hen people outside of the ed iver alley think of areas t to ursting with talent, chances are that they don’t think of our relatively small corner of Northeast Texas. But in my estimation, they should, ecause this community is one of the rightest in the state, as far as ’m concerned. This month, we highlight just a small fraction of that talent this community is lessed with. ur cover story highlights hilip Nance, a remarka le local musician. There’s a story on local preteen Atlas Musick, a gifted young geologist in the making. And there’s a story on local student athletes Logan and Lauren ority, who use their uni ue ond as twins to shine as volley all and asket all players. And that’s to say nothing of the terri cally talented aris Municipal Band, which this year is cele rating its th anniversary. A story highlighting the and’s past can e found within these pages as well, and the and can e found every riday evening throughout summer performing at Bywaters ark in downtown aris. Toni Clem has written the Deja View column since 1984. She has been married 51 years to Paris attorney A.W. “Plug” Clem of the Moore Law Firm, and has two grown sons, Chivas and Bachman. She had a Public Relations/Marketing firm, T.Clem & Associates, from 1986 to 2016. She is a graduate of the University of Texas/Austin, where she started graduate school. She continued that at Texas A&M Commerce, where she was a graduate instructor in political science. When she and Plug moved to Paris in 1969, her first job was ‘Society Editor’ for The Paris News. She left that to be press secretary for Jim Farris’ congressional campaign. She is an active member of the Northeast Texas community.

Chef Michael Perry is a graduate of The Art Institute of Dallas in Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management. Michael has always loved cooking, from a young age. He has been cooking for over 20 years and employed as a chef for 15+ years. Michael also enjoys hunting, fishing & spending time with his son Brayden & Fiancé Karen Ballard.

Shannon McGuire is a graduate of Roxton ISD, after which he played collegiate basketball for four years and graduated from both Grayson County College and Wayland Baptist University. He also graduated from Dallas Bible Theological Institute. He has been employed for the last 22 years at Collin County Juvenile Probation Department serving as the Court/ Legal Liaison for Juvenile Detention and Probation in the 417th District Court Collin County, Texas. He has been pastoring for 11 years and currently serves as Senior Pastor at Paris New Generation Church, 1513 Lamar Ave. in Paris. He is married with two children.

Ayesha Shafiq lives in Paris with her husband, Dr. Khalid Shafiq, who owns Paris Cardiology Center. She has three kids, Sayekm, Layla and Maya. Ayesha has been writing a heath column for Paris Life magazine for the past few years.

Philip Nance to debut new album tory y

rairiland science teacher, athlete and coach, one might not expect -year-old local musician hilip Nance to check so many oxes. owever, despite his myriad of talents, the man’s heart for music shines through all he does. After school lets out for the weekend, he packs his ags and hits the road, traveling to whatever new location he’s ooked himself for. Nance has performed anywhere from Lu ock, Texas to Broken Bow, klahoma, always keeping his southern, country-rock audience in mind. Though known for singing covers like omething to Talk A out y oe etzel and hake the rost y Tyler hilders, the crowds gather in large part to hear his original music. e likes to kick off the shows with easons, his favorite song of the ones he wrote. t covers all four seasons, and it’s just pretty much this guy reminiscing on what he and his ex were doing during those seasons, and it tells a story a out their relationship through the seasons of the year. o that was my favorite one to write, and every time play somewhere, that’s the rst song play that’s my own song, Nance said.

Mimicking the time-worn last call for drinks at nightclu s and ars efore closing, the al um tackles the idea of a nal chance with a former lover. Nance derives his inspiration from oth personal experience and the stories he hears from others. eally all my songs are inspired. t’s either personal or stories that hear from other people. o eading Towards the un was inspired y one of my uddies. He worked on the road, and he was always having to leave his girlfriend and stuff, so just kind of tied it ack into playing music. n addition to the upcoming al um, Nance has released four singles in the span of a year: “Heading Towards the un, Back igh chool, ou and

Nance got his start taking guitar lessons when he was young, ut he gave it up until a friend of his egan to play. hile at community college, he ought an old guitar and egan to practice with ouTu e videos and y listening to other artists. However, though his skills in singing, playing and songwriting grew, he still found himself lacking the con dence to perform onstage. t wasn’t until his mother ri ed him with a new guitar that he attended his rst open-mic night, Nance admitted with a laugh. had a con dence pro lem really with my singing. ’d have a few people here and there tell me was good. My mom would tell me was good, ut then my mom talked me into going to this open mic at Buffalo Joes.

And did that, and she was like, if you’ll keep doing it, ’ll uy you a good guitar.’ started doing it. was like, man, if she’s willing to uy me a guitar, ’ll go up and do it, Nance said. The rst mic-night turned into a second and a third, and efore long, people egan to take notice of his work and encourage him to pursue music further. The con dence uilder also motivated him enough to write and perform his own music. kept having people just telling me how good sounded and all this stuff, and that’s when kind of got into writing my own music and putting my own music out. And really ever since started putting my own music out, it’s just een speeding up and speeding up. Almost every weekend, almost, have at least one show somewhere, and it’s just fun to do that. Now, ’m focused a lot on songwriting. viously, the shows are great and will always e a good time, ut anytime have downtime, ’m trying to write something new, Nance said. Music wasn’t always his rst choice though. rowing up, he wanted to play professional ase all, a career he pursued y playing sports through high-school and into junior college. owever, after two years playing ase all with edlands ommunity ollege, he was injured and needed six operations on his ack, including two surgeries. Though he might have een a le to keep playing, it would have een a stretch. nstead, he went to Texas A M niversity of ommerce where he got his achelor s degrees in kinesiology and iomechanics. The degrees opened the door for him to teach third-grade science and social studies in Blossom, run his own summer athletic training camp and do music part-time. like doing oth, ut that’s the dream. f could do music full-time, that’d e ideal for me. Like said, love coaching, love teaching. But Paris Life

ever since really started getting into it, ’ve een hooked on it. can’t shake it. ’m not saying want to, ut even if tried, pro a ly couldn’t, Nance said. For other aspiring musicians, he warned that not all successes occur overnight. would say just take it as it comes. ’ve een ad a out forcing things and really trying to do too much at once. … A lot of people have a misconception that, you know, if you drop one song, you’ll just go straight to the top and everyone’s gonna love it, and the next think you know, you’re a ig shot. But it takes time; enjoy the whole process of it. would have never dreamed ’d e doing what ’m doing now. opefully ve years from now can look ack and say the same thing, he said. u

t’s usual for children to have multiple interests in their life, some interests fall y the wayside while another takes their place. But for Atlas Musick, her primary interest in geology gra ed her heart and mind as a little girl and only grows stronger year to year. t has een exactly a year since the rst article, in The aris News, on Atlas’ unusual ho y and her enthusiasm and knowledge has increased y leaps and ounds. n fact it’s more accurate to classify her passion as a calling instead of a ho y! Those gorgeous rown eyes light up as she rolls out the names of minerals and stones most people can’t pronounce looking at the word written out. halcanthite, uorite, red arrel, searle topaz, pink topaz, ix ite are a few of the stones she can talk a out knowledgea ly. id you know sapphires and ru ies are the same stone, it’s the minerals in them that makes them lue or red! she imparts. ne of the rst offerings she makes is a fragile looking crystal called sunstone. he explains that the unassuming crystal turns yellow and almost glows in sunlight. er eautiful lighted ca inets are glittering and glowing with even more nds than efore. ome she has mined and others she has purchased with money she makes y creating and selling soaps. These soaps are made in the images of (what else) eautiful crystals. They are a ig hit at hristmas time as gifts and ena le Atlas to indulge in her pursuit of igger and etter crystals and minerals. This year she had a display of her crystal soaps and some of her rocks and minerals at the museum of the addo. There her u ling joy in her chosen interest impressed everyone. There is an unusual lue tinted stone in her locked ca inet. t is fragile and also toxic to humans if wet! he gives it the respect it deserves. thers she gladly hands out for visitors to examine. Atlas egan sorting rocks at a out on the playground at school. Neither her mom, Mary, nor dad enneth had any interest in rocks . But they are caught up in the joy of rockhounding along with their only child now. The usy crowds of theme parks and tourist spots have no appeal to the family. nstead they choose to e outdoors in whatever weather searching and digging, chipping and washing natural formations. n addition to various trips to tah, Arkansas, Missouri and a lot of other places they have just had a recent trip to the Mona Lisa mine near Mena, Arkansas. The mine has een closed since the ’s and they were a le to go y a private invitation. t’s easy to understand why rockhounding is appealing. t is a perpetual treasure hunt. Look at this! Atlas exclaims. hen rst spotted it there was only a little it of uartz crystal showing. o thought would take it home. tarted digging and just look! he stands next to a complex structure of stone, crystal and minerals easily over two feet long.

The Musiks have another trip planned. “We’re going to Arizona to go into an underground mine, the girl smiles. ’ve never done that efore. Tur uoise has ecome something that interests the ten year old. he hands over various sizes of tur uoise earing rock . nly when it is wet down is it possi le to see how eautiful it truly is. Tur uoise needs to e sta ilized, she explains. t can e fragile if not. Geodes are another one of her favorites. The round formations look like just alls of plain rock on the outside ut when split open can offer up delicate, sparkling miniature worlds. ight now she is creating a unday school lesson for adults a out the twelve stones of the New Jerusalem the Bi le mentions. he already had samples of almost every one of them. er knowledge goes far eyond an average ten year old. he has made friends with so many rock hounds, oth online and in person. Major, personally knows Atlas and her mom and dad. Atlas has even een in one of his videos. t’s easy to understand why she is such a hit with other, adult a cionados. he is charming yet hum le and as willing to listen as to talk. The family has learned so much. They learned more a out how to make purchases. ou need the papers, Atlas explains. A provenance increases the value signi cantly. There are even unscrupulous dealers who sell fakes, they say. Mary and enneth have een hard pressed to keep up with their daughter ut are now as hooked as she is. As Atlas’ knowledge and reputation increases, people on social media post photos and ask for help in identi cation or just show her a nd she will e fascinated with. n addition to her enchantment with the world of rocks, minerals and crystals, she is still devoted to her ock of goats, the chickens, the garden and swimming. he and her mother pick fresh erries or vegeta les and Atlas is learning how to cook and prepare these fresh delicacies. ad enneth has uilt her a luxury tree house. Nestled in the trees it features a mini fridge, small

air conditioner and a ig deck. They have movie nights and often star gaze from the deck. he even studies there a lot. he has just nished the fth grade. Nothing would do ut ring the newest a y goat in to e hugged and cuddled. h, and keeter has joined the menagerie now. u the enormous reat ane and Buckee the older terrier mix tolerate keeter. The new rat terrier puppy happily gam ols eneath u ’s giant paws. The cat simply looks at him aloo y. A year later, Atlas Musick still wants to e a geologist. n addition to envisioning her as a marvelous professor at some prestigious university it is now easy to see her having a future on ou Tu e educating and sharing her love of all things crystal, mineral and stone. he certainly manages to do so one on one with anyone who cares to let her share her world. u

hether they’re on the asket all or volley all court or just out and a out, sisters and North Lamar students Lauren and Logan ority tend to draw attention wherever they go. Both are fairly tall for their age, and more importantly, the pair are a out as close to identical as two people can e. Lauren and Logan are identical twins, and over the years have grown accustomed to the attention that often falls on them as a result. e’re used to people kind of staring when they see us shopping or whatnot, Lauren said.

e don’t really mind, Logan added. e think it’s funny. rowing up, the duo were each incredi ly distinctive, with Lauren eing what many would call a tom oy from a young age, while sister Logan was more than happy to enjoy things typically ascri ed as girly. Their parents sometimes tried to dress them in matching out ts, ut that didn’t go over well with the girls. e had two of everything clothes, and our parents would try to get us to wear the same thing, Lauren explained. e didn’t like wearing the same thing, though she didn’t want to match me. hen had the chance to dress them when they were real little, they dressed the same, mother Mindy ority said with a laugh. retty much pinks and purples. As they got older, they weren’t too enthusiastic a out it though. tories a ound of twins forming an unspeaka le connection that orders on psychic, and Logan and Lauren can attest to the veracity of those types of tales.

The pair recalled an incident from years ago that took place at a McDonald’s playplace. Lauren, playing on the playground e uipment, egan to have an asthma attack. Logan, sensing something was amiss with her sister, went and found her and pushed her down the slide where her randma was a le to leap into action and help. At a much older age, Logan said she remem ers eing alone in her room and getting the sense that Lauren was in trou le. And, as it would turn out, Lauren was in fact eing reprimanded for some mis ehavior at that exact moment. can’t really explain it, Logan said with a smile. But those things you hear a out twins having telepathy are de nitely true.

Lauren added that she and her sister have an uncanny a ility to score the same on TAA tests and other school projects. And we don’t sit next to each other or cheat, she quickly added, eliciting a hearty laugh from Logan. As they grew up and spent time together, their interests slowly converged, and y the time they were school-age, they more or less shared the same interests. “We have all the same friends, are into the same things — we’re asically together all the time, Logan said. They oth took a liking to it, and a middle school growth spurt only made them more adept at each.

The pair agree on which they like more, each preferring volley all. And indeed, volley all is the sport they shine at most, each emerging as ona de stars in their sophomore seasons this past year. When they got to high school however, the pair was separated for one of the rst times in their lives, as Lauren was put on the varsity squad as a freshman, whereas Logan spent most of her freshman year on the JV teams. think it was actually a good thing for Logan , eing separated from her sister like that, Mindy said. he was really a le to esta lish herself as her own person, and ecame a leader on that J team. Reunited on the varsity teams as sophomores, each shined on the court. Now, as they prepare for their junior years of high school, the pair are looking forward to the remainder of their high school journeys, athletic and otherwise, and college eyond that. e’re de nitely going to always e a ig part in each other’s lives, Lauren said. hope that never changes. u

The June evening was marked with special music written for the th anniversary season along with a guest conductor and a proclamation recognizing the and’s accomplishment y the Mayor of aris. “The dedication and hard work of this talented group of past and present musicians is commended and recognized y all of the citizens of aris, aris Mayor aula ortugal said in recognition of the historical occasion. proclaim this cele ration of the th anniversary of the aris Municipal Band. ey racing fans, game developer Milestone has something you need to see. Not only is ot heels nleashed the arcade racer of the year, in my opinion, ut it unleashes all the nostalgia feels for those of us who grew up playing with the popular diecast cars. As a s kid, collected ot heels along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Masters of the niverse and ar age ail ids toys. n fact, had a whole trunk full of ot heels efore they were lost to time during one of our moves. That doesn’t mean ’ve let go of all ot heels. The collector in me has held onto its ollection that includes the uperman, Lex Luthor, Joker, Batman and o in cars. was a solutely giddy when started up ot heels nleashed and found the ollection availa le to hit the tracks. ou know what else is availa le . .T.T. from night ider and the eLorean from Back to the uture. eah, ’ve raced all of

them since downloading ot heels nleashed during ony’s ays of lay sales event in late May early June. ven though ’m not a ig racing game fan — ’ve enjoyed a few titles over the year, namely Burnout aradise — the deal was too good to pass up the ot heels nleashed ltimate tunt dition, which included all the downloada le content released up to that point, marked down to . from . . That’s a great discount on a game that’s still receiving downloada le content. The game comes with nearly unlocka le or purchasa le vehicles, a solo campaign, online and split screen multiplayer, a highly customiza le asement area and a wonderfully fun track editor. Many of the vehicles are customiza le too.

For instance, my son has a Motosaurus that’s yellow and red instead of the green and orange in the game, so we customized its colors to look just like his. Hot Wheels games have been hit or miss in the past, but Milestone knocks it out of the park on “Hot Wheels Unleashed.” I played through the entire City Rumble map, and while early races are super easy so you can learn to drift and boost, the later races had me leaning into curves as though it were actually helping. Each car has four attributes: speed, braking power, acceleration and handling. Players can earn gears by racing or stripping duplicate vehicles to pay for car upgrades that affect those attributes and also boost type. Word to wise behere: Watch what the upgrade will do to your boost be cause upgrading from common to rare to legendary can reduce the amount of boost available. Spend your gears wisely. Players also earn coins that can be spent on blind boxes. If I have one criticism for Milestone, it’s the use of this loot box system that’s infuriating when it repeats the same vehicles over and over again. Oh, did I mention there’s Monster Trucks available? There absolutely is, and they come with a special trick up their sleeve: They’re immune to some track traps. The bottom line is this — “Hot Wheels Unleashed” delivers beautiful graphics, tight racing mechanics and absolutely some of the best fun you can hope to have this summer.

am occasionally asked why or what a director’s cut is. And ’m here to report that it is simply the movie the director wanted to make, not necessarily the one the studio wanted to release. adly, those decisions are usually ased on money. To say making movies re uires a great deal of money is a ridiculous understatement. ilms uickly went from eing just one in a long list on a studio’s production schedule, projects written y in-house writers using in-house stars and lming on studio ack lots to those shot on several locations, using more sophisticated screenplays and casting actors with autonomy to negotiate fees. The average cost of making a movie now runs etween and million. n , it cost million to make ingdom of eaven. Moreover, director’s cuts are generally not released to the pu lic ecause on most lms, the director doesn’t have the privilege of making the nal cut i.e. edit . That privilege may e extended to auteur’ directors. But that’s a different column. The decisions involved in the nal cut are generally made y those with money

in the lm production companies, distri utors, studios. ’m sure you’ve o served, as opening credits roll, how many production companies it now takes to make a lm ecause it’s gotten so expensive.
