What is the Chamber of C

T

he Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce was chartered on March 6, 1916, by then Secretary of State, John G. McKay. It is a membership-based marketing cooperative made up of area businesses and non-profit organizations that realize that by combining their money, in the form of membership dues, they can increase their promotional powers and strengthen their economic

impact. In other words, if they all work together, they can get a lot more “bang for their buck” than if they each work alone.

The Chamber also serves as an area information center for tourist and potential new residents seeking information about the community, events and area businesses.

The Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit 501(c)(6) organization.

The Chamber of Commerce is not a government agency; however, it does represent “the voice of the business community” in situations that concern business or the quality of life in the community. The chamber also works with similar groups in lobbying efforts related to legislation that may affect our members.

ADVERTISING… AND MORE ADVERTISING Your membership includes a listing on the Chamber website, with a link to your site, as well as inclusion in the Membership Directory, which is printed once a year.

Chamber of Commerce members are encouraged to leave business cards, brochures, posters and other printed materials in the Chamber office for the scores of weekly visitors to pick up and for us to include in our mail response to email inquiries.

Members may email information to the Chamber office about their upcoming sales, promotions and/or events to be forwarded to other members (approximately 700 contacts) via email.

Members also have access to the Chamber of Commerce member list. Member list are ONLY available to Chamber members; this information is not distributed to any other individual or group.

TRAINING AND EDUCATION The Chamber offers resource materials on business building and expansion through affiliate members. It also provides periodic training on topics of interest to area business owners and managers.

PUBLICITY We will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, with media coverage, when you open your business, re-open, go under new management, etc.

The Chamber also encourages its members to host mixers, which bring people through your door that may never otherwise see what you have to offer.

BUT IT’S ALSO UP TO YOU: YOU GET OUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT! The Chamber Directors, Ambassadors, and staff will do all they can to assist you, but remember, this is a member-driven organization that is only as strong as its members. We welcome all questions and feedback from our members, as we don’t know what you want from the Chamber leadership unless you tell us. Your involvement is critical to the economic success of the Chamber and to the economic well-being of Grimes County!

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Our Chamber of Commerce plays a major role in economic development in Grimes County, and is the designated Economic Development Organization for the County. As such, we are active in recruiting new businesses, assisting startups, and participating on a local, regional and state level to have a positive impact on this community which we love.

he Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Program is one of the most important programs that the Chamber has to offer.

An Ambassador is a volunteer for the Chamber that represents their own companies while also promoting Chamber events, programs, as well as new and existing Chamber members. Ambassadors attend groundbreakings, ribbon cuttings, and after-hours functions. They help register and greet members at Chamber sponsored events and they are the core group of volunteers that help plan and operate the Chamber’s events.

CHAMBER EVENTS

Rib bbon Cuttting gs & Mixers Ribbon Cuttings mark the opening of a new business or a change in ownership or management, location or expansion. They are photo opportunities held at no charge to the Chamber member. We provide the ceremonial scissors and ribbon that are used, and we invite local media, Chamber directors and members. The member being celebrated is encouraged to invite friends, family and anyone else they’d like to have. These are brief picture-taking sessions, and the photographs and captions appear in the Navasota Examiner on a space-available basis.

Mixers are held as hosts are available, generally at least 10 times a year. Chamber members and the general public are usually invited. The after-hours get-togethers give people the opportunities to meet new business owners, visit locations they may not otherwise shop and network with their peers in a relaxed, casual atmosphere. The mixers generally include food, drinks, music and – most important – the chance to make casual acquaintances into friends. All Chamber members are encouraged to host mixers at their own place of business.

Worksh hops & Sem minars The Chamber hosts workshops and seminars for small business owners throughout the year. Subjects may include customer service, telecommunications, business planning, financing, etc.

Co offee with h the Chamber The Chamber of Commerce hosts monthly morning meetings that are generally held on the second Wednesday of each month for our member merchants and businesses to discuss matters of importance to them. Topics may be announced in advance or may be general discussion. The location also may change as different businesses host these events.

The Chamber Academy is a series of workshop lunch-and-learns presented by the Navasota Grimes County Chamber of Commerce. If your company would like to host a Chamber Academy session, please contact the Chamber office.

Rea al Esstatte/ Deevelop per Meetings The Chamber of Commerce hosts one to two realtor/developer meetings in Grimes County, and usually one regional meeting in Grimes or surrounding counties. These are an excellent opportunity for realtors, developers and peripheral businesses to hear updates on local projects.

Bu usineesss Expo Each year the Chamber of Commerce hosts a business expo at a location in Grimes County.

Chamber member businesses are encouraged to participate by having a booth with merchandise from (or information about) their business.

Sta ate of the Citty The Navasota State of the City meeting is hosted each January by the Chamber of Commerce and the Navasota Examiner. This event is where business, community, faith and non-profit leaders come together to hear a recap of the prior year and a preview of what is expected for the new year.
