ith events like Magnolia Days Festival and Ladies Night Out to their credit, one thing the City of Columbus knows how to do is throw a great party.

When the city celebrates its 200th birthday in 2023, bicentennial celebration planners say it’s sure to be one of the biggest, best bashes to date.

“We think this is a great reason for a celebration.

A group of community leaders and historians are putting their heads together in planning for this huge milestone. The Columbus Chamber of Commerce is taking the lead on the events, but several other organizations such as the Columbus Historical Preservation Trust are huge participants. We are inviting every organization in Columbus to join in,” event committee members say.

Each month will have a theme of a historic time in Columbus’ history and be incorporated with the Columbus of today. The launch of ideas to civic clubs, churches and others throughout the community is currently underway.

The culmination of events is scheduled to be the 2023 Magnolia Days Festival.

Columbus bicentennial celebrations are set to start with a bang at this year’s Fourth of July fireworks show and festivities.

“Consider the events or activities you already have during the year and see how you could incorporate the bicentennial into the event. Then contact the Chamber office and we will relay the information to the steering committee,” Columbus Chamber of Commerce representatives say.

FROM 150 TO 200 Another element of the Columbus bicentennial blowout will be the 200 Club. The Columbus sesquicentennial celebration was May 11-12, 1973.

Newspapers including the Corpus Christi Caller, Rosenberg Herald Coaster, Kerrville Daily Times, Del Rio News Herald, Denton Record Chronicle and Waco Citizen were among publications throughout the state promoting the monumental occasion.

That year, the city of Columbus celebrated its 150th birthday with well wishes from state dignitaries, a parade, festivals, historical reenactments and even a congratulatory letter from then President of the United States Richard Nixon.

Sesquicentennial event leaders created the 150 Club to assist with the financing of the celebration.

In keeping with that tradition started in 1973, the 200 Club is a membership that will not only help finance this historic event for Columbus, but will have special privileges and gifts for members.

For a membership of $200 a Club member will receive a Columbus Bicentennial T-shirt, Bicentennial cookbook, commemorative handcrafted silver Magnolia pendant or handcrafted leather key chain, and other features.

CALLING ALL HANDS ON DECK To put together a year-long set of successful events to celebrate this milestone, volunteers are needed. Chamber reps ask, “If you find it in your heart to join in this effort, feel free to contact the Chamber office and let us know. If you have an idea for an event, or possibly even know something from Columbus history we may be interested in, contact us.”

A 200th birthday only happens, well, once. And if Columbus Bicentennial planners have their way, it’ll be the birthday bash of the millennium.

« COLUMBUS Did you know the City of Columbus hosted the first Fourth of July celebration in the State of Texas in 1826?

Still a crowd favorite, the annual Fourth of July fireworks show and festivities are slated for July 4 at the Columbus Municipal Golf Association.

This free public event is full of old-fashioned family fun, music, food and of course brilliant fireworks display sponsored by HEB and co-sponsored by Top Dog Construction and Repair.

Fireworks will begin at about 9:15 p.m.

View the show from your car, a seat in the Columbus High School stadium or sit on the golf course. The golf course has limited seating spaces, so arrive early.

The Columbus City Pool will be open free of charge from 6 – 9 p.m., thanks to sponsorship by Texas Farm Bureau Insurance, Agency Manager James Janik.

EAGLE LAKE » The 24th annual Eagle Lake fireworks show will be Sunday, July 3 at 9 p.m. on Calhoun Road west of town about a quarter mile from Highway 90A. Admission is free and there’s plenty of parking on both sides of Calhoun Road.

This beautiful display of fireworks across the sky is organized, produced and directed by a group of local volunteers. The show is funded entirely through donations from individuals, businesses and local organizations. Tailgating is encouraged, so come early to get a great seat.

The 30-minute show is accompanied by patriotic music. Radio station 89.9 FM will simultaneously broadcast the show’s music so spectators can tune in and capture the entire experience. olumbus Physical Therapy began its services in 1980 in a modest department inside the Columbus Community Hospital.

Terry Sablatura, PT went to The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and brought much needed physical therapy services back to Columbus and the surrounding communities.

Over the course of the past 42 years, Columbus Physical Therapy has grown into a physical therapy practice that serves the needs of patients in the entire region. Columbus Physical Therapy has grown from a staff of three to a current staff of 45, serving the inpatient and outpatient needs in Columbus, Eagle Lake, and Hallettsville.

The company is currently owned and managed by Rachel Post, PT and Kristina Pflughaupt, with Terry Sablatura, PT remaining as a silent partner. The goal of Kristina and Rachel is to bring quality services to local communities so that patients do not have to drive into Houston or other metropolitan areas for physical or occupational therapy.

Columbus Physical Therapy offers physical therapy, occupational therapy, and aquatic therapy. They have staff certified in LSVT for Parkinson’s, a Fellow in Manual Therapy, certified staff in dry needling, certified lymphedema specialist, wound care, and pelvic floor health.

CPT sees patients for post-surgical care, sports medicine, pain conditions, post stroke rehab, general weakness, and vestibular issues.

this summer. The additional space will accommodate the growth they have seen over the past 10-15 years, as well as space to bring in additional programs.

The Wellness Center will have a stateof-the-art Fitness Center that is open to the public. Columbus Physical Therapy will work to transition their patients to the fitness center upon the completion of physical therapy.

Weimar Hormigas bring professional

baseball

to Colorado County

A

lready missing Colorado County baseball? Can’t wait until next year? Luckily for the county’s citizens, the Weimar Hormigas will be playing out their inaugural season during the summer months as part of the Pecos League regular season.

The Weimar Hormigas are a completely new team that began their first action in recent weeks. The Hormigas joined the Pecos League which features teams from across several southwest states including three teams in Texas.

The Pecos League is a semi-pro baseball league that is independent and not affiliated with any MLB or minor league teams. In fact, teams are intentionally placed in towns without any sort of MLB or minor league presence to promote regional support.

Weimar, along with fellow newbies the Austin Weirdos, joins a league in which the only other Texas team in Alpine has already established an identity with two championships in the league’s 11-year history.

The Hormigas will have a packed schedule as they try to start off the team’s history with as strong a season as possible.

The games are nearly daily, with the team having only three days off in June and seven days off in July including the yearly All-Star game break. Home games will be played in Weimar’s own Veteran’s Park as they hope the community will back their town’s professional baseball team. Away games will be broadcast through a link on the team’s official website. The postseason tournament spans the first two weeks of August as

fall sports begin to ramp back up.

Hormigas fans will get to cheer for a young team this summer as Weimar boasts a team with most of its players being 25 or younger. While sports seasons experience somewhat of a lull during the summer months, Weimar’s newest semi-professional baseball team is hoping to fill the gap before the Fall with two months of solid baseball and a deep postseason run. *Below is the team’s schedule taken straight from the Hormigas website.

Basic weight training with exercises like squats and bench presses are a great way to build strength and muscle.

F

or many sports, summertime marks the offseason, a good time for athletes to work on their skills, reflexes and bodies to prepare themselves for another strong season. Even for those not preparing for any type of organized sports, the summer is a great chance to find ways to be active and fine tune your body through different athletic activities.

The Citizen reached out to professional athletic trainer Dakota Loosemore for some advice on workouts citizens can do to prime their body’s performance. Loosemore, one of the trainers for the 2019 National Champion LSU Tigers’ football team, knows the ins and outs of the human body and the effects sports can have on the body’s health and function.

Here are some key tips and main points from his conversation with the Citizen on how athletes prepare their bodies for the season, and some general advice at the end for anyone whether they are an athlete or not.

INCREASE YOUR BALANCE In the world of sports, balance is a vitally important factor to athletic performance, albeit an underrated one. The big picture concept can be better described as “body control”, and balance can be specified as the body control you have while one or both of your feet are connected to the ground. Good balance helps you stay in control of the weight distribution between your feet. Quick changes of direction, sprints from slow speed, and defensive lateral movements are nearly impossible if you do not have the proper balance to stay on your feet as you move from movement to movement. And there are very few sports where you can be highly effective while falling to the ground. Many running backs in the 12

NFL partake in ballet lessons to work on and increase their balance so they can stay on their feet better after taking contact. Many ballet skills are used in gymnastics, a sport where body control and core strength is everything. For those more apprehensive about using ballet to improve their game, plyometrics is another great way to work on your balance and increase the explosive power in your legs. Plyometrics is often done through a series of jumps either from one foot or two feet, but it also has several different variations. It strengthens the muscles used in launching yourself from the ground and controlling yourself on the landing. Not only will your legs and balance grow stronger, but your body control in the air may increase as well by getting your body accustomed to the act of leaping and landing.

INCREASE YOUR STRENGTH Strength training is one of the things many athletes are already very comfortable working into their offseason routine. Players benefit from having bigger, stronger bodies, but the main goal should be to increase your strength in target areas that will help you do more in your arena of competition rather than simply stacking weight. Things like bench press, squats, planks, calf raises, bicep curls, and tricep pushes are just a few basic workouts that will significantly increase the max strength you can pull from your muscles. The stronger your muscles are, the easier it is to do difficult actions with your body midgame. Also, weaker muscles are much more susceptible to injury which is why it is important to strengthen every part of your body individually using a routine that works for you or given by a trainer/coach.

INCREASE YOUR AGILITY As players grow stronger and bigger, it’s especially important that they are still able to remain agile and quick on their feet. Many sports require you to change speeds and directions quickly, and the most effective players at the highest levels are those that can freely do those movements with ease and regularity. To start, players will need to make sure they have great balance as previously mentioned. That gives them the strong base needed to quickly shift their body weight into different actions in-game. After building that strong base, players have their pick of several different exercises to increase their footspeed and activity. Two effective exercises are the ladder step workout and lateral shuttle runs. Ladder steps are done with an agility ladder that is placed on the ground, ideally with the space between each rung equally spaced out. The participant then quickly taps both feet one after the other inside the ladder and then outside the ladder as they try to make it all the way down the ladder as fast as possible. Lateral shutter runs are good for lateral movements such as the side-toside movement of basketball defenders. The basic set up generally includes cones laid in a straight line. The athlete will shuffle their feet laterally to the closest cone and then back to the beginning cone, repeating that motion to each cone in sequence until you finish by traveling to the furthest cone and back. You can include variations on this exercise by setting up a second layer directly behind the first line of cones to include the backpedaling motion that many defensive backs in football use in coverage.

INCREASE YOUR FLEXIBILITY The final tip Loosemore gave is something simple enough that anyone is capable of whether they play sports or not: stretching. Athletes may stretch before working out, but they rarely set aside a significant amount of time for daily stretching. Athletes under Loosemore’s care spend the first month of camp prior to the season participating in a stretching program that includes 10 minutes of stretching with a five-minute foam rolling session for their muscles after. During the season, they ratchet it up to 20 minutes before practice. The importance of strengthening your joints and increasing your range of motion is crucial, especially in situations where collisions and tumbles force your appendages into uncomfortable positions.

“Flexibility is one of those things that high school athletes don’t work on until they get to college and see how important it actually is for the performance,” Loosemore said.

Stretching should be in everyone’s playbook, not just athletes in sports. The consistent practice of stretching and breathing keeps your joints limber and limits pain, strengthens the muscles being stretched allowing them to do more, and promotes blood flow throughout the body.

Two great stretches are the walking hamstring scoop and the child’s pose stretch. The former is performed by taking a step forward, swinging your arms down as if you were trying to touch your toes and then making a ‘scooping’ type of motion with your arms as you follow through. This exercise stretches your hammies and gets blood flowing through your legs and body with the extra movement.

The child’s pose is done by starting on your hands and knees and then bringing your hips and body back until your arms are fully extended and your posterior is near or directly over your heels. Both are great stretches for your back which can be one of the most painful parts of the body if allowed to get stiff.

Remember some of these tips if you are an athlete looking to get a leg up on the competition, or even if you are a full-time worker looking to find ways to be more active with limited time. The summer is the opportune time to start creating healthy habits that increase your body’s performance and allow you to stay active.

Lacrosse grabs a

A

foothold in rural Texas

unique sport has found its way into circulation near Colorado County in recent months as more and more players join the bandwagon and participate. Lacrosse, one of the most underrated sports in the state, is gaining momentum after setting its first roots in the city of La Grange. Who could’ve guessed that out here in the country would be an optimal breeding ground for interest in the sport to grow? Certainly not La Grange Leopard Lacrosse team founder Isaac Santana, who had no idea the potential of where lacrosse could lead or the fellow players around him who have found a love for the non-traditional sport.

While it is a sport that brings a whole new experience entirely, it has many similar elements to some more well-known and practiced sports in the country. The field positioning for players looks similar to what a soccer manager may choose for his team, save for the fact there are fewer players on the field. The physicality of the more aggressive players draws from the same raw power that linebackers or defensive backs use in football. Hockey even shares a core similarity with lacrosse as the target of both games is to launch an object into a goal only slightly wider than the goalie in front of it using a stick. The lacrosse stick itself is truly what makes the game so unique. With varying lengths and a net to cradle a baseball sized 14

game ball, the main tool of lacrosse makes the sport unlike any other. These were all the initial and basic things Isaac Santana learned when he was first introduced to the game, long before he began building teams in towns all over the area.

Santana found his start in the sport after local lacrosse lover Steve Mathiason first put him on to the appeal. Believing Mathiason was preparing for a soccer game at a La Grange field, Santana spoke to him with hopes of getting back into soccer for his lifestyle. Mathiason revealed that they would not be playing soccer, and that they instead would be playing lacrosse. Then Mathiason made a gesture that potentially changed the trajectory of Santana’s sports life: He invited him to play.

"I was like ‘sure why not’,” Santana recalled of the fateful interaction before playing and learning the game with Mathiason,” He told me, ‘You’re a natural.’

And that gave me the inspiration you need to join something.”

Once introduced, it didn’t take long for Santana to develop an appreciation for the game. Unfortunately for Isaac, there were no official teams or leagues in place for him to participate in the area.

“La Grange is a place about baseball and soccer and football, that’s pretty much it,” Santana said of his town’s sports tastes.

Despite seemingly low public interest in the sport, Santana had no issue inviting personal friends and people he met to come to organized practices. Just by reaching out to

people in his community, he has been able to grow a sizable lacrosse base in La Grange, dubbing the new club the La Grange Leopard Lacrosse group. Things started ramping up quickly for the LLL after its initial meetings.

Since then, they’ve been able to rapidly increase membership, acquire the assistance of an actual pro lacrosse player, and establish sponsorships with a few local businesses. The true marvel is the spread of lacrosse through Santana. With teams gathering in places like Bastrop and Austin, it seems as if lacrosse is slowly becoming more relevant in the rural areas of Texas.

People in the community have really gotten behind the team as well with citizens donating cases of water, Gatorades and snacks for the group. Santana’s group benefited greatly from the kindness of strangers after introducing them to something they were likely unfamiliar with prior.

Santana has big things planned for the teams he has a hand in as well. He wants to create a field specifically for lacrosse for the original team in La Grange, and he wants to continue to gain enough numbers to create several different teams including adult and youth teams. With more and more people entering the sport with open minds, it seems likely that lacrosse will continue to spread, especially if it continues to be backed by the communities they reside in. And who knows? There might be a lacrosse team in your neighborhood some time soon.

T

he Live Oak Art Center in Columbus was founded in June 1964 by a group of local art enthusiasts.

Columbus Historical Preservation Trust Director Charlotte Tilotta said, “Painters had initially met and worked in the kitchen of the Live Oak Hotel.

They started a formal art club and adopted the name Live Oak Art Club for their chapter affiliated with the Amateur Artists Association of America.”

In May 1955, over 30 artists exhibited nearly 200 paintings in the first annual Sidewalk Art Sale, which later became the Live Oak Art Festival.

The art show, hosted annually in May, has grown to become the two-day Magnolia Days Festival.

The center is dedicated to promoting the fine arts, expanding art education, and enhancing cultural enrichment.

Located in the historic 1891 Brunson Building, admission to Live Oak Art Center is always free and open to the public.

The Center prides itself in offering a robust permanent collection, diverse and exciting exhibits, and a variety of community education programs. The exhibition calendar has approximately 10 events a year, featuring both established and emerging artists from around the state, as well as artwork in a wide variety of media.

Classes in pencil and painting, dance, and ArtStart classes for children are hosted by Live Oak Art Center year round.

Live Oak Art Center is located at 1014 Milam Street in Columbus. Gallery hours are Wednesday - Friday from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Visit liveoakartcenter.org for a calendar of events and center information.

ities throughout Colorado County are known for the beautiful historic homes with spacious porches perfect for sitting.

From salmon salad to freshly baked pastries, floral arrangements, movie nights on the lawn, live music, coffee, wine and eclectic artwork, you never know what whimsical finds await you at The House.

On any given morning, afternoon or evening, you’re sure to see an assortment of folks sitting on the porch enjoying the breeze and great conversations, and that’s just what owner Sarah Koller wanted.

“There’s something special about Columbus,” she said. Sarah was working in human resources when the pandemic started in 2020. While working from home, staring at the same walls every day and logging in for countless Zoom meetings, she realized there had to be more. A friend told her to start looking at towns between Austin and Houston. During these trips, she kept coming back to Columbus. Here she met some dear friends and after a few nights and a few glasses of wine, Sarah said The House was born. Lea Ann Dorsett became a friend, mentor, and the nudge needed to make the dream a reality.

And if you’re thinking you can get the same coffee anywhere, think again. Sarah uses coffee from a small batch roaster in Houston - Boomtown and flavored syrups made in-house with raw cane sugar.

The same care that goes into Sarah’s selections of coffee, wine, and unique cuisine also went into her offering The House as the hosting venue for the Live with Pride art exhibit through the month of June.

COLUMBUS LGBTQ+ CELEBRATES WITH PRIDE June is widely recognized as Pride month, where accomplishments and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community are celebrated.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan.

The Stonewall Uprising is documented historically as a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States.

National as well as global celebrations include parades, parties, workshops, and art shows.

Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The first Pride month event in Colorado County took place at The Courtyard Wine Bar at Live Oak Art Center in 2020. What started as a small gathering is now an annual local event attended by hundreds.

This year’s Columbus Pride event was June 18 at the Courtyard Wine Bar at Live Oak Art Center.

Local artist and owner of Eastman Gallery in Garwood Richard Eastman is one of several local artists with artwork on display at The House during the month of June. “I thank all the organizers of the Live with Pride Art Event at The House. We sold so

many paintings and pieces of pottery,” Richard says.

Other area artists with work at The House include Jane Meldahl, Toni L Conner, and Billy Kahn.

Evey year the free public event has a DJ, food and fun for all. “This event is for everyone. Come out for a fun evening of art, drinks, food, music, and entertainment,” event planners say.

The House is located at 632 Walnut Street in Columbus. Hours are 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; 7:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Thursdays and Fridays, and 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturdays, but Sarah says, “Sometimes we’re just here. Come visit.”
