“BUILD YOUR DREAM HOME!”

BLACK WATER RESURFACING Story by Adam Powell

The Smith Mountain Lake region offers many beautiful lakefront properties, but one of the unfortunate casualties of living on the water is the weathering of docks and decks. For those seeking a proven alternative to improving the look and durability of their docks, decks, boat lifts, piers, boardwalks and walkways, there is Black Water Resurfacing, a local company that began in January 2021 and offers a product called Acryfin, an acrylic polymer coating that is used to restore, renew and revitalize deck paint, concrete stain, wood coating, exterior paint and other types of outdoor surfaces. Black Water Resurfacing co-owners John and Beth Williams, a husband-and-wife team, work together to provide a high-quality experience for their customers from start to finish. “If they have weathered, pressure-treated lumber on their dock and they’re worried about splinters or looking to replace it because it’s old and weathered, we offer an alternative to people with decks and docks — especially on the water,” said Beth Williams in a recent interview. “Our product, we do a coating called Acryfin. That’s the name of the product that we use. Nobody else can install it. Nobody else can get their hands on it except for us. We’re the only licensed installer and dealer in the state of Virginia.” In a little more than a year, Black Water Resurfacing has experienced tremendous local growth, as residents have told their friends and neighbors about the high-quality Acryfin product, as well as the first-rate customer service that the company provides. “We started in January of last year. That was our first year of business. We actually had a pretty stellar year last year. It took off a lot faster than we thought it would. It’s just getting that one customer to take the product on,” Beth Williams said. “It’s been a lot of neighbors. It’s been a lot of that.” Black Water Resurfacing engages in a multi-step process designed to extend the life of docks and decks. The Acryfin product has a warranty that can save customers thousands of dollars by not having to replace deck tops with fresh lumber or with alternate materials. The process also makes decks easier to walk on by minimizing the risk of slipping, while L AKE LIFE MAGAZINE

also minimizing the splinters that can often make walking and lying on older decks a miserable experience. “Acryfin started down in Florida and Charleston, South Carolina. It’s done very well at the coast,” Beth Williams said. “The sand and salt are a little bit rougher than our (conditions at the lake). The product has an aggregate mixed into it. It’s not as rough as sandpaper — you can still walk on it barefooted — but it gives you a better grip. So if you do have children or pets, they don’t slip and fall like you tend to with just painting it, because paint can get slippery. Our product is 100-percent water-based, so it’s environmentally friendly. It doesn’t have any oil or anything in it.” “It will give them an additional warranty on their lumber, so instead of having to replace it with a composite, or PVC decking, or even having to replace it with new pressuretreated lumber, we can salvage a lot of docks and decks,” she added. “If they’re already rotted, or existing rot problems, we can’t bring wood back to life from that. But we can protect it from weathering any further, and it minimizes the splinters you tend to get on those weathered docks. A lot of those folks have kids and grandkids, and they say every year they get really bad splinters. Our product helps with that a

neighborhood, and we coated that entire boardwalk last year,” she said. Beth Williams explained that there are some decks in the area that have been previously coated with oil-based materials, which the Acryfin does not adhere well to. In those cases, Black Water Resurfacing recommends sanding the surface down to remove any oil-based materials that may not allow the lumber on the deck to breathe. “Ours is a breathable product,” Beth Williams said. “Wood has got to be able to breathe, no matter what you put on top of it. If it is suffocating the top, there has to be enough room in-between the water and the bottom of your lumber on your dock, so that wood can breathe. If it does get wet, it has to be able to expel that and dry out. If they do have a product on it, and they do not know what it is, that’s when we tell them you may want to sand it. It’s up to them. We give them different options. We’ll email them a quote, and they let us know if they want to do it or not.” For those who may be interested in exploring what Black Water Resurfacing can do to improve the look and durability of their decks or docks, Beth Williams went into more details about getting the process started, as well as the typical timeframe for completing a project. “What we do is, a lot of times people just reach out to me,” she said. “They either see my ad on Facebook, and we have a couple ads in magazines and newspapers here and there. They usually either email us or call us. It’s just me and my husband — so you either talk to me or John. Customers seem to like that, because they’re not having to relay themselves 20 times. A lot of people will reach out on Messenger, and a lot of people will call us. But this year, people have been calling directly.” “I’ll take their name and number, get their address, and John or I will go out and measure whatever surfaces that they want coated,” Beth Williams said. “We come home and work it up, and see if the product, if the wood is in good enough condition to do. Usually we can get it done anywhere from 30 to 90 days. Sometimes my husband, if we have perfect weather, he can knock one job out in a week … Our turnaround time is not that bad. It just depends on the weather, because it has to be above 40 degrees. And then we can’t do it in rain.” For more information on Black Water Resurfacing, visit their website at BlackWaterResurfacing.com. They can also be reached by telephone at 540-352-7466, or via email at blackwaterresurfacing@gmail.com..•

lot, and it also gives them a non-slip surface.” “It’s a multiple step process,” she said of applying the Acryfin product. “What sets us apart from somebody just painting it or staining it, what we do is we go out and we clean it, which is pressure washing it. We pressure wash the whole surface, and we have to let that dry out completely. Then we do a primer, which is made by Acryfin also. It’s not a paint primer. It’s a clean primer, so that kind of seals the lumber in, if you will. It’s what sets us apart, because nobody else does that. That kind of locks the wood in, and allows our product to adhere to that better.” “We do two coats of our resin, which is Acryfin also,” she continued. “And then the customer chooses whatever solid color they want. And then we mix the aggregate in it, which also comes from Acryfin. We put two coats of that on. The first coat goes on and then has to dry completely, and then we put another full coat on, and it has to dry completely. Then the last step that we do is a UV clear coat on top, and then that has to dry completely. So that’s a multiplestep process. It does set us apart, which is why our product does better.” In addition to individual residential properties, Black Water Resurfacing has taken on larger commercial-scale projects over the past year, such as The Boardwalk in Moneta, as the company undertook resurfacing the entire boardwalk surrounding the 100-acre nautical-themed community. “They have a boardwalk going around the entire ISSUE 5

R&D LAWN CARE, DETAILING & PRESSURE WASHING Story by William Seidel Photos contributed

Smith Mountain Lake residents who want to clean up their yards, vehicles and driveways may have heard of R&D. Ronald Campbell and his son Dakota Campbell own and operate three businesses under the R&D name: R&D Lawn Care, R&D Custom Detailing and R&D Pressure Washing. The first of the three services from R&D that started it all was the lawn care business, which began in 2011. In the 10-plus years it’s been serving the Franklin County, Henry County, Roanoke County and Smith Mountain Lake areas, it has become a household name for those needing projects done in their yard. “I’ve had the same clients from 2011 that I still have today,” said Ronald Campbell. Ronald Campbell said R&D Lawn Care services involve maintenance for commercial and residential properties, mowing, landscape of mulch and rocks, planting trees, etc. Campbell said they work all four seasons and also offer to remove leaves and snow. They can service for as little as half an acre up to as much as 10 to 13 acres of land. The detailing business is run by Ronald Campbell’s son, Dakota Campbell. He said one year while they were at the Daytona 500 in 2018, Ronald Campbell, who managed both services at the same time back then, said his son looked at him and asked if he can run the detailing business instead of going to college. “My response to him was, ‘You already got an established clientele; you can either grow it or kill it,’” Ronald Campbell said. “And he has blew my mind at how well he has grown this business.” R&D Detailing can do full detailing in any vehicle. Options include shampooing of seats and carpets to get rid of dry stains, cleaning undercarriages and headlight cleaning. Ronald Campbell said they are planning to add ceramic coating as one of their service options. The third service, pressure washing, is something Ronald Campbell was familiar with doing in the 1980s, and he decided to offer it as a branch to the lawn care service. Like the detailing service, Dakota Campbell also manages the

Ronald Campbell said. “We make sure all of our customers get exactly what they want.” R&D Lawncare may be contacted at 540-263-0693. R&D Pressure Washing and R&D Custom Detailing may be contacted at 540-420-3020. •

pressure washing business. Service options that R&D Pressure Washing offers involve houses, boat docks, concrete, commercial buildings, sidewalks, vinyl fencing, semi trucks, RVs, etc. “Just about anything you can wash, we can wash it,” said Ronald Campbell. When one calls R&D for any of the three services, Ronald Campbell said if someone is wanting a quote for pressure washing, as an example, they will try to get there within the next 48 hours and give an estimate cost. They then schedule a date and try to get it done as quickly as possible. He said his background in engineering allows him to get a pretty accurate estimate. “Right now, I’ve got people calling wanting quotes on mulch work and stuff like that,” Ronald Campbell said. The motto that R&D has adapted over the years when it comes to their work is simple — you inspect what you expect. Ronald Campbell said living with this motto motivates him, his son and their employees to always have a mindset of expecting to succeed in any project they are tasked with. He added that they always double check after they’re done to make sure they have done everything that has been asked of them. “Before we let our customer have their vehicle back, it will be inspected. Before we bill the customer for a pressure washing job, we will walk around that property and make sure we have done everything the customer has requested,” ISSUE 5

SMITH MOUNTAIN WASH PROS Story by William Seidel Images show employees of Smith Mountain Wash Pros at work. Contributed by Smlwashpros.com.

Smith Mountain Wash Pros has been in business around Smith Mountain Lake and the surrounding area for more than four years and offers pressure washing services such as window cleaning, gutter cleaning and house washing. The company offers services to shopping centers, commercial buildings and residential homes, among others. David Earick, who is the founder of Smith Mountain Wash Pros, said when he first started his business, he had some experience doing it on the side while he was working full-time in the railroad business going on 10 years, but then he was laid off and had to find a way to provide for his wife, who was expecting to have their first child the following month. “I was scared to death,” Earick said of his situation at the time. The layoff threw Earick for a loop, as he said he was expecting to work his whole career in the railroad business and eventually retire. Before he was laid off, Earick worked as a sheet metal worker and pipe fitter working on locomotives in a diesel shop. L AKE LIFE MAGAZINE

He noted he first loved his job and was making good money, but working third shift and missing a lot of family activities, events and other happenings made Earick feel it wasn’t worth it near the end of his tenure. “I’ve missed so much over those past 10 years because of working in the railroad business,” Earick said. With his life and family’s life for that matter somewhat at a crossroads financially, Earick decided to take a leap of faith and start doing his own pressure washing service full time. He remembers starting out doing it by himself and noted it didn’t take long for him to take off and find success. As one might guess, with the early success that Earick was blessed with came the realization that he needed to bring some workers on board to help not only maintain it but to expand services to multiple clients at the same time. Earick mentioned that a typical day for him and his assistants consist of waking up early in the morning and answering 14

emails and returning phone calls. He then will meet up with his technicians later that morning and will go over what all is planned for the day, and that’s when they officially start their day. Sometimes, they will stay out past dark depending on the circumstances. Smith Mountain Wash Pros currently has multiple wash technicians and is in the process of hiring more. Earick said one of the main reasons for expanding is because the demand they get for their services has grown so exponentially that they have a waiting list, which might lead to some potential clients using another business. If one were to look at reviews on Google or Facebook, it’s easy to see why Smith Mountain Wash Pros has become a popular choice to choose for pressure-washing needs. It’s filled with five-star reviews with positive comments about the work the company does. “Shout out to Smith Mountain Wash Pros! Jack, Brendan and Will did an awesome job washing our house, porch, dock. Looks brand new now! Thank you. Highly recommend,” read one Google review. Another Google review read, “David and the SML Wash Pros team are our contracted fleet wash company that we use to wash all of our trucks in both Salem and another terminal in Maryland. I can always trust that the job is spectacular and fairly-priced. We deliver groceries for Kroger and Save-A-Lot so impressions and superior equipment are very important to us. SML Wash Pros has also cleaned my home awnings and there is no one else I would call to give my personal or professional business to! There is no competition!”

2022

“These guys are fantastic to work with! Repressive, friendly, clean, and on-time which is rare these days. Thank you for doing such a great job and for fitting us in so quickly,” read another review. Due to the company’s success, Earick said that not only does he plan to expand his business in the near future, but they have aspirations of opening their own pressure washer supply store and a shop to build skids, customs trailers and more for other professional pressure-washing companies. It’s been quite the path for Earick to get where he is after losing his previous job. He mentioned that one thing he is grateful for is no longer missing a lot of experiences with his family and being there for his children. He mentioned that his current career is kind of a double-edged sword — even though he is working a lot more than he did at his previous job, he still gets to spend all the special and important moments with his family. It’s a double-edged sword he wouldn’t trade for anything. “Even if the salary at my former career tripled, I still wouldn’t go back,” Earick said. Earick said this whole journey was part of God’s plan and was a big reason he kept the faith even when he was at his lowest. In fact, he believes God put this path before him so he could spend more time with his family. “That was definitely an act of God. Like everybody said, you don’t know his plan, but you got to have faith. I had faith, and God has never let me down. Obviously, I was a little scared but kept pushing forward with this business, and here we are,” Earick said. •

SML TRIATHLON RETURNS FOR 24TH EVENT

300th triathlon. Daggett finished second in the men’s 60-64 age division with a time of 1 hour, 22 minutes, and 40.9 seconds. Morris, who completed his first race back in 1985 and has fought through a cancer diagnosis in 2021 to continue competing in triathlons, finished with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute, 3.8 seconds. It was a heartwarming moment at the finish line as Morris made his way across the threshold amidst a roaring crowd and surrounded by numerous close friends, including Daggett. “It is one of the largest turnouts we have had in 10 years,” added Waldron. “Numbers were similar to participation last year. It was exciting to celebrate Dave Daggett’s 200th triathlon and Mike Morris’ 300th.” Virginia Amateur Sports, in partnership with the Kinetic MultiSports, received registrations for the Triathlon from 17 different states, as well as Washington, D.C., and Canada. “The event went really well,” said Charity Waldron, director of operations and media relations for Virginia Amateur Sports. “There were 328 registrations, and the rain held off until we were packing up, so we consider that a win.” The event kicked off at 9 a.m. at Smith Mountain Lake State Park on Saturday, April 30, with the athletes entering the water in waves from the beach for the 750-meter swim. Following the swim, the participants moved into the transition area where they transferred to their bicycles for a 20K bike ride and then back to the transition area to start their 5K run through the park. “It was my friend Suzie’s third time doing this triathlon, and my first,” added participant Francie Mann. “It was a great time, great event. We especially enjoyed the tribute to Mike during awards. We’ll be back!” The top three male and female winners were recognized, as well as the top three winners in each age group and gender, and top three team winners in each category were presented awards following the race’s completion. There were also awards for the Clydesdale, Athena and Military divisions, and finisher medals were awarded as participants crossed the finish line. There was also an Aquabike division in which participants completed only the swim and bike portion of the course. Jason McCormack of Charleston, South Carolina, placed first overall in the competition with a total time of 1 hour, 3 minutes, 36.1 seconds. Second place went to Nate Michener of Roanoke, who recorded a final time of 1 hour, 6 minutes, 13.9 seconds. Rounding out the top five were Aaron Church of Chantilly, who placed third overall, Chris Roy of Blacksburg, who placed fourth overall, and Ian Densley of Henrico, who placed fifth overall. Church completed the triathlon course in 1 hour, 6 minutes and 36.6 seconds, while Roy came in with a final time of 1 hour, 6 minutes and 51.8 seconds. Densley completed the course with a final time of 1 hour, 8 minutes and 8.6 seconds. In addition to the race being part of the Virginia & Maryland Triathlon Series, the race is also a part of the Virginia State Parks Adventure Series. •

The competitors ranged in age from 14 to 80, while two of this year’s participants celebrated significant milestones, as Dave Daggett of Roanoke completed his 200th triathlon, and Mike Morris of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, completed his L AKE LIFE MAGAZINE

MARTINSVILLE SPEEDWAY TURNS 75 Story & photos by Zach McKnight

•

Shown is David Pearson’s No. 21 Mercury for the legendary Wood Brothers at the 75th anniversary NACSAR race April 9 at Martinsville Speedway. Out of Pearson’s 105 wins, he only won once at Martinsville in 1973.

Not a lot of racing tracks last 75 years, but tucked away in Ridgeway, Virginia, Martinsville Speedway has done just that. Founded in 1947 by the late H. Clay Earles, Martinsville was carved out of the 340 acres that it sits on in Henry County. The first race Sept. 7, 1947, had just 750 seats but had a crowd of more than 9,000 in attendance. Martinsville is the only NASCAR sanctioned track that has hosted NASCAR Cup Series races every year since 1949. NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. became a 50 percent owner with Earles during the track’s early years. Nicknamed “the paperclip,” the track gets its name from its

two long drag-like straightaways and two tight radius turns. Each straightaway is 800 feet long, 55 feet wide, and each of the turns has a radius of 588 feet and 12 degrees of banking. It is also the shortest track on the NASCAR schedule with one lap at .526 miles long. The track was paved in 1955. Even through all this time, the seats and ammoniates might have been changed, but the track itself has remained the same for all this time. Today, the straights are asphalt and the turns are concrete. Clay Campbell has been the track president since 1988 and called it “the world.”

Each hot dog at Martinsville is $2, giving it the name, “the best deal in racing.” Martinsville also has a railroad track that goes behind the speedway. Another feature is that seating is close to the action. “Many historical and timely parts of the track people have seen and heard. There’s not a bad seat in the house. You don’t need binoculars to see the racing. You want to enjoy your stay,” Campbell said. For a driver, Campbell said there are few events a driver would rather put on their resume than winning at Martinsville. “It’s important to all drivers,” Campbell said. “There are few events that are as iconic to put on their check-off list. You win where all the other greats have won. You look at the guys who have won here; there’s the historical value. You are on a high profile list when you win here. You also have bragging rights. It’s not an easy place to win; some took a while to get their first win. To have that on your resume is impressive.” Lots of NASCAR greats have won many times at this track, including: Richard Petty (15), Dale Earnhardt (6), Darrell Waltrip (11), Jeff Gordon (9), Jimmie Johnson (9), Rusty Wallace (7) and Cale Yarborough (6). Denny Hamlin has the most wins for current drivers with five. Despite this, Martinsville has been a track at which “work has never been finished.” Campbell explained more. “From when my grandfather started it to when I took it over in 1988, from that day it has never finished nor it never has been,” Campbell said. “When you come back, you’ll see something different. You never rest on your laurels. This track has never been finished and never will be. It and we continue evolving with the time.” Seeing all the hard work pay off for race day makes it all worth it for Campbell. “When we finally get to race day, that’s when it all hits me all the hard work that goes into it,” he said. “It’s incredible when the national anthem and pre-race stuff is going on. It’s amazing how patriotic it is, and we got great race fans. Seeing all those people and everything what we did work for and to make thousands happy.” Campbell has a message for anyone who wants to attend a race. “Once you come, you’re sold on it,” he said. “So many stopped me that have been here for the first time — some from many states away — and said, ‘We’ll be back.’ They had a great time. They love what they saw, and we love a repeat customer.” As for the 75th anniversary race April 9 at Martinsville Speedway, William Byron ended up taking the checkered flag in his RaptorTough. com Chevy Camaro in the Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500. This was also the same weekend one year ago in which Byron almost lost his mother due to a mini-stroke. “This one is for my mom,” said Byron. “This same weekend last year, she had kind of a mini-stroke and was diagnosed with brain cancer. It means a lot to have her here, and it’s been a crazy year, but she’s doing great, and thanks everybody for the support. It’s cool to have her here.” After passing teammate Chase Elliott during stage two, Byron never looked back and dominated the rest of the way. Next race weekend for the track on the NASCAR schedule is Oct. 29-30.•

William Bryon and crew holds up two fingers in celebration at the 75th anniversary NACSAR race April 9 at Martinsville Speedway.

“It means the world. I’m one of the most fortunate people in the world,” he said. “I never looked at myself as the resident of the place. I’m blessed to be part of an organization like NASCAR.” Campbell thinks Martinsville has been in operation and with NASCAR for so long is because they reinvent. “Originally, in the 60s when tracks went away, my grandfather’s philosophy is to keep reinventing it and keep giving customers what they want,” he explained. Then, as time kept moving along, we kept moving along with it. We understand the needs for our fans are growing. You can’t do things now like you did 15-20 years ago.” One example of reinventing is the pre-race activities and Martinsville has placed a high priority with having something for everyone. “We want the fans to be entertained from the time they arrive to when they leave,” Campbell said. “We got interactions, driver appearances, stunt shows, kid zones, etc. We want the whole family to be here.” He explained further, “If you buy the pre-race experience with your ticket, you can watch the driver intros, get a handshake, and if you’re lucky enough, get an autograph. There’s something going on at all times of the day. You never know what you’re going to see. There is always something to make you want to come back. Traditions are some things that fans come back for. In 1964, a Martinsville tradition started where the winner would receive a grandfather clock. The clocks are produced by a local company, Ridgeway Clocks, and are a tradition that continues to this day. Fred Lorenzen was the first winner to receive the clock. Campbell described another Martinsville tradition: a Martinsville hot dog. “I challenge you to mention a conversation without the hot dog being mentioned,” he said. “Between us and say a ballpark dog, (the) biggest difference is it comes fully dressed with chili, mustard, slaw and onions. We’ve done 50,000 before. It’s a freshly made dog; it’s pretty special.”
