Gardening in the Ozarks Lantana, The Nature Show of the Garden…

June is a time that everything seems to be growing and thriving and putting on a show for all to enjoy. You already have your vegetables in and may even be close to harvesting your first Early Girl Tomato. Your annual flowers you planted from seed are up and almost ready to bloom. But what has truly amazed you is that new plant you tried this year. That being said, John Norberg Lantanas might just become your Sharp County go-to plant from now on.

Master Gardener Lantana is in the verbena family and does well as a summer annual in this area. They bloom continuously and require very little care, once they get established. They bloom from spring all the way up to the first hard frost. Lantanas come in a wide variety of colors that range from red, orange, yellow, pink, white, purple and a mixture of all these colors and hues. They grow on a woody stem and can get to be around 3 feet tall and two-three feet wide. There are a few white, yellow and purple ones that only get 1 foot tall,

but spread three-four feet. These do well on the sides of containers or edge of raised beds, so they can cascade over the sides and hang down.

Lantanas can adapt to most soil conditions as long as it is well draining. It likes six plus hours of full sun with occasional watering as needed. These plants do well in a mass planting of all one color or a mix of colors, or can be a focal plant in your annual flower bed.

Lantanas do well in the ground or in a container. These plants will “dead head” themselves and put on new blooms all season long. The flowers are small individual tubular-shaped with four petals that grow in clusters at the ends of the stems. The leaves are oval in appearance and generally a mid-green in color. They are deep veined and usually seem to be a bit hairy. When crushed, the leaves give off a strong odor. Between the odor and the fuzziness of the leaves, deer tend to leave this plant alone.

The cluster of flowers look almost like a tiny bouquet.

Each cluster starts to bloom from the outside and works its way to the center. The clusters can contain 20-40 tiny flowers. This is one reason it is an attractant for humming birds, butterflies, bees and pollinators. When you have a lantana blooming, the plant is like an ever changing “na-

Lantanas make for a perfect stand-alone plant, but also can be mixed with other plants like salvia, Penta, succulents, purslane and even the potato vine. In mixing these different flowers with the lantana, one will get some of the coolest containers or combinations in one’s garden.

So, there you have it, Lantana. Easy to grow. Continuously changing. Works well by themselves or with others. Deer resistant. Attracts humming birds, butterflies, bees and pollinators. But most of all, a never ending “Nature Show” right before your eyes.

60th ANNIVERSARY Louis and Betty Breece, of Ash Flat, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 27. The Breeces have four children, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

70th ANNIVERSARY Norman and Nova Decker, of Cherokee Village, Ark., celebrated their 70th anniversary. The couple was wed on May 24, 1952 in Rockford Ill. They have five children, 11 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

Birthdays 90 years and over and anniversaries 50 years and over will be picked up from the Villager Journal, The News and The South Missourian News and placed in Avenues Milestones when space allows.

Preserving the history of renowned children’s author

The very home where The Little House Series was created preserves the history of one of the most influential children’s authors in American history.

Located in Mansfield, Mo., Rocky Ridge Farm consists of two homes, the original farmhouse and The Rock House.

According to lauraingallswilderhome.com, after moving to Missouri from South Dakota, Laura and her husband, Almanzo, purchased a 40-acre farm that had a one-room log cabin where the Wilder’s lived with their daughter, Rose, for the first Winter of 1894-1895. The following spring, the Wilder’s built a room onto the side, which was moved in the Spring of 1896 to its present location at the farmhouse and is now where the kitchen is located. Construction continued with a second room being added as well as attic space, which served as a bedroom for Rose.

After 17 years of living at the location, they

finished the house in 1913. The family also lived in a different house in Mansfield from 1898-1911 while the first house was undergoing construction.

In recent years, the Wilder Family Walking Trail and the Rock House have undergone restorations. The trail is a great way for visitors to get the full experience of the farm as it was used by the Wilders to travel from their farmhouse to the Rock house.

in 1994. The home was built as a gift from Rose to her parents. This is where Rose, who was also an author, encouraged her mother to journal her childhood memories and the pioneer experience.

The Rock House is where Wilder, at the age of 65, penned the first four books of the Little House series.

Previously, Wilder honed her skills by writing articles for the Missouri Ruralist, according to historicmissourians.shsmo.org.

“In rewriting her autobiography as fiction, Laura focused on her childhood, and wrote each volume about a specific time in her young life. (An exception is her second book, Farmer Boy, which is about Almanzo’s childhood in New York.) Little House in the Big Woods is about her family’s life in Wisconsin. Little House on the Prairie describes their time in Kansas, while On the Banks of Plum Creek is based on their stay in Minnesota. By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie, and These Happy Golden Years are all focused on Laura’s remaining childhood years in South Dakota.

While each story’s main theme was drawn from real life events, Laura left some facts out and added fictional elements to make the books more attractive to young readers. Rose continued to live at Rocky Ridge Farm during most of this time, serving as Laura’s editor and helping to get Laura’s books published. Rose even published pioneer stories of her own,” was stated on the site.

Wilder’s first book, Little House in the Big Woods was published in 1932, and “received praise and critical acclaim,” as did all the following volumes in the series, which were published between 1933 and 1943.

Stepping back in time, Old World charm in Hermann, Mo.

Story By Renee Janes PHOTOS By Brandi Norris If you’re looking for a unique trip, look no further than the historic town of Hermann, Mo. Described as “Missouri’s Most Beautiful Town” and voted a “Best of the Midwest” destination by AAA members, the village is full of OldWorld charm.

Located approximately an hour west of St. Louis, it is “a picture book village where clock towers and steeples rise above tidy brick cottages. When church bells toll, the imagination drifts easily from the banks of the muddy Missouri to the Rhine.” (hermannmo.com) Hermann is known as the “heart and soul of Missouri Wine Country,” according to visithermann.com. Wineries in the town and surrounding areas sell approximately 200,000 gallons of wine a year with approximately onethird of the sales statewide.

The roots of the village are contributed to when the German Settlement Society of Philadelphia chose to seek an area to colonize. According to visithermann.com, they were “dismayed at how quickly their countrymen were being assimilated into American society, the Philadelphia Germans dreamed of a new city. They wanted to build a new city in the “Far West” that could and would be “German in every particular.”

A schoolteacher serving as an agent for the society, George Bayer, traveled to Missouri in 1837, where he bought 11,000 acres of steep rugged land. Oblivious to the terrain, city planners in Philadelphia were developing plans for flat land. This did not deter them from making Main Street 10 feet wider in Hermann than in the City of Philadelphia.

After arriving, many of the first settlers were upset with the wilderness terrain and “vertical acreage.” However, they persevered and prospered by using the land to their advanAVENUES • June, 2022 13

tage.

“Making the best of a bad situation, the Germans took their cue from Mother Nature. They planted vineyards on the rocky hillsides, where wild grapevines grew with tangled abandon. A decade later, steamboats brought St. Louis visitors to Hermann’s first Weinfest, where they enjoyed more than their share of sweet Catawba wine and marveled at the grapevine-covered hills.” (visithermann.com) The town’s winemakers became incredibly successful with Stone Hill Winery becoming the second-largest winery in the country, even winning gold medals at world fair competitions.

At one time, the main income of the town was from a brick factory. Many of the original buildings are made from the brick produced at the factory.

“In its glory days, Hermann served as a frolicking river port with a tavern on every corner and the largest general store between St. Louis and Kansas City.

“The party ended with the one-two knockout punch of anti-German sentiment provoked by World War I and the Volstead Act of 1919. Prohibition sent Hermann reeling into the Great Depression a full decade before the rest of the country. The only silver lining was that economic ruin put the town into a time warp.

“Today, Hermann’s Old-World charm attracts visitors in search of the quiet pleasures of an earlier era. Much of downtown is a historic district where brick homes from the 1800s hug the sidewalk in the traditional German style.

Story By Elaine Brown PHOTOS Elaine Brown and Submitted Revived tour of the Hardy Historic District reveals structural gems of the past The City of Hardy, nestled in the Ozark foothills of northern Arkansas just south of Mammoth Spring, is nationally recognized for its historic district. A non-assuming small community as cities go, population under 800, some of its residents, including this reporter, were not even aware of the nature underlying this national recognition until recently.

The Hardy History Association (HHA) has been busy preparing a resurrection of a walking tour of Hardy, which leads and educates curious visitors and uninformed residents through a myriad of old buildings and structures that are still standing, many still being actively used.

At a recent meeting of the HHA, President Darlene Wilson and Program Director Nannette Daugherty introduced two of its members who have been immersed in reviving the tour over many months of delving into old records, photos and personal accounts. Through all their dedicated efforts, HHA members Pene Hadley and Rebecca Ashcroft have put together a new Hardy Walking Tour Guide, available at the HHA Museum, designed to take you along a journey into the past and present. The guide allows the curious to lead themselves at their own pace through the real gems of the historic district of downtown Hardy.

Hardy earned its status in the National Historic Registry through the inspiration and foresight of Dr. Audrey Thompson, who made great leaps toward getting Hardy the national recognition as an historic landmark city in the national archives. Around 1995,

structures and buildings in the area, and initiated getting the buildings listed on the National Historic Registry. His concern was the ongoing deterioration and possible abandonment of the stone buildings in Hardy. By getting them on the registry, they might get some recognition by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program (AHPP), which could “encourage the continued preservation, protection,

youth and adaptive reuse of the building,” explained Ashcroft.

Dr. Thompson’s work as member and president of the Sharp County Historical Society had an historic impact on Sharp County, and particularly Hardy. In 1995, he was successful in getting state recognition of the historic nature of many of the buildings in Hardy. These rock buildings were built primarily

between 1880 and 1949 from local resources, and are located in an area between Kelly, Front, Church and Third Streets in downtown Hardy.

Hadley explained the process involved in getting a region declared as a historic district at the national level. Dr. Thompson painstakingly took all of the tedious steps necessary to get state and ultimately national recognition for Hardy to be listed on the National Historic Registry.

“We have an historic district that’s important to all of us,” Hadley reminded, adding, “We have some beautiful buildings out there that are worthy of maintaining and reflect our historical heritage.” She explained the main features that met the standards for Hardy to become an historic district were its architectural features. This helps us to understand why the preservation of these buildings is so important.

Thompson later commented, “My biggest achievement was getting the old downtown historic district of Hardy placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.”

What’s Cookin’ in the Ozarks?

The Collins Family Monkey Butter (Banana Jam)

By: Erica Frazier & Nancy Collins- Frazier Makes 2-3 Pints or 5 half pints.

5 bananas no brown spots.

20 oz. can of pineapple 1/4 cup of flaked coconut 2 cups of white sugar 1/4 cup of bottled lemon juice

First prepare canning jars and keep hot until ready to use; prepare lids.

1. Peel Bananas, then put banana slices, along with remaining ingredients in a large preserving pan.

2. Bring to a boil stirring often and then reduce to a simmer for the next 10 minutes 3. Cook until thick which may take as few as 10 minutes but may take as long as 20 minutes or more, depending on how much water content in pineapple and bananas.

4. While the mixture is simmering use a potato masher or a large sturdy slotted spoon to periodically mash the fruit down between bouts of stirring to prevent any preserves from sticking.

5 Ladle Jam into clean hot jars leaving 1/4" head space.

6 Use a plastic knife and pop any air bubbles you might see in the jam.

7 Wipe rims spotlessly clean and place sealing lid on top. Next screw a band onto the jar until its finger tight.

8 Process jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes if in half pints, 15 minutes in pints.

IF jar lids seal it will keep for a year in a cool dark place. If jar doesnt seal put in the fridge and they are good for three months. Enjoy!

A Local Tourist: Exploring Calico Rock

Story By Debbie Moore PHOTOS by DEbbie Moore and Donell Russell One of the Ozarks little known tourist treasures set atop some beautiful multi-colored bluffs on the White River.

These unique colored bluffs gave this charming place its name before it was even settled. The red, orange, blue, black, and gray colored bluff line resembled strips of calico cloth to the early explorers, so they called this area of the White River the “Calico Rocks.” This Ozark treasure is Calico Rock, Ark., and there is no other town in the United States by this name.

Calico Rock has a very rich history and heritage that

is just fascinating. It is the only town in America with a ghost town within its city limits. Over the long history of this town, it has survived fires, floods, booms, and hard times. While many main streets in America are a thing of the past, this is not the case in Calico Rock. The renovations and revitalization of the Historic Main Street is just amazing. If you haven’t visited this historic Ozark mountain town in a while or maybe you’ve never been, it is definitely worth checking out. Recently, my friend, Donell Russell, and I decided to play “local tourist” for the day AVENUES • June, 2022 25

on Historic Main Street in Calico Rock. We realized very quickly that a day wasn’t enough time to take in everything or to sample all the amazing food options!

We arrived early before many of the shops and cafes had begun to open for the day. Things were pretty quiet, and there wasn’t too much stirring. We took this opportunity to go see some of the views along the White River in what was shaping up to be a beautiful day!

The picturesque drive along the river took us to one of the three trout fishing boat docks and outfitter services.

These services range from full guided trout fishing trips with a guide, boat and equipment rentals, to everything 26 AVENUES • June, 2022

you need to fish from the bank. Some of them will even take folks out just to enjoy the views of the bluffs and wildlife.

The White River is known for its world-class trout fishing. Fisherman come from near and far to fish for trout along the White River in Calico Rock. For several decades, fishing has been the main tourist draw to this Ozark mountain town and always will be because the fishing in this area is truly world-class, but in the world of tourism there is always room for one more attraction or in this case a whole street of attractions!

When we returned to Historic Main Street, the shops and

cafes were just beginning to open for the day. We decided to have breakfast at “The Printing Press Café.” The building that houses the café was the town’s newspaper office at one time. As we waited for our food, we were treated to pictures, quotes, and a few old newspaper artifacts that adorned the walls of this delightful historic café. The atmosphere was not the only delightful thing in “The Printings Press.” The food was amazing! We highly recommend the desert and pastry case although everything we had was wonderful!

With fully bellies, we began to look around and snap a few pictures of the well preserved hundred-year-old store

fronts. Looking at these old buildings that have made up the Calico Rock skyline for over a century, we began to wonder, “What was it like here one-hundred years ago?”

Little did we know that very shortly when we toured the Calico Rock Museum, we would be transport back in time for just a little while and get a glimpse of what that moment of time was really like.

We were both immediately taken a back when I entered the Museum and Visitor Information Center. This was not your ordinary small-town museum. The outstanding military display and tribute drew us in instantly. The huge flag and mannequins in uniform representing branches of AVENUES • June, 2022 27

our military just left us in awe! I spoke with Gloria Sanders, the executive director of the museum, about how the museum started. That could be entire story in itself! It just goes to show you what a few people with a vision and love for their community can do! The revitalization of Historic Main Street Calico Rock started here! As we strolled through the excellent displays, we were taken back in time to the early days of our state’s history and the captivating history of this Ozark mountain Town. You could easily spend the most part of a day here and in the adjacent Tomlinson Art and Science Center.

The Tomlinson Art and Science Center has a display of notable artist and a hands-on science exhibit. Kids and

parents alike can enjoy exploring educational and fun activities in Biology, Physics, Astrology or solve a crime in the hands-on Crime Lab, and much more! These exhibits change so it makes for a new experience each time you visit! The museum and art and science center would make a great school field trip or a wonderful family outing.

We reluctantly left the museum wishing we had more time, but knew we needed to discover and explore more of what this unique town had to offer. We spent the rest of the day shopping and sampling our way up and down Main Street Calico Rock. The shopping included artisan shops with some very beautifully crafted items, quilt shop, unique gift shops, clothing stores, and antique shops. Of course, with all that shopping, we worked up an appetite!

We couldn’t pass by the ice-cream shop without a little sample, and the owner had just made some kettle corn!

We had to get a bag of that to go!

Our afternoon lunch was a wonderful pizza from Riverside Pizza. We decided to take our pizza to the picnic table located by the railroad tracks overlooking the White River. We definitely had a table with a view! As we were finishing our lunch, we noticed the old White River Hotel rising behind the row of historic store fronts on Main Street. We had heard it was being restored and was going to be a bed and breakfast, so we decided to check it out.

It was very evident this beautiful old structure was in the process of getting a make-over. We couldn’t resist a few pictures of this old beauty. I did contact the new owner and discovered that they plan to open later this summer! I was also happy to learn that they were doing their best to keep as much of the history and integrity of this iconic hotel intact. You can track the progress of the renovation on their Facebook page (Calico River View Inn).

After a little more shopping we made a stop by a newer addition to Main Street, Juniper’s Back Door. This new addition harkens back to the moonshine days of Calico Rock. Juniper’s menu includes delicious small plates, gin cocktails, and locally brewed beer. They have a tap room, a backyard beer garden, and what they call the speakeasy where local musicians provide entertainment or some down-home story telling. A great way to relax after a busy day on the river or exploring on historic Main Street.

Late afternoon brought us to Harts Cottage Flowers and Gifts.

I had been here before and couldn’t leave town without one of their frappuccinos! With frappuccinos in hand we headed

out to City Rock Bluff. The views of the White River and the surrounding area from City Rock Bluff are just spectacular! After a bit of back-roading and a short hiking trail to some great waterfalls that you can find this time of year after a big rain, we returned to Main Street for supper at “Between the Buns.” This is a great little hamburger and sandwich shop. We had our order made to go so we could find a pretty spot to watch the sun go down. Finding a pretty sport in Calico Isn’t a hard task!

We literally spent from sunrise to sunset exploring what this Ozark mountain town has to offer visitors or “local tourist.”

We can honestly say, “A day isn’t enough time!” Calico Rock is truly an Arkansas treasure. If you are planning a week-long vacation, a weekend, or a day trip, historic Calico Rock needs to be on your list! You won’t be at a loss for things to do!

ACNA’s February Artist of the Month: Betty Bosley

The Arts Center of North Arkansas’s June Artist of the Month is Betty Bosley, who learned at an early age that she could cartoon-up anything.

Having parents who were both cartoonists provided a nurturing environment for developing her natural

talent.

Born and raised in Wyoming, when Betty wasn’t roller skating, she was creating cartoons out of anything she saw—numbers, letters flowers. Items became personalities through her addition of faces, arms, and legs. In third grade, her teacher hung Betty’s cartoon of “Peter and the Wolf ” front and center in the art room—a proud, encouraging moment.

In her 20s, as a young mom living in Starbuck, Wash., Betty had many opportunities to create projects for her community—from the logo for the Starbuck Grade School to the huge wooden cartoon mascot displayed at the Dayton Bulldog Football Field.

Dayton Days Fair and Rodeo was a huge annual function in that farming community.

Advertising the famous Combine Races was Betty’s huge cartoon of a John Deere combine wildly flailing its arms while flying around the racetrack. Staked throughout the Fruits and Vegetables section were signs of numerous produce, possessing funny faces and pudgy arms and legs, all Betty’s creations which are still being used today.

The local golf course has a wooden six-foot cartoon

horse and cowboy which leads the way to the first hole. The same image is printed on all its custom golf balls and score cards. For years, Betty’s cartoon footprint was somewhere in the town, right down to the flags that lined Main Street. These experiences have provided many wonderful memories.

While farming in the Starbuck/Dayton area, Betty illustrated a children’s book, “Grant the Ant.” She also partnered with her friend Nancy and illustrated various cartoons on t-shirts which they marketed at various boutiques throughout Washington and Idaho.

Moving to Portland, Oregon, and leaving farming behind, Betty entered the world of interior design. She

created cartoon murals for children’s rooms and church nurseries with layouts of Noah’s Ark, underwater cartoon fish, Winnie the Pooh, and Ninja Turtles. Some of these designs evolved into cross-stitch patterns sold by her sister’s cross-stitch company Quiet Moments.

Years later, she moved to Southern California where she won a car on The Price Is Right. She worked toward getting her real estate license. While doing loans for the company for which she worked, she met her husband, Tom, the godson of Audie Murphy, the most decorated WWII war hero and, later, a film star. Tom’s dad performed with Murphy.

Eventually, Tom and Betty opened a Notary Public School for the state of California which they still own and operate. Then, Betty’s son and daughter opened a Christian home for challenged teens, called Masters Ranch, in Missouri. Asked if she wanted to move there and become Grandma to a variety of kids, Betty jumped at the opportunity.

In her spare time, she fell in love with fluid acrylics which helps satisfy that recurring artistic itch.

The possibilities of this medium are endless with the blending of various colors and metallics to create abstract art on stretched canvas, a clock—or a door. Her daughter’s Mexican restaurant in the San Juan Islands contains a vivid abstract bathroom door, a focal point for the tourists. While teaching acrylic painting to the young people at the ranch, Betty loves witnessing their artistic successes.

Perhaps Betty’s artistic statement is best expressed by her, “If you are creating artwork professionally or to satisfy your artistic hobby, forge forward and just enjoy the journey.”

With the mission to “promote a vibrant, creative community that inspires a life-affirming appreciation of and support for the arts,” the school is home to specialty craft and art studios to improve established skills or to expand participants creativity.

Weightless Wacky and Froggy By: Dewayne French Here we go again, high water levels, in most every lake we have in the Ozarks region. It seems like we have to add that into the fishing puzzle every couple of years. Water is like liquid gold, if you don’t believe me go out west or listen to the news talk about low water out there. We definitely have our share, but I would not want the extreme opposite of low water in our lakes and rivers. High water calls for a few adjustments to your lure offerings and even switching to a totally different tactics.

Have you ever fished weightless, kinda like an astronaut floating around in space does? Fishing a floating worm on light line and a light wire hook without a sinker is the way to go this time of year with the high water. You can also fish a frog on heavy line because you can throw it behind all the bushes and get fish out when they bite.

The floating worm has been around forever and each spring it catches a lot of fish. You can fish it “wacky” or the “traditional texas “ style, but just fish it because this thing will catch them good. A wacky rig is when you hook the worm in the middle to egg sac area and the worm will droop off each side as you twitch it along. The common way is to Texas rig the worm on a lite wire EWG hook.

On each of these you get better action with a small barrel swivel located up the line to add casting distance. It is still considered a weightless setup and works great when fish are spawning or guarding their fry. Use a 7’ med action Favorite spinning rod with 12-15 pound braid; attach the barrel swivel and add about 12 inches of 10 pound test mono or fluorocarbon with your choice of a octopus hook for Wacky rig or a EWG hook for Texas rigging. This is the finesse version of weightless fishing technique. As for colors

I go with something bright, like yellow, bubble gum, white, and also black at times.

With the frog you you want to beef up your tackle to a bait caster and 50-65 pound test braided line to muscle the fish out after they bite. I use a 7’6” to a 7’ 11” Favorite Baitcasting rod . With this setup you are going to cast the floating frog way behind everything in the water and work the frog back out and wait for an explosive hit. This is the heavy tackle version of weightless fishing, kinda of a boxing match with a bass. Frog colors are varied, but I stay with natural colors and use black or white also.

So if you have not fished weightless or even wacky I hope you will give it a try this year and try the worm finesse technique and the frog with heavy line. Fight the fish, take pictures and take advantage of the longer days we have.

Remember, we all “Live Downstream” so please pick up your trash and any other trash you see out floating around! Never discard old fishing lines in the river or lake!

Wear your life jacket, and tell your family your expected return times, and a general location of where you plan to fish.
