ost people probably don’t realize that the “L&N” in L&N Federal Credit Union stands for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. It’s the railroad that L&N Federal Credit Union was founded to serve in 1954. In 1977, L&N opened a branch in Corbin after the L&N Railroad came to town and later it branched out. “We originally existed just to serve the railroad. Then in the 1980s we expanded so we could add certain companies so that if you were an employee of a certain company then you were eligible to be a member here,” recalled Market President Ron Lewis, who has been with the company for 23 years.

“Then in the early 2000s we branched out to be a community charter so we are a community charter in Louisville and what we call an underserved charter here. Anyone in the five counties of Laurel, Whitley, Pulaski, Rockcastle and Knox are eligible to join. We started with the railroad and now we are open to serve the community. It has been a good journey for us. This area has been very good to us.” One frequent question that Lewis gets is what is the difference between a credit union and a bank? “It’s an important question,” he quickly pointed out noting that L&N’s members are its owners. “If you are a member of the credit union then you are our owner. We don’t answer to a hand-

Spring 2022 — Strictly Business 7 ful of shareholders. If you walk in the door as a member, whether you have $5 or $5 million, then you are an owner of the credit union. That affects everything in how you approach the business.” The board of directors aren’t paid. They are volunteers and members elect them to a threeyear term. “They are not life appointed members on our board of directors. Our members have a say in who those are. When you are structured that way it changes a lot,” Lewis said. “We are a financial cooperative. We are a not for profit organization. The money we make benefits our members in terms of better rates on loans and in deposit accounts.” Lewis said the products Market President Ron Lewis offered by banks and credit unions are largely the same, but credit unions offer an alternative. Company wide, L&N reached the 100,000 member mark last year. “We look forward to continued growth,” he added. L&N’s niche in the market is mortgage loans. “That’s what we do well and will continue to do well. We have had an increased focus on the commercial lending side over the past few years,” Lewis said. “We are big enough where we can handle the $40 million deals if one comes along. We also like to help the everyday lending needs. We are big enough to handle both and like to handle both.” L&N doesn’t sell its mortgages or loans to other companies, which is something that sets it apart from many competitors. “That is huge for us. You won’t have to wake up tomorrow wondering where you have to mail your payment. It is always going to be with us,” added Branch Manager Sandy Moore. L&N built its current facility off Exit 25 and

moved into it in November 2021. It’s prior location was in North Corbin. The building took a little less than one year to build. The two-story structure is what L&N refers to as its “Southeast Operations Center.” The first floor of the facility functions primarily as a branch location for customers. The second floor houses the southeast mortgage operations, some training facilities, conference rooms and so forth. There are about two-dozen people who work at the facility. Currently, the company is building another branch off Exit 29 in north Corbin on the old Shoney’s restaurant site. Officials hope to move into the new full-service branch location in August, which will employ seven full-time workers and some part-time positions too. “We have to have both locations to serve our members,” Lewis added. “This area has been very good to us and has supported us and we want to do the same for them.” “Not only in products and services, but we want to give back to the community. his is a big year for Williamsburg’s own Renfro Supply, as the company is celebrating its centennial anniversary in business. Much has changed in 100 years, but one thing has not, and that is Renfro’s strong ties to the local community. Still, even after all this time, there are still many in Whitley County and surrounding areas who do not fully understand exactly what it is that this local supply company does. General Manager Brad Stephens shed some light on that recently, saying, “We are a convenience wholesale distributor specializing in anything and everything that you might see inside a convenience store. From tobacco products to candy and various types of snack items – just about anything that you might see in a store, we carry it.” Stephens said that Renfro Supply’s current service area is made up of about 350 stores located within a 150-mile radius of their Williamsburg headquarters, but the company does ship items to locations all over the United States, and they are actively growing their

client base. “One of the areas where we are looking to expand is with fundraisers,” Stephens explained. “We carry a lot of things that people don’t realize, such as candles and various novelty items, so we are looking into how we can use that type of merchandise to help local schools and organizations with their annual fundraising efforts.” Other plans for the near future include expanding warehouse and office space, and adding exciting new products to the company’s ever-growing list of offerings. Speaking more about the history of the business, President Burley McFarland said, “Prior to being Renfro Supply, it was the White Grocery Company. We became Renfro in 1922, and over the years it has been everything from a potato co-op to selling baby chickens all over the eastern US back when poultry was really big in this area.” “The company has always been a big part of this community,” McFarland added. “We have employed

multiple generations of families residing in the local area, and we continue to be very important to the community to this day.” When asked about the secret to success that has allowed Renfro Supply to have such an impact during the last 100 years, McFarland said, “I am a firm believer that a company is not just what you do, or what you sell, but it’s the people within the organization. We have a good group of individuals that make up our company, so it doesn’t really matter if we’re selling scotch tape or potatoes, we’re going to be suc-

cessful at what we’re doing because of the people that we employ.” Currently, Renfro Supply employs about 70 people across its retail, wholesale and marketing divisions. This fall, the company will be presenting its annual trade show in Knoxville, Tennessee where vendors and manufacturers will have the chance to come together and help celebrate Renfro’s centennial anniversary. “100 years of exceeding expectations is going to be the theme of the trade show,” McFarland said. “We always want to set expectations with our customers, and then make it a goal to exceed those expectations. I feel that we have been successful in doing that, and we look forward to continuing to provide exceptional service in the years ahead.”

TRI-COUNTY CINEPLEX

he previous two years have been a rollercoaster ride for pretty much all businesses, but some have felt the effects of the now-waning COVID-19 pandemic more than others. Include in that category movie theaters, which were among the establishments that were forced to close their doors for a period of time while COVID-19 cases were at their peak. Corbin’s own Tri-County Cineplex endured these turbulent times, but with daily routines now returning to normal, owners Greg and Suzie Razmus are happy to report that auditoriums are full once again, and plans for expansion are now in motion. “For the last four years we have been working on a rebranding strategy,” Greg Razmus explained. “This will include a remodel of our facilities, and we will Story and photographs by Trevor Sherman

also be expanding our offerings.” This rebranding effort will see the Cineplex transform into a full-on family entertainment center, and will include such attractions as bowling lanes, virtual reality sports, and an arcade. An on-site restaurant is also planned that will offer customers a wide selection of comfort foods to go along with their viewing and/or gaming experience. “Our cinema is evolving, and taking a big step forward into the 21st Century,” said Suzie Razmus, who also commented that she hopes to see these new additions come to fruition sometime before the end of summer 2023. As for how it has felt to see moviegoers coming back through the doors again with regularity in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, both Greg and Suzie said that it has been a long-awaited relief. heltowee Trace will be beginning its 39th year of operations this season, and President Dania Egedi is excited about what the spring and summer has in store for visitors to the resort. “Rick ‘Smurff’ Egedi founded the company in 1983,” Dania Egedi said when asked about the history of Sheltowee Trace. “At that time, we were running rafting trips on the Big South Fork, and canoe trips on the Upper Cumberland. We started adding more options once we moved to the Whitley County side of the river.” “The biggest change since then is that we have greatly expanded our camping and cabin rental op-

tions, including our popular covered wagons. Today, Sheltowee Trace Adventure Resort offers rafting on two different rivers, numerous canoe, kayak, and SUP (Stand Up Paddle Board) trips, riverboat tours, ziplining, RV and tent camping, rustic and resort cabins, as well as a number of other adventure activities.” When asked why so many visitors continue to return each year, Egedi said, “Our staff is wonderful. We often get reviews that mention how friendly and helpful everyone is, and how clean our facilities are. We try to function as a tourist information resource for the area, sending our customers into the surrounding towns for food, lodging, and other activi-

ties.” “We are also very family oriented,” Egedi added. “With multiple types of activities for different ages and comfort levels. People trust that they and their family will feel included and have a good experience here. We are now getting people that used to come here as children, bringing their own children to do trips with us. I can’t think of a better compliment than that.” As for what is in store for the 2022 season, Egedi said, “We just opened up two new couples cabins, and we are removing our last two camp inns in order to put in two more super cozy cabins. We are also working on plans for a new Aframe rustic cabin.” “We put in new ramps on our zipline tower so that we can take people up to 275 lbs. on our zipline, and we have a completely new set of bikes for our e-bike rentals. There are also plans to start changing up the food offerings on our whitewater rafting trip, and we will be offering lunch cruises on the Cumberland Star once again.” “Our biggest change for the upcoming season, though, is internal. With the passing of our founder, we are changing how the company operates internally. CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT O’NEIL-LAWSON FUNERAL HOME

’Neil-Lawson Funeral Home in downtown Corbin has been faithfully serving the tri-county community since 1928. Owner Mark Lawson and his staff pride themselves on being there to help local families navigate some of the most difficult situations that they will ever face, and that was especially true during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-2021. “At one point we were only allowed to have ten people inside for a service,” Lawson recalled. “That was rough, seeing people forced to choose who got to come to a service, and who didn’t. I didn’t like that, but now capacity is back to where it

used to be.” Lawson said that many visitors to the funeral home are still cautious, choosing to wear masks or practice social distancing, but he is happy to report that things are mostly back to normal at this point. As for what it was like during the days of strict COVID mandates, Lawson said, “Most people understood the situation, but some folks did get very aggravated with it, and with us. We had some that came back later and apologized, but overall, I feel like we had a pretty good handle on it.” Lawson said that he hopes the hard times of the pandemic have shown people that they can’t take life for granted.

“We still love the movie industry,” they said. “The customers and the employees are all excited to be back. It’s hard to describe the joy of having a packed theater on a Friday night, with everyone smiling and the popcorn popping. It’s just magical.” Suzie credits her staff, including longtime manager Cassie Powers, for their dedication during recent difficult times. “She loves this business like we do,” Razmus said of Powers. “And just like us, she doesn’t want to be anywhere else.” Both Greg and Suzie also wanted to thank their loyal customers for returning to the theater after shutdowns, and continuing to show up during times
