If you went to a Danville Otterbots baseball game last season, you might be familiar with the name Wyatt Sutton. Now, the Ringgold native will join the Otterbots front office as the coordinator of fun. General Manager Austin Scher explains why he chose Sutton to be in this role. “Wyatt is the heartbeat of the ballpark when the gates open; he’s the first face people see when they come in. He made sure games went off without a hitch and fans were always engaged. I knew I had to find a way to bring him in full-time.” Scher would explain how he found Sutton. “He applied for a few different roles, and it became clear he had the personality and the drive. He was the perfect fit,” he said. “The growth from opening night to the end of the season was immeasurable. The things he did from the “Let’s go ‘bots” chant to leading the fans in crowd karaoke; he was a superstar from day one.” Sutton says, “The Danville Otterbots were hiring for the game day staff. I originally wanted to do the mascot position, but Austin mentioned the on-field emcee. I didn’t see it and had no clue what they did, but I ended up getting the spot and had a great first season.” Scher said this position has not been offered before by the Otterbots and also said Sutton’s most important piece with this new role is instead of him creating smiles during the game, he will be doing the same thing on a larger scale such as for a shirt, season tickets or in the community. Scher made it clear with this new role, Sutton will still be on the 10 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

field, but he will also have a more direct role in the direction and entertainment process. Sutton said while he is not always outgoing, he feeds off of the energy of others. “It’s pure adrenaline,” he says. While the new position has come with nerves, Sutton wants to be as big of a piece of the community as possible. “I want to be able to help the Danville Otterbots grow but also bring the community together and being baseball back,” he says. Sutton would explain what makes everything he is doing worth it every day. “My favorite part has got to be at the end of the night, when everyone is walking by and they say “Thank you.” or, “You make the games fun.” Maybe someone comes in when they had a fight with their spouse or an argument with their boss, knowing I can make an impact and make a difference for a few hours.” Scher said the Otterbots would not be the same if he did not find Sutton. “We knew we wanted to change the face of entertainment. As soon as I talked to Wyatt, I knew he could take things to the next level immediately. I couldn’t imagine not having him on the field this year, having him here full-time. We created an atmosphere where every fan had something for them. We went from a baseball team to an entertainment center. We are an entertainment center with baseball being played.” “This is just the start if a widely successful career for him,” he said.•

In a blink it’s over. It took around 45 seconds for dogs of all breeds — from tiny terriers to barrel-chested Dobermans — to complete the course. It wasn’t size that mattered, but rather speed, accuracy and the ability of owner and dog to communicate effectively and they navigated jumps, hurdles, tunnels and more. For three days, owners and their dogs recently participated in agility trials at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex in Chatham. The Danville Kennel Club sponsors the event and participants were there to earn points toward an American Kennel Club title — as well as for a sense of connection. “It’s about spending time with your dog. Doing things together,” said Wade Maki of Greensboro, N.C. who was there with his dog, Gkar.

Courses were designed by a dog’s shoulder height, which meant the smaller dogs competed on one course and the larger dogs on another. The larger dogs, to include border collies, Dalmatians, standard poodles and an Irish water spaniel, not only jumped hurdles, but had to navigate over a see-saw and an A-frame, sit and stay on a table — often breathlessly panting or barking —before explosively taking off again and finished by jumping through a tire. The smaller dogs — lots of Shelties, a Corgi , a Papillon, several terrier breeds and more — leapt over hurdles, ran through tunnels and all had to make it through the weave pole obstacle — a series of vertical poles that the dog had weave in and out of correctly. There could be no mistakes.

One dog, who became confused during the course, seemed to sense his owner’s disappointment at the end, as his head drooped as they walked out of the ring. Other dogs seemed pleased with their performance, and one even leapt into his owner’s arms at the end of the trial. The day included dogs that were rather new to agility, such as Gkar, who has been at it about a year and a half, said Maki. Others were more accomplished, such as Little Boo, a fiveyear-old Norwich terrier who finished second in his breed in an American Kennel Club invitational and will compete in Westminster in June. “We liked the sport so much that we got two more Norwich terriers,” said owner Jennifer Lee of Raleigh, N.C. During the trial, it’s up to the owner to communicate to the dog

where to go next. Prior to the beginning of the trial, the owners are given time to walk the course and figure out how they will navigate the obstacles and where they will turn and signal their dogs. When the dog arrives at the starting point, it’s his or her first time on the course. If a dog makes a mistake, it’s probably because it got the wrong information from its handler, said Paige Wiseman with the Danville Kennel Club. Christina Tracey of High Point, N.C. said it takes about a year or so to train a dog for an agility trial. It starts with teaching the dog how to handle the obstacles and the handler how to run the course and make the necessary turns and switches. “You’re not just training the dog, you’re training the handler,” said Tracey. Before the large dog trial, owners and handlers walked and jogged the course multiple times, practicing how they would turn after each obstacle and how to direct the hand signals their dogs used to navigate the course. During the trial, the owner runs along with the dog — and it moves fast. “We go to the gym so we can run with the dogs,” joked Mary Opperman, who was there with her Border terrier, Beemer, from Clayton, N.C.

AKC agility trials can have six different categories, and each have different levels depending upon the dog’s experience, according to the American Kennel Club. It begins with novice and moves up to the highest level, excellent or master, where dogs have successfully completed the open level, which has 1618 obstacles. Dogs must be at least 15-months old to compete. Henry, a shetland sheepdog from Williamsburg, has earned the master level and is now working on excellent, said his owner, Scott Brown. His other Shetland Sheepdog, Leo, is a master jumper and master agility champion. Brown said it took about two years to get his dogs where he wanted them to be. “It’s a gradual thing,” he said. And Henry especially loves agility trials. “He gets super excited,” said Brown. Besides the awards and accolades — and the tasty treats after a trial — there is a more sublime reason to compete. It allows an owner to develop a deep connection with their dog, she said. For those interested in watching the dog agility trials, the Danville Kennel Club is hosting three more events at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex this year — June 24-26 and Dec. 2-4.•

Southside Virginia has long been home to many excellent farmers markets, which provide local residents with high-quality fruits and vegetables, home-grown by local farmers and gardening enthusiasts, as well as the best in locally-produced jams, jellies, baked goods, arts and crafts, all at affordable prices. In Pittsylvania County, there are two outstanding options for residents to find first-rate produce and homemade goods without having to set foot in a grocery store. These options are available in Danville and Chatham, and provide residents a chance to 16 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

shop during the week as well as on weekends at various points in the year. Over the last decade, the Virginia Grown Farmers Market, located at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex at 19783 U.S. Highway 29 in Chatham, has been providing locals with top-quality goods. The covered open-air market features a wide variety of baked goods, hand-made crafts and fresh produce. “I think they started doing the Farmers Market there (at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex) in 2011,” said John D. Harris,

The Virginia Grown Farmers Market at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex is kicking off the new season on Saturday, May 7 with its May Day Bazaar, which is being held as part of the popular annual Hundred Mile Yard Sale that runs across the state of Virginia. The ODAC Farmers Market kicked off 2021 with the May Day Bazaar, and is once again hosting this special event to welcome the new season. “As part of our Farmers Market experience, we’re going to have the May Day Bazaar, which will be on the 7th of May,” said Harris. “It’s a food and craft fair kind of thing. It takes place in our main facility, in conjunction with the Hundred Mile Yard Sale, which happens on Highway 29. The Hundred Mile Yard Sale goes from Charlottesville all the way to Danville.” Following the May Day Bazaar on May 7, the Virginia Grown Farmers Market at the ODAC Complex on Highway 29 will be open on Fridays and Saturdays - Fridays from 4 -6. p.m., and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to noon. ODAC will start an official Farmers Market campaign, offering coupons and promotional items, starting on Memorial Day weekend. At various times throughout the spring, summer and early fall months, visitors can expect to find a wide range of seasonal

items, all grown or handmade by local farmers and crafters, at the ODAC Farmers Market. “The selection is according to the season,” Harris explained. “The summer has its own seasons. At the beginning of the summer, you’re going to get some of the spring vegetables, like onions, lettuce, kale, that kind of thing. There will also be honey. There’s meat products. It’s a pretty good variety of things. And as the summer goes along, then it will become more of the seasonal summer items like tomatoes, cantaloupes, watermelons, cucumbers, squash. And then by the time you get into September, you get into the late-summer type items. Still tomatoes, but also potatoes and that kind of stuff.” The Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex and Olde Dominion Agricultural Foundation is proud to support this local Farmers Market in Chatham as a way not only to promote and assist local farmers, but also to promote sustainable local agriculture in the region. “With the Agricultural Complex and the Agricultural Foundation, our mission is to support local agriculture,” Harris said. “Any kind of local product, we want it to show up out there at the Farmers Market. We want those local farmers to feel welcome. It’s a very inexpensive entry fee into that Farmers Market - we charge five SOUTHSIDE | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | 17

dollars for the weekend to come and set up your items. We offer coupons during the summer as part of our promotional items, so that people can have an incentive to come out there and buy from our local farmers. We’re super farmer friendly. That’s our mission at ODAC is to ensure that the local agriculture community is supported.” The Danville Farmers Market, which is located at The Crossing at the Dan at 629 Craghead Street in Danville, also kicks off the new season on Saturday, May 7 with its annual Opening Day. “We’re open every Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon from May through the end of October,” said Kenny Porzio, an official with Danville’s Parks and Recreation Department who serves as Manager of the Danville Farmers Market. Operated by the Danville Parks and Recreation Department, the Danville Farmers Market has been a staple of the local community for over a century, and has been located at The Crossing at the Dan for the last quarter-century. “It’s been in this building since 1996, but the Farmers Market 18 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

has been in downtown Danville at this point for probably about a hundred years,” said Porzio. “It’s a social event. People love talking to the folks who are making or growing what they are buying. They can talk to them about how it was made, or what went into it. They like the social interaction with the vendors. And then for the local crafters and farmers, it’s a great marketplace for them to be able to come and sell their items.” The Danville Farmers Market, similar to the Virginia Grown Farmers Market in Chatham at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex, hosts local farmers and crafters who personally grow or create the items they sell. All are local to Southside Virginia, and all are personally involved in creating or producing the items that they sell at the Market. “This is a growers-only market,” Porzio explained. “So everything here must be made or grown by the seller. Some things people can expect to find here will be seasonal produce, honey, meats, jams, jellies, crafts, and baked goods. Local vendors and farmers, and everything is locally-made and locally-grown.”

In addition to the Saturday Farmers Market at The Crossing at the Dan, there is also a Wednesday Farmers Market held in the months of July and August from 1-6 p.m. each week. “That’s a much smaller market,” Porzio said of the midsummer Wednesday Farmers Market. “It usually has about eight to ten vendors every Wednesday in July and August.” In recent years, local consumers had a third Farmers Market in the area - the Competition Alley Farmers Market in downtown Chatham. But the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closing of the Competition Alley Farmers Market. “The Competition Alley Farmers’ Market was a fabulous project of Chatham First, a 501c3 nonprofit corporation comprised of volunteers dedicated to the threefold mission of enhancing quality of life for community members, supporting local businesses, and attracting tourists to our area,” explained Amy Davis, a representative of Chatham First and former director of the Competition Alley Farmers Market. “Unfortunately, COVID killed our Farmers Market,” Davis

continued. “It was spatially prohibitive to hold the market in compliance with social distancing requirements. When mandates were relaxed and lifted in midsummer 2021, we tried to resurrect the market, but our vendors had moved on and we couldn’t get things re-kindled. We miss the market dearly - it was so great for the town.” Despite the loss of the Competition Alley Farmers Market, the Farmers Markets at the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex and The Crossing at the Dan live on, and are looking forward to thriving once again in 2022 with the support of the local community. PBS “Life of a Musician” to be filmed in Danville Story and photos by Diana McFarland

Danville resident and musician Brandon Lee Adams is working on a PBS series featuring sit-down conversations with well-known musicians and will be filmed at various historic homes in the city.

Singer and songwriter Larry Cordle is one of several country music artists who will appear later this year in a PBS series to be filmed in Danville. Danville resident Brandon Lee Adams, a singer and songwriter himself, is putting the series together, which will be filmed in various historic locations in downtown Danville. Filming for episode three “Life of a Musician” was scheduled for April 8 at a historic home on Millionaire’s Row. Prior to filming, Adams and Cordle shot the breeze in Adams’ 1885 Victorian, also located in the Old West End. Although separated by age, Cordle and Adams both grew up in Lawrence County, Kentucky, so the conversation touched on childhood memories, such as corn cob fights and hoeing tobacco, to their shared experience with the intricacies of the music industry. Over his more than 40-years in the business, Cordle has worked with such well-known artists as Ricky Skaggs, Garth Brooks, Tricia Yearwood and Reba McIntyre. Today, Cordle recently had the #6 song on the Bluegrass charts. One of Cordle’s best-known songs, “Highway 40 Blues,” was recorded by Skaggs and released in 1983. Other artists to be featured in the series include John McEuen with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Grammy-award winning artist Carl Jackson, Shawn Camp, who was nominated for Songwriter of the Year by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music and who wrote billboard topping chart songs. Other music notables to appear on the show are John Jorgenson, who played for Bob Dylan and Sting, as well as Australia’s Queen of Bluegrass, Kristy Cox. In all, there will be 11 half-hour segments that will be aired 20 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

on Blue Ridge PBS beginning this fall. Some episodes are in two-parts and the show can be expanded, depending on who agrees to appear, said Adams. Adams said the format would be similar to his laid back conversation with Cordle that day in his living room, followed by a performance of three songs in selected historic homes in Danville. Adams will also be offering two ticketed house concerts in May and June, with details to be released at a later date. For the first season there are no rules, said Adams. “We’re trying everything.” Adams said he’s received assistance from the City of Danville, as well as the state, in putting this together. Sponsors include the Santa Cruz Guitar Company, Beyer Dynamic Microphones and Friends of the Old West End. Adams, who has appeared on the Grammy-nominated album, “Celebration of Life: Musicians Against Childhood Cancer,” released his first studio bluegrass album in 2014. He has also performed a duet with Jackson on “30 Long Years,” on the album “Time That I Was Leavin’” and released in 2018. Adams has appeared as a guest artist on two Grammy winning albums and has worked with notables such as Jackson and Tony Rice. Adams said he grew up listening to “the big names.” “You just daydream,” he said of being a child in Kentucky strumming his thrift shop guitar. “I never imagined I ‘d get to do any of this stuff,” said Adams. Adams and his family moved to Danville in March 2020. He often performs at the Golden Leaf Bistro in Danville. •

“The biggest thing is year one was sprinting to the finish line, quick turnaround. This year, having an entire offseason, staff that know the area, promotional schedule. It’s going to be incredible. It’s encapsulated in our 2022 rally cry: Bigger, Better, Botter.” Since players won’t arrive until May 30th, Scher says it’s tough to say what the team’s biggest strengths and weaknesses are. However, he did name a few players who could make a big impact: Tyler Judge, Brock Tibbitts, Ty Acker, Conner Dykstra and RJ Johnson. “I think up and down there are people that can have monster seasons,” said Scher. “The biggest strength is going to be continuity. The best thing about the league as a whole is it’s a developmental league. These guys have been on MLB draft boards, playing in front of scouts, playing high-level college ball.” Scher did not list specific goals the team has, but instead called what the team does “community first.” “Everything we do is community first,” he said. “We put baseball and softball back in the schools and encouraging students to stay active. Everything we do is community based. When we get to the end of the game and 40,000 leave with a smile, that’s the biggest thing.” On Sept. 25, 2020, Major League Baseball officials announced the Appalachian League would transition from its role as an MLB-affiliated minor league to a collegiate summer baseball league. The Chatham Star-Tribune followed it, and in a previous article, it states the league “became a part of the Prospect De-

velopment Pipeline, a collaborative effort between the MLB and USA Baseball that establishes a player development pathway for amateur baseball players in the United States, and will be a part of the identification and development process for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team and other future national teams.” To start the new league, the 10 teams decided to undergo the process of changing their names and logos to incorporate symbols and images necessary to their respective local communities, to be adopted before the 2021 season. The Otterbot name is a combination of nature and machine. The otter was chosen because it symbolizes the Dan River — not just the wildlife, but also the river’s historic importance to the Dan River Region as a prelude to prosperity, convoying jobs and culture to the city. The robot, which team owner Ryan Keur said marks the first robotic mascot in all of Minor League Baseball, encompasses the region’s role as a leader in STEM education, pointing to the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research and the Danville Science Center. Going into next season, Scher said one of the games to watch for is the rivalry game with the Burlington Sock Puppets. According to Scher, the Sock Puppets are the Otterbots’ biggest rival. With similar promotional mindsets, banter back and forth, Scher says it’s a cannot miss game. However, the biggest thing for the Otterbots is not improving on the team’s 29-24 record from last year, but on providing entertainment and helping the roster along the way. “It’s good to win ballgames, but the biggest thing is providing affordable family entertainment, helping develop every one of 32 members on our roster on a personal and professional manner” Scher said. “We ended last season as the hottest team in the league. I do know the league as a whole is incredibly talented, but we have to wait and see when the guys hit the field what things look like. Ideally, we go 58-0 but knowing if we’re having fun and people leaving the ballpark with a smile is a highly suc-

cessful season.” In the east division, the teams consist of the Pulaski River Turtles, Princeton WhistlePigs, Danville Otterbots, Bluefield Ridge Runners and the Burlington Sock Puppets. For the west division, you will see the Greeneville Flyboys, Elizabethton River Riders, Bristol State Liners, Kingsport Axmen and the Johnson City Doughboys. Materials were provided in-part by Columbia Forest Products, and construction was completed by Otterbots spring ballpark operations intern, United States military veteran and civil engineer, Luca Cicilese. “The Hughes Center is excited to partner with the Otterbots to create this awesome addition to the baseball stadium,” said Alison Waymouth, director of business development for The Hughes Center. “The sensory room will be another piece of inclusion added to the park that welcomes and supports everyone in our local community while also extending a warm welcome to surrounding areas. Our goal is to have an outlet for all to have a positive, relaxing and accommodating experience. The noise and excitement at a game can be overwhelming, but the sensory room offers a place to reset and make it more enjoyable and accessible for everyone.” Danville’s American Legion Field will be the first park in the Appalachian League to have a dedicated sensory-friendly room inside the gates, and one of few in non-MLB ballparks. The Danville Otterbots have added a new feature for fans this season — a Ballpark Sensory Room — designed to assist children with sensory sensitivities and their families enjoy Otterbots games and non-baseball ballpark events all year long. Presented by The Hughes Center, the new sensory room will be equipped with cuddle swings, fidget boards, soft LED lights, wall-to-wall padding, uniquely textured rugs, sounddeadening headphones, comfortable chairs, sensory-friendly fidget toys and a blackout curtain. The curtain can be opened to reveal a window overlooking the Kids Zone, so parents can maintain a view of non-sensory averse siblings or friends during their time in the sensory room. It will be located on the concourse in the right field Kids Zone. “Since our first day in Danville, our goal has been to build a product and atmosphere that provides entertainment for every single member of our community, and every visitor to Danville and the Southside Virginia region,” said Otterbots general manager Austin Scher. “We took tremendous strides towards reaching that goal in our inaugural season, but we knew we still had work to do.
