One of the center’s most stunning displays is a tower of connected water bottles. Lights flashing in different colors make the display appear “other worldly” and cause spectators to be surprised at its actual composition. Among the many educational and fun places to visit in Danville/Pittsylvania County is the Danville Science Center, located in the River District right next to the community market in the Crossing at the Dan. Executive Director Adam Goebel explains, “The Science Center has been one of the pillars of the Historic Tobacco District (now branded as the River District) since 1995. The campus has grown tremendously over the past 25+ years to include a seasonal Butterfly Station and Garden, the former SRAB building, 15,000 square feet of additional public exhibit space and Southern Virginia’s first and only digital dome theater. In addition to offering daily immersive videos in our Dome, it also has planetarium capabilities and offers live sky presentations daily as well.” 8 | DISCOVER M AGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

It is a satellite of the Science Museum of Virginia which provides oversight, funding and strategic direction. “Our core values are the same and guide the work we do day to day. However, we operate independently with a focus on being a regional destination location for STEM learning,” elaborates Goebel. The Science Center’s mission is to inspire visitors to enrich their lives through science. If guests are leaving asking more questions than they did when they arrive then the center has succeeded in its mission. Through recent renovations and new state of the art galleries and spaces, the Science Center prides itself on being multi-generational with activities, dome shows and exhibits for ages 0-99... and beyond.

The Danville Science Center is filled with many interactive displays such as the one pictured upper left that teach visitors various concepts of how science influences our lives. A great deal can be learned about the earth especially in the displays concerning water. The center is not just for kids but is designed to appeal to people of all ages.

It oﬀers monthly virtual science programs on social media platforms and on its Youtube channel. There are a variety of Standards of Learning correlated activities and experiences, as well as outreach options that schools, daycares and other organizations can choose from for a field trip. The center was impacted by the pandemic as were many other facilities. Goebel explains, “We were closed from March 13 through Nov. 20, 2020. This allowed our contractors to fast track many of the renovations and new gallery installations. We also launched a weekly Moments of Science digital program initiative to stay engaged with our members and guests during the closure. The new gallery concepts were created from feedback from the community, schools, members and guest focus groups and feedback sessions. These new experiences represent the community and the future of STEM in our region.” The entire Reimagine Project cost about $9.5 million and was funded by both public and private funding. Design and Production and Huettinger Interactive Exhibits built the breathtaking exhibits. The JT-Minnie Charitable Trust Creativity Lab oﬀers multiple programs daily designed to foster both creativity and problem solving through hands-on experimentation and exploration. The number of visitors ebb and flow from day to day and season to season throughout the year, but the average annual attendance pre-COVID was around 52,000 visitors in the fiscal year 2019. Goebel has been employed at DSC since 2001 right out of college. He started part-time as an outreach educator, became full-time in 2002, promoted to education coordinator in 2004 and was named the Executive Director in 2015. For those looking for a day trip or an overnight stay with plenty of outdoor amenities, there are four full-service state parks about an hour or so from most points in Danville and Pittsylvania County. Smith Mountain, Fairy Stone, Occoneechee and Staunton River state parks oﬀer a little something for every outdoor enthusiast, from hiking and boating to cabin rentals and equestrian facilities. Each park is located on a lake, allowing visitors and campers an array of water activities, depending on the park. All provide soothing views and a chance to relax by the water. Club keeps Danville running •

L.C. Moore was a self-described “flabby 173 pounds” and a two-pack a day smoker in the early 1980s. As a result, the then 30-year old got winded taking the two flights of stairs at Goodyear where he worked. Somehow running seemed to be the answer. After all, the sport had gained popularity in the 1970s with the creation of the city-wide marathons and books like the “Compete Runner” and the “Complete Book of Running.” His first attempt lasted four-tenths of a mile. But Moore kept at it. He kept running. He lost more than 30 pounds and stopped smoking. Before he knew it, Moore ran his first race, a 10K. Soon he was running marathons, including the esteemed

Boston Marathon. But something always seemed to go wrong at a race and it annoyed him. “I was the first one fussing,” said Moore. It was at a race in Danville that Moore met up with a city parks and recreation oﬃcial and the idea of a running club was born. It was 1987. The club got its start with 10 people meeting at Western Sizzlin’. The first race was the 5K “Danville Dash,” now the River City 5K. Today the Danville Running and Fitness Club is involved with more than 10 races a year and has about 100 members. And now that he’s put together races for more than 30 years, Moore is very aware of the complexities of such SOUTHSIDE | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | 15

an endeavor. “I quit complaining,” joked Moore, who has been president of the club every year, except one, since it started. Most of the races the club puts on, or assists with, are 5Ks, but there are also two half marathons — the Martinsville half marathon on April 2, and the River City 5K and Danville Half Marathon on Oct. 15. Another favorite is the Bridge-to-Bridge 5K and 10K and 20, 40, 60-mile bicycle races. This year it will be held April 9. Anywhere from 70 to 250 people enter the races, with the Bridge-to-Bridge drawing the largest crowd, said Moore. Moore said the races also include a walking portion to give everyone a chance to participate. The races require a cadre of volunteers to find sponsors, mark the course, arrange for trophies and T-shirts, oversee the timing, man water stops and more, said Moore. One of the races on the schedule is the Gretna 5K, which is sponsored by Revitalization for a Greater Gretna. The race, which will be held on May 7, starts and ends at Gretna Elementary School. The event also includes a onemile fun run for kids. Organizer Lou Harris said this is the 14th year for the race and it’s traditionally held on Mother’s Day weekend. race is a fundraiser for the organization, which has been instrumental in building the town’s walking trail, adding signage and sponsoring a mural in the town, said Harris. “We’re very proud of that accomplishment,” said Harris of the 1.6 mile walking trail. The race includes a $100 prize for a man or woman who breaks the course record for their respective gender. The male course record is 16:58 and for the women its 19:29, said Harris. Those wanting to be a member of the Danville Running and Fitness Club can do so by paying dues — $5 for high school students, $8 for adults and $12 for a family. Members can participate in the club championship races where points are accumulated and awards are given at the end of the year. “It encourages people to run all the races,” said Moore. Meanwhile, Moore, now 74, still runs, but his mileage has decreased over the years as the aches and pains of getting older set in. Moore’s wife, Bernice, walks the same route to keep him motivated. As to why he continues to run, Moore said, “I don’t know, crazy I guess. I’ve been doing it so long it’s second nature.” To learn more, or to sign up for a race, visit danvillerunner.org. •

Diana Schwartz unveils the announcement that Danville has been named a semi-finalist for the Great American Main Street Award.

The River District Association (RDA) is pleased to announce that Danville is one of eight communities selected as a semifinalist for the Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA). The award, given out by the National Main Street Center, recognizes communities for excellence in preservation-based commercial district revitalization. RDA Executive Director Diana Schwartz says, “We are very grateful for the team at the National Main Street Center for recognizing the hard work that has been done in the River District for the past decade.” Semi-finalists are selected from a nationwide pool of applicants by a jury of Main Street professionals and leaders in the fields of community and economic development and historic preservation. Criteria for winning include strength of the Main Street program in spurring community transformation, commitment to historic preservation, innovative programming, implementation of cross-sector partnerships, community outreach and stakeholder engagement and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. 18 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

She and her staff are gearing up for the Spring Preview on February 5 when they reduce all remaining winter clothing to half price. Josey opened Kids Stuff in 1993, an upscale consignment boutique offering children’s clothing, maternity wear, baby equipment and toys. In 2002, she expanded and opened Your Stuff, offering upscale ladies, men’s and teen wear next door to the kids location. Voted the best consignment shop in Danville, she is celebrating almost 29 years in business. “Now we also have Home Stuff to meet local demand for small furnishings and home décor,” she states. Josey brought a wealth of sales knowledge and experience with her after managing the shoe department at Frances Kahn’s downtown for ten years. Kahn’s was an upscale clothing store similar to Rippes. As a member of the National Association of Resale Professionals (NARTS) since 1997, the store’s website www. yourstuffkidsstuff.comhas been a “Featured Store of the Month” on the national directory of the association’s website www.narts.org. Josey attends the annual conferences and enjoys being involved in the professional organization. She has served as a speaker for multiple conferences all over the country. ahead of the curve. I always know the latest trends and tips for the industry. This helps both the store and our consignors to make more money.” If you’ve never been in a consignment store before and expect it to be like a thrift store, you’re in for a surprise. Josey says there is a big difference between the two. “Consignment stores are more selective in their offerings and can be almost indistinguishable from a fine boutique, offering only the latest styles and best quality of secondhand items. Far from the flea market feel of many thrift stores, consignment stores are the “Resale Royalty” of secondhand goods, offering designer brands and luxury goods for a fraction of their original cost.” There is more than one way to get paid for your items. Some consignors at Your Stuff take advantage of the option of picking up their money for items sold as often as they like. “Some people come every day for lunch money and some wait until the end of the year and use us as their Christmas Club,” says Josey. If you want to see tractors pull a huge weighted sled, ODAC has your remedy. ODAC hosted the 2nd annual Southern Virginia Winter Classic antique tractor pull competition March 3-5. In the world of tractor pulls, an antique tractor has to be the production year 1959 or older. Board member Zach Agee explains why people come for a tractor pull event. “Many of these people grew up driving these tractors,” he says. “People have hobbies that they enjoy and come out and spend time with their extended family. It’s a time everyone comes to know each other, hang out and be part of that enjoyment. Josh Blackburn from Michigan is one of those. His family started pulling tractors back in 1995. “We were always buying parts from people and they’re always wrong. That’s when I started getting into the engine business,” he said. Being an engine person, they often worry about part failure but Blackburn explains it’s where you get them that count. “You’re always taking the chance of a breakdown, but parts are pretty reliable if you treat them right. The thing is getting quality parts. The pulling community is widespread but people are tight knit. If people are unhappy or they get faulty parts, they’ll go on social media and others will do the

same, so you can weed out the crooks from the good guys.” Blackburn says some people can have as much as a couple grand to 30 grand put into their tractor. “It’s kind of like drag racing, and you sink as much money as you want. There’s always room for improvement or whatever you want to do,” Agee says. No matter how much money someone spends on their tractor, the objective is the same, take a tractor and see how far you can pull a sled while it simultaneously moves its weight from the rear to the front. “The sled has a box that has weight,” Agee explains. “The further you go, the further the box goes up to stop you.” Agee says a big sled can weight between 30,000 and 40,000 pounds. Blackburn says the perfect pull is based on a lot of things including the right tires for the track, the correct tire pressure, balance has to be perfect, the right amount of power and driver ability can’t be overlooked either. Blackburn also has a statement for someone who hasn’t been to or participated in a pull before but wants to. “If you were born into the industry, you have a connection with it. The people you meet are unbelievable. Danville has a lot of ways to get around if you don’t have a car. You can take public transportation with the local bus stations and Danville’s Transit System. However, there are a couple other ways. If you don’t fancy getting on a bus, but still need something quick to get a hold of and don’t want to spend a fortune, no problem. Look around town and you might notice mobile scooters provided by Bird. Founded in 2017, Bird is a micromobility company out of California, and it recently partnered with the city of Danville, to offer 50 scooters as an alternative way to get around the city. To use a Bird scooter, all you need is your phone and the Bird app. Open the app to find the closest scooter, scan the QR code and you are good to go. When you’re finished, park it in a designated parking area or in a safe spot away from traffic. Bird’s website describes why their scooters are desirable in an urban setting, “Bird eliminates the need to endlessly search for car parking, which causes traffic on already crowded streets. One traditional car parking spot can fit ten scooters, and Bird re-imagines these spaces as multi-purpose parklets where dockless bikes and scooters can easily park.” You will be charged 10 to 35 cents per minute the scooter is in your possession and one dollar to unlock. However, if you feel more comfortable with riding a bike, Danville has bike rentals available near the Danville Science Center. Through the Movatic app, you can rent a bike for $3 per hour. Either way, whether you are a scooter, bike or car person, Danville has plenty of options to make getting around as efficiently as possible. • 22 | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | SOUTHSIDE

Charles also said over the years, the number one biggest seller is called “strawberry crunch cake,” and the staple of the business is called “lemon delight” as it was the first cake Mary made. “I think Ma’s Cakes brand itself has a unique taste,” Charles said. “It’s a little something for everybody. We were called the Baskin Robbins of cake because we have so many diﬀerent flavors.” Mary commented her favorite ingredient to use would be pineapple since it is her favorite fruit. She has done pineapple cakes, cupcakes, pineapple upside down cakes and many more things with pineapple. Charles would explain how the brick and mortar came to be. “We own this property. The business outgrew our home, so we decided to make an investment to expand to accommodate our family.” Mary said since she already was doing events, Charles decided to get her a food truck to expand delivering cakes and going to diﬀerent events. They ran that truck for about four years until opening the store. Charles commented they plan to have a pop up express

Ma’s Cakes in Martinsville sometime in the future but have not announced an opening yet. Charles explains the term “family” is referring to everyone associated with the business and its customers. “My wife is aﬀectionately known as Ma. People today like to call her the city’s mom. She’s a warm, loving lady that everyone connects with.” Mary explained how the nickname of “Ma” came to be. “It just kind of happened,” she began. “A long time ago, people just started calling me Ma. Always been kind of a motherly type person.” She told one story where she met an older lady old enough to be her mother, and because she was trying to get this woman to eat right, she started calling Mary “Ma.” Charles gave some insight what the grand opening was like. They cut the ribbon Feb. 26. “Amazing,” he said. “As we gathered for the ribbon cutting, by 10 a.m., there were 125-150 people already gathering. Those people walled with us in the door and the line stayed for the entire time. Over 500 people walked through here.” During the opening, Danville mayor Alonzo Jones said Ma’s Cakes completed the River District Association Stream Launch Boot Camp and entered the Dream Launch Pitch SOUTHSIDE | DISCOVER MAGAZINE | 25
