It was only half-day, but four consecutive hours of anything can make a five year old look for a better way. I would say my thoughts had taken a flight of fancy, but I’m not sure my fancy had come in yet. Anyway, it was spring, the cold days were over, and our dress rehearsal for next year’s Big School was nearly at an end. There were still plans to be made, however, in an attempt to break this monotony called education. Our teacher, Mrs. Eloise Gamble, conducted kindergarten in a two story build-
ing behind her house. It probably had been a garage apartment at one time, but that floor plan made for an easy conversion to a classroom. It had a kitchen, bathroom, and a large living area which accommodated the twelve or so small bodies that composed our class. Mrs. Gamble’s home was the red brick house located on East Jefferson Street, just east of its intersection with South Alley. The two storied building where we began our collective journey to “better living through education” still stands today where it did in 1953.I’m not sure if that is a tribute to mid-twentieth century craftsmanship or, perhaps, a shrine to the keen minds that developed behind those hallowed walls. The large vacant lot that occupies that corner was our playground. We simply called it The Yard. It

Antique Tractor Show Takes Over Jefferson’s streets will be closed to traffic to accommodate antique tractors, trucks and stationary engines Friday and Saturday, Sept. 16-17, 2022. More than 100 tractors will be on show in downtown Jefferson. The event will also include Slow Tractor Race, Tractor Parade, Stationary and Working Exhibits and a Swap Meet. This is a great event for the entire family. The event is free of charge for exhibitors, swap meet vendors and the public. Early registration for participants will be on Friday, Sept. 16, 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. on the corner lot next to the General Store. Saturday registration for participants will be from 7 – 10 a.m. The Show opens to the public at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and will close at 2 p.m.. The Tractor Slow Race will be at 11 a.m., and the Tractor Parade will be at 1 p.m..

20th Annual AHRMA Vintage Motocross It is time to celebrate Diamond Don’s 20th Annual AHRMA National Vintage Motocross Sept. 7-11, 2022 at Diamond Don RV Park & Event Center located one mile from Jefferson, Texas. The weekend will be full of motocross legends racing on old bikes, including several inductees to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame. More than 1000 people attend this annual event from all over the world. This event is the largest vintage motocross race in the country and longest running AHRMA national. Here is your chance to visit with and race against some of your idols: Barry Higgins, Steve Wise, Brad Lackey, Trampas Parker (local Louisiana boy), Trey Jorski, and Guy Cooper. Kevin Windham is the 2022 event
legend and will be riding an XR200cc “Windham Rocket” during the Bubba Dennis, BA Motorsports sponsored, XR200 Texas Thumper Throwdown, racing during intermission on Saturday and Sunday. The 1981 XR200cc was donated by Jere & Tracey Kellough; Bubba Dennis will rebuild the motor and Kenny Vaughn will do the suspension, frame and wheels. Better get your bikes ready for this race. Our conspiratorial discussions went undetected. During our refreshments break, we plotted every detail for our escape, for this was not to be some haphazard attempt. For several days, over Kool Aid and Vanilla Wafers, we got our timing perfected. This, in itself, was remarkable since neither of us could tell time that well and didn’t have access to a watch. Our meticulous planning led us next to walking off The Yard, just to make sure our escape route was not obstructed. We deduced our best chance was to the south, primarily because Bill’s aforementioned house was to the north. Little fools we were not, and, later, Steve McQueen in The Great Escape would have nothing on us. We were careful, also, not to leave a paper trail. While you may say that’s because we couldn’t write, I say that was exercising extreme caution. One final limiting factor was the fact we were not allowed to cross the street. That was solved by our discovery of a “hidey hole”, which actually was a step-down for the sidewalk on the corner of The Yard. That step-down consisted of a concrete step to a street level concrete platform. That four square foot surface would accommodate us nicely, being about two feet below ground level and hiding us from anyone looking in that direction. The big day came. It was recess. We
would figure prominently in the scheme we were about to develop. Public school kindergarten had still not caught on in Texas, at least not in 1953 Jefferson. Therefore, in order to cultivate our young minds, our parents had to rely on the availability of private school. That was not quite as exotic a concept as it is today. It certainly could not have been expensive, as none of us came from wealthy families. We didn’t wear uniforms. It was co-educational and non-denominational, and vouchers were fifty or so years away from conception. We were part of the post-World War II baby boom, and our parents wanted a better way for their children. School was nothing new for me as my mother was a second grade teacher and learning was sacrosanct in our house. I will have another story about that to share with you later in the book. This was probably more about socialization and learning the lessons that come with that interaction. This particular interaction led me to my fellow classmate and lifelong friend, Bill Ford. Bill lived on the same block as the kindergarten, at the SE corner of South Alley and East Delta. That house looks pretty much the same today as it did then. Bill, in addition to being my classmate and friend, also became my co-conspirator in The Great Escape, or Hooky for Beginners.

we trudged back to class, ready to face the music from our teacher and receive adoration from our envious classmates. We walked in the room, and got ...nothing. Not even a glance our way from anybody. To say we were a couple of disappointed rebels is an understatement. Looking back, I’m pretty sure Mrs. Gamble knew where we were the whole time and was watching us from her second story perch. She was certainly not one to allow pupils in her charge to wander off. As I found out several years later, when she was my high school librarian and study hall monitor, people much more devious and experienced than Bill and I were never able to put much past her. And I’m sure she didn’t mention this to my parents. My mother, especially, was not one to miss an opportunity to teach me a life lesson or to
strolled nonchalantly towards the corner, our heartbeats increasing with anticipation that all our planning was about to pay off. We got away cleanly, and we watched the other children heading back inside. Soon, someone would come looking for us, shouting our names in vain as we crouched in our corner, enjoying our success, and ignoring their pleas. But, no one came. Not only did we not hear sirens, see fire trucks or policemen mounted on horseback, we didn’t even see Mrs. Gamble come back to look for us. But, at first, it didn’t matter. There we were—crouched dangerously close to the street and loving every minute of our new “devil may care, throw caution to the wind” attitude. Probably ten minutes into our adventure, we realized this was where our planning had ended. And we might be missing story time. Reluctantly,

a Dual Sport Adventure Ride through the back roads of Marion and Harrison Counties. All street legal modern dual sport bikes are welcome. Proceeds from this event will benefit Jefferson Adopt-ACop. Cross country and trials are on Friday (with the Diamond-Huffman Modern Trials Support Class, sponsored by Jay Huffman, Huffman Restorations). Saturday features vintage racing with post-vintage on Sunday; and the 100cc/200cc Revenge Races during intermission sponsored by BA Motorsports and Northwest Maico CZ. The revenge races are the coolest to watch. Come see international champ, Trampas Parker, race against his son Ricky, and brother Heith. They usually end up placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd for a Parker family trifecta. But with Windham in the race, anything can happen. Trampas made history as the first America to win two World Motocross Championships, one in 1989 and one in 1991. The wide, flat grassy pit area offers great viewing of the racetrack that runs through the pasture and into the piney woods. Diamond Don has created a natural terrain grass track reminiscent of the early 70’s. Vendors and concessions available at the track. In 1999, he finished the outdoor season ranked second. He was 7th on the alltime 250SW Showdown wins list; and was 5-time 250MX Runner-Up; 3-time SX Runner-Up; and had two 250MX 3rd place wins. He will be a sight to see! Diamond Don Rainey, event promoter, started racing in 1968. By 1973, Rainey was competing in AMA national events and raced in the first night race at the Houston Astrodome. He retired in his 30’s, but re-started the second round of his racing career in 1996. He pulled his old motorcycles out of the garage and restored them. He races his motorcycles at vintage events around the country. Today, he still builds his own bikes and races in the AHRMA 70+ class on his 1974 Honda Elsinore or a Brad Lackey look-alike 400cc CZ. Diamond Don and crew will be making this a special 20th anniversary event. On Wednesday afternoon, there will be a golf outing to an area golf course. It will be a four-some scramble and all are welcome. Proceeds will benefit Jefferson Railway and Wetlands Foundation to support youth activities in Jefferson. On Thursday morning, there will be

Pioneer Days Set to Return
Plans are underway for the 2nd Annual Pioneer Days on Labor Day weekend in Jefferson. According to Opera House Theatre Players board members, the idea was generated when they realized that bringing the long-beloved, internationally acclaimed group, the Sons of the Pioneers, to Jefferson would likely benefit the community as a whole if it was fashioned as a day-long event prior to the concert. Plans are being formulated to include a Pioneer Days Parade on Saturday, Sept. 3, focusing on the earliest days of Jefferson with old-fashioned wagons, and carriages as well as equestrians in costumes of the pioneer days when the tow was first founded along the Big Cypress River. A repeat performance by the Sons of the Pioneers is still in the works as of press time.
Later on that day, a cowboy dance, a re-creation of an old shoot-out, and various enter-tainments such as a cowboy singer/story-teller, a trick roper, square/ folk dancers, and a farm animals petting enclave among other things is being planned. Those who wish to hop on the “pioneer wagon” can do so by donating to the Opera House Theatre Players, a 501(c)3 organization through their website at www.
