This year’s Festival will be different

By Henry E. Green This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Abbeville Spring Festival, and consequently, it will provide something special.

The schedule of events, for example, will be a little different from that in years past, according to information supplied by the City of Abbeville.

All month long during the month of May, the Greater Abbeville Chamber of Commerce will feature a 40 years of memories exhibit, featuring items from the various festivals over the years.

“Moments and Mimosas” will be held on Saturday, May 7, at the Chamber, and the Rotary Cornhole Tournament will be held at the Livery

Stable on Saturday, May 7.

Shop Local Saturday will be presented on Saturday, May 7, in the City, and on Sunday, May 8, there will be a Mother’s Day Gospel Event at the Abbeville Opera House.

Restaurants will offer specials May 1-14 throughout Abbeville.

On Monday, May 9, there will be a Food Truck Alley on Trinity Street, and on Tuesday, May 10, there will be a Violins of Hope Outreach at the Abbeville Opera House.

There will be a 40th anniversary proclamation on Wednesday, May 11, in the Abbeville City Council chambers of the Opera House.

The main weekend of the Festival is slated for May

12-14. All weekend there will be carnival rides, food trucks and live music.

On Friday and Saturday, there will be an arts and crafts show, as well as a flower show.

On Saturday, there will be a Kidzone on Washington Street, as well as an antique car show and a doughnut eating contest.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Abbeville Rotary Club, a service club which has a scholarship program and engages in a number of projects to serve the community.

The Violins of Hope outreach will bring a number of violins to the Opera House.

These violins, which will be on display, are part of a

project to provide a remembrance of the Holocaust, as noted in a program presented at a recent Rotary Club meeting.

Presented by the City of Abbeville, the festival is held in downtown Abbeville, and typically draws a crowd estimated in the thousands.

Its economic impact on the city is considerable, according to a recent City Council report.

Spring Festival is awardwinning event

By Henry E. Green You probably knew that the Abbeville Spring Festival attracts thousands of people to downtown Abbeville every year.

You probably knew that you could get everything from wings to elephant ears, and listen to just about every kind of music.

But did you know that this yearly gathering place of good times can also be classified as “award winning?”

Yes, the Abbeville Spring Festival was recognized as the best 1989 festival with a community population of 5,000 to 15,000 during the S. C. Governor’s Conference on Tourism and Travel.

The award was presented to the City of Abbeville by festival chairman Julye Harris on Feb. 13, 1990.

So says the program from the 1990 festival--May 5-6, 1990, to be exact.

Spring Festival programs are time capsules, giving the reader a taste of the atmosphere, the people, the businesses, and the music from which the festival sprang.

This year, the Spring Festival will be celebrating its 40th anniversary, and much has changed since 1990--and much has not.

The City of Abbeville now presents the festival. Years ago, the stage was in front of the Abbeville County Courthouse, and now it is just north of the Square.

Music is still a big part of the event, as are crafts, rides and--of course--food.

The rides used to be located behind the Abbeville Opera House, and now they have moved to Court Square.

Abbeville County, S.C. Spring Festival Tours Saturday May 14, 2022 1. Burt-Stark Mansion

Hours: 1:30 - 4:30 PM on Sat., $10 Admission. Located at the intersection of North Main and Greenville Streets, 400 North Main St. Abbeville, SC. Phone: (864) 366-0166 Built in the 1830s by David Lesley, this fine Southern mansion was built in Greek Revival style. Its most famous owner was Maj. Armistead Burt, a U.S. Congressman who served with CSA Pres.

Jefferson Davis.

On May 2, 1865, the Last Council of War meeting was held in the Burt-Stark house with Jefferson Davis in attendance.

The James Stark family obtained the house in 1903 and it stayed in that family until James’s daughter, Mary Stark Davis, deeded the house and antique furnishings to the Abbeville County Historic Preservation Commission.

The original cook’s kitchen is in the back.

2. Historic Abbeville Walking Tours

Hours: Available Any Time. Free Admission.

Take a walk through the history of Abbeville.

3. Abbeville Chamber of Commerce

Hours: 10 AM - 4 PM, Free Admission. Located at 107 Court Square in Abbeville.

Built in 1858, this building housed the Bank of SC until 1865 when it closed due to the demise of the Confederate economy. Later, it became the National Bank of Abbeville. The building survived disastrous fires on the Court Square that destroyed others.

Today, the building serves as the Abbeville Welcome Center and Chamber of Commerce. The lobby features five massive Wilbur Kurtz paintings completed in 1922, making them 100 years old this year!

These paintings depict the history of Abbeville. Wilbur Kurtz was a historical consultant for the movie Gone with the Wind.

4. Trinity Church

Hours: 12 PM - 4 PM, Saturday. Free Admission, but church restoration donations are appreciated. Located at 600 Church St. Mr. Lewis Ashley will be performing organ music during the festival.

Spring Festival Tours Cont’d

Sat. May 14, 2022 Built in 1860, Trinity Church was designed by George E. Walker of Columbia, SC, in the Gothic Revival style. This monumental brick church, stuccoed and scored to resemble stone, has corner buttresses and a tall octagonal spire that soars 125 feet. That steeple was built by an 18-year-old at the time! The church is noted for its beautiful chancel window and organ. The church has recently undergone massive preservation work. Many notable Abbevillians attended this church and are buried on its grounds.

5. Poliakoff Collection of Western Art

Hours: 9 AM - 3 PM, Free Admission. Located at 1407 North Main St. inside the Abbeville Library The library houses the late Dr. Samuel R. Poliakoff Collection of Western art. The collection includes 100 pieces of southwestern pottery and textiles as well as western paintings and bronzes.

This is listed as a S.C. destination site for those interested in Native American arts.

6. McGowan-Barksdale-Bundy House

Hours: 11 AM - 4:30 PM Saturday, $10 Admission. Located at 305 North Main St., headquarters of the Abbeville County Historical Society.

Built in 1888, this fine Queen Anne Victorian home was listed

in the paper as “the most expensive house in town” when it was completed.

The home of two generals, CSA Gen. Samuel McGowan and WWII Gen. William Barksdale, the McGowan-Barksdale-Bundy house was given to the Society in 1989 by the late J.D. Bundy.

It is a museum house which is heavily furnished with period Abbeville furniture and many local artifacts. The Franklin and Ann Pursley Railroad Museum is located in the basement and the associated old railroad caboose park is located on the back grounds. See the three servants’ quarters buildings in the back as well, two of which are 1857 Gothic Revival with plaster walls.

7. Abbeville County Museum

Hours: 11 AM - 4 PM Saturday, Free Admission.

Located at 309 Poplar Street (Back of the Opera House).

This circa 1854 building was designed by Jacob Graves as the County jail for about a century.

Behind this old building, note the circa 1815 Conservation Cabin that was moved here. The Abbeville County Historical Society took over the museum’s operation and property for Abbeville County just a few months ago in order to keep it open for the public.
