Memorial Day Weekend Events at Shiloh National Military Park
Shiloh National Military Park will host three days of events over Memorial Day weekend 2022. The events and programs will honor and remember our fallen heroes and celebrate the unofficial beginning of summer. “The sound of cannon fire will again rumble across Shiloh battlefield throughout the weekend of May 28 and 29,” announced Superintendent Allen Etheridge. On Saturday and Sunday, park volunteers dressed in period uniforms will present cannon firing demonstrations in the open area south of the park’s visitor center in honor of Memorial Day
weekend. The Shiloh Cannon Crew will be firing a reproduction 6-pounder Field Piece and introducing visitors to the proper drill, ammunition, and equipment used by Civil War artillerists. “These period correct firing demonstrations allow the public an opportunity to use their imaginations and visualize the immense destruction a cannon could deliver,” said Etheridge. Of the 246 cannons in the Battle of Shiloh, 96 of them were 6-pounders, making them the most common big gun on the battlefield. On Saturday there will be four demon-
strations at 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. On Sunday, there will be three demonstrations at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Each demonstration will last approximately 20-minutes and include two cannon firings. All demonstrations are free and open to the public. On Monday, May 30, at 11 a.m., Shiloh National Military Park will host its annual Memorial Day observance ceremony in the Shiloh National Cemetery. This time-honored service will include music, patriotic salutes, and the laying of a wreath on the grave of an unknown soldier. DISCOVER | 11

B.A.S.S. Announces Pickwick Lake, As Final Piece Of 2022 Bassmaster Elite Series Slate After announcing the bulk of the 2022 Bassmaster Elite Series schedule in late July, B.A.S.S. officials have now revealed the final piece of that puzzle. The much-talked-about “to be announced” event will be held June 2-5 on Pickwick Lake out of Counce, Tenn. Daily takeoffs and weigh-ins will be held at Pickwick Landing State Park. With the addition of a second Tennessee-based event, along with a tournament scheduled for Chickamauga Lake on April 7-10, the Elite Series is set to hold nine events in seven states from February to August. “It feels really good to have our entire
2022 schedule released before the autumn even gets here,” said retiring B.A.S.S. CEO Bruce Akin. “Pickwick Lake, Tennessee is a fabulous addition that has provided some great moments from B.A.S.S. in the past — and now that the entire schedule is set, everyone can make their plans to join us. That includes our anglers, tournament staff and the fans.” Pickwick has been a good but sporadic destination for B.A.S.S. major events for the past 23 years. The Bassmaster Tournament Trail first visited the 43,100-acre Tennessee River fishery in 1998 for a Top 100 event that was won by current Elite Series pro Mark
Menendez of Paducah, Ky. Then after consecutive stops from 2000 to 2002, the organization didn’t return to Pickwick again until 2010 and 2011 for a pair of Elite Series events. The latter of those tournaments was won by current Bassmaster LIVE host Davy Hite. After another hiatus, B.A.S.S. returned to Pickwick this year for a Basspro.com Bassmaster Open that was won by Alabama pro Joey Nania and an Elite Series event that featured the first career victory for popular Indiana pro Bill Lowen. Now, the lake will play an important role in a 2022 Bassmaster Angler of the Year race that will be heading into the

homestretch by the time Elite Series pros arrive in Counce. “We are proud to host the Bassmaster Elite Series on Pickwick Lake in Hardin County, Tennessee,” said Beth Pippin, tourism director for the Hardin County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “This top-level tournament will market our lake and community on a national level while strengthening our local economy and bringing anglers and their families to eat, sleep, shop and explore our beautiful area. “We will showcase our newly renovated Pickwick Landing State Park Lodge and Conference Center and treat anglers to the great fishery that Pickwick Lake in Tennessee is known for.” Pickwick offers vast opportunities for anglers with a good mix of offshore
fishing and shallow structure and solid populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass. Beautiful scenery paired with an opportunity to catch a trophy trifecta — smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass of above-average size — are why the fishery was one of Bassmaster Magazine’s Top 10 Best Bass Lakes for 2021. PBR in Paris Returns in 2022
After two sell-out crowds in the first annual event in 2021, Allegro’s PBR in Paris is returning July 1 and 2 to the Henry County Fairgrounds. The Paris Henry County Chamber of Commerce and Nance Productions, owned and operated by Cody and Korie Nance, have teamed up to increase the fan experience and national exposure of the event. “We have doubled the prize money,” Cody Nance exclaimed. “I know first hand if you want to have a bigger event, with higher-ranked riders, you have to get their attention with the prize money. Our goal is to have 3 of the top 10 riders in the world here that weekend” Tickets will become available on

Saturday, April 16th with a meet and greet from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. at Trolinger’s BBQ in Paris, TN. During the event, patrons will be able to meet Nance and purchase their tickets. “Tarzan”, the mechanical bull, will be available to ride for those who purchase tickets. Cody Nance merchandise will also be available. “With multiple nominations for PBR of the year in our first year, we anticipate tickets will sell quickly,” Travis McLeese, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, added. “This event drew people from across the country in 2021, and we don’t expect anything less this year. Soaky Mountain Waterpark Opens in May
Officials for Soaky Mountain Waterpark, 175 Gists Creek Road in Sevierville, Tenn. today announced the waterpark will officially open for the 2022 season on May 14 and 15, and then daily starting May 20. A season pass holder celebration day is planned for Friday, May 20 from 10 am to 6 pm. All pass holders who purchase a 2022 souvenir cup will receive fee refi lls on all soda for the day. According to Dave Andrews, general manager of Soaky Mountain Waterpark, “We are super excited for our third season. We listened to the feedback from our season pass holders and we’ve made our park even better for 2022. Changes include addition of a new dueling watercoaster, The Edge set to open most likely in mid-June.
“‘The Edge’ is going to be a showstopper!” says Andrews. It will be perched on the edge of our waterpark, and will span two football fields in length. It’s fusing together WhiteWater’s Master Blaster water coaster with their iconic Boomerango. But, we are not adding just one slide, we are doubling it for a dueling thrill!” A 70-foot tower will be home to the new slides. On it, double tubes will sit side by side, each in their own assigned lane. When the light turns green they will be propelled down a three-story mega drop that leads to the first valley of the ride. Then, they will be quickly blasted up a hill and into a section featuring a kaleidoscope of colors. “Riders are sure to be mesmerized by the coaster’s AquaLucent rings (colorful
circles) designed into the tube segments,” adds Andrews. “The distance between the rings will get closer and closer, giving riders an appearance of acceleration before they are surprised to see their competitors again as they are dropped into another heart-pounding drop.” A second uphill blast will take riders into another enclosed tube segment, where this time they will be awed by colorful, laser-like AquaLucent stripes. These stripes will start longer, and then become shorter and shorter, giving a sense of sci-fi speed while the riders progress into a turn. When the riders shoot out of their tube, they will see not one, but two imposing Boomerango walls ahead of them, before dropping to the base of the wall, feeling extreme Gs. As the momentum takes the riders up

the parallel walls, they will be able to see their competitors as they feel a sense of weightlessness before sliding back down. As a finishing touch, the riders will go over a zero-G hump to the end of the ride, the finish line is stacked with lights and effects to indicate who is the winner and who went over ‘The Edge’. Andrews states, “The Boomerango is loved the world over, but our guests will be treated to very special version of it that has never done before. Our Boomerango walls are being designed to make the riders feel like they are going off ‘The Edge’ of the coaster. It is going to be spectacular.” Other changes in the waterpark will include an expanded Tacolicious food truck; a new PHILLY UP! cheesesteak food truck; two new deck spaces with 1,000 new seats; and the addition of four more clamshell cabanas, three cabanas and five two-story cabanas. Soaky Mountain Waterpark also includes the Avalaunch, a first-of-its kind watercoaster with four flying saucer features that create a drop-and-dive sensation and one wave curved wall; Soaky

Surge, a massive, 35,000 square foot wave pool capable of generating waves 6 feet high; Black Bear Rapids, an adventure river encompassing 24,000 square feet; and The Hive, a bee-themed playand-spray feature with countless handson activities for younger children. If that’s not enough, there is also Boomers Bay, a super fun kid activity pool area with smaller versions of the adult-size towering slides including Lil’ Rattlers and Mini Mayhem so kids can experience the thrills and chills of the waterpark on their level; an adventure pool with a water obstacle course; a 3,800 square foot flat-water cabana pool for relaxing poolside; and Hang 10essee, a double FlowRider® surfing simulator. In addition to the Avalaunch watercoaster, there are other massive slides including two five-person raft rides; a tubing tower with five flumes; two high-intensity body slides; and a fourlane, head-first mat racing challenge to satisfy everyone’s racing desires. Some of the slides feature translucent tubes which create a swirling array of light effects and others are themed in colors like the
Rainbow’s Revenge which features all of the colors of the rainbow and the American Racer’s Rush which features red, white and blue stars and stripes. Season admission passes are on sale now through April 30 for $109.99 and include one guest daily admission ticket. Starting May1 they will be $119.99. Daily admission tickets are $47.99 (if purchased online) for anyone above 42 inches and $39.99 for anyone under 42 inches. Children ages three and up require a ticket. The waterpark will be open through Labor Day and then weekends in September (weather permitting). Wilderness at the Smokies guests can purchase a discounted daily admission ticket for $19.99. Dollywood’s Rock the Smokies returns to the popular Pigeon Forge park for the first time since 2019, providing an inspirational way to put an exclamation point on the end of summer for families and church groups. How to Grill Pork Chops
A quick soak in an easy brine makes for perfect grilled pork chops every single time. INGREDIENTS
-6 cups cold water -1/3 cup kosher salt -3 tablespoons granulated sugar (optional) -Optional brine flavorings: 4 strips citrus peels, 4 smashed garlic cloves, 1 teaspoon dried or fresh herbs or whole spices, or 2 bay leaves -4 boneless or bone-in pork chops (at least 1-inch thick) -1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper or salt-free spice or dry rub
INSTRUCTIONS
Make the brine. Place 6 cups cold water, 1/3 cup kosher salt, and 3 tablespoons granulated sugar and flavorings if using in a large bowl. Whisk until the salt and sugar are dissolved. Brine for 30 minutes to 2 hours. Add 4 pork chops and make sure they are completely submerged. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours. Heat the grill. About 20 minutes before you’re ready to cook, heat an outdoor grill. For a charcoal grill, arrange the lit coals over one half of the grill and leave the other side empty. For a gas grill, heat all burners to high (at least 450°F). Dry and season the chops. Remove the chops from the brine and discard the brine. Pat the chops very dry with paper towels. Season all over with 1 teaspoon black pepper or spice rub. Sear the chops over high heat. Scrape the grill grates clean if needed. If using a gas grill, lower one of the burners to medium heat. Place the chops on the hotter side of the grill, cover, and cook until grill marks appear on the bottom, about 3 minutes per side. Finish cooking over medium heat. Move the pork chops to the cooler part of the grill. Cover and cook, flipping every few minutes, until the thickest piece registers 145°F on an instant-read thermometer, 4 to 7 minutes more depending on the thickness of the chops. Rest the pork chops for 5 minutes. Transfer the pork chops to a serving platter, cover loosely with aluminum foil, and let rest at least 5 minutes before serving. NOTES Storage: Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Spring is in the air, and spring sports are in full swing! Dynamix Physical Therapy is not only West Tennessee’s leader in physical therapy, but the company is also the elite provider in sports medicine and performance. Dynamix is proud to have a team of elite individuals who are out on the fields this spring covering baseball and softball teams of high schools throughout the region. These athletic trainers are making sure student athletes prevent injury, if possible, or make sure the athlete does not injure themselves further when they do get hurt. Head athletic trainer for Dynamix, Elisha Wells, gives some insights into what all goes in to being an athletic trainer. She shares her story about what it is like being an athletic trainer. What does a day in the life of an athletic trainer look like? EW: Some ATCs split their time between clinic and field, while some are full-time out at the schools they cover. ATCs typically put in no less than 12 hours a day, six to seven days a week for roughly six to seven months a year. We always have an open communication line with our coaches, parents and even physicians to check on our student athletes. Some of the Dynamix ATCs go into the schools we cover for weekly well checks and to touch base with coaches and athletes. Every day is a new day in the life of a Dynamix ATC. What is your favorite part of your job? EW: My favorite part of my job is that every day presents something new. It is not the same thing over and over, day in and day out. There is always an injury to be assessed, an exercise program to be made and a coach, parent or MD to discuss an injury. What makes Dynamix West Tennessee’s leader in sports medicine? EW: It's me, of course! Just kidding. It is the way we care for all of our "kids," as we call the athletes. I treat each of my athletes like they are my own child. I have always told any student trainer that I have mentored to not have their athlete do an exercise, lift or activity that you would not do yourself or let your own child or family member do. We tailor each workout program specific to the athlete, the sport(s) they play or the injury itself. We speak weekly, sometimes daily, with referring physicians, parents and coaches to keep them updated on the progress of the athlete. The relationships we also build within the communities where we serve is one that sets us apart from everyone else. Another part that makes us the best in the business is we are continuously growing and evolving our team through continued education opportunities for physical therapists, PTAs and ATCs. Our leadership team invests in us and views us as valued team members, and because of that, it builds confidence in ourselves as well as the company to serve West Tennessee with the most elite physical therapy and sports medicine programs in the region. Historic Collinsville Now Open for 2022 Historic Collinsville Pioneer Settlement in rural Montgomery County, Tennessee opened its 2022 season April 1-3, 2022. Visitors to the historic site were greeted by new faces and can expect more activities throughout the year. New directors Kristy Proctor and Mark Britton are planning fun, engaging and educational activities each weekend, beginning with “Pioneer Prankster’s Trail of Tricks and Journey of Jokes” for April Fools Weekend. Visitors can follow the foolish trickster’s path of pranks, read the silly jokes and answer true/false historic trivia questions. Other April events include “Cherish
an Antique Weekend,” April 7-10, where visitors gained ideas for using past items in the present. April 9 is Spring Planting day where volunteers helped fi ll the property’s landscape with color. During Easter weekend, April 14-16, activities included help-yourself games like a lucky foot race, an 1870s-style Easter Egg Roll and more. Historic Collinsville is closed on Easter Sunday. April 27-May 1 is designated “Time Travel Through the Trees” where guests will learn how to identify significant weather and historic issues by looking at tree rings. They’ll also connect history to the present-day by discovering where else in the community they can
locate specific trees. Visiting Collinsville gives guests the opportunity for a self-paced, self-guided stroll through a re-creation of the past with an audio tour. The 40-acre, openair property showcases pioneer life from 1840-1900 with 16 authentically furnished buildings. See the earliest “first home” to the expansive Dogtrot House, a tobacco-drying house, smokehouse, church/schoolhouse, wildlife center, loom house, cobbler’s shop, teacher’s home and more. Picnic tables are placed throughout the property and a covered pavilion with tables and restrooms is also on site. A visitor center greets guests and

offers period souvenirs. Beginning April 1, Historic Collinsville Pioneer Settlement will be open Thursday – Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and Sundays 1- 4 p.m. through October, except for holidays. Regular admission is $8 for ages 13 and up; $4 for ages 6-12 and free to children under age 6. Military receive a 10% discount with a valid ID. Butter making is $1 per person. Special event admission varies. The property is open other days and times for groups of six or more guided tours, rentals, weddings, or special events. “We are privileged to have a historical asset like this in our own commu-
nity,” said Visit Clarksville Chairman Matt Cunningham. “We hope everyone locally, as well as visitors traveling here, will come out and enjoy learning about pioneer life and this history of the region at Historic Collinsville.” About Historic Collinsville Historic Collinsville Pioneer Settlement opened in 1974 to give children a “hands-on” experience outside of the classroom about life from the 1840s through the turn of the century. It has been open to the public since 1997, recreating the past with restored histori-
cal structures, each filled with authentic period furnishings that show a glimpse of life before and after the Civil War. The property is located at 4711 Weakley Road in Southside, 20 minutes south of downtown Clarksville. Montgomery County Government purchased Historic Collinsville from founders Glenn and JoAnn Weakley in 2018. The property is managed and marketed by Visit Clarksville.
