Well, it seems travel has opened back up. We used to love to travel, and have done two trips in the past month. Plane delays, flight cancellations, hours in customs and TSA lines, it is just not as fun as it used to be.

• Things look so nice with all the lawns, trees, flowers and bushes. Except, of course, for those trash and recycle bins. Please keep them properly stowed away.

• Looking to put up a fence to keep the deer out or the dogs in? That’s fine, but remember that all new fences require approval from both Association of Property Owners of Riverhill and the city. It’s not hard; you can find the information right on our website.

Keep your private information away from hackers and phishers

By Niel Powers When I asked a fellow “tech nerd” his thoughts on how to easily protect a computer from scams and malware, his answer was, “Easy. Turn it off.” I can’t argue with that. The only 100% sure-fire way of avoiding hacking and malware breaches is to disconnect from the internet.

But let’s assume that won’t work for you. What are some simple ways to protect you and your devices?

First, consider how many computers you have. Here’s a hint: It isn’t just that laptop. It’s the iPad, your smartphone, your smart TV, that Alexa you got as a present and maybe even your doorbell.

And next year, we’ll add half a dozen new devices to this list. So, the very first step is to ensure that your home Wi-Fi network is secured with a good, long password you keep to yourself.

Many of the newer combo modem/ routers come with a password, but it is rarely long enough. You can change it.

Make it a phrase, not just a few letters and numbers. Hackers use software to crack passwords, and an eight-character password can be cracked in minutes to a few hours. Eighteen-character passwords takes months to many years to crack using the same software, longer if you mix in special characters.

Secondly, think about where you use your many computers. You can find public networks in most restaurants,

coffee shops, grocery stores and many other places. But note the word “public.” Anyone who walks in can get the password just by asking, and those passwords are rarely changed.

Do you remember those old “party line” phones where anyone on the same network could pick up their phone and listen in on other people’s private conversations? Public networks are the modern digital equivalent. Sure, you can browse the internet or check your social media, but never use them with any sensitive or personal information.

Just wait until you are back home on a properly secured network.

Now, let’s talk about what comes in to your computer. Phishing isn’t done with a pole and a hook, but it is done with bait. A cute picture or a tempting link is the bait, and your email inbox is the line they cast. Never, ever click on a link or a picture unless you are 100% sure of where it came from. There’s a current scam where you get an email from someone’s stolen email account with a subject line like, “don’t we know this person?” and a link to click. Don’t even think about it. If you get something that smells phishy from a friend or a company, pick up the phone and call or go to the company’s website (not from the link in the email).

It’s a twist on Reagan’s old saying: Don’t trust. Verify.

While we’re on the subject, keep in mind that the IRS and pretty much all government agencies will never send you an email asking for your personal information. Microsoft, Apple and other technology companies do not send you email or call to tell you to give them control of your computer. It’s all a fake.

All of it.

Now, let’s talk about somebody else’s computer. Increasingly, retail and subscription companies want to make things more “convenient” for you to store your credit card number with them. Keep in mind that if their systems are hacked, it is your information that is at risk.

With some subscription systems there’s not much choice, but if there is, don’t let them store your credit card. It’s not worth the risk. If you really must, try to use a separate card designated only for online subscriptions and watch it like a hawk. Never use a debit card online for anything.

There’s more, of course. Much more.

Using a Virtual Private Network, or VPN, for example, or router encryption and detection on your home Wi-Fi. Various protection programs for your computer, your phone and other devices. More secure and private browsers to use. But most people who get hacked fall for one of the simple schemes above. So, start with the basics and just follow a few simple rules.

Franck Mannechetz General manager, Riverhill Country Club

A small desk sign is tucked away on the corner of Franck Mannechetz’s desk at the Riverhill Country Club.

It reads, “Fixer of Everything,” and foretells a lot about the soft-spoken man we interviewed on a warm spring day in April. Franck, who began his job as general manager of Riverhill Country Club in February, has already become entrenched with the facility, its staff and many of its customers, and he’s already plunged in with some exciting plans for improvement.

F

ranck took an interest in culinary arts at a young age. He remembers being about 5 and watching his dad cook. Fascinated, he decided he one day wanted to be a chef. That desire never diminished, and he mapped his academic path to fulfill his childhood vision. He received his Bachelor degree in Restaurant and Food Services Management at the prestigious Lycee Professional Golf Hotel Economique et Hotelier in Hyeres, France, in 1986 and his Master degree in Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Management at the Ecole Hoteliere de Nice in Nice, France, in 1999. He catapulted those accreditations into a career that has taken him to many parts of the globe and well-prepared him for his current position at Riverhill.

“Canada was really my first big job, and I worked at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa doing summer training. One of my duties was being in charge of meals for 600 employees,” he said.

He then headed to Mexico, where his can-do attitude and expertise brought quick recognition. In 1991, on his first night as sommelier at Fouquet’s de Paris in Mexico, he sold a record 45 bottles of wine and caught the eye of management, who soon promoted him to restaurant manager.

During his next stint as restaurant manager at the elite Maxim’s de Paris in Mexico, he creatively partnered with outside contractors and reduced expenses by 15%. Those qualities as an effective manager were reasons why the restaurant’s owners lured him to San Antonio in 1998 to open Gaucho’s. He oversaw its construction, development and eventual opening in 2000. Franck and his new wife, Maria, immediately fell in love with Texas and the San Antonio area and decided to stay. By 2001, he was catering director and food and beverage cirector for The Dominion Country Club, and by 2015, he was its assistant general manager and operations manager, a position he retained until he accepted the position at Riverhill Country Club.

The Kerrville move Franck is enthused about his new position and the community of Kerrville in general.

“There are a lot of friendly people, and everybody is so nice.

The pace of work in Kerrville is not as stressful as in a bigger city. The club is in a great neighborhood,” Franck said.

He’s been welcomed with open arms.

“The welcoming from our members has been phenomenal. I enjoy conversations about our plans for the club and its bright future, and it is always enjoyable to talk about food and wine with our members because it is my passion — and who doesn’t like good food or drinks?” he said.

Franck the boss Franck uses a hands-on approach to management. His time is currently focused on his culinary staff of 20.

“I don’t include the golf and maintenance areas, since we have a great team already in place,” he said.

Setting examples is also important.

“I think the best way to train and motivate people is to work with them on the floor,” Franck said.

“First, to make sure everything is done correctly, and secondly, to show them that if I can do it, they can do it. I like attention to detail, and I always keep a positive attitude, even when things are tough. I show my staff that nothing

is impossible with the right mindset.”

Motivation comes with touches of kindness.

“I often reward staff with a gift for their birthday or do something in appreciation for their good work,” he said, such as extra days off or a “just because” gift.

Franck’s vision One goal for the club is to have more families join, especially people living outside the neighborhood.

“If you look at our website, www.riverhillcc.com, you’ll see we have different membership levels geared toward individual needs and price levels, even plans for non-golfers. With all the exciting plans we have in development stages for the club, this will be a great time to join,” Franck said. “We already have members coming from San Antonio and out of state.

We know people come here via word of mouth, but we’ll probably increase our advertising so local people will see what we’re doing and want to join.

We are planning kids’ events, a movie night series on the lawn, bingo nights, fitness activities, country dance, steak and stogies and more. It is going to be a great year.”

The historical significance of the mansion intrigues Franck, and he is enthused at opportunities to improve the structure as well as restaurant.

“We hope to remodel, upgrade but preserve the beautiful historical touches. We’ll be bringing in a new, fresh look — more upscale, a fusion of history and modern,” Franck said. “I think our biggest goal is to remodel the dining room, flooring, tables and chairs in the mansion and increase the open hours to six days a week for lunch and dinner instead of the current Wednesday and Friday nights only. Our Turning Point casual dining spot will remain open all week.

We’ve redone menus in both restaurants (see menus posted online), improved our presentations, and tweaked existing recipes to bolster flavor.

“We are so fortunate to have Chef Chase. He is always eager to grow and improve what we do. We share a passion to present beautiful meals to our guests prepared with the freshest ingredients we can find.

Sustainability is important to us. We even had a farm-totable dinner on April 22 to celebrate Earth Day,” Franck said.

On the personal side Franck and Maria have been married 22 years and currently live in Helotes. Maria is a hairstylist and loves to landscape in her free time. The couple enjoys golfing together, traveling and dining at nice restaurants.

“We try to get to the coast each summer and also hit Vegas for a few days — not to gamble but for the shows and culinary experience,” Franck said.

The scarcity of his free time doesn’t allow for tennis and the fitness activities he did as a young man, but he does try to golf at least once a week and appreciates the quality of Riverhill.

“I want Riverhill to be the premier club out of San Antonio and appear in every top category for a golf course,” he said.

One thing is for sure, when Franck sets his mind to it, it happens.

Great start Franck’s engaging smile, delightful accent and enthusiastic attitude suit him well for this new position.

“Members comment that it is nice to see me out; I’m always visible. That’s just who I am and always have been. I walk through the dining room at least five times a day and stop to engage with our members,” he said. “I tell my staff, ‘We never have complaints, just feedback. We don’t do service; we do hospitality.’”

How does your

Garden

grow?

By Niel Powers It’s been pretty tough weather-wise in Riverhill. Two Februarys in a row with hard freeze weeks, lots of wind, and (as of this writing) severe drought. In other words, everything is as usual in South Texas! With all that in mind, I asked people what they were planting, despite weather extremes, a lack of rain and a surprising number of very hungry deer.

Their responses can be found on the following pages, but as someone who has neither the skill nor the inclination to dig in the dirt, my favorite was Frank Dunlap’s suggestion of rocks. They require very little water, grow very slowly and rarely require pruning or mowing. And Frank should know — he is a Master Gardener. Enjoy!

lost a few salvias and a couple of lantanas through the freeze. I’m planting a mixture of pink, red, white and lipstick salvias and mostly dwarf lantanas in different colors. Both are drought resistant, and the deer have to be pretty hungry to nibble on the lantana. I’ve also transplanted some mealy blue sage. Drought tolerant and the deer hate them.”

am going to talk about what I plant in the front yard, as it is fair game.

Inside my circle drive, where I don’t have a watering system, I plant Mexican feather grass and bicolor iris. In the beds against the house are gold spot lantana, bicolor iris, Dallas red lantana, zebra plant, verbena, yaupon and medium-height crepe myrtle.

All of these are drought tolerant plants. The backyard has a fence around it, so I plant lots of annuals like pentas and vincas.

e use a couple of wash tubs that we converted to planters. When the kids were young, we gardened about a half-acre of food. But they are gone now, and it is way more work than we like. We plant tomatoes and peppers. This keeps our hand in, and we are able to make two to three 15-jar batches of salsa per.”

essert grasses come in numerous shapes and colors. Great fillers and beautiful until freezes.

Bougainvilleas do well. They are thorny, so hard for deer to eat. Purple sage. Grow as big as you want or trim to stay small. Little water required. Liriope for borders. They don’t seem to care for them.”

Still thinking what else, knowing there is much root digging to do before anything else gets planted.”

“I

decided a few years ago, after the loss of some well-established plants, to only plant things that will grow well down to growing Zone 6. I think we’re technically Zone 8 or maybe 7b, if such a thing exists, but I’m tired of my stuff freezing because of two days of cold weather!

“Plants I’m particularly pleased with: “Rose of Sharon — The flowers on these come in many colors and look like hibiscus, but they’re quite hardy. I have a variety called White Pillar. It survived the big freeze of 2021 without even being covered. After that, I bought one called Magenta Chiffon, and both of these did well without being covered all winter. Although I have these in my front courtyard, they’re supposed to be highly deer resistant. Very little maintenance. I can’t recommend this highly enough! They will grow huge or they can be pruned to keep them smaller.

“Annual vinca — These are annuals here but very inexpensive at all local nurseries. There are many bloom colors to choose from. I’ve planted this in the raised bed that lines our courtyard. It’s right out in the driveway, and the deer don’t touch it. They bloom profusely from early spring until the first freeze.

“Turk’s cap — A fabulous native plant that comes back year after year with small red flowers that all pollinators love. They do have to be chopped down to the ground in winter.

“Clematis — Anywhere you might want to plant a vine, this will be wonderful. If it doesn’t have a trellis to climb, it will form a bush. Some varieties are more deer resistant than others.

“Elephant ears — In shady spots. Mine came back after the big freeze, even though they’re in pots and were uncovered. The deer don’t touch them.

“Canna lilies — Ditto on the plants coming back after freezing, even though mine are in pots. The deer might nibble them when they’re young, but they won’t munch them to the ground.

“For people with more time to devote: “Dwarf dahlia — particularly a variety with the brand name Hypnotica. Comes in many bloom colors. Dahlia are deer resistant, but the snails kept away. I leave the bulbs in their pots during the winter, but I did move the pots into the garage for a few days during a hard freeze.

These will bloom profusely from early summer to the first freeze. I bought two at Wildseed Farms and one at Plant Haus. I have also seen them at Lowe’s.

“Wisteria — A dwarf variety called Amethyst Falls. It can take the cold of winter and the heat of summer and the deer don’t touch mine.

It does need to be pruned properly though.”

Milton “Buddy” & Patricia Gabriel ~ Married 63 years ~

Buddy and I went to Gregory High School together. We never dated in high school but were friends, both being on the school newspaper staff and very active in sports. Gregory is near Corpus Christi. We graduated from Gregory High School and married other people.

Buddy’s first wife died in 2012, and my late husband died in 2016. Our high school reunion coordinator sent out an email to all the alumni saying that my husband had died. When Buddy got the coordinator’s email, he promptly emailed me, saying how sorry he was that my husband had died, that his wife had also died, and if time permitted, he would like to see me.

I thought it was too soon to respond to Buddy, as my late husband had only been dead a short time.

Later that day I attended grief counseling at my church. The moderator made this statement: “Your loved one died, but you didn’t. You have got to keep living.” I took that literally, went right home and emailed Buddy back, saying I would like to stay in touch with him.

I lived in Houston. He began to call me every evening at 9 p.m. We attended a high school reunion together, the first time we had seen each other in many years, and lightning struck. We fell wildly in love. We decided to marry, which we did at our church in Jasper, Georgia. We honeymooned on a cruise to Alaska.

For a year, we went back and forth between our two homes, then decided to start fresh together in a new place. We both loved Kerrville. Buddy’s parents had

owned a ranch in Utopia, and I had come to Mt. Wesley many times as a member of Methodist Youth Fellowship when I was in junior high and high school. My aunt and uncle lived in Kerrville, and my family often visited them.

In 2018, we found a home for sale in Riverhill, which we bought and are very happily living in. (We have) marvelous neighbors and all the delights we had expected of living in Kerrville.
