Our days are longer, school years are winding to a close and temperatures are starting to once again rise. It can only mean one thing: summer is here.

With children home for the summer, families will undoubtedly be looking for activities to do together in the coming months that lead into the next school year, and that’s where we hope to come in.

In this edition of Paris Life, you’ll find a number of stories aimed at highlighting just a small number of the things you can take part in during these fun summer months. From a story highlighting all the summer programs one can find at their local library, to a story about downtown shopping with a brunch stroll to a story about a community garden open to anyone. The Red River Valley is home to a vibrant community, and there’s always something to do.

And with prices for many things — most notably fuel — rising to alarming levels in recent weeks and months, it’s all the more reason to stay close to home when looking for something to do this summer.

TONI CLEM Toni Clem has written the Deja View column since 1984. She has been married 51 years to Paris attorney A.W. “Plug” Clem of the Moore Law Firm, and has two grown sons, Chivas and Bachman. She had a Public Relations/Marketing firm, T.Clem & Associates, from 1986 to 2016. She is a graduate of the University of Texas/Austin, where she started graduate school. She continued that at Texas A&M Commerce, where she was a graduate instructor in political science. When she and Plug moved to Paris in 1969, her first job was ‘Society Editor’ for The Paris News. She left that to be press secretary for Jim Farris’ congressional campaign. She is an active member of the Northeast Texas community.

Shannon McGuire is a graduate of Roxton ISD, after which he played collegiate basketball for four years and graduated from both Grayson County College and Wayland Baptist University. He also graduated from Dallas Bible Theological Institute. He has been employed for the last 22 years at Collin County Juvenile Probation Department serving as the Court/Legal Liaison for Juvenile Detention and Probation in the 417th District Court Collin County, Texas. He has been pastoring for 11 years and currently serves as Senior Pastor at Paris New Generation Church, 1513 Lamar Ave. in Paris. He is married with two children.

R

esearch suggests that community gardens promote social health and community cohesion in addition to improved nutrition.

And for those who take advantage of an opportunity to get their hands dirty and be close to nature, a community garden fosters improved physical activity and mental health.

A colorful butterfly mural watches over a community garden located on the Paris Regional where people can come and gather fresh vegetables free of charge, and lend a hand in the garden’s care.

Started in Paris five years ago with a Health4U grant awarded the Paris-Lamar County Health District in 2017 and a collaboration with the United Way of Lamar County and Paris Regional Medical Center, the garden has evolved over the years.

“Just like anything else, it’s trial and error,” said Kayleigh Thurman, with Heath4U. “So over the five years, we’ve found what works and doesn’t work, and there is always room for improvement.”

Different than before when people were encouraged to adopt one of the 12 raised beds that make up the garden, and plant whatever they wanted, the coalition this year structured things a bit differently by planting each bed with a different produce.

“So that’s helped tremendously to keep it organized,” co worker Kathy Ward said. “And we've installed an underground irrigation system with a timer so keeping the garden watered at appropriate times will not be as difficult as before.”

Each bed not only features a different produce, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, okra, onions, eggplant and peppers, but each bed has an information sign that gives planting instructions.

“So, the sign tells how tall the plant grows, the distance between plants and how many days until they mature to actually harvest time,” Thurman said. “We are hoping people who visit the garden may want to try this at home. It would give them a little information so that they would know what to do.”

Also new this year are miniature food pantries stocked with canned goods from the Lamar County United Way. “We are going to attach a wire basket to those mini food pantries,” Thurman said.

“So, for example, right now (early May), the onions are ready to be picked. “So we are actually picking a few and putting them in the basket so someone can easily just come out and grab them when they’re getting canned goods. We have recipe cards that we’re putting in as well.”

Ward explained how the butterfly mural came about, and how she hopes it is used by the community as a photo opportunity.

Designed by Paris Junior College art proessor Lena Spencer, the mural was painted last year by student volunteers and dedicated in October during a hospital-sponsored monthly “Walk with the Doc” event.

“There was a costume contest and during the time we also did a contest to vote on what hashtag we wanted people to use - plantedinParis- in displaying photos on social media,” Ward said.

“One of the points of the mural was to bring attraction and awareness to the garden as well as being a photo opportunity,” Thurman added. “People can take pictures in front of the butterfly so it looks like they have wings.”

During the October event, community garden enthusiast and former Enloe cafe owner Bobbi Jan (Sam) Lester, who now lives a half-mile away in an apartment complex shared her testimony of being a partially disabled person after a wreck that almost took her life, and how much she enjoys the garden.

“I’ve always enjoyed gardening and I raised vegetables for my cafe,” Lester said from the community garden last month. “I gather enough vegetables to can and share with others, but there is no way I can keep up as much as the garden produces. I really encourage others to come out and take advantage of this opportunity.”

Dr. Amanda Green, with both Paris Regional Medical Center and the Paris/Lamar County Health District, and involved in the garden since its fruition, said the community effort was designed to have many health benefits.

“Vegetables grown locally are one of the best sources of nutrients,” Green said. “We also hoped that it would encourage people to be active as a place to walk, or bike, and as a fun photo spot that one could include in a Paris photo scavenger hunt. The public art that Lena Spencer created also helps with emotional health as a pace to rest and enjoy the beauty of nature.” u

Bobbie Jan Pickering is a regular at the garden, helping with its upkeep and harvesting its produce, some of which she cans and shares with neighbors in the nearby apartment complex where she lives.

A New ChApter Of Summer fuN Paris Public Library gets kids excited about reading and learning Story by Tommy Culkin, photos submitted

S

ummer is here, and children are no doubt enjoying a reprieve from school before returning to class in August. But just because the classrooms are empty doesn’t mean kids need to take a break from learning, and that’s where the Paris Public Library comes in.

The local library has a slew of fun, entertaining and educational activities planned all throughout the summer months, and library director Tim DeGhelder and children’s librarian Tracy Clark are excited to keep minds fresh in children of all ages.

On May 27, the library kicked off its June reading club, Splash Kingdom.

“This is a one-month program, where they have to read 10 hours or 10 books,” Clark said. “When they register, they get a log, and if they finish on or before (Saturday, June 25), their name goes in a drawing for Splash Kingdom tickets. But they only get their name in the drawing if they complete it, that’s the thing.

The program is invaluable, Clark said, in its ability to keep children’s reading skills sharp in between school years.

“People don’t realize how fast a child can lose their reading skills that they’ve been working all year with a teacher to hone,” she said. “Reading skills, phonics, fluency — if young readers just take three months off, that can really be detrimental. … Because there’s no testing involved like AR, we want them to read on their level, but we also want them to read for fun.”

“Fun” is something the library will be supplying a lot of this summer. All throughout June, the Paris Public Library has scheduled fun and entertaining acts.

The first big act they have coming is Brett Roberts, a high-energy magician who incorporates puppets and slapstick humor into his act. He’ll be performing at the library Friday, June 10 at 11 a.m.

The week after that, on June 17, magician and comedian Terry Cunningham will be performing at 11.

The library will fill with music on June 24 when Will Parker brings an interactive performance of singing, dancing and songwriting to the library.

And on June 29, the Texas A&M Chemistry Road Show with Professor James Pennington will give kids the chance to ooh and ahh at a number of cool experiments.

“That’s something I’m really excited sci for,” Clark said. “It’ll be these fun science experiments, like watching chemical reactions, mixing things together and watching them change color — that sort of thing.”

Many fun summer activities have already begun. On May 14, the library partnered with the Texas Master Gardeners for Green Thumb Day, where children were able to enjoy the outdoors and read books on gardens, plants and garden the outdoors, with several local gardeners leading the discussions and fielding kids’ questions.

“Some of the books (read as part of the program) are ABC’s, where each letter corresponds to a different word to do with planting or growing,” Clark

said. “Others are stories about gardening, and some are educational and nonfiction, but all are appropriate for that age.”

After that, the children taking part planted a seedling on the library’s grounds to watch grow in the months and years to come.

On May 27, the library helped sponsor a petting zoo, where kids came and got up close and personal with animals such as a hedgehog, a tortoise, a monkey, a ferret and more.

And all year long — not beholden to just the summer months — is the library’s Pre-K Story Time. Every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m., children ages 3-5 fill the children’s room in the library for a guided session with singing and dancing, reading and other fun activities.

“At a recent story time, we had 38 children,” Clark said. “With parents and everything, we had probably over 50 people in the room. So it’s definitely a hit. It’s

educational and it’s a chance for them to make friends. I know a lot of them really look forward to it, like, ‘Today is Wednesday! Today is library day!’

“They’re learning and they don’t even know they’re learning. We’re always working on following directions, listening to instructions and different things like that.”

The library also has a program incentivizing young readers to read 1,000 books before kindergarten. For every 100 books young children read, they get a special pin and other goodies, DeGhelder said.

“The little ones are so excited when they come in with their logs,” Clark said. “This gets kids really excited to be readers, and that’s the goal.”

There are other ways besides special programs and activities that the library is aiming to encourage reading, too. Since the start of 2022, children read free — meaning there are no longer late fees on children’s books and other children’s material checked out.

“If you check out 10 kids books and bring them back a day late, there’s no fine; if you check out 20 kids books and bring them back weeks late, there’s still no fines,” DeGhelder said. “Try to bring them back when you can, of course. But if you forget to bring them back and miss the due date, the last thing we want is for you to feel discouraged from coming back and using the library because you’re worried about those fines, which really can add up pretty quickly.”

And to help people get the most out of their library, DeGhelder said the library will be expanding its hours in the summer months.

“Currently we’re open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, 10 to 8 on Tuesday and on the rest of the week 9 to 6,” DeGhelder said. “I want to add one more evening, so Tuesday and Thursday will be 10 to 8. If you have a two-income family, and both parents are working during the day to make ends meet, or you’re a single mother or father, we’ll now have two days where you can come until 8, even if you can’t make it during the day.” u

ome downtown Paris shops have come up with a way to shop, have a little wine and contribute to a good cause all the same time.

One Saturday each month the stores get together to hold a Giving Back Brunch Stroll in the downtown area of the city.

“It was my idea,” said Chelsie Michael, the owner of Belle Ame Boutique at 102 Clarksville St. “I was looking around on Instagram and I saw someone in Dallas doing a $10 wine walk to raise money for their security patrol.”

She thought, we don’t have that, but we can do a spinoff of it.

“I thought what a great idea to raise money for nonprofit organizations,” she said.

“You can shop local, eat local and give back local,” Michael said. “It gets people downtown and gives back to the community at the same time.”

The strolls started late last year and the next one is June 11. They normally fall on the second Saturday of the month.

Stephanie Leonard, owner of the Picky Piglet also on Clarksville Street in downtown, has been on board since the start of the monthly stroll.

“We wanted to create a fun shopping experience for the women in the community, while also giving back to one of our local nonprofits,” Leonard said.

She keeps that theme of giving back in the products she sells, too.

For instance, she carries a line of stuffed animals under the brand name of cuddle + kind.

“For every one they sell, they donate 10 meals to children,” she said.

She also supports other businesswomen like the local woman whose handmade items she sells.

“I want to carry lines that give back and support other female entrepreneurs,” she said.

The brunch stroll concept is simple.

Start at one of the shops that is participating, pay the participation fee and get a wristband, grab a glass of wine, and start your shopping adventure. All the while you will be contributing to the charity of the month.

“You can go at your own pace,” Michael said. “We will have signs up to show who is participating, so they will always know where to go for the brunch stroll.”

Some of the other downtown shops that participate or have participated include Head Over Hill, Soho Boutique, Smokin Hot, Girls Night Out, She Broke the Mold, Livin On the Edge Boutique, Paris Baby, Olive Paris, Small Town Flair, Poppy Petals Boutique, Mustard Seed Boutique, Stay Golden, CBD Paris, Sun Dream Collective, Rosewood Local Eatery, Paris Plant Shop and Erth Apparel.

The first walk was in October when the downtown businesses raised $1,060 for its first beneficiary, The Children’s Advocacy Center.

The next month the group of businesses was able to donate $1,030 to The Red River Valley Downs Syndrome, she said.

“We don’t keep any of the proceeds,” she said. “The businesses supply the drinks and snacks with our own money.”

Other groups that have benefited from the monthly event are CASA for Kids, the United Way and the Paris Pregnancy Care Center.

“The groups are so thankful for what we are able to raise,” she said.

June’s beneficiary is the Boys and Girls Club. u

W

hen it comes to online gaming, Sony’s PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services have fallen short in the competition against Microsoft’s Game Pass. The latter service has long been widely available outside of the company’s console, the Xbox, and it features Day One game releases — and for many, that’s worth the cost of the service by itself.

Sony’s not ready to make its top-tier titles available Day One on a subscription service just yet, but it has finally gotten the hint that it needs to do more for subscribers. Rumors swirled for months that the company was preparing to do just that, and that time has come.

This month, Sony is rolling out its revamped PlayStation Plus service — a combination of the previous two services. What’s new? There will no longer be a PlayStation Now. Instead, gamers can choose between three tiers of PlayStation Plus.

First, there’s PlayStation Plus Essential. This is basically what PlayStation Plus is now. The tier will include two monthly downloadable games, discounts, cloud storage for game saves and online multiplayer access. Even the price will stay the same: $9.99 per month, $24.99 per quarter or $59.99 per year.

The second tier is PlayStation Plus Extra. For $5 more per month ($15 more per quarter or $40 more per year), gamers get everything in Essential and be able to access a catalog of up to 400 PS4 and PS5 games, including PlayStation Hits. You’ll

also be able to download the games to play.

The third tier, PlayStation Plus Premium, gets the works from Essential and Extra, plus up to another 340 games, including PS3 games to stream and PlayStation, PS2 and PSP games to stream and download, cloud streaming for PS4 and PS5 games and time-limited game trials. This tier will cost $17.99 per month, $49.99 per quarter or $119.99 per year.

Basically, Sony isn’t changing the price of the two services it offers now. It’s just combining the services.

If you’re someone like me who subscribes to PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, Sony says it will combine the services and you’ll pay the new combined price when you renew. I always picked up PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now subscriptions around Black Friday when they were on sale, so I’ll be interested to see if the PlayStation Plus Premium service goes on sale when it’s my time to renew.

The latest update by Sony Interactive Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan before this magazine’s publication provided rollout dates. In Asia, except Japan, Sony moved the new services on May 23. Japan will follow June 1, then the Americas on June 13 and Europe on June 22.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed there’s no bugs or glitches with this rollout. Lord help Sony if there’s an outage for any length of time because something doesn’t go right.

Game of the Month Mario Strikers™: Battle League Publisher: Nintendo Rating: E10+ Price: $59.99

Let it never be said that world famous plumber Mario is a couch potato.

Through the decades, Mario has battled friends and enemies, played just about every sport and even puzzled some minds. This month, we’ll see Mario and crew head back out on the soccer field for the first time in 15 years.

“Mario Strikers Battle League Football” is coming to the Nintendo Switch on June 10.

This third game in the Mario Strikers series, which includes “Super Mario Strikers” on the GameCube and “Mario Strikers Charged” on the Wii, features soccer with a “Mario Kart” twist. I mean, where else can you toss a banana peel at the opposing team without getting a card from the referee?

Tossing items is just the start of it. Players can literally slam their opponents, kick them into electric barriers and pull off special moves that will send the other team scrambling. Not only that, but the gear you equip will affect your appearance and your gameplay, so customize wisely.

“Mario Strikers Battle League Football” is a game for up to eight players on one system — four vs. four — or through local wireless or online play. Beloved characters like Luigi, Princess Peach, Toad, Yoshi and Donkey Kong are all here to tackle the likes of Bowser, Wario and Waluigi on the field.

The game’s online mode also will feature online clubs for players to join and compete against others for bragging rights.

While I’ve haven’t had the opportunity to play this game yet, Nintendo rarely has steered Mario wrong. “Super Smash Bros.,” “Mario Golf Super Rush” and “Mario Kart” have all been great, family friendly games and big money makers for Nintendo. Even the Wii’s “Mario Strikers Charged” earned a 8.3/10 rating from IGN. On Metacritic, it maintains a 79% score with a 8.2 user score.

From Suicide to Salvation

find myself more often than not writing my column based upon a sermon or situation that is freshly on my mind. This time is no different.

The title gives you a hint as to the subject matter.

The things that I normally share are very simplistic. I used to struggle with this, but now I understand the calling God has on my life and how He chooses to use me. My calling is not only through my ministry, it extends outside the four walls of the church to my job with Collin County working in the juvenile justice system.

I have had the opportunity to work with countless youth and their families. There are times that the child turns his or her life around through the system and then there are other times it ends in a way that leads to shattered lives and heartbreak. Suicide is an epidemic with its victims choosing a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I’d like to open this dreaded door and share what could be life-changing or even life saving for someone.

The Bible states in Matthew 6:34 that we are not to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

We all struggle, feeling pulled in different directions, and finding each day to be a battle. The uncertainty of the times we are living in can be overwhelming to say the least. It seems many have a feeling of being lost and searching for their purpose.

This leads to another battle within itself. I struggle in my own life at times and feel the weight of the world bearing down on me. I read my Bible all the time, trying to stay positive and motivated. I know where my help comes from. I truly believe that God can and will fix things in my life, but there are times when I am totally impatient and want it fixed right now!

I trust and believe in God 100% but what about those that may not be so close in their walk with God and feel that life is too much and are ready to give up? The story that I am about to share speaks of three men that were in a dark place, with what looked to be no way out. I hope you will not only peak in the door at this point, but please walk in with me.

In Acts 16:19-36 we find Paul the apostle and his coworker Silas have ended up stripped of their clothes, beaten badly, shackled and cast into prison under special watch, ensuring no escape. By the way,

they ended up here for no fault of their own. They had been out doing good, but not everyone agreed.

Does this sound familiar? Just like Paul and Silas, at times, we find ourselves in the same situation for the same reasons. At this low point, what do you think Paul and Silas did? The Bible tells us that at midnight they were praying and sang praises unto God and the prisoners heard them. It goes on to say that there was a great earthquake that shook the foundations of the prison, the doors were opened, and every man's bands were loosed. Something miraculous happens when you turn your problems over to God, when you pray and praise.

The jailer had been asleep. Asleep? That right there is a problem! At this point he's hopeless, believing all the prisoners have all escaped, and he's about to die anyway, so he decides to take matters into his own hands. He pulls his sword to kill himself!

Now, at this point, Paul has to have some insight from the Holy Spirit to know what the jailer is about to do, because he yells out, "Do yourself no harm" "We are all here!” The jailer has a life-changing moment and falls at their feet asking what he must do to be saved. He then risks his own life by taking Paul and Silas home. He cleans them up, feeds them and by this testimony the jailer’s whole house is saved as Paul and Silas shared the gospel of Jesus Christ with the entire family.

Wow... What a story! Do you see how God is working this whole thing out?

When bad times come, we tend to self-destruct.

How can we stop that pattern? What can you learn from Paul and Silas's example? What's the code?

Number one, obey God's calling on your life and focus on Jesus. By having a close relationship with Christ, you can delight in the darkness. Believe that the Lord will bring you through times of despair and praise him while going through. For that matter praise him always! Use your testimony to change lives. What a testimony they had, locked up for free!

Finally, what can we learn from the jailer? He had a decision to make that night. Remember he was about to make a very permanent decision to a temporary problem. However, instead of choosing to end his life, he went from dead to alive, from a funeral to faith, hopeless to hopeful and finally from suicide to salvation. u

iabetes, though a non-curable disease is one that can easily be sent into remission by practicing healthy dietary habits and by following a good exercise regiment.

Kinds of remissions in Diabetes: Remission can happen in the following ways: • Partial remission: When a person’s blood glucose level remains less than a person with diabetes for a year.

• Complete remission: When a person’s blood glucose level comes to a normal level for a year without medication.

• Prolonged remission: When remission lasts for 5 years.

Diabetes is a condition that impacts blood sugar levels in a human body. There are 2 kinds of Diabetes.

Type1: when a body destroys the cells in the pancreas that produces insulin and Type 2: when the body has a decreased level of sensitivity to insulin. Type 2 is more common than Type 1 diabetes.

How to manage Type 1 Diabetes: It is usually diagnosed during early childhood. It is an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the beta cells of the pancreas and therefore it becomes impossible for the body to make insulin.

Though making Type 1 diabetes go into remission is a daunting task yet many people make use of therapies that stop the body from destroying the pancreatic cells and ultimately allows the body to make its own insulin.

Normally patients with Type 1 diabetes are given insulin injections for this condition. Sometimes Verapamil (a blood pressure) medicine is prescribed for Type 1 diabetes.

Moreover, as technology is advancing, implantable devices that can protect the beta cells in pancreas from being destroyed by the body are being tested on mice and hopefully will soon be used in humans.

How to manage Type 2 Diabetes: Type 2 can be easily put in remission compared to

Type 1 diabetes. It is because Type 2 diabetes is not an autoimmune disease and can be easily influenced by external forces like dietary habits and healthy lifestyle changes. A recent study found that personalized exercise routines, strict diets and glucose-controlling drugs followed for 4 months brought positive results in 40% of the subjects who underwent this trial.

Consequently, subjects were able to attain partial or complete remission by such interventions for their Type 2 diabetes.

Research shows that 30 minutes of brisk walking, swimming or bicycle riding 5 times a week is enough for the body to manage Type 2 diabetes symptoms.

Limiting carbohydrates and substituting a diet rich in high proteins and high fiber instead, regulates blood sugar and helps control Type 2 diabetes. Try to eat fewer calories. Foods like fish, nuts, fruits, low–fat dairy and vegetable oil are also encouraged.

If dietary changes and exercise are not successful, then weight loss can be achieved through bariatric surgery. u

any of you have heard me say I hope I live long enough to see time travel. The science is here.

But it’s taking a while for the refinement.

Anyone who reads science fiction knows that much of what Heinlein, Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke and Herbert, et al, wrote about has evolved. So it isn’t much of a stretch to talk about some of my favorite time travel movies. And let’s leave out the blockbuster multiples like “The Terminator” and “Back to the Future.”

In no particular order, starting with “The Lake House” (2006), a Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves film set two years apart, in which these two, who lived in the house at different times, write letters to each other —

letters that don’t go by regular mail. Each just waits for the flag to go up on their mailbox.

Woody Allen did a charming little film that premiered at Cannes in 2011, one I’m almost sure I saw listed on Netflix. “Midnight in Paris” has Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams as a couple visiting Paris with her insufferable parents, who remind him that his fiancé is pretty insufferable too.

Gil (Wilson) is fascinated by the artistic history of Paris’ “Lost Generation” of the 1920s. Taking a walk by himself at midnight, a 1920 car pulls up beside him and its occupants urge him to get in. He does and finds himself at a party for Jean Cocteau, where he meets Cole Porter, F, Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda.

He takes more walks, discussing writing with Hemingway, art with Dali, and the manuscript of his first novel gets handed to Gertrude Stein.

The car is always there. The film remains a Woody Allen favorite.

“Timeline” (2003) is based on a 1999 Michael Crichton novel by the same name, about an archaeology team working at a site at Castlegard, a 15th century village in Dordogne, France. Their funding is from an American company in New Mexico, a company doing clandestine work on time travel, unknown to them.

When their academic leader doesn’t return from a visit to see if they’ve tampered with their site, several of them visit the corporate offices to see what’s going on and volunteer to go back in time to rescue him. It’s the eve of the final battle in the French/ English 100 Years War. u

Strawberry Meringue Parfaits With Balsamic Syrup Ingredients: • 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar • 3 tablespoons sugar • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice • 1 1/2 pounds strawberries • 1 cup heavy cream Instructions: Combine the vinegar, sugar and lemon in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring to dissolve the sugar. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until reduced by half and syrupy in consistency, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a small heat-proof bowl to cool to room temperature. (Syrup may be prepared up to two days in advance. Cover and refrigerate until use.)

Wash, dry and hull the strawberries. Slice 1/4inch thick. Reserve 6 to 8 slices for garnish and place the remaining berries in a medium bowl. Pour

• 8 ounces mascarpone • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 4 ounces crisp meringues, store-bought or homemade, crumbled • Finely grated lemon zest for garnish the balsamic syrup over the berries and gently stir to coat. Let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes (or cover and refrigerate for up to 4 hours).

Combine the cream, mascarpone, sugar and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Beat at high speed until soft peaks form. (Cream may be prepared up to 4 hours in advance. Cover and refrigerate until use.)

To serve, divide half of the strawberries between serving glasses. Spoon the cream over strawberries to cover. Sprinkle with meringues. Repeat the layering process. Garnish with reserved sliced strawberries and lemon zest. Serve immediately.
