at Princeton Theologocal Seminary in Princeton, N.J.

A little over five years after leaving the White House in 1913, William Howard Taft was at Greenville’s Laird Opera House.

Woodrow Wilson was born in 1856, during his father’s first pastorate at First Presbyterian Church in Stauton, Va.

He spoke on Thanksgiving Day in 1918. The Borough of Mercer also actually has a pretty strong connection to 28th president Woodrow Wilson.

Before being elected president in 1912, Wilson served as president of Princeton University, then governor of New Jersey.

Local newspaper the Mercer Dispatch & Republican noted that he was an able and respected educator. His father, Joseph Ruggles Wilson, who was born in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1822, served as principal of the Mercer Academy in the early 19th century.

As president, he led the country into World War I in 1917 and was the leading architect of the League of Nations.

He came to Mercer after graduating valedictorian from Jefferson College in 1844, studying alongside George W. Zahniser and John L. Rodgers, both of Mercer.

Mercer Academy was in existence for more than 30 years, before being sold in 1856, with the proceeds being used to establish the Mercer School District.

Local newspaper the Mercer Dispatch & Republican noted that he was an able and respected educator.

The academy structure was destroyed by fire in 1879.

After his time in Mercer, Wilson went on to Western Theological Seminary in Allegheny, Pa., before studying

On Aug. 27, the county will host the Lake-to-Lake Paddle challenge, a 30-mile race on the Shenango River from the Pymatuning Lake to the Clark Recreation Area at the Shenango River Lake.

It passed the crown in 2022 to French Creek, which also spends some time flowing in Mercer County.

While the Shenango will see a lot of traffic on Aug. 27,

it’s used all season long by paddlers who bring their own craft and others who rent from businesses like Carried Away Outfitters in Greenville’s Riverside Park and near Pymatuning Lake, and Pymatuning Rentals & Information in Jamestown.

It will be open to kayaks, surfskis and racing canoes. The Shenango River Watchers also traditionally hold paddling festivals, including their Spring Paddle Fest scheduled for June 4 at Pymatuning State Park.

y r o t s i H y r a t i l i M Greenville sent 1,150 to serve in the First World War, lost more than 45 in World War II — and more in the wars in Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East — but the area’s military history extends even farther back.

According to the Centennial Edition of The RecordArgus, there isn’t any record of a Revolutionary War soldier settling here, but in the War of 1812, Col. Andrew Christy — who would later be buried at Stevenson Cemetery outside Greenville — raised a battalion that included many Greenville men, to join Gen. Crooks’ brigade in Pittsburgh.

Christmas strike against the Hessians at Trenton, N.J., and the crossing of the Delaware.

At the Battle of Princeton Jan. 3, 1777, the British shot his horse out from under him, surrounded him, beat him with muskets and stabbed him. He died nine days later.

Two other battalions from Greenville also fought in the war. Back further, although not the home of General Hugh Mercer, the town and county are named for the Revolutionary War hero. Mercer was born Jan. 27, 1725, in Scotland, and after graduating from Marischal College, and becoming a doctor, he volunteered as an assistant surgeon for the force of Prince Charles Edward. After Edward’s army was defeated in 1745, Mercer sailed to America, first landing in Philadelphia, then heading to sparcely populated western Pennsylvania. He took part in French & Indian War campaigns throughout the war, and in November 1758, Mercer was left in charge of a skeleton crew in what is now Pittsburgh, constructing Fort Mercer as temporary fortification. When the Revolutionary War broke out, he was made colonel of the Third Virginia Infantry and had under his command the future President James Monroe. In 1776, he was commissioned a brigadier general, and later the same year, took part in the

k r a P e t a t S d r a d d o G This summer, Goddard State Park and its Lake Wilhelm will celebrate their 50th anniversary.

More than 70 farms were acquired for what was determined to be fair market value. The dam was completed in 1971, and the recreational facilities were dedicated in 1972.

What were they before 1972? Farmland, mostly. As far back as 1770, the 2,860 acres now known as Goddard State Park was used for farming and for lumber. What’s now under Lake Wilhelm was mostly untilled fields and pastures, timber and farmlands.

This summer, Goddard State Park and its Lake Wilhelm will celebrate their 50th anniversary. With yearly floods plaguing the nearby Borough of Sandy Lake, starting in 1967, the Soil Conservation Service began construction of a dam, and the state acquired the land that would become the park through eminent domain.

The lake was named in honor of Lawrence J. Wilhelm, who, as a Mercer County Commissioner and a Soil and Water Conservation District director for the county, was instrumental in the development of the park until the time of his death in 1968.

The park itself is named for Maurice K. Goddard, an Army veteran who was appointed secretary... The park itself is named for Maurice K. Goddard, an Army veteran who was appointed secretary of the Bureau of Forests and

To help mark the big anniversary, the Friends of Goddard will hold a 50th anniversary celebration on June 18 with artisans, live bands, a craft show and food vendors.

Five years later, in 1937, she was attempting to be the first woman to complete a circumnavigational flight of the globe, when she and navigator Fred Noonan disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. They were last seen on July 2, 1937, in New Guinea.

. . . o d o t h c u m So Mercer county has so much to do, especially for outdoor activities. Get outside and enjoy!

Park and on East Lake Road near Pymatuning Lake; Pymatuning Rentals and Information on Gibson Street in Jamestown; and others rent the crafts.

Kayaking & Canoing The popularity of kayaking and canoing has grown by leaps and bounds over recent years, and with the Shenango River named River of the Year in 2021, there might be no better time than right now to hit the river. Thanks to the Shenango River Watchers, the Shenango River has been cleared from Pymatuning Lake to Big Bend, just before the Shenango River Lake.

And to be sure, the fun isn’t limited to the Shenango River. Pymatuning Lake, Lake Wilhelm and Shenango River Lake have options and nearby rentals.

Fishing & Boating Canoing and kayaking have picked up a lot of popularity in recent years, but fishing and boating are two timeless local favorites. For those looking to fish, local lakes and rivers offer a lot of great options.

Anglers can find bluegill, perch, bass, muskie and walleye in Pymatuning, Shenango and Wilhelm lakes, but each has its specialty. Wilhelm is great for bluegill and bass. As a larger lake, a lot of anglers head to Pymatuning for larger fish, like muskie and walleye. Whereas Shenango has done a lot of work to improve the size of its crappie. One of the more popular fishing rivers, the Shenango River, is

stocked with trout. As for boating, all three lakes offer marinas and docks, with Shenango set apart in that it offers areas of unlimited horsepower.

Swimming Swimming options in the area may be one of its hidden gems. Pymatuning Lake and Shenango River Lake both offer swimming options. Pymatuing Lake has three beaches – Linesville, Main Beach and Beach Two — and as a state park beach, the Department of Consevation and Natural Resources says the beach and parking areas are limited to 75 percent capacity. Chestnut Run Swim Beach at Shenango River Lake is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Both facilities do not have lifeguards.

Hiking With many cooped up inside during colder months, it’s nice to get out into nature. Rich in nature, Northern Mercer County has several hiking trails. There’s the five-mile Shenango River Trail, which starts at the Kidds Mill Covered Bridge on Kidds Mill Road, and follows a former towpath along the former Erie Canal Extension. Greenville’s Riverside Park offers a nature trail through the woods of the park, along the Shenango River.

Visitors can find the trail by parking at Carried Away Outfitters in the park, with the trail starting just across the the river. A fishing pond is also tucked in near the nature trail. The Goddard McKeever Hiking Trail connects the 12-mile paved bike path with the former McKeever Environmental Learning Center. Pymatuning State Park offers the 2.5 mile Spillway Trail, starting at the Spillway parking

lot, along a former railroad bed, and growing.

Biking and Running For those who like their recreation a little faster, there are plenty of running and biking options available. A crushed limestone trail from Greenville’s West Main Street to Porter Road is hugely popular with both runners and cycilsts, and connects with a multitude of more mileage. There’s the loop around Riverside Park off Alan Avenue; there’s the mile loop of the West Salem Sports Complex just up Porter Road from the trail. The Sports Complex is adjacent to the wide berms of Route 58, which travels from Greenville to Jamestown and Pymatuning State Park; in Greenville, there’s the loops of Shenango Valley Cemetery next to Thiel College; and the miles and miles of streets and sidewalks in Greenville.

d n u o r g p m a C n w o t s e Jam WEST SHENANGO TOWNSHIP — Fans of Pymatuning State Park’s Jamestown Campground may have been sad to see the campground close for work last summer, but park officials say they think campers will be pleased to see what they’ve done with the place.

While that represents a net decrease in bathrooms, Park Resource Manager Dan Bickel noted that more RVs have bathrooms these days when compared to when the wash houses were first put in more than half-a-century ago, meaning there’s a decreased need.

The big project replaced the campground’s six aging wash houses. The new facilities come with heat and address ADA needs, providing 27 familyassist-style restroom facilities, also providing more privacy.

There will also be a new basketball court in the beach area, and the newly-replaced camp store will be climate controlled, meaning no more melted candy bars.

Runners and cyclists will also see some improved surfaces, as the work to extend the multi-use Spillway trail is wrapping up.

Started as a way to highlight the town’s museums, Greenville’s Heritage Days has grown, evolved and overcome to celebrate their 15th year this summer.

Super Cruise soar past 1,000 entries in 2021, also hosting television crews to nationally televise the huge show.

The Greenville Museum Alliance — the umbrella organization for the Canal Museum, the Greenville Area Historical Society’s Waugh House museum, and the Greenville Railroad Park and Museum — held the first event on July 5, 2008, with a special focus on getting attendees to the three museums.

Over the years, the weekend of events has hosted the United Eastern Lenape Nation; military reenactors from the Civil War to World War II; and baseball games that pit the local 50-plus squad versus the high school team.

The event has expanded to as many as four days and has seen the Super Cruise soar past 1,000 entries

It’s held unique challenges, like the frozen T-shirt contest, which has participants break into a frozen shirt, with the first person able to get it on winning; and the G-mazing Race, a contest patterned off TV’s “The Amazing Race,” which sent contestants across town to answer trivia and take on challenges.

About 2,000 people showed up that first year.

It’s offered tons of music in the park, as well as through what it previously called its USO show — a patriotic, military tribute.

The second year, the day-long event added a 5K, its patriotic music show and the ever-growing Heritage Days Super Cruise.

offered all kinds of kids fun from games — including a chance for kids to pick up hula-hoops, jump ropes and other toys that have been hits over the years, but aren’t used as much nowadays — and bounce houses and other amusements. And although it started centered around the Fourth of July, it’s branched out to other holidays, hosting a drive-thru Halloween event; a Christmas light decorating contest; an Easter egg hunt and more. Organizers have also soldiered through more than their fair share of rough patches.

Park, the event moved up the hill to a patch of land owned by Thiel College; only to be canceled

The event has taken over responsibility for the community’s annual firework’s display in 2020, like virtually all events because of the pandemic; and having to scale back in 2021 as the virus lingers. For 2022, the event plans to continue to evolve.

While the Heritage Days itself, the Heritage Days Super Cruise and what has been known as the USO show have all, in the past, been packaged into one weekend, they’re spreading out in 2022. The patriotic music show planned to take place on Memorial Day; the Super Cruise will be July 2; and Heritage Days proper will be July 9 and 10.
