Area pilots recently gathered at Smith Mountain Airport for a baby shower for proud parents of a soon-to-be-born son. Parker and Mikayla Middleton were welcomed to a hangar decorated with aviation themed items in blue as guests were treated to bountiful food offerings. The honorees opened dozens of suitable baby items including this baby blanket festooned with aircraft images. Parker is a commercial pilot as is his father while Parker’s grandfather is likewise a pilot. Thus, it must be destined that the upcoming member of the family will likewise become a pilot.

“It was discouraging when I got back home. I felt lost; I felt very lost,” Osborne said.

He also said that he didn’t think there was going to be anything special happen in his life, adding that he figured he was going to work the rest of his life until he died.

Dreama, who is Mark Osborne’s mother, said in the video that her son didn’t need to give up on music, because he was talented at it. She asked him to try out for American Idol, and he agreed to it.

“If I get a golden ticket, it would show me that I guess I was wrong in giving it up,” Osborne said. “It would be one of the best birthday presents I could give to my mom.”

With his guitar in hand, Osborne is then seen playing and singing “Stone” by Whiskey Myers in front of Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.

“You guys know this is nerve-wrecking, right,” Osborne told the judges as they responded with laughs.

All three judges gave Osborne their vote of approval.

“I like your attitude and that incredible mustache. So yes,” Lionel Richie said.

“I think you’d be an authentic addition to Hollywood. It’s a yes for me as well,” Katy Perry said.

“Brothers Osborne has some competition in the Osborne category. Your momma was right,” Bryan said.

All three then told Osborne, “You’re going to Hollywood!”

In a follow-up video from American Idol, Osborne said he was going to place the golden ticket on his forklift for a day before “Hollywood Week” and then frame it for his mother’s birthday.

“Hollywood Week” for the 20th season of American Idol kicked off March 28, but Osborne was eliminated in the episode.•

HUDDLESTON GETS OUTDOOR RECREATION CENTER Story by C.E. Adams Photos contributed

An outdoor recreation center is in the works for the Huddleston area, which was expected to open in May. Called the Huddleston Veterans Memorial Courts, it includes a basketball court, street/roller hockey rink, and pickleball courts located at 3348 Trading Post Road in Huddleston.

“Many men and women have given much of themselves in the service of our nation,” the mission statement of the project states. “This facility is being built to honor the service of our veterans, and to provide a first class recreational facility for the Huddleston community. This facility recognizes the selflessness and courage of veterans, while at the same time doing a part in preparing the youth of today for the challenges of tomorrow through sport and healthy competition.”

Mitchell’s Point Marina owner Jeff Prowse is leading the project, investing $60,000 from his business. He’s also received support from area businesses and is taking donations from the public. To help fund the project, anyone can buy inscribed bricks to memorialize a veteran, an aspect of the center that is important for Prowse, who is a veteran himself. The bricks will be in what is called the Huddleston Memorial Courts Circle of Honor.

“Everybody has been very magnanimous, having either donated time or materials or whatever,” Prowse said. “And the vision is essentially that it’s a memorial course … but it’s just basically a place for kids to get out. And, you know, learn teamwork, learn self control, and all those things.”

The idea for the outdoor recreation center came out of a community need. With there being 83 campsites in the area, he said campers set up a small area a few years ago for the children to play basketball; however, it was near a busy road.

After a piece of land was purchased near the marina on Craddock Creek — mainly to have access to another well — there was a lot of space available, so the idea of putting in a basketball court came up. Since there is a need for outdoor activity space in the area, the project evolved into including a roller hockey rink and pickleball courts, and opening it to the whole community.

The hockey board is made possible with assistance from Liberty University, where both and he and his wife coach.

Although Prowse has never played pickleball, friends of his urged him to include the courts. After the first phase of the project is completed — which was expected in May — Prowse said what comes next would be community driven.

Should there be tennis courts and another basketball court? It depends on what the community wants, he said.

Eventually, Prowse plans to have more surveillance with keyless access. Anybody can use the recreation center but would need to sign a release form. This would ensure a “nice, safe, secure place for kids to play,” Prowse said.

“Who knows what comes after that, but I want to concentrate on getting kids down there and getting them playing,” Prowse said. “And then we’re going to worry about landscaping and additions to the place first, but my big thing is basketball and roller hockey — getting that up and going really quickly — and then we can we can always add more stuff later.”

The project is completely funded by the community with no government involvement.

Prowse said he has “the patience of a gnat” so he didn’t want to go through the process of seeking assistance from the county government or from grants. However, once the recreation is established, if local or state government wants to help with its future growth or sustainability, he’s open ISSUE 4

to that.

Prowse also is considering a sports camp with summer leagues for both children and adults for basketball and roller hockey, but these are ideas for years in the future.

“We at Mitchell’s Point Marina see this as an investment in the future of our nation,” the project’s mission statement states. “When our kids participate in team sports, they learn the values of dedication, cooperation, self control and a myriad of other positive lessons.”

Prowse envisions it being open 24/7 starting sometime in May, but obtaining commercial basketball goals has been hard to get. Other milestones are site manicuring and outdoor lighting.

Initial requirements for the project are expected to cost under $100,000, but it can expand depending on community donations.

“It’s going to be a huge asset for the community, and of course down here, it’s going to raise people’s property values because there’s going to be near a nice park and all that kind of stuff,” Prowse said. “But I mean, the sky’s the limit.”

LOCAL AUTHOR TALKS ABOUT NEW BOOK ON CHRIST

Smith Mountain Lake resident Megan Saben, a book-reviewer and writer, has been writing manuscripts for about 30 years but never found a publisher to pick up any of her writings. However, there was one manuscript she wrote that she wanted readers to enjoy and decided to take a leap of faith and publish it herself.

That manuscript was “Something Better Coming,” which is a picture book that features the resurrection of Jesus Christ and having hope for the future. It has quickly become popular in the area as Easter approached.

The idea for the book came nine years ago, according to Saben, and it started from an assignment to review Easter books for RedeemedReader.com she writes reviews for. She found books that demonstrated the Easter Bunny and spring, and she also found books that only talked about the week of Christ featuring his death and resurrection.

“I thought to myself that there is so much more to the story than this. Christ proved his power over death earlier during his ministry,” she said.

Saben decided to write the story of Christ with a poetry writing style and mentioned that she originally titled it “Resurrection” but felt that didn’t catch a reader’s attention and ultimately came up with the title “Something Better Coming.” She said the title helps capture the message about how Christ rising from the dead guarantees the future hope of all those who put their trust in him that something better was coming.

After each event in the book, it ends with “You think that’s great?

Well just you wait, there is something better coming.”

“It builds the reader’s anticipation and it escalates into Christ glorification at the end,” Saben said.

The artwork was illustrated by Ryan Flanders of Callaway. Saben said it took him about five to six months to create the illustrations and added that each one of them really shows how powerful the emotions are. It was his first time illustrating a book, according to Saben.

“He did a magnificent job,” she said.

Through a Kickstarter campaign, Saben was able to print 2,000 copies, with over 800 having already gone out within six months. It is not available on websites such as Amazon but can be found in local stores and her website: somethingbettercoming.com.

Saben said she went into Gifts Ahoy at Bridgewater Plaza to see if they would be interested in selling her book. When Saben went to her vehicle to get three books to put on the shelf, she was greeted with a customer who was overhearing their prior conversation. Saben said the customer wanted to take a look at it, and when she did, she requested 10 books.

“It was God’s providence that she was in the store with me and overheard out conversation. The Lord knew she needed it. She even came out on the store’s front porch with me and prayed for God’s blessing on this book,” Saben said.

Not only has the book been selling locally, but Saben said she has been getting orders across the United States from her website.

She added that there have been some orders that have requested 20 books. She said she doesn’t advertise it, but it has gotten around through word of mouth and online reviews.

“It’s very humbling, because it’s not in my hands; it’s the Lord’s doing,” Saben said. •

home,” said her sister Cali Levine. “Then, when we were given the opportunity to both go on full scholarship there, I knew it was a God wink. The coaching staff and players (have) intensity and energy, yet their love and compassion for the game made it perfect.”

Both Levine sisters mentioned that they have done everything together their whole lives and playing together at the collegiate level was an opportunity they couldn’t pass up. They also said the recruiting process of visiting multiple colleges and getting an inside look at their basketball programs made the decision a difficult one, but in the end, they felt that USC Upstate is where they belong.

“I was recruited by great coaches and basketball programs,” said Jeni Levine. “It definitely wasn’t an easy decision and took some time, but I believe deep down in my heart, I knew it would be Upstate that I found a home at for the next four years.”

“It was definitely a hard decision; all of the schools that recruited us showed nothing but love and were all outstanding programs,” said Cali Levine. “But, in the end I knew my heart was at Upstate, so that made the decision easier.”

Jeni Levine, who broke the girls basketball career point milestone with 1,252 points and scored 639 points her senior year, said she feels she can make an immediate impact with her strengths and leadership, adding she can adapt to any role her coaches assign her. The first-team all-district, all-region, and allstate selection said she is going to bring maximum effort and energy to help her team be successful.

Cali Levine, who was first-team for both the Blue Ridge District and Region 3D and was named honorable mention for all-state, said she is very excited to find her piece to the puzzle of her team’s success. She said her ability to knock down shots and play hard defense is something she can bring to the table her freshman year.

When they reflected on their decision, the Levine twins said they are blessed to be able to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level. Both are ready to make the most of their opportunity.

“I am very excited not only to be by Cali’s side on the court for four more years but to also go through this new journey with her,” said Jeni Levine. “I believe that we push each other to be our best selves in whatever we may be doing and will be able to transfer this mindset to help achieve our goals and surpass our dreams at Upstate.”

“It’s honestly the biggest blessing to be playing basketball at the next level,” said Cali Levine. “To play Division 1 basketball has been a dream of mine for countless years. It’s a little surreal to start to see all the hard work pay off, but it’s just getting started.

None of this would have been possible without my family, coaches and teammates; I owe so much to them. So, I’m just ready to continue working hard athletically and academically and to be given the opportunity to go to school for free.”•

After leading Staunton River High School to a historic 25-0 record until the Region 3D Championship and a trip to the VHSL state tournament, senior twin stars Jeni and Cali Levine both will continue their basketball careers on the division one college level at the University of South Caroline Upstate.

“I chose to continue my athletic and academic career at USC Upstate for a variety of reasons. The moment I first stepped onto campus, I loved it. The energy and passion of the coaching staff just radiated into an amazing atmosphere on and off the court,” said Jeni Levine.

Glenn Youngkin visited Liberty University on March 25, where as the keynote speaker at Convocation, he delivered a message recounting the role of faith and prayer in his recent campaign and in his work as governor.

While he also addressed some pressing political concerns, much of his address carried the tone of a sermon, a point emphasized by the Rev. Jonathan Falwell, senior pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church, who provided a few remarks and a closing prayer following the governor’s message.

“I love that we have a governor who gave us a sermon,” Falwell stated.

The governor spoke of his calling by God to run for governor, which came not at the urging of friends and acquaintances, but out of his personal prayer life and independently out of his wife Suzanne’s personal prayer life. He explained that it was not an assurance that he would win, noting that even if he had lost, he would have been following God, because God would have had something to teach him out of the experience.

He quoted Abraham Lincoln: “My concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”

Another quote Youngkin shared was Psalm 121:1-2, “I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.”

He encouraged the students, “Sometimes things don’t go our way, and we ask why; we have to remember that it’s his will, not mine, his timing, not mine. The God who created the universe loves you and knows the number of hairs on your head.”

He exhorted them to seek God’s guidance in the challenges of life.

Concerning political issues that deeply divide society, he pointed out that for the past several years in the commonwealth the divisive leadership pushed an either/or agenda while pitting different segments of society against each other unnecessarily. Many of these matters should be addressed with a both/and approach, he commented.

and the bad, all of it,” he affirmed to applause. “And we can remove divisive concepts from the classroom, where students are taught that they are inherently racist because of their race or religion or sex, or that they bear the sins of the past.”

He similarly addressed the complex issues of race relations and racism, as well as law enforcement and academic freedom, again promoting a both/and mentality rather than the divisiveness that has been pushed to the forefront in recent years.

Returning again to his words of encouragement to the students of the Christian university, he urged, “We can hold fast to our values,” adding that God has placed us where we are “for such a time as this,” alluding to words from the Book 20

Specific to the Liberty community, he declared that he is proud to work with five Liberty alumni in the General Assembly, six more LU grads serving in his administration, and “a multitude of Liberty Flames that work across all of government.”

Youngkin stated, “The reputation and impact of Liberty University extends far beyond the Blue Ridge Mountains. As you celebrate your 50th anniversary, 50th – happy anniversary – you must remember that you are the greatest ambassadors for Liberty University.”

He observed that Liberty students perform 500,000 hours of service in the community and around the world each year.

The school wins national championships in debate. Their quarterback (Malik Willis, who received the Bobby Bowden award in convocation last Wednesday) is in the national spotlight as the top quarterback prospect in the NFL draft, and Lady Flame Jill Bolton was selected as the National Player of the Year in field hockey.

“The students and graduates of Liberty University are indeed a force for good,” he emphasized. “Discern if you have a calling for public service. Christians need to serve on the front lines, whether it’s in a remote village on the other side of the globe or in our back yard.

“Let me be clear. Someone’s values will be legislated. The only question is whose values will they be? Will it be those of people who understand the uniqueness of America? Will it be those that understand the gift given by our founders of

this great country? Yes, they were imperfect, but we strive to make it a perfect union.

“Will it be the values of people who revere our creator and understand what it means to have your life changed by the grace of Jesus Christ? Whose values will it be?”

He challenged them, “No doubt, many of you – all of you – are called to serve. The only question is where and when and how?”

He admonished them to “go boldly” into the world and make an impact.

On that note, he prayed over the students, thanking God for Liberty and for his spirit’s presence. He asked for God’s peace on a war-torn world, on the nation, the commonwealth and the university.

“I pray especially for the students here today. Ignite your will in their hearts. Light their paths. Calm their worries so that they can hear your voice. Watch over them, for you know the path you have cleared for them. Watch over them and help them be on your side.”

Following Youngkin’s message, Robert Hurt, dean of the Helms School of Government and former congressman representing Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, joined him for a brief Q-and-A session.

The governor’s visit coincided with the Helms School of Government’s public policy conference, entitled “A Nation Divided? Assessing Freedom & the Rule of Law in a Post 2020 World.” Speaker of the House of Delegates Todd Gilbert, state Senator Steve Newman, and former governors George Allen and Bob McDonald were among the speakers for the conference.

Falwell closed the convocation by praying over Gov. Youngkin, beseeching God’s leading, protection and wisdom on him as he leads the commonwealth. •

8-YEAR-OLD COMPETES AT KTM JUNIOR RACING SUPERCROSS Story by William Seidel Photos contributed

Shown is 8-year-old Tate Bauer of Moneta competing in front of 25,000 to 30,000 people at the KTM Junior Racing Supercross at Ford Field Stadium. This event gives motocross riders who are 7 and 8 years old the experience of being treated like a factory rider.

Eight-year-old Tate Bauer of Moneta has been competing in motocross for about four years and has rode in front a couple of thousand people before.

However, Bauer got the experience of a lifetime by riding in front of 25,000 to 30,000 people at Ford Field Stadium, home of the Detroit Lions, at the KTM Junior Racing Supercross in March.

This event gives motocross riders who are 7 and 8 years old the experience of being treated like a factory rider.

The participants that get picked are randomly selected. Tate Bauer’s dad, David Bauer, said that he and his wife Brittany Bauer L AKE LIFE MAGAZINE

have tried two years to get their son into this major event to no avail until now.

“We were actually starting to lose hope because it’s a random draw, and people from all over the world can come,” David Bauer said.

One night, as they were getting ready to go to bed, David Bauer asked his wife if she had checked Tate’s status regarding the KTM Junior Racing Supercross. When she checked her email, both David and Brittany got the notification that their son had been selected.

“I was stoked. Knowing that he gets to be on the track with 22

“I was kind of shy, but at the same time I was very happy I got to meet them. I was stoked to meet all of them,” Tate Bauer said.

After they did their walkthrough, held their first 10-minute practice session and signed autographs for those in their respective pits, Tate Bauer and the other junior riders went through one final 10-minute practice session that evening before the actual race.

The junior riders also were treated with an actual opening ceremony, which saw each one of them get their moment on the jumbotron telling the crowd their name and from where they traveled. David Bauer said there were kids from all across the country and one that even flew in from Germany.

Once the ceremonies were over, the junior riders lined up on their bikes in preparation of the race starting. From there, the gates fell to the floor, and the junior riders were now officially racing at the KTM Junior Racing Supercross.

“It was super fun, but I was a little nervous. I was surprised to be racing in front of that many people in the stadium,” Tate Bauer said.

Once the race was over, Tate Bauer finished in fifth and seven seconds faster than his second practice run.

He added, “I wanted to do good, that was my mindset when the race was about to start. I think I did pretty good. I was pleased.”

David Bauer said watching his son race on a stage that big was a “mind-blowing experience” saying he’s been to stadiums like Ford Field, and it can be very intimidating performing in front of a crowd of that scale. He said he was impressed with the composure of all the junior racers taking part, including his son.

“Those kids have to have a lot of heart and passion for motocross to be able to go out there in front of a large crowd and not get frozen with fear of messing up,” David Bauer said.

Tate Bauer said he still finds himself thinking about his once-ina-lifetime experience. He also was able to share his experience with his classmates when he returned to school. Before the race, a GoPro was put on the front bender of his bike, which captured a video of the whole race. That same video can be seen on Tate Bauer’s Instagram page: tate_mxracer428.

To remember his experience in Detroit on the dirt track, David Bauer said they are planning to build a case that Tate’s gear will be put in for display. There also will be one other memorabilia that will go along with it.

A fundraiser that is set up through the Ryan Dungey Foundation helps raise money to buy bikes to give to schools and for charities such as St. Jude. Ryan Dungey, a former KTM rider and founder of Ryan Dungey Foundation, works closely with St. Jude due to his grandmother passing away to cancer in 2005. According to its website, Dungey and St. Jude partnered up in 2012 to create a benefit cycling event known as the MN Major River-to-River Ride.

It later evolved into the St. Jude Ride and 5K Run. A week before the Bauer’s went to Michigan, Dungey announced that if anyone raises $500 or more, he will send them a signed Ryan Dungey front number plate. Tate raised almost $560, with a lot of donations coming from people within the community. They will put that number plate it in the case with the gear.

“Tate’s super excited to get that,” David Bauer said. •

When they told their son, his reaction was what anyone would expect.

“Oh, I was super excited,” Tate Bauer said.

When they made the trip to Detroit, The Bauer’s got to take a sneak peek at the track and saw the professional’s take some laps around the track for press day. Knowing he was going to get his turn on that track made Tate Bauer even more anxious.

Before his race day, Tate Bauer was fitted for his whole gear — helmet, neck brace, etc., which was officially made by Troy Lee and was free of charge. As one can imagine, the gear was top quality.

“It was probably around $1,200 worth of gear they gave to the junior racers,” David Bauer said.

The next day, Tate Bauer, along with the other riders, experienced the dirt track up close before the race, as he got to walk it with his father David and the factory riders for about 15 to 20 minutes.

Princess Cut 3 FILM FEATURES SML Story by William Seidel

Watchman Pictures’ “Princess Cut 3: Beauty from Ashes” will be coming to the Pure Flix streaming service in June.

What makes it interesting for Smith Mountain Lake residents is that it features multiple locations around the area, such as a local alpaca farm, Vinton Police Station and others.

Couple Paul and Sheilah Munger, who have directed all three films of the series, filmed both Princess Cut 2: Hearts on Fire and 3 at the same time in about eight-week span from late October to December 2018. Princess Cut 2 made its premiere in September 2021, and Princess Cut 3 made its debut at the Grandin Theatre in Roanoke in February.

When asked how Smith Mountain Lake came into the picture as a possible filming destination in multiple areas, Sheilah Munger said she was struck with the idea when she was sitting in her office in North Carolina figuring out the plot for the second movie.

She added that they were looking for different alternatives from a typical farm setting and found that there were multiple alpaca farms near where they were originally going to be shooting. She then told her husband about it, and it took off from there.

“I started pursuing more of our shots down around Smith Mountain Lake,” Sheilah Munger said.

She noted that it was her first time visiting SML, but she had originally been to the Vinton and Roanoke area for a film, “Alone Yet Not Alone,” in which she was part of the cast.

Sheilah Munger started out by contacting Jay Pratley and Robbin Martinelli, owners of Smith Mountain Lake Alpaca Farm, to see if they would be interested, which they agreed.

Then they drove around the lake area looking for other film locations. She said what she found convenient about the lake was that the locations they decided to film at were relatively close together and settled in.

“Every location was within 20 minutes of what we were looking for. We needed the rural, we needed the farm, we needed the convenient store, we needed a little bit of everything, and it (SML) had most of everything of what we needed,” Sheilah Munger said.

with Pratley and Martinelli before it becomes available for streaming on Pure Flix in June. She said they also will be making stops to other cities around the country for the same purpose.

Sheilah Munger also noted they have had talks about Princess Cut 4 and said if they go down that road, then they would come back to the SML area so they could still have the same locations as they did in Princess Cut 2 and 3. • 27

The Farmhouse features fresh local produce, a full Barkery, a deli featuring meats such as Boar’s Head, and made-toorder salads, sandwiches and wraps.

“It’s a lot of local products that we’ll be carrying,” Barker said.

The Farmhouse still sells the crab cakes that were popular at their old location every Thursday. Barker said at their original location, they could only cook 200, which would equate to about 100 meals. Now, they can offer more than three times that amount at their new location.

At its new location, The Farmhouse offers sit-down eating, a service that was not available at its former location. They still offer catering, but Barker noted that its upcoming summer weekends are going fast.

“We’re booked most weekends this summer, but we still have some availability,” Barker said.

The new location has displays to help bring the new location some character such as oils, pottery and stained glass in a separate room. Wall art also will be for sale to support local artists, and there is a conference room for them to meet with clients.•

“It’s a good solid event for the community,” Scott Heath said.

Even with the chilling weather, Scott Heath said they had a successful open house and even sold a few tractors. He also said they plan on hosting it next year and already have a deal in place with B99 to do a live broadcast and DJ event at the open house next year.

“I think advertising in the months leading up to it, it’ll help the event to grow,” Scott Heath said.•
