Every small town has that one place that will make you feel at ease from the moment you step through its front doors until you leave. In Fayette County, there is one such restaurant that has produced a hometown atmosphere; and it has become so popular a stop that its clientele base crosses city lines and pulls in hungry patrons from all over.

Murphy’s Steakhouse, hailing from the small town of Winchester, is a beloved establishment here in Fayette County.

Often described as a quaint hole‐in‐the‐wall restaurant, Murphy’s attracts locals, travelers, and all those in between who are searching for a pleasant dining experience.

The four walls that Murphy’s Steakhouse calls home were originally built in 1913 by C.H. Schmidt, an immigrant from Germany. He came to America in 1890, hoping for a fresh start in a new place.

He married his wife, Anna Schulze, the very next year and they opened their very first general store together. Eventually, when the popularity of their business outgrew the first store, they created the building in which Murphy’s Steakhouse now resides. The rustic feel of this diner’s exterior continues on into the interior, giving it a cozy character and a sense of consistency. However, this building not only houses Murphy’s Steakhouse, but the Winchester Post Office as well, which is still in operation today.

Georgianna, the current owner of Murphy’s Steakhouse and Winchester Postmaster, has upheld the reputation that the restaurant founder, Murphy, established many years ago. She purchased the store in 2005, nearly 17 years ago, and has been hard at work making it a destination that people want to experience over and over again. And in conjunction with that dream, she has also kept the post office located in the front of the store running to ensure that local homeowners have easy access to a necessity.

When she first took over the store, Georgianna wanted to keep the price of the food affordable, knowing that most of her customers had to travel a ways to get to the steakhouse. Keeping prices low unfortunately meant that there was not much room in the budget for advertising. In spite of this, the steakhouse rose in popularity simply by word of mouth. Under Georgianna’s guidance and the support of her recurrent customers, the steakhouse has flourished and received high praise from people both near and far because they recognize the effort she and her staff have put into the establishment.

“I would like to say thank you to every customer for getting us this far and keeping us here,” Georgianna expressed.

This year, Murphy’s Steakhouse won a variety of awards in the Reader’s Choice Contest, including Best Salad Bar, Best Steak, Best Onion Rings, Best Restaurant Worth the Drive in Fayette County, and Best Restaurant Overall in the county. But, this isn’t the first time that the steakhouse has won these awards; they have consistently earned recognition in these same areas for several years running.

“We were honored to receive the awards,” shared Georgianna. “It is a lot of hard work, and it’s very rewarding to know that our effort is recognized.”

The major success of the restaurant is all due to excellent customer service, patience, and a passion for cooking good food. The owner, waitstaff, and cooks put in long hours each day to make sure each 2022 BEST OF FAYETTE COUNTY

customer is accommodated and served high quality products. The salad bar has a wide variety of options to pick and choose from to create the perfect appetizer, and the steaks are guaranteed to fill you up with their sizable portions.

Just as delicious are the savory beans and seafood options, which are guaranteed to reel you back in for a second visit. All of this, served to each customer with a smile and a genuine connection.

“I would describe the closeness of the staff in one word: ‘familia’,” Georgianna said. “We all have one thing in common, we like to work. It is a bond that can never be broken.”

Police dogs, or K9s, are specifically trained to assist law enforcement officers with anything from suspect apprehension to detecting explosives. Both them and their handlers require extensive training and belong to elite units within their respective departments.

Kolt has been with the department for four years and in that time has been personally responsible for tracking down criminals and millions in illegal substances. His handler, Sergeant Randy Thumann with the Fayette County Sheriff ’s Office, carved out some time to tell us more about his career and his partner, K9 Kolt.

Randy, can you give us some background on your career in law enforcement?

I began my law enforcement career in July 2005 with the Colorado County Sheriff ’s Office where I was employed for approximately four years as a nighttime patrol deputy. In April 2009, I was hired by the Fayette County Sheriff ’s Office as a patrol deputy working night patrol. I was then promoted to Narcotics Investigator working in and around Fayette County.

I then moved to Criminal Interdiction working on IH-10 with my primary focus on interdicting drugs, money, and weapons being transported by the Mexican Cartels between Mexico and major hubs throughout the United States. This was when I got my first dog “Knight,” a German Shepard from Germany. Because of the success I was having, I was asked by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) to become a TFO “Task Force officer” giving me full federal authority under the United States Department of Justice.

Kolt and I are also on a regional Special Response Team (SRT) team covering approximately five counties responding to critical incidents and serving high-risk arrest and search warrants and other situations requiring resources beyond the capacity of the patrol divisions. We are also on a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force and a DEA major drug squad.

What exactly is a K9 Unit?

A K9 unit is a Law Enforcement Officer with a specialized trained canine for a partner. Kolt is a dual purpose canine qualified in narcotic detection, patrol, and search or tracking operations. The dog’s enhanced capabilities of sight, smell, and hearing give the K9 unit a great advantage in succeeding in these specified situations. It takes a tremendous amount of work to keep the dog sharp in each of his disciplines.

What drew you to the K9 unit?

I have been a canine handler for approximately 12 years and have had three dual purpose police canines so far. I got the first dog to give me another tool in locating illegal drugs being transported in vehicles. After receiving my initial canine training and dog, I quickly realized the capabilities of a working dog and was amazed by what they can achieve and the drive they have to get it done.

After learning how great of an asset the canines are, I developed a passion for being a handler and have spent every day since dedicating myself to being a canine handler. Being a K9 unit gives me greater advantages in solving problems in the law enforcement world.

What does training look like for you?

For a dual purpose dog—tracking, patrol, and narcotics— the initial training is approximately six months long. After 2022 BEST OF FAYETTE COUNTY

the team is certified, the training responsibilities fall on the handler, and it usually consists of some type of training about five days a week. The more disciplines the canines have, the more training is required. Like anything else, to be successful beyond minimal standards takes more practice and training.

What are the most important characteristics of a K9 handler?

Teamwork, perspective, courage, resilience, mental and physical strength, discipline, and patience are just some of the characteristics that come to mind for a successful K9 handler. Because of the specialized training and capabilities of a K9 unit, we are asked to work with and assist every type of law enforcement agency all around the state. Teamwork is needed to work with many different teams to get the most successful outcome.

Canines are usually called when the situation is too dangerous or dynamic for an officer. So as a handler, you have to enter those high-risk situations without hesitation and help guide your canine through the obstacle. The ability to recover quickly from difficulties is a needed attribute; being able to fail and not quit but instead reevaluate and attack is key to a handler’s success. Mental and physical strength is needed to not only keep up with a dog but also not slow them down during training and live situations.

Canine officers are exposed to the elements during regular duties: heat, cold, rain, etc. Just because the weather is bad, or the circumstance are not perfect, the dog needs to train, exercise, or deploy regardless. This also is where discipline comes in. You will not be motivated every day to be a handler and want to do all the required tasks. To be fair to your partner and your team, discipline is what will continue to drive you to be successful.

Patience is probably one of the most important characteristics of a handler. Patience is required in every aspect of being a handler.

From training to live deployments, the dog will rarely think about a situation the same way as you, so failure and confusion from both the dog and handler are very common. Patience is a must to overcome and work through problems daily.

What are the most common breeds of dogs used in the K9 unit?

The three most common breeds are Belgian Malinois, German Shepherd, and Labradors. Although each breed has different attributes, the most important for a working dog is the drive that each of these breeds possesses. Malinois have a crazy work drive and a smaller structure which makes them more agile and faster. Shepherds are extremely loyal and are thorough.

Labradors are very social, friendly, and safe in a public setting.

Where was Kolt before he came to the department?

Kolt came from Poland and was imported to Texas around nine months old to begin his police training. I began training with him when he was 11 months old.

What are some of Kolt’s job duties?

Kolt is a narcotics detection canine certified in vehicles, buildings, and open area searches for illegal narcotics.

He is patrol certified which consists of handler protection, building searches, and bite capabilities.

Additionally, he is certified in tracking, meaning he can track criminals and lost or missing people. Kolt is also certified in repelling from buildings and helicopters.

What type of training is required for a police dog?

The training is unlimited as the dog needs to be exposed to as many scenarios and conditions possible so their comfortable and confident with any situation.

What does a typical shift look like for you and Kolt?

Usually, we start the day with some type of training, narcotics hides, or tracks. Then we head to the interstate where we make traffic stops throughout the day looking for criminals.

Usually, we do midday obedience and motivational session, stop some more cars and end the day with some ball throws.

The willingness to give their lives at a moment’s notice without hesitation is an attribute hard to come by. By taking illegal drugs and dangerous criminals off the street, canines are an essential role in protecting the community. Canines have been a part of police work since the 1800s and still, no technology has been created to replace what they are capable of.

Fortunately, our days are never usually the same. We may be called to assist another agency with a refusal or fleeing suspect.

We get called to run perimeter for arrest warrants or residential searches or narcotics search warrants. We assist the State SRT team, the United States violent offender’s task force, and DEA. One day a week is set aside solely for a full day of training to ensure we can train and cover everything needed to stay proficient.

What are some of the most interesting calls you and Kolt have been on?

We have played a vital role in the capture of three murder suspects on three different occasions. We have also worked with military and federal agencies in many large narcotics finds and arrests.

I don’t keep a specific number of what we have seized, but I can confidently say Kolt alone has been responsible for millions of dollars in illegal drugs and monies seized.

What does life off the clock look like for Kolt?

Kolt is usually given one or two days a week off. He spends that time in his kennel resting and recovering from the previous week. Nothing too exciting as his main source of entertainment needs to come from work.

Have you and Kolt received any awards or commendations?

As a canine unit, we have received many awards and commendations. Awards from the 100 club, National Criminal Interdiction Association, Motor Vehicle Criminal Interdiction/DIAP, The Texas Sheriffs Association, and the Fayette County Sheriff ’s Office.

What activities do you enjoy attending in the community?

We have attended many community programs for schools, the Lions Club, the VFW, as well as local parades. I enjoy sharing our experiences with the community as they have always been very supportive of what we do. Even spending a few extra minutes at a gas station to talk to a local supporter who has questions about what we do is enjoyable to me.

Why is the K9 program important to the department and the community?

The canine unit is an extremely valuable asset for any department and community. Canines are not only able to detect illegal narcotics or track fleeing suspects but also are there to protect

The Gardenia E. Janssen Animal Shelter (GJAS) has been a fixture in our Fayette County community since its inception in 1994. We serve the entire Fayette County population taking in, on average, 1,500 dogs and cats in need each year. In the past 2.5 years we have redefined who we are as an organization, we are more than a shelter; we are genuinely an animal welfare organization. There is no question we cannot save them all; however, this remarkable team of staff, volunteers, fosters, and transporters work tirelessly and creatively, every day, to save every life we can.

The daily operation of the animal shelter brings new challenges, hurdles, and sacrifices. Each day a dedicated staff and a resolute

team of volunteers that give their time must meet these challenges.

We believe it is an honor to serve the animals in need in Fayette County. We start at 8:00 a.m., 7:00 a.m. on Thursdays, with 40+ toddlers (basically) with dirty diapers! They need to get out of their confinement and do all the same things your dogs and cats do in the morning. They are all desperate for our attention, they are all hungry. Some need medications, some need a walk because they’re fence climbers, some need bandages changed, and some cones adjusted. They all deserve everything we can give them, and we give everything we have every day.

The work is difficult physically, mentally, and emotionally. When you see a dog or cat come in covered in mange, fleas, and/or emaciated it’s the most rewarding thing in the world to bring that animal back to life. We teach them to learn, trust, love, and then see

them move on to their new forever home; sometimes it’s like giving your own pet away.

If you drive down Svoboda Ln., you will likely see our staff and volunteers walking and playing in the yards with dogs. If you stop by you will see staff and volunteers playing with cats and kittens.

Socializing those in our care with people, and like companionship helps all our animals become more adoptable, and we are devoted to making sure that happens. Following our social media pages and sharing our posts helps do the same.

Our community often asks if we are a no-kill shelter, we are not. There are two types of shelters: Open Admissions and Closed Admissions, we are an Open Admissions shelter. We are contractually obligated to take in all animals that come to us regardless of illness, injury, or behavior. Although rarely, this does force us to make that gut-wrenching decision. FY2020-2021 we took in 2,749 dogs and cats. Of those in our care we saved 96%.

In the past 2.5 years we have partnered with over 40 Rescue Organizations to help save these lives and we have transported 800+ dogs and cats to these rescue partner.! We have GJAS dogs and cats in 31 states and from coast-to-coast. These partners have honestly been the lifeline, literally, for so many.

Our tremendous community of support helps us keep going. Every.

Single. Day. Fayette County shows up and shows out. We simply cannot continue this important work without YOU. The staff and volunteers are humbled and grateful for the honor of having your support, our hard work, and dedication recognized.

Colton grew into the idea of starting a tree business after reading some of the books and notes about trees his grandpa had left behind. His grandpa successfully owned and operated a local nursey and arbor care business for many years. After the major drought in 2011, Bubela saw how devastating the drought was to trees. Given his family ties as well as firsthand experience to environmental factors, he not only decided to start growing trees but also started studying arboriculture so he could offer continuing care to the trees he has grown and to established trees across Texas.

As a hobby, Colton started growing live oak trees in molasses containers in 2014. After selling several trees locally, he decided this could be a great business. While attending Texas A&M University, Colton studied Agricultural Economics with an emphasis on Rural Entrepreneurship. This is where he took an interest in arbor care and decided to pair this with his tree farm business; his business became full time in 2017 upon graduation. The tree farm is currently in Hackberry, and it is

open by appointment only. Colton is a certified arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA). He is also Texas Oak Wilt qualified and Tree Risk Assessment qualified.

Dreams of having a tree farm and nursery open to the public has always been a part of the Bubelas’ plans. Wonderful customers and community support have allowed that dream to come to fruition. A new tree farm, plant nursery and storefront will call the outskirts of Schulenburg home with a projected opening in the Spring of 2023. A variety of native shade trees, fruit trees, and landscape plants will be available with a storefront to include locally made goods, a variety of home products and handmade wood products recycled from our arbor care services.

I was employed for five years at another salon but owning my own salon would be one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. My early years of life began in the small town of Waelder. I was the third daughter of a family of four sisters and half-brother. I grew up around my sisters and many cousins doing all the normal things children do like riding bikes, playing hard ball and kick ball. I could be described by my family as more of a tomboy in early years. A cosmetologist could have possibly been an early dream of mine, unknowing at the time.

Having a mother who cut and styled hair for so many people and my father having several cosmetologists and barbers in his family this was always a thought that was what I should do as a career.

I graduated from Waelder High School in 1999. I became a mother at a young age to a wonderful son, Jeremy, who has also enlightened my life with two beautiful granddaughters, Addy and Jewelz. I’m married to a very supportive husband, Bart Blakelock, that encourages me in my career and is very proud of the business that I have created over time. My husband and I live in Flatonia and enjoy the community and the small-town living.

One month after graduating high school, I enrolled in Seguin Beauty School. It was a difficult time for me being a young mother

and attending school. I knew this would be a struggle but with family support I graduated from Seguin Beauty School. This was the start of my amazing career that I never dreamed would grow to this and have clients from other cities continue to travel for my services.

I love making my clients feel comfortable and feel like a million bucks after leaving my salon and this desire has created my own growth with great clientele. I am a very personable stylist.

BEST PHOTOGRAPHER WRITTEN BY GRACE-ANNE MATOCHA If you would have asked me three years ago if I could see where I’m at today, I would think you’re crazy. The support that I’ve received from this community brings tears to my eyes, as I know a lot of people have been rooting me on since I was just 16 years old. What started as a side hustle that made me $50 a week, is now my full-time career – and that is pretty darn neat.

My name is Grace-Anne Matocha, owner of Moments of Grace Photography. I picked up my first camera when I was 13 years old. My peers knew me as the girl who’s always taking pictures.

I remember when I was in middle school, I asked around 50 different people to let me take a picture of their eyes with my iPod Touch – and they actually said yes. I still have that photo collage to this day. As weird as it may sound, this “project” helped spark something inside of me — the need to create.

For my 16th birthday, my parents surprised me with my first DSLR camera, a Canon T5i (yes, I cried). It would then only be a couple of days after that, Moments of Grace Photography would be born. I immediately threw myself into all-things photography related, especially when it came to sports photography. I was granted a huge opportunity in high school and got to work with some pretty great people at the Fayette County Record for over four years before I went to further my education at Sam Houston State University. If I could count the number of hours

I’ve spent on the sidelines, I know it would be a lot, but all of those hours truly helped mold me into the creative I am today.

To say it’s been a wild ride is an understatement. From starting as a sports photographer to photographing hundreds of seniors over the years, I am now photographing weddings to capture people’s love stories.

During this progression came the introduction of aluminum body panels. So, they took the initiative to add on to the Body Shop, Making it the LARGEST body shop between Austin and Houston! In this process of facility changes, La Grange Ford was also able to increase sales on New and Used Vehicles to a level previously unheard of for a small-town dealership.

I’d like to point out the appreciation and enthusiasm Todd has for family, employees, and community. He has always made it of upmost importance to provide opportunities for employees to have secure, long-term jobs that can support their families.

BEST CUSTOM PICTURE FRAMING WRITTEN BY ADDIE DYBALA Dybala Photography and Framing, owned by Joe and Addie Dybala has been proudly serving our customers since 1981.

It all started back in 1974. Joe was a junior at Lamar Consolidated High School in Rosenberg. He was going to enter the photography contest in the Catholic Youth Organization he was a member of and needed an 8x10 photograph printed from his negative. Joe contacted a local photography studio in Rosenberg and was able to meet after hours to discuss what he needed. The phone rang and the photographer was talking with his wife for quite sometime. In the meantime, Joe noticed a picture frame in a vice that was being constructed. Not wanting to just stand around with nothing to do while waiting, Joe finished putting the frame corners together. When the phone call was finished, the photographer noticed the frame was no longer in the vice.

He asked Joe where it was and Joe showed him the fully assembled frame. It was no big deal for Joe to put two wood corners together.

Joe’s dad was a carpenter specializing in custom wood work in home construction. Joe worked with his dad since the fourth grade running baseboard in homes. Needless to say, Joe was offered a job on the spot to do custom framing. As time went on, Joe also began photographing weddings and doing color and black and white darkroom printing.

He later added studio portrait photography to his repertoire.

In 1981 Joe and his wife, Addie established their freelance photography business, Dybala Photography, working from their home. At that time they specialized in studio portraiture and weddings. With the encouragement of many customers and friends, they took the next step and leased a commercial space in a small shopping center. Now there would be ample wall space necessary to show a large selection of custom frame moulding samples as well as ready-made portrait frames.

Joe even had a full color darkroom where he printed all their portraits.

Addie did all the negative retouching and print finishing. After being established there for three years, in 1987 they purchased a 2,000 sq. ft. building a few blocks away which was their permanent location for the next 25 years. After photographing weddings for 26 years, in November 1999, Joe retired from the wedding business to devote more time to studio portraiture, specializing in high school seniors.

Now the digital era is here. In 1998 Joe started dabbling with scanning his copy work orders. The digital quality was not there yet to start photographing people. As time went on, the digital quality was quickly improving. Joe began doing more and more digitally while still running the darkroom. In 2003, the darkroom was completely shut down and converted to a digital lab. It was a sad day when the traditional color darkroom was completely shut down and saying goodbye to the traditional film techniques; truly, the end of an era.

Digital cameras then replaced the medium format film cameras.

In 1987 Joe earned his Certification Degree from the Professional Photographers of America. He has received many state, regional, and national awards. He received the Kodak Gallery Award for photographic excellence in 1991 and again in 1992. In 1995, Joe earned The Master of Photography Degree presented by the Professional Photographers of America for superior photographic excellence.

In 1998, he served as president of The Mid Coast Professional Photographers Guild. In 2017, Joe earned the Photographic Craftsman Degree presented by PP of A in recognition of service to the photographic profession as a speaker, author and mentor.

In 2008, daughter-in-law, Catherine joined the team as

photographic artist. Catherine earned the degrees of Master Artist and Master Photographer through the Professional Photographers of America. Her photo restorations have earned many state and national awards including several of her restorations being included in PPA’s prestigious Loan Collection.

Looking to slow down the fast pace they were so used to, and downsize, in December of 2012, Joe and Addie decided to follow through with the opportunity to move to Joe’s great grandparents original homestead outside Fayetteville which has been in Joe’s family for 100+ years. They built their tiny house on the property and in early 2013, found a space for rent on the town square where they relocated their studio to historic Fayetteville. Now, instead of the five day work week they always had, they are now only open Thursday – Saturday.

Since relocating to the Fayetteville Town Square, Dybala’s currently serve customers in 67 different towns, including Houston, Austin, San Antonio and many towns in between.

In 2017, Joe retired from portrait photography, focusing primarily on custom framing and photo copy and restoration work.

Dybala’s offers complete custom framing services, providing their clients with high quality solid wood frames. All work is done on premises.

They have over 1,500 solid wood mouldings to choose from. They also have a line of metal moulding. Their services include shadowbox detail, conservation of fine art, needlepoint stretching and creative matting.

Dybala’s also offers quality photo copy and restoration services from your photographs, negatives, slides, tin types and documents.

They can remove cracks, tears and stains, colorize black and white photos, remove or add people or change the background.

They also print custom photographs from your digital files.

January of this year Joe and Addie woke up realizing that they had to make a decision to start a waiting list for custom framing. This is something they have never had to do in all their 41 years of business!

They counted fifty-four different frames they had to do which included three baseball jerseys, one very detailed shadowbox for a fireman which included an axe, photographs, medals and pins. In addition, there were several huge paintings and numerous other miscellaneous framing jobs.

The main purpose of the waiting list was that there was no more room to store customer’s artwork safely and out of sight while waiting to be framed. As Joe finishes framing orders, we call people on our waiting list in groups of ten. The funny thing is that people are happy to get on the list! As of now, the waiting list continues to grow as we continue to finish frame orders. There are currently over 60 people on the list!

We are actually busier than we would like to be. The plan was to slow down when we moved to Fayetteville. So, after much consideration, we are announcing our retirement. We have been blessed to operate a successful business for almost 42 years.

We will be selling our custom framing business with all the custom framing inventory. This includes all frame moulding, glass and plexi, matboards and all equipment, furniture and supplies.

We would like to thank all of our devoted customers.

We have made many friends through the years and we will always cherish those friendships.

Over the course of nearly two decades and thousands of memorable shows, the listening room in La Grange has earned a sterling reputation as one of the best live music venues in the state, offering fans and artists alike a uniquely intimate concert experience described by Sara Hickman (yep, another distinguished former Official Texas State Musician) as “Austin City Limits meets your living room.”

Founder Lane Gosnay opened the Bugle Boy in January 2005, taking the name from the Andrews Sisters’ 1940 song “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” as a playful nod to the building’s origins as a WW II era Army barracks at Camp Swift Infantry Base in Bastrop. She then drew on her years of experience booking house concerts and the Houston International Festival to begin curating a wide range of independent artists representing every musical style from folk and blues to rock, soul, R&B, jazz, and more — with the one caveat being that they write and perform their own material.

Concerts are held at the Bugle Boy on Friday and Saturday nights year round (excluding holidays). Patrons are reminded politely but in no uncertain terms that talking during the performance is not permitted, but a break between two 45-minute sets allows ample time to socialize, refresh one’s beverage (beer, wine, coffee, root beer float, etc.) or even visit with the artists at the merch table. Most shows — pending the artist’s permission — are also streamed online, allowing fans from around the world to watch from home with the purchase of a webcast ticket.

Within three years of opening, supporters of the Bugle Boy created the Bugle Boy Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to “Elevate & Sustain Original Live Music.” To that end, in addition to continuing to offer great weekly concerts at the listening room, the Bugle Boy Foundation is committed to serving the greater community through music-based outreach programs, including nursing home concerts, Swan Song concerts for hospice patients, music-based opportunities for Veterans and youth.

Jackie Venson — voted “Musician of the Year” in the 2020/21 Austin Music Awards — played her own two-night-stand at the venue in June 2022 (attended by none other than La Grange’s own mayor, the Honorable Jan Dockery). And with an especially amazing lineup of artists already booked through the end of 2022 and beyond — including not just the aforementioned Foster, but Elizabeth Wills, Terri Hendrix & Lloyd Maines, Del Castillo Trio, Nellie McKay, Guy Forsyth, Kelly Willis, Albert & Gage, Butch Hancock, James McMurtry, Slaid Cleaves, John Fullbright, and many more, there’s never been a better time to visit this music lover’s oasis that songwriter Carrie Rodriguez (performing Dec. 10) unabashedly calls her “favorite little venue in the country.”

I love the way they work, their non-profit status,” enthuses renowned Texas singer-songwriter Radney Foster, who returns to the listening room on Dec. 9. “It is the kind of place that defines a community” Not surprisingly, the Bugle Boy has been instrumental in incubating the careers of many a talented up-and-coming act, with the Foundation even launching a “Talent Trust” program in 2009 to award selected artists financial studio recording assistance. BEST GALLERY WRITTEN BY KAREN VERNON Arts for Rural Texas (ARTS) provides art exhibitions for residents of and visitors to Fayette County. These exhibits are held in the ARTS Ross Gallery located at ARTS’ main campus in Fayetteville and in the ARTS Gorman Gallery located in Schulenburg. The two galleries feature artists of national recognition along with special events that highlight regional artists. Here visitors can find artwork that varies from paintings to fiber arts to sculpture to woodworking and more. Patrons can view world class art in a friendly and open environment.

In addition to presenting professional works, each August, the Ross Gallery in Fayeteville is filled with artwork by students in grades 6 through 12, all participating in the annual Emerging Artists competition and vying for the $5,000 in prize money. Then in December, the creatives from the region bring delightfully unique, original works to present in the two Holiday Shows when ARTS celebrates all the talented residents in the region. It’s a time to share and to celebrate.

The organization is currently approaching twenty years in service and has a mission to enrich lives through art education, performances and cultural experiences. Arts for Rural Texas not only encourages children to create with their hands and minds, they teach the children of today to become the innovators and leaders of tomorrow. BEST ANTIQUE SHOP WRITTEN BY KATHERINE SVATEK “First, I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote for Kat’s Antiques as the Best Antique Shop in Fayette County. It is truly an honor to know that my shops offer folks a place to come stroll through and recall their ancestry!”

So I want to present a history of how it came to pass that Kat’s Antiques is here for you.” – Katherine Svatek The first of Kat’s shops, Kat’s Korner was opened in October 2015

by Katherine Hanslik-Svatek, who is “Kat” to lot of folks in her world but she prefers Katherine. Kat’s Korner started the evolution of several other “Kats” shops in La Grange since then. Katherine was born in Moulton and she worked in a Dow Chemical research lab on the Texas Gulf Coast for 33 years after college graduation.

Retired here in La Grange in 2008. Those surnames obviously speak to her Czech-German ancestry but she says antiquing/collecting is as much part of her genetic makeup as her family ancestry.

She believes there is a kinship between chemical research and antiquing because she feels a similar sense of accomplishment from the creativity and experimenting involved in both. The feeling of connection to our predecessors is very strong when you hold a vintage item, handmade and used in the 1800s.

They were strong, hard-working and creative folks, similar to what is required to succeed in the antique business.

She says she has collected most of her life. She grew up with parents who were on opposite ends of that spectrum. Her father collected and was very interested in learning about, preserving and passing on knowledge of the past. Her mother, however, was more interested in keeping things neat and tidy so she disposed of a lot rather than collect. Kat says she vividly remembers the day when she was in high school and her mother was cleaning house. She showed Katherine her wedding dress, and because it was old and slowly

deteriorating, decided to dispose of it. As a teenager, Katherine didn’t have a lot to say but would pay a lot to have that dress today!

Although she collected she didn’t attempt managing/owning an antique shop until October of 2015. Before then she always rented space in other antique shops, but one day she had the idea to consider opening a shop of her own here in La Grange. When she left work at a local antique shop back then, she decided to drive around the square. Her father was a real estate broker and always told her location was key to the success of any business endeavor. So that fateful day, when driving around the square she found a location on a corner with a “For Rent” sign in the window! She pulled in quickly to write down the phone number and her heart started pounding and her brain started creating! She called the number and rented it the next day.

Often folks ask, “Where do you get all this stuff?” Well, at first one has to actively seek merchandise from garage sales, estate sales, resale shops and such. But once established, it becomes easier to acquire. Friends and relatives come to you when a family member has passed away or they are getting older and downsizing and want help or they just have an abundance of stuff.

Kat’s shops are co-ops of sorts. Between her two shops, she currently has over 20 partners. They rent space from her, buy and mark their own merchandise and depending on booth size, they work the counter a specific number of days per month as part of their rent.

This is why you often see different people greeting you when you come through the door of Kat’s shops…and seldom see Katherine.

She’s often in the background. She calls folks who rent from her “partners,” not vendors. They very soon become fast friends.

Katherine says, “I have to admit, it’s with pride and contentment that I’ve watched this endeavor grow in my time in La Grange from one shop opened in October 2015 (the only one on the square at that time)…to currently four antique shops on the square. I continue this endeavor for two reasons. First, the thrill of finding an item I’ve never seen before and second, the thrill of watching the happiness on folks faces when they find that specific item they have been looking for!”

Two shops on the square currently belong to Katherine and the other two were started by folks who moved from being a partner at Kat’s shops to opening their own shops. Judy’s Attic (Judy Tobias, owner) is located at 213 W. Travis Street and right next door is Potluck Trading Company (Deborah and Roger Anderson, owners) located at 207/209 W. Travis Street.

Most of Kat’s customers are from out-of-town and they are finding us on-line along with other attractions in our wonderful little town. Often we are the meeting place for folks from all directions. So come see us and you too might find that special piece of the past that you’ve been looking for. You’ll never know what you might find at Kat’s. There is depression glass, vintage furniture, signs, coins, comic books, paintings, Shabby Chic merchandise/pillows, puzzles and posters, graniteware, Royal Doulton pirate figurines, lamps, cobalt blue, S/P shakers, crocks, hand-painted windows, hat boxes, and much, much more.

BEST YOGA STUDIO WRITTEN BY KRISTIN HAVER Folk Wellness Co. was born after Social Worker, Kristin Haver, from Schulenburg, decided to take a chance on creating her own Wellness Company. She knew this journey would require TRUST. Kristin worked as an Account Executive selling wellness and well-being products. During that time in her life, she met powerful mentors. They took Kristin on as a protégé. They hired, supported, trained, and believed in her. They trusted her.

While still selling “wellness and well-being,” Kristin co-created, with Patrica Belleno, Life Party - group life coaching circles for women. Kristin used her strengths to sell her “product” and women gathered for healthy, honest healing.

However, Kristin was wrestling with her own resistance. The trust in herself wasn’t there. She was full of fear and not living in the flow of owning her unique gifts. Would people actually desire her product?

Kristin was fully aware that this fear-based resistance was created by her own ego. It was getting in the way of her dream. However, on this journey, Kristin continued to receive miraculous hits (attentiongetting, sparkly, life-changing moments) telling her to stay the course.

She would feel immense joy when she could envision the program.

Kristin decided to leap. Would the net appear? She left her sales position. And only had her Life Party Program in her pocket.

Immediately, Kristin was offered Bootcamp Instructing and Personal Training gigs at businesses and organizations all over Austin. She didn’t know how it was happening or why so quickly. Was Kristin now selling trust in Austin? It felt wild.

During this time, Kristin was offered grant funding through the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation (courtesy of Marathon Kids founder, Kay Morris - an above-mentioned mentor). This opportunity gave

her experience in planning events/runs as well as empowering the community with healthy eating, cooking, and gardening initiatives.

Also at this time, Kristin was sent on trips abroad (paid for by another of the aforementioned mentors, Katherine Jones). She realized how much she loved having roots and wings. ‘Adventure’ was one of her core values. She realized she was given this opportunity to feel into that, to own it, to create more… of that feeling and that product line!

Confidence was percolating. Ideas were brewing. Connections were aligning.

It was happening. Kristin was starting to believe in herself and “allow”.

“Allowing” gifts and synchronicities to unfold. Folk Wellness Co. became a “real” company and Kristin and Folk were getting published in books, and magazines, co-facilitating events, and retreats, and even landing speaking gigs and news spots. Kristin knew she had to spread the word that when one aligns with whom they are uniquely meant to be (Core Value Alignment) - life can truly be lived.

On 1/11, Kristin’s sister-in-law, Erin Wotipka of And Then A New Day, reached out and asked if she would bring the program “home,” to Fayette County. Folk Wellness officially expanded to the area on 1/11/11. Erin TRUSTED Kristin. Erin also knew how much Kristin loved “home” and her great desire to have roots and wings.

Folk Wellness Co. grew into a refuge as a safe, healthy, happy, and comfortable place for Folks to gather. The bootcamps spread to counties beyond Fayette and Travis - such as Erath, Colorado, Lavaca, Hays, etc … as well as to Durango, CO and Costa Rica.

Kristin hired a partner, Roxanne Stoever, that helped the program blossom. Folk Wellness Co. wouldn’t be anything without her as well as all the Kinfolk (partners) such as Turtle Wing, Jack & Mary’s, Juliette Duggar, the Folk coaches, family, and friends. It is truly an organization built on TRUST. Kristin felt confident with her

experiences, training, and education for the Program. Her vision manifested into a reality with lots of prayer, big dreams, and support along the way.

Folk Wellness Co. has become a comprehensive Wellness Program that includes, but is not limited to Live-Online, In-Person and Recorded Fitness Classes from Coach Lindsey Shiffli; 1x1 Personal Training; RunRx Training, MOM WOD, Nutrition Programs & Folk Foods; Health Partnerships with Doctors; Fun Swag; Fundraising; Runs, Races, Bike Rides, Obstacle Courses, 10ks 1/2 Marathons, Marathons, Hikes, Trail Runs, Swimming Workouts, Kayaking Trips, SUP Adventures; In-Person, Live-Online & Recorded Yoga Practices, Workshops and Retreats. Many Folks participated in some or all of the above for the first time ever.

BEST BARBECUE Saturdays spent under a canopy of trees, talking around a fire, all while enjoying savory barbeque and a cold drink; something every Texan looks forward to after a long week.

Food has this natural way of bringing people together, allowing joy and comfort to seep its way into a group. Moments like these motivate people to work harder, knowing that there will be moments just as sweet waiting for them at the end of each day. Korin and Derrick Burnett established Back Porch BBQ in April of 2012 with hopes of creating a lively atmosphere for families to come in and enjoy a homestyle barbecue meal.

And now, ten years later, that’s exactly what they’ve managed to do. With several 2022 Best of Fayette County awards 56

earned, Back Porch BBQ has proven that, with a little bit of brisket grease and a whole lot of heart, anything is possible.

Before starting a restaurant was even an inkling on the horizon, the couple spent many an afternoon with their two daughters, Kayler and Shelby, and some friends grilling on their pit in their backyard in their Houston home, relaxing, and enjoying each other’s company. Although Derrick was often traveling for his job in the oil field and Korin was kept busy by event planning, they never let a weekend go by without cooking out on their back porch. These fond memories are what they drew inspiration from when starting up Back Porch BBQ.

The SOB “Son of a Bun” Burger, a specialty burger created by Derrick and Korin. On the burger are two patties, topped with chili, cheese, bacon, pickles, and onion.

Realizing how busy a schedule they kept throughout a week, and wanting to have more time to spend together, Korin and Derrick decided it was time for a career change.

Although neither of them had experience in the restaurant industry, they would open up a restaurant centered around their favorite food - barbecue. The building that the Burnetts purchased to run Back Porch BBQ in was originally a home owned by a family in La Grange, so they truly live by their brand name. Considering Korin and Derrick’s passion for family and determination to bring this idea to life, and the dedication of the restaurant staff, it’s to no one’s surprise how successful they were in this year’s Best of Fayette County food category.

Back Porch BBQ earned six different Reader’s Choice awards this year; best barbecue brisket, best barbecue pulled pork, best barbecue ribs, best barbecue pulled pork sandwiches, best coleslaw, and best barbecue overall.

There were several other restaurants vying for those same categories, but Back Porch emerged victorious in the end. The food served and the hardworking staff at Back Porch BBQ stood out from the rest, pleasing the appetite of many across Fayette County and earning their votes.

After hearing all the awards earned, staff members broke out in cheers and high fived, proud of what they were able to accomplish. Many employees have worked at Back Porch BBQ since its opening, and they were super excited to see how the effort they put in over the years paid off.

They have expanded their outside seating area and work hard to make sure customers were comfortable and happy. Back Porch employees work around the clock serving customers, and making sure food is cooked to order. This diligence and love being poured into their business helped them keep things cooking throughout the pandemic. Since restrictions have loosened, Back Porch is back to full service, while still maintaining health and safety recommendations, and customers are more than excited to return. The community was happy to see that the restaurant was able to keep its doors open.
