A letter from your executive Director Are you ready for spring? I sure am! Spring and summer are my favorite seasons. Bluebonnets and wildflowers in bloom, trees and grass greening up, fresh peaches – just an overall a sense of renewal and growth.

Renewal and growth are a couple of things we’re focusing on here at the Chamber as well.

We’ve been working hard to make a few changes; do things a little differently. Not that they were wrong or bad before, but there is always room for improvement. We offered our first Business After Hours in February and as of the writing of this, we are working on scheduling more in upcoming months. We held a meet the Candidate night and have begun having Social Media and Digital Marketing classes at the Chamber. We’ve got a few more things in the works as well, so stay tuned for new things. If you are a businessperson and have suggestions of how we can help you better, please let us know. We’re here to serve you and we want your feedback.

Don’t worry, we’re still doing some of the same things that our community has come to love, which includes the Mexia Rodeo and Boomin’ on the 4th. The 92nd Annual Mexia Rodeo will be held June 23-25 this year and our Boomin’ on the 4th activities at the City Park will be on July 4th.

Also on that day, the Lion’s Club will host their annual Car Show in Downtown. Yes, there are many things to do this summer and we’re looking forward to all of them. Please follow our Mexia Rodeo Facebook page for more details on the rodeo and stay tuned to the Chamber Facebook page and website for more details on the Boomin’ on the 4th and other events. The city has contracted with Simpson Fireworks for the fireworks show this year and we’re looking forward to that amazing show, provided by hometown people.

Take some time and visit Fort Parker and The Old Fort. Take a drive and explore the many things that Mexia, Limestone County and the surrounding area have to offer. Visit our local businesses and show support for the area businesses, they appreciate you and we do too! #keepitlocalmexia – which includes Mexia and all of the surrounding area. Need some Motivation and/or Strength?

This quarter’s devotional is provided to us by Pastor Izaac Hernandez of Iglesia Pentecostal Camino Church

If you are anything like me, you might be struggling with your New Years resolutions already. I haven’t been able to hit the gym like I’ve wanted. I haven’t ate as healthy as I planned. I also committed to read the entire Bible this year. I am currently 3 weeks behind.

But, speaking with some people, friends and strangers, we all seem to have the same issues. No time, no support, or we get too tired. We often at times, find that after a long day of working hard, or having to deal with family issues, there always seems to be a legitimate reason we haven’t been able to do the things we set as goals just a few months ago. So we lose any motivation we had when we started.

All of this results in built up stress and fatigue. I think about how far behind I am and become a little depressed that my goals seem so unattainable now. But I know God has promised me something. Strength.

God has taught me that when times get tough, or when I just feel too tired, that He has the strength for me to carry on. I need not rely on my own strength. Exodus 15:2 says “The Lord is my strength and my song…”

Phillipians 4:13 says that “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”. All of this is to encourage you to keep on working towards what you’ve set out to do. When I remember that I can lean on someone who can do it all, my day to day problems seem small. Isaiah 41:10 says “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand”. We have someone in our corner willing to help us if we let Him. If you want to learn more about how God can help, I encourage you to seek out a local church to help. And those of us that consider ourselves Christians, let us work on helping out each other the way God helps us out. We are all in this together!

Merl Shivers was a special, well-known lady in our community, and is missed by so many. She touched the lives of many students during her teaching career.

I personally remember her fondly from teaching math in the old Middle School, that is now the MISD School Museum. Math was not my favorite subject, however Mrs. Shivers was always caring and concerned and took time with all students to ensure the fundamentals of the subject were grasped. She was patient and you truly felt like you mattered to Mrs. Shivers.

Special thank you to the Shivers family; Terry Don, Janise, Chris, and JoAnna, for sharing one of your favorite recipes with us. We are honored to be able to share in this family favorite from her recipe collection.

Zero deficiencies on annual survey a huge step forward for Mexia SSLC When the annual survey team arrived at Mexia State Supported Living Center recently, director Melinda Gentry was nervous.

It wasn’t a lack of trust in the process. It had been several years since Gentry helped guide the center out from under a “directed plan of correction” resulting from failing to correct deficiencies found during an annual recertification survey. The Mexia team worked hard to improve services and supports, resulting in surveys in the last few years with only a few citations, which were quickly corrected.

The nervousness came from how thin her staff was stretched. Mexia SSLC had more than 120 employees out with Covid – and that’s on top of the fact that the employee fill rate at Mexia is around 60 percent. Between the sick staff and the vacancies, job titles meant little.

“We have had all of our professional staff working the homes, in food service and housekeeping,” Gentry said. “It’s been a true full team effort to keep things functioning and meet our standards of care for the people who live here. The commitment and dedication that the employees have for our residents and this facility is amazing.”

HHSC’s Long-term Care Regulation (LTCR) team stayed nearly a week, inspecting what seemed like every inch of the facility.

During the exit interview, Gentry and other Mexia leadership were listening to the introductory spiel that always preceded the findings.

“She kind of just lightly throws in there, ‘we’ve found zero deficiencies,”

When it comes to the annual recertification survey, the Mexia State Supported Living Center has come a long way in a short time.

Gentry said. “It caught us off guard … I thought we need to pause so I can laugh or cry or something.”

SSLC Director of Quality Improvement Amanda Klekar explained it is rare for a center to receive zero deficiencies during their annual survey “because HHS Regulatory surveyors must ensure compliance with hundreds of standards.”

Among 13 SSLCs surveyed annually, only Austin (in 2020 and 2018) and San Antonio (in 2020) had recently received zero deficiencies.

SSLC Associate Commissioner Laura Cazabon-Braly said she was “incredibly proud” of Mexia for their quick transition from being in a directed plan of correction to receiving zero deficiencies.

“To go from that to this in such a short time is amazing,” she said. “And they accomplished it in the middle of a pandemic with staffing shortages.

They are an amazing team.”

The survey team looks at “anything

and everything,” Gentry said. They were out on the units by 10 a.m. on Monday morning and they’re examining resident care, records, environmental services, governing body — essentially every aspect of running the facility.

Gentry has been director at Mexia SSLC for four years, and the survey process was difficult at first.

“Because of the DPOC, we were forced to come together as a team – that’s the only way we got out of it,” she said.

Now, Gentry is elated on behalf of those employees who have been a part of that journey.

“You just almost want to burst with excitement that all the work that we put in — you’d have those days where you’re so tired you can barely even function, but we just kept pushing through — it finally paid off,” she said. “We finally get to show the state that we’re as good as we’re telling everybody we are.”

LET’S RODEO! The time for the Mexia Rodeo is quickly approaching.

This will be the 92nd annual rodeo, sponsored by the Mexia Area Chamber of Commerce, and it will be held on June 23-25, 2022. Our Rodeo is a family-friendly event that is looked forward to by our hometown, surrounding areas, and rodeo enthusiasts alike! If you’ve never been, mark your calendars and plan to join us as we rope, ride, and sit on the edge of our seats for heart-thumping action all night long! For that matter, join us all 3 nights!

We will be having Mutton Bustin’, Youth Ribbon Roping, Youth Barrel Racing and Youth Breakaway in addition to the usual events of Bull Riding, Barrell Racing, Break Away, Bare Back, Ranch Bronc, Team Roping, Tie Down Calf Roping, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling, and the ever-popular Wild Cow Milking. We have some fun things lined up for entertainment during the rodeo and you don’t want to miss that!

Putting on a Rodeo is a lot of work, and our Rodeo Committee works tirelessly year-round to make this happen. We’d like to take a moment to give them a shout out and introduce you.

Rodeo Committee Chairman is Chunky Busby.

Chunky has been on the committee for 20 years. The Assistant Chairman is Ryan Fleming. Our Rodeo Committee Secretary is Cheryl Hancock. We have help with concession cooking and gate staffing from our other 20-year committee veteran, Dr. Stan Sewell. We also

have Kyle Hancock, Michael Jones, Kelly and Rhonda Craig, Robert LaFoy, Leonard Smith, Frank Pruitt, Cathy Owens, Revendy Rhodes, James Wiley, and Mikal LaFoy, all with many years of service on the committee.

The Executive Director of the Mexia Area Chamber of Commerce, Traci LaFoy also works to serve alongside of the committee, behind the scenes, and at the rodeo, to pull all of this together.

Heading up the “Best Concession Stand in Texas” is Michael Jones and Cheryl Hancock. They receive assistance from Cathy Owens, Dr. Stan Sewell, Brandi Jones, and several other faithful ones to help in the concession stand, including employees from Incommons Bank who serve on Friday Nights. We are currently seeking others to help in the concession stand on Thursday and Saturday nights.

Many spouses of the committee, and other volunteers from the area are involved too. All our volunteers and committee members are important and valued. This is truly a team effort and a great team we have!

April is Stress Awareness Month Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Offers Tips to Lessen Stress Emily Fisher, CEA-FCH emily.fisher@ag.tamu.edu

Since 1992, Stress Awareness Month has been observed in April to shed light on the increase of chronic stress and to provide resources to lessen the effects of stress on our health. Stress normally occurs in our lives, such as giving a presentation in front of people, planning a wedding, or dealing with the stressors brought on by illness or COVID-19. These stressors have an affect on us, but we can work through them and learn some resiliency skills.

Though, when there is constant stress affecting our lives, this can lead to chronic stress. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), COVID-19 has impacted both young and old, as many face challenges, losses, illness, and mental health challenges.

So how does stress affect us? First, we must understand what stress is. According to the American Institute of Stress, “Stress is a natural, physical and mental reaction to life experiences…Your body responds to stress by releasing hormones that increase your heart and breathing rates and ready your muscles to respond [to the situation].” The body is affected when there is constant stress (chronic stress), where your body does not bounce

back to its natural state and continues to release hormones

that increase your heart and breathing rates, which takes its toll on the body. Some common signs of stress include

frequent headaches, neck and back pain, insomnia, stomach pain, depression, and many more.

With chronic stress, the heart beats faster increasing

blood pressure and blood sugar in our bodies. Under

stress, the liver releases more sugar, which over time,

increases risk of Type 2 Diabetes, or if already diabetic,

causes more harm to the body. Stress also causes blood vessels to constrict, which can lead to high blood pressure

or affect those who already suffer from the disease. Other effects

are a weakened immune system and inflammation to heart arteries.

What can we do to lessen effects of stress? According to Extension Program Specialist Julie Tijerina, “By

learning some simple techniques, we can learn to accept that stressors in our lives will exist, but how we choose to handle them, will help us lessen its effect on our bodies.”

Tijerina offers the following simple tips to help cope ce ra N. r with stress: Te ne • Avoid negative people or situations: If people, news, La social media, traffic, or other things cause you stress, try to avoid it. a more positive environment.

• To Do List: There will be times when the To Do list does not have to be completed. The room does not have to be cleaned today. Opt to take a walk outside, take deep breaths, or listen to the birds, even if it is only for a few minutes. Changing your mindset with something positive will help.

• Learn to listen to your body: Do you clench your jaw when stressed? Perhaps, your heart beats faster, or your thoughts are not focused. Take time to listen to your body, make a note of the things that affect you.

• Meditate: Learning how to quiet the mind and learning breathing exercises are two of the most popular methods to release stress.

• Exercise: Dancing, gardening, jogging, walking, or anything that helps you get into a different mindset helps relieve stress. Even 5 minutes of activity can help.

• Sleep: Create a sleep routine that allows for some down time before bed; no phones, caffeine, or other stimulants. During sleep, our bodies heal.

• Nutrition: Eating a healthy, well-balanced meal helps you think clearly and become alert. During times of stress, to boost mental health, eat plenty of fruits, dark green leafy vegetables, foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains, nuts, and legumes. Include, lean proteins

and reach for healthy snacks. Avoid processed foods.

Hopefully, covid has peaked out. When I started writing about vaccinations, we had lost 300,000 people then it began to climb.

600,000 was the number of deaths to match the Civil War. Then we went to 750,000 deaths. In 2021 we had more deaths than in 2020!

Now, we have passed 939,000 deaths and predicted to pass one million here in the USA. Worldwide there have been over 6 million deaths that have actually been recorded, so who really knows.

There is predicted to be a variant strain that will come this summer, approximately June. It is supposed to be mild. It took Spanish influenza 4 years to burn out, the only treatment was to stay away from crowds and America was mostly rural then anyway.

The first covid 19 variant was here September-October of 2019. President Trump stopped China from coming to the US on January 13, 2020. So, maybe by the end of this year, we can resume normal activities. Some think the virus will always be around.
