A

s mayor I have many duties, none more important than spreading the word about our community and the great opportunities that await you here. Graham residents take pride in having America’s Largest Downtown Square and home to one of the oldest economic development groups in Texas, The Graham Industrial Association and so much more.

As we celebrate our 150th anniversary this year, we reflect on what Colonel E.S Graham and his family wanted from a community, a place to live, work and enjoy the great atmosphere of the North Texas Hill country. Our Food Truck competition kicks off the first weekend in June with over 40 food trucks competing for $16,000 in prizes and finishing with a concert at the Young County Arena. We move straight to our 4th of 6 – 2022-2023 Graham Community Guide

July parade and recognition of our servicemen who have represented our country all over the world. We end the year with our Christmas on the Square and lighted parade.

The last two years have challenged our resolve.

Overall, the community of Graham is fortunate to have such kindness and generosity, which I have experienced firsthand over the last 35 years as a resident and now mayor. The success we have experienced in our community is a direct result of the citizens who live here and the visitors who come to enjoy our town and spread the word about Graham literally all over the world.

The “heart” of Graham is strong, fierce, loyal, and compassionate. It has been my honor to serve Graham these last few years and working together our future is brighter and will continue to be the best place to live, work and play!

Up to 50 food trucks are chosen for the event and on top of various prizes in other categories, are competing for the $10,000 grand prize.

The event kicks off each year with the Possum Pedal bicycle ride in the morning and the footnote of the day is a concert held at the Young County Arena.

“The Food Truck Championship is very important (...) because it brings so many out-of-towners here,” CVB Manager Casyn Smith said. “It brings people to our town and allows them to see what Graham is really about and kind of experience our community here. And there’s so many people after (the event) that come back to Graham to visit and see our towns, spend money in our town.”

uring the scorching June summer heat one event draws thousands to America’s largest downtown square for a multitude of delicious delights from food trucks all vying for thousands in prizes. Since 2015, the Graham Food Truck Championship of Texas has been the largest event for the city and a draw for tourism and commerce.

Origins In 2014, Jennifer Conway, then Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO, and Sarah Lundgren, then Graham Convention and Visitors Bureau Manager, worked with a committee to come up with a list of ideas to get people to visit Graham before forming the idea of the event.

One year later in 2015, the first Food Truck Championship of Texas kicked off on the Graham downtown square where it was held each year until 2020, drawing thousands of visitors to enjoy a bite to eat with musical entertainment throughout the day.

“There are so many returning food trucks that we get back every single year. No matter what, they know the first Saturday in June they’re going to be in Graham, Texas. The response that we get from the food trucks is always extremely positive. They’re always very thankful that they get to come and serve and reach a larger community at zero cost to them,” Smith said. “(...) recommendations from them are always helpful for us. You know, ‘How can we make this better for you next year,’ and things of that nature.”

One of the main objectives of the Food Truck Committee is choosing trucks to make sure there is a variety in the options available, Smith said.

From barbecue to cajun to eastern food, the event offers a variety of food trucks each year. In years past the event has had trucks from Oklahoma, Arkansas and other states looking to win the grand prize.

“We don’t want a barbecue food truck championship,” she said. “There’s so many different things that these food trucks serve and we really want to set a good example of well-rounded (options).”

Volunteers A big part of the Food Truck Championship of Texas is the volunteers who help throughout the day to make the event possible. Both the volunteers on the ground on the day of the event and those who plan leading up to the event make sure things are operational.

“Volunteers are a big part of the Food Truck Championship,” Smith said. “We have about 400 volunteers, if you can believe it. It’s crazy how many we have. We have separate volunteers for the food truck event and for the concert. So it’s a very large town effort, (and) group effort, that is put together.”

Food trucks that come to the event must apply through the Food Truck Committee which contains volunteers who help choose the trucks which will be on display and the logistics of the event.

“The food trucks will apply through our website, foodtruckchampionshipoftexas.com.

They will apply through there, we receive the application and if they’re missing any documents, we’ll reach out to them and say ‘Hey, you’re missing this document and we need it before we can review your application and move forward.’ And then we have a committee that all of the applications go to and we will look over the trucks,” Smith said.

“We will look over the look of the truck, the menu of the truck, see if the truck has all of their required permits and everything like that. From there, we’ll email the truck and say 'congratulations, you’ve been accepted'. They start posting on their social media, ‘Hey, we’re going to be at the Food Truck Championship of Graham, Texas, at the downtown square on June 4 and (...) we want all of our regulars to come out and support.’ So that’s a great way for them to get involved as well.”

Local Impact According to Smith, around 15,000 visitors come and go to the food truck event and around 4,500 to the food truck concert which ends the day of events. Those visitors are staying in hotels, eating at local restaurants and contributing to the local economy.

“All of the merchants (...) around the square, obviously, receive a lot of benefit from the food truck, but so do others in town,” Graham CVB CEO Cathy Partridge said. “I know there are people who will eat at the food truck (event), but then be here all afternoon and then go to a restaurant that night, go shopping and just (will be) spending the day (...) here. And especially those that are going to the concert as well, they’re spending time in the afternoon exploring other things. So I look at it from the perspective of someone

coming. It’s a day’s worth of fun in Graham.

Some planned things, some free time to explore the things on your own and then the big concert.”

One of the things that should be done ahead of visiting Graham around the time of the event is to plan ahead and check availability of hotels in the area, Smith said.

“Our hotels fill up so fast, and especially for this event,” she said. “A lot of the food trucks will end up staying overnight just so they can get up and get ready and get their food truck here early and get set up before everybody gets here. So our food trucks will get here early. We have the Possum Pedal Bike Ride that goes on that morning as well.

So they will get here a day early. So if you are needing a hotel book as soon as possible. If you even think you want to come, go ahead and book your hotel.”

Graham Youth Sports Preparing the next generation of Steers, Lady Blues

outh sports serve several roles in a community. It brings communities together, and teaches life lessons at an early age in an engagi engaging ging manne manner. er. r

While W ile Graham High School has experienced Wh eed d success in several sports, that success begins at a young age while participating in the youth sports leagues offered in Graham.

Whether it is baseball, softball, basketball, football, soccer or cheer, Graham offers several opportunities for youth to take the field. Each sport offers leagues run by community volunteers where young athletes, starting at four years old and and as old as 14 years old can compete and learn more about the sports they love, regardless of experience.

These leagues often receive support and additional coaching from the coaches at Graham High School as these leagues raise the next generation of Steers and Lady Blues.

“Youth sports are our lifeline for success at high school. That’s why we had a youth baseball coaches meeting to streamline what we are doing at high school,” Steers baseball coach Allen McGee said. “I truly believe it takes a village to raise kids and help them reach their goals and full potential on and off the field.”

Steers basketball coach Kris Hise hosted Little Dribblers practices just months after moving to Graham and taking over the Steers basketball program.

Whether it is at practice or in a game, coaches from GHS provide support. Members of the Lady Blues softball team have served

as umpires on the field and Lady Blues coach Adam Arrington has umpired behind the plate.

“This is our future and it’s great that Graham provides a place for our kids to play here in town and they don’t have to travel out of town,” Arrington said. “The bigger we can grow our youth sports program, the better it will be for our high school programs in the future.”

Graham Sports Authority, formed in 2018, was designed to create a centralized sign-up and information hub.

Sign-up information, standings, schedules and other information can be found at grahamsportsauthority.com. If cost is an issue, multiple leagues offer scholarships so that no child is forced to miss out on the opportunities provided by youth sports.

The Rock R

esiding in the old Graham Train Station at Elm Street and Sixth Street is a place where high school students gather and hang out in a positive atmosphere. The Rock offers area high school youth a place for friendship and fellowship in a Christian environment outside of a church setting.

The idea of The Rock started around 1999 inside the halls of First United Methodist Church with a conversation between David Flynn and 16-year-old Justin Pitcock.

As other high school students pressed Flynn to find a way to make it happen, a committee was formed. The committee of parents sought to figure out what the idea would consist of and how to make it a reality.

The group was eventually led to the old train station. At the time the building was the Depot Steakhouse and the owners were looking to sell and retire.

Work continued in January 2004. With donations rolling in from the Graham community, a charitable organization, The

Rock Inc. was formed. In mid-2005 the old train station purchase was complete. A grand opening was held in May 2006.

A spark came from a former Graham High School student who had returned and wanted to visit a place that meant a lot to her as a student. Ashley Hodges moved to Graham in April 2007. The Rock became a place where Hodges could form a new life in her new home.

“The last six weeks of school, I went back to Millsap every day,” Hodges said. “It was really important for me because I didn’t go to school here. And then school was out. You have summer and I didn’t know anybody. I just kind of went to The Rock with the one, maybe two girls that I hung out with. It was really important because my parents were pretty protective. I couldn’t go hang out at people’s houses that my parents didn’t know.

And to be new, that’s kind of a hard thing

to meet everybody. When we went to The Rock, they knew that was a good place for me to go, and it was fine. And so we just hung out there.”

After graduating high school in 2009, Hodges did not return until 2019. With the shutdown and struggles to reopen, it took a renewed effort to bring The Rock back to what it once was.

In July 2021, a student advisory board was formed consisting of two members of each class at GHS. The board planned a fundraiser, workday, theme nights and other activities.

Hodges said the board was mostly comprised of students who had never visited The Rock in the past or had not visited often before the shutdown.

Hodges said early enthusiasm from the advisory board helped get The Rock up and running upon its return.

“Honestly, getting a couple of those students who are on the now Student Advisory Board, when they walked into The Rock, they were ready to grab a hold and make it their place, which is exactly what we wanted them to do,” Hodges said.

The advisory board will continue to plan theme nights and the football season will usher in the Fifth Quarter, a football postgame activity for GHS students hosted by local churches and held at The Rock. Hodges said The Rock is open during the games for students who do not want to attend.

The Rock is open to all area high school students from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights at 300 Elm Street.

L

ocated right outside Graham is a 20-acre ranch provided as an outlet for veterans and their families at no charge year-round.

The Young County Warrior Ranch was established in 2011 and brings veterans and their families together with activities and fellowship.

The Young County Warrior Ranch is a nonprofit organization that owns and operates a 20-acre ranch with a bunk house, stock tank, fellowship hall and other amenities which are available to veterans year-round.

“We make this place available to veterans for free whenever (...) it's not booked for a counseling workshop and things like that.

If it's available, they can come and use

it,” Young County Warrior Ranch Board Member Andrea Lowery said. “They can bring their family here and play horseshoes and fish in our stocked pond and just get away from the city or (...) enjoy the quiet.

We have veterans who on their way home between Fort Benning and Hereford, Texas, who always stop over and spend the night here because it's a comfortable place. (...) So we want this to be available for use to veterans that hold weddings here, family reunions, all those kinds of things."

For 10 years the organization has hosted the Operation Gunsmoke Helicopter Hog Hunt which serves as the organization’s annual fundraiser to make sure the facility can remain a service for veterans and their families.

“It’s important because we exist solely to support our veterans. That’s our mission, that’s what we do,” Young County Warrior Ranch Board President Dana Lindley said.

“So our fundraiser allows us to provide a much-needed venue with our new partners in the Warrior Connection that this ranch is going to be used on a regular basis now, and to help provide services for the veterans and have a place for them to come to get guidance and counseling on some issues that they have going on. It’s exactly what we wanted to do with the ranch at (its) inception, was to have this ranch work for our veterans on a daily basis. We’re not there yet, but we’re moving in that direction.”

The Warrior Connection partnered with YCWR to host monthly residential retreats and services to provide healing for veterans and their families at the ranch. The ranch and hog hunt fundraiser also serve a purpose in linking veterans with services.

“I think a lot of veterans who come here learn about services that are available to them, just through the network of different organizations that are coming here now. It just keeps getting bigger,” Lowery said. “So there's not only that, but they also just know there are groups of people who feel like they struggle with the same things they do, enjoy the same things they do. (...) the connections are amazing.”

The fundraising event has grown tremendously from previous years, moving from just over 60 hunters in 2021 to a record of over 200 hunters in 2022. The event costs $1,000 per hunter involved and some of those involved are sponsored and shoot for free from donations. Donors can give $1,000 or another monetary value they can afford for a veteran to participate in the hunt. Opportunities to sponsor a future hunter are available through YCWR. At the event in 2022 were visitors from 38 states and three countries, with many veterans and active duty military members. Lindley said the event at the ranch also serves to provide connections and fellowship for many veterans.

“We witness it every year that you will have a positive connection, a positive thing that happens with two of our veterans or a veteran in some way that they haven't seen in a long time,” he said. “Last year (in 2021) at the fire pit over here, there were two veterans. One was staring at the other across the fire pit and he stared at him and stared at him and it was just disbelief. (...) he called out his name and the guy turned around and looked and he said 'Yes, sir,' and he said, 'Well, I thought you were dead. I saw you get shot and I thought you were dead,' and they reconnected. So those types of things. Myself personally, (...) I want to

know about those times and those reunions and they happen every year.”

Lindley said several years ago a group of active duty Army Rangers who were redeployed back to the United States from Afghanistan visited the ranch in Graham.

He said he did not believe the group that visited would get much from the hog hunt, but was proven wrong.

“We do our hunt on Saturday and these two particular young men go out and they shoot and you can see it, and you could witness it in their facial expressions when they're coming off of the helicopters the

enjoyment, the excitement, that adrenaline high that they're on,” Lindley said. “(...) at that time, our method of operation was for them to take their magazines and everything, equipment that they had that they were using of ours, reload magazines and do some other things. But anyway, a young man kneeled down and he was trying to grab rounds to reload magazines and he was just fumble fingers, he was just nervous. He was just so antsy and I put my (hand on his) shoulder and called him by name (...) and said 'It's okay. Take a breath, relax. We're not in a hurry now. Just enjoy the moment,' and he dropped everything

and raised his hands in there and he said 'That's the most exciting thing I've ever done in my life’ (...). But it's different. It's hard to explain. I've talked to several people (and) it's really hard to convey in words the emotion that you feel getting off of that helicopter after going up. It's just amazing. And then when they get together afterwards and do their mini after action reviews with one another comparing notes and just watching that camaraderie come together it's therapeutic, it's healing. It's a lot of different things and it's just a joy to watch.”

t was only a couple of years ago that I was new to the community of Graham. It is incredible to think back over the time I was settling in my new neighborhood and realize how impactful the connections made here have significantly enhanced my experience. Now when I attend an event such as Crawfish & Cannons, a concert at Memorial Auditorium, shopping at a local retailer, going to the doctor’s office, a City Council meeting, out to eat, or just walk the Downtown Square, I meet and greet many people I did not know just two short years ago. This personal period of transformation has extended unlimited opportunities to be a small part of the vitality of the great city of Graham.

The Graham Chamber of Commerce, which has been serving the community for over 100 years, is also in a period of transformation.

That is excellent news! Leonard Sweet is quoted as saying, “If you don’t change, you die. It’s that simple.” Our desire to change has come about due to the many world and regional events over the past couple of years.

Banquet

Businesses and individuals are honored each year during the Grahammy awards held as a part of the Graham Chamber of Commerce Banquet. This year's event was held in-person Tuesday, Feb. 8 at the Young County Arena.

The annual awards ceremony serves as a way to recognize individuals in the community who have made an impact.

Awards are presented for the Chamber Ambassador of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Chamber Board President’s Choice, Business of the Year, and the Salt Works Award.

Winners are chosen based on nominations by members of the community. All nominations are then reviewed by a committee consisting of chamber board members who select the final winners.

Shana Weatherbee-Wolfe Citizen of the Year The Graham Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award went to Shana Wolfe. Dorman Holub presented the award to Wolfe after an introduction detailing her involvement in the community.

“Our next recipient is an amazing person. She is genuine in her life. She has a deep love for people.

She walks the walk and talks the talk of a Christian woman. She blesses the lives of others and looks forward for ways to fill needs in our community. She is a servant in every aspect of the word (...),” Holub said.

Adam Anderle Volunteer of the Year The Graham Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year award went to Adam Anderle. The 2022 Graham Chamber of Commerce Board President, Chance Condron, presented the award to Anderle.

“I'm honored to be able to present this award to a man tonight that I've served with at our church for several years. I often find myself mimicking him whenever it comes to dealing with children. He has been so active in our little league baseball, he served as president for years and years and years. He also is involved in little league football. He's a deacon in the Oak Street Baptist Church, (...) and I will say primarily, I believe, his calling is to the youth. And again, (...) whenever I say I've mimicked him, I've taken over at kids church, and I find myself in the way that I speak, speaking to the children exactly like Adam Anderle,” Condron said.

Renee's Dance Factory Business of the Year The Graham Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award went to Renee’s Dance Factory. Former Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO Krisa De La Cruz presented the award to Renee Hobson.

“She has been a dance instructor for a very long time and has taught thousands of kids hear in Graham. Not only that, she is an instructor, and please don't judge her instructing ability on my dancing performance as a child (...), but she's also a mentor and she's a role model. She's someone that kids look up to, and want to be like, so it's more than just dance, and I know she feels that way also. In addition to that, and I just found this so impressive and overwhelming and really makes me so proud to have a business like this in Graham, but Renee's Dance Factory has never told someone that they can't participate in dance due to financial constraints,” De La Cruz said.

Gordon Grubbs Salt Works Award The Graham Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award went to Gordon Grubbs. Former Graham Chamber of Commerce CEO Krisa De La Cruz presented the award to Grubbs.

“For me, to know someone who served in this community as a principal, as a Sunday School teacher, as a director of a local nonprofit, and really has for me become a friend also and a mentor, is a pretty special thing. (They are) somebody who's just had a genuine impact on the community of Graham and when you think of the Salt Works Award, you know what we mean by that (and) I think Joe Finfrock one year said it best, but salt of the earth. Just that good salt of the earth person and Gordon Grubbs I cannot think of a person who epitomizes this more,” De La Cruz said.

Dorman Holub President's Choice The Graham Chamber of Commerce President’s Choice award went to Dorman Holub. Former Graham Chamber of Commerce Board President, Toby Reddell, presented the award to Holub.

“I moved to Graham in 2015, 2016, and I've known this man my entire life, having dealt in sports with his children and didn't really know him, know him, until I moved back,” Reddell said. “I didn't realize the wealth of information and what he brought to this community until I really got to sit down and speak with him.

He really is a wealth of knowledge and if you don't know Dorman Holub, you need to sit down and speak with him and now if you want to talk to him for five minutes, plan on being there for two hours. But you're gonna learn a lot about Graham and the history of this town that you never even thought to believe.”

My name is Casyn Smith, I grew up right here in Graham, TX and came back to Graham after graduating with a hospitality degree at Oklahoma State University.

Right before my graduation I reached out to the Graham Chamber of Commerce to see if they had any positions available that I could apply for. I was informed that the Convention and Visitors Bureau was going to need a manager shortly after my graduation. I was immediately intrigued and now I have the best job in Graham As the Manager of the Convention and Visitors Bureau, it is my job to bring out of town travelers to Graham to enjoy everything we have to offer. In one day, we can showcase our town to someone who will buy from our local stores, eat at our restaurants, and stay at our hotels.

There are many things I love about Graham, and I could go on for hours, but just to name a few: Graham Steer Football on Friday nights, The Food Truck Championship of Texas, and our close proximity to bodies of water where families can fish and boat all day long.

Looking at Graham from a visitor’s view point is interesting, we have so much history in our town with Fort Belknap right up the road and so many other historical hot spots. Graham and our surrounding area is a great place during the fall hunting season, with the Brazos River running strongly across our city lines.

T

he history of Graham, Texas has always been wrapped up in its people, places and events. In the early 1860s, Col. Edwin Smith Graham and his brother, Gustavus Adolphus Graham visited Texas as shareholders in the Texas Emigration and Land Company. In 1871, the two brothers purchased a salt works on Salt Creek from Absalom Bobo Gant. Edmonia Graham, the wife of G.A. Graham mentioned in her first letter back home to Kentucky of the Warren Wagon Train Massacre that had recently occurred before their arrival that year.

At the time, all the territory was populated with buffalo, and the fact that those animals seemed to prefer this section prompted the Graham brothers to observe it would be one of the finest cattle raising districts in the entire state.

In 1872, G.A. Graham and his chainman, A.B. Gant began to survey and plot the town site with unusually wide streets, large blocks, and spacious lots, with the name of the town, of course, coming from that of its two founders.

The page reproduced below is the first issue of The Graham Leader. The issue was featured in The Leader's Centennial Edition in 1972.

A time capsule was buried near Shawnee Park following the city of Graham's centennial celebration in 1972.

Fifty years later, in April 2022, the time capsule was opened and the buttons above were one of many items inside.

Other items included letters, tape recordings of centennial activities, a Graham High School yearbook, among other items.

Young County fell apart in 1865, but was reorganized in 1874. An election in the county selected Graham as the new county seat.

The Graham Leader, owned and edited by Major J.W. Graves, printed its first edition on August 16, 1876. This publication is still in existence and is the oldest publication in Northwest Texas. The Leader is also the oldest business institution in Young County.

In 1876, Graham’s first subscription school began with an enrollment of 50 students with J.H. Brantley serving as superintendent.

On December 24, 1876, Rev. Charles Holt Dobbs found five persons who were Presbyterians and organized the first Presbyterian Church in Graham. This congregation of twelve built a small building on south Oak Street which was destroyed by a wind just before completion. Undaunted, the congregation secured a second lot at the corner of First and Elm Street and completed their building in 1877 at a cost of $1,000. The Presbyterians generously offered the use of their building to other churches until they could complete their own buildings.

On February 15-16, 1877, forty cattlemen of North and West Texas gathered in Graham and formed the Cattle Raisers Association of Texas. The name was changed to Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association [TSCRA] in 1921. The organizational meeting was held under a large oak tree near the northwest corner of the downtown public square.

By 1915, hotel lobbies and cafes were the gathering places in Graham where men were anxious to get in on the wealth offered by an oil producing well. In 1930, the McCloud well near Graham blew oil throughout the countryside for miles. High school boys were allowed out of class for two days to dig ditches around the well to ease the hazard of fire and to save the oil.

One of the occurrences in Graham has been the development of oil and gas resources in Young County. The first gas well in Texas was drilled by the Graham brothers near the salt works in the early 1870s.

As Graham celebrates their 150th year of existence in 2022, we continue to be a prosperous, growing city of about 9,000 people. We’re always ready to tell and re-tell our stories of the people, places and events of our community. Just ask us!
