his month, guest writer Beth Massa shares with us the story of homes in Cherokee Village that were inspired by designs by Frank Lloyd Wright. I visited with Kristin Newman, owner of The Farmer’s Daughter, about her unique store that features many local handmade products. Debbie Moore’s story and beautiful pictures inspire exploring the Ozarks for a stay-cation. Elaine’s featured story this month honors Fredamae Gamblin, a well-known Hardy woman, who was very active in the community.

Gardening in the Ozarks The Redbuds Are Coming… As nature slowly wakes up from her winter nap, there are so many bursts of color all around. The “Bulbs are Bulbing”. The Iris’s have begun to sing “When Iris Eyes Are Smiling”. How beautiful and cool are these mixes of colors. But wait. What is that pretty tree in the forest that John Norberg are blooming now? It is the one Sharp County and only famous Redbud Tree. Master Gardener I just love these beautiful trees, for their compact height and their branching habits. They are one of the earliest trees to begin blooming in the spring. To see their naked branches filled with sweet-pea shaped blossoms, lets you know, spring has finally arrived. The Redbud is not picky about the soil type it grows in. When planting, choose a place that is moist yet
well-draining. Because of its size, this tree works well in a part to full shade area or as an understory tree. It is also best to plant it in the spring. This way, you can maintain the water it needs during the summer, to help establish its roots. Redbuds are hardy in zones 4-8. Here in the Ozarks, we are a zone 7a. The Redbud will grow to about 20-30 feet tall with 15-20 feet wide. This makes it perfect for that focal point in your yard. Not really sure why it is called a Redbud, as the flowers are purple-pink in color. The flowers will emerge on the bare branches before leaves begin. They are prolific and close to the branches. On a side note: a friend makes Redbud jelly out of the flowers, and let me tell you, it is DELICIOUS. This tree has a moderate growth habit. When planted as a sapling, once established, can grow to 10 feet in 5-6 years. The trunk, as a rule, will divide close to the ground, giving it an interesting look to its overall

structure. Another fun fact about this tree is, the leaves emerge as a reddish color and turn dark green in the summer. Then come fall, they will turn a bright yellow. So, this little beauty will give you almost continuous color interest. Also, their leaves are heart-shaped and about 5-6 inches in size. Another good reason to plant a Redbud is that it is a favorite for our pollinators. Their blooms will appear in early spring before and last for two to three weeks. This gives the pollinators a good head start on a food supply. There are several types of Redbuds. The Eastern Redbud is the most common. Two varieties that I have found to be Amazing are “Forest Pansy” and “Lavender Twist”. Forest Pansy will be more compact with a Huge amount of flowers clustered up and down the branches. Lavender Twist is a weeping variety and will give a “flowing” look to this tree. So now as you drive down the road and see a purple-pink tree blooming in the woods, you will catch yourself saying, “The Redbuds are coming”.

Hidden Gems: Local houses inspired by acclaimed architect

As you’re driving up the hill on Cherokee Road behind Town Center in Cherokee Village, you may notice the rather seemingly nondescript, red-brick, condos down the bluff to the right and think, “hmmm, that’s interesting.” But, you keep driving and really never give it a second thought. What you may not realize is those nondescript, red-brick condos were designed by one of the greatest American architects of the late 20th

century. In 1954, Fay Jones was on the faculty of the University of Arkansas, School of Architecture. That same year, John Cooper founded the Cherokee Village Development Company, which set in motion America’s retirement community industry boom. The year prior to his faculty appointment at U of A, Jones was invited to participate in the acclaimed
architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s workshop at his estate in Taliesin, Wis. As a result of this invitation, Wright became Jones’ life-long friend and mentor. In 1955, Jones designed and built his own home near Fayetteville and soon after, was commissioned to design homes for a number of U of A faculty members. His unique, organic, design esthetic started gaining popularity and in the three decades that followed, Jones designed homes for people in Arkansas and surrounding states. While Jones was busy designing private homes, Cooper was developing three master-planned communities in Arkansas: Cherokee Village, Bella Vista Village, and Hot Springs Village. These communities established Arkansas as a popular retirement destination. During this period, Cooper established a connection with the University of Arkansas, School of Architecture, and commissioned Jones to design the Cherokee Village Town Center, which was built in 1965, before Cooper’s company was reorganized into Cooper Communities. The condos were originally commissioned for Bella Vista Village in Northwest Arkansas, but those designs were eventually used for the Cherokee Village Condos on Lotus Lane; the seemingly nondescript, red-brick ones behind Town Center. steel skyscrapers, Jones preferred to design private homes that exuded the organic feel he so loved. He was content and happy with his successful practice in Fayetteville until Jim Reed, a native of Pine Bluff, purchased land near Eureka Springs in 1971 to build a retirement home. Reed, thinking the site was too beautiful on which to build a house, commissioned Jones to design Thorncrown Chapel, his most iconic structure, which was completed in 1980. Even though Jones was well-known and highly respected in the architecture world, this design catapulted him to fame. Thorncrown Chapel was awarded the American Institute of Architects Design of the Year Award in 1981 and the AIA has listed it fourth among the top buildings of the twentieth century. In 1990, Jones was awarded a gold medal by the AIA, the highest award an architect can receive. To this date, he is the only student of Frank Lloyd Wright to receive this honor. unique design influence, namely in the vertical board and batten siding seen on so many homes and structures. For Jones, Cherokee Village was the perfect backdrop for his style and concepts. He respected the beauty of nature and was always careful to work with it rather than overwhelm it.
So, the next time you drive by those seemingly nondescript, red-brick condos, take a glance at them. You’ll notice how unique and beautiful they really are and you’ll understand what an honor and privilege it is to have these hidden gems in our wonderful community. Frank Lloyd Wright house

The Farmer’s Daughter; providing products from local farms and small businesses

Located on Front Street in Thayer is a unique store that focuses on featuring local handmade high-quality goods. Homey and rustic, The Farmer’s Daughter offers an array of products and helps to support small businesses. “The Farmer’s Daughter focuses on local handmade high-quality goods. I try to support local farmers to the best of my ability and if not, there are items here that are made from small producers. So, even if I get them from Oregon or North Carolina, it is a small family business. I try to support the small businesses as much as possible,” said owner Kristin Newman. When asked what inspired the business, owner Kristin Newman said, “It did not start out this way.” Newman and her husband, David, own Newman Farm Berkshire Pork in Myrtle, and during the COVID-19 pandemic they went from a 90 percent wholesale business for restaurants to zero. “There were a couple of days, David and I looked at each other and we were like what are we going to do because our animals are still growing,” said Newman. However, thanks to be being blessed with an opportunity to acquire a walk-in freezer, a freezer truck and an online website the Newman’s were able to pivot their business to an online marketplace and sell to individuals. This resulted in expanding to shipping nationwide thanks to their website, NewmanFarm.com. “This building started out as a rental space to put our distribution

center for our mail order business,” said Newman, stating they hesitated on renting the space due to Myrtle being 16 miles from the facility. However, this addition has proven to have its advantages. Newman stated it has had a positive impact for their long-time customers as they do not have to drive 16 miles for their pork products. Starting with just a large freezer chest and a small freezer chest, the business has grown to feature a variety of products. “I personally love shopping at stores like this. So, I try to make it a store that I would want to shop at and supporting local is so important…small business is tough. There is a lot that goes into it. It is very difficult, but it is the most rewarding thing that I have every done and I thoroughly enjoy it. It has been a really great experience being able to visit with my vendors, talk to them and give them another outlet for their product that they might not necessarily have,” said Newman, stating she feels like the community enjoys it as well. In addition, Newman likes to feature food items that cannot be found anywhere else. Many groceries available at The Farmer’s Daughter are from Azure Standard, which features products that do not contain artificial colors, preservatives and highly refined sugars. For instance, the store’s gluten-free items are from there. If possible, Newman likes to know the producer of the products although some she does not have a direct relationship with.
One company in North Carolina she does have direct contact with is a husband-and-wife team that also includes their adult children that makes the hard candies, peanut brittle, and candied nuts sold in the store. “The equipment they use to make their candies with was originally used in a candy company called Ozark Mountain Candy Company in Springfield in 1910. Through the years, it was bought and sold, but that is where it originated from…That is kind of a cool full circle,” said Newman. When determining what toys to feature in the store, Newman’s children, nine- and six-year-old Cody and Ava, have been great at assisting in what to sale. “When I buy toys to put in the store, I know I have hit the ball right when they come in and want to buy it,” said Newman, stating the children use their own money to buy toys from the store. The store has also proven to be beneficial in teaching Newman’s children to be entrepreneurs, with Cody purchasing a little refrigerator and sodas to sell and Ava providing the marketing by creating signs. Newman stated it was something great to be able to pass onto their kids, learning about wholesale, retail and patiently waiting until one has the funds to buy something. In addition, Newman’s niece, who she described as being “an incredible seamstress,” also has items featured at the store such as aprons she made. Inspiration for the name, The Farmer’s Daughter, not to be confused with a business in West Plains, came from her father, David Propst, who passed away in 2020.

“He taught me everything I know about agriculture and is where I got the foundation of my passion for agriculture. My husband and I are raising our kids with that same passion, knowing where your food comes from and how important it is. There are certain traits and characteristics in a farming family that you can only get from there, taking care of the land, taking pride in what you produce, putting your animals first and always making sure they are taken care of. My dad always said, ‘If you take care of something, it will last forever’ and that is something he really instilled in us. I don’t spend my time on the farm day to day work, but I know about it. I am passionate about it. I am excited about it. So, The Farmer’s Daughter is kind of my way of honoring him and the lifestyle that he gave to me as well as my sister in laws, who’s dad, Mark Newman, passed away in 2014. They had that same work ethic and that same passion about where their food comes from. There are a lot of us. There are a lot of farmer’s daughters out there,” said Newman. A nostalgic touch of decoration in the store features a bit of Newman Farm Heritage Berkshire Pork history, two green boards that were used originally by Mark and Rita Newman when they would take their pork products to the Memphis Farmers Market. Not only do these board have sentimental value, they also inspired the pig logo that Newman Farm uses

The Farmer’s Daughter has many exciting things coming up this summer. This includes extending the hours and being open the first Saturday of every month. During which, Newman would like to hold a class of some sort. She recently held a painting class and she and her mother-in-law, Rita Newman-Culton, held a cooking demonstration. What’s Cookin’ in the Ozarks? Strawberry and Feta Salad By Linda Welch 1 cup slivered almonds 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon honey 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 cup raspberry vinegar 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 1 head romaine lettuce, torn 1 pint fresh strawberries, sliced 1 cup crumbled feta cheese In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the almonds until lightly toasted. Remove from heat, and set aside. In a bowl, whisk garlic, honey, Dijon mustard, raspberry vinegar, balsamic vinegar, brown sugar and vegetable oil. In a large bowl put together lettuce, almonds, strawberries and feta cheese. Add dressing and toss to serve. *Note: If you can’t find raspberry vinegar, use raspberry vinaigrette and reduce vegetable oil to 3/4 cup.

Sometimes we take for granted the beauty that lies in our own backyard. With the rising gas prices, I have heard many people say; Well, we had a vacation planned for this place or that place, but we may have to rethink this if gas is $5 a gallon. I understand that completely. I’m in that same boat! During this time of stretched budgets maybe we don’t need to put those vacations on hold! Maybe we should take some time and enjoy the beauty in our own backyards. A Stay-cation might just be the ticket! The Ozarks have something for just about everyone! With the mountain views, lakes and rivers it is an outdoor lover’s para-
dise. If the great outdoors isn’t your thing, don’t worry. This area has some amazing things to offer you too. Dotted all through the Ozarks are some very charming small towns that offer some unique little shops and restaurants that you just can’t find anywhere else. Spring is one of my very favorite times of the year. The Dogwoods and redbud trees will be blooming along with wildflowers and new green foliage will adorn the hillsides. The old saying; April showers bring May flowers is true, but it also brings something else to our area. April showers also makes the waterfalls of the Ozark Mountains spectacular!

A few of my favorite and not real hard to get to are: Falling Water Falls, Horsetail Falls, Intersection Falls, Six Finger Falls and Fuzzybutt Falls. These are located off Falling Water Road near Ben Hur, Ark. Falling Water and Six Finger Falls are right by the road. The rest require a little hiking. Triple Falls located near the old Camp Orr Boy Scout Camp located between Jasper and Ponca is another easy, short hike, but sometimes the road to get there can be a bit rough. Broadwater Hollow Falls and Paige Falls are also short hikes located near Compton, but again the road to get there can be rough. After a big spring rain, the waterfalls on highway 341 between Big Flat and Norfork are just amazing. These would be Dewy Canyon Falls, Bumpers Falls, and Heuston Falls. The book, “Arkansas Waterfalls,” by Tim Ernst is a great resource if you are interested in hiking to more beautiful waterfalls in our state. Fall, winter and spring are my favorite times to hike. There are so many great trails. Really too many to list. Notice I left out summer! Summer is the time to get out the kayaks, canoes, or tubes and enjoy floating our many rivers. Many times I am asked about a good trail for smaller kids. One of my picks for small kids would be Alum Cove located near Deer, Ark. It’s a 1.2 mile round trip loop with a natural bridge, creek, small waterfall and a rock/cave area kids would love. The trailhead has a very nice picnic area. I love to travel, but I am always ready to come home to my beautiful Ozarks. We live in one of the most beautiful

places in the world! When I’m not traveling, I can usually be found hiking some of our local trails in Arkansas and Southern Missouri, and always with a camera in my hand. It really is a kind of therapy for me of the very best kind. There is no better place to clear your head and unplug from the world for a bit. You don’t really have a choice on the unplugged part! Most of the time you won’t have cell service!

ACNA’s April Artist of the Month: Diana Long By Cheri Lynn Quattrochi The Arts Center of North Arkansas’s April Artist of the Month is painter/drawer Diana Long, ACNA’s 2022 secretary. She creates primarily two-dimensional artworks, usually painting in watercolor and acrylic, and drawings of graphite, pastels, and colored pencils. While gravitating back to these forms, she is always open to learning about and experimenting with new techniques, styles and
media. After a 20-year banking career, Diana sought to make art not just a hobby but her life’s work. In 2003, she began drawing and painting professionally after receiving her BSE in Art Education from ASU at age 40. Teaching art to others was a lifelong dream, and she was blessed to teach public-school art for 15 years. She often drew pencil portraits for teachers and friends. She also taught many adult art and photography workshops at ASU, BRTC (Black River Technical College) and the NEA Coop. Since that time, she has enjoyed creating many commissioned drawings and paintings. She has painted a few murals and had several exhibitions in Paragould. In 2009, she accepted a commission job to draw 42 Arkansas Baptists churches in graphite. The architectural pencil drawings are a permanent exhibit that can be seen in the halls of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention Center in Little Rock, Ark. Diana was born in Wisconsin but lived most of her life in the Missouri boot heel. After high school, she was fortunate to travel the world as a military dependent. She lived three years in Japan and two years in The Netherlands. While living in Europe, she was privileged to visit many famous art museums such as the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Louvre in Paris. In 1994, Diana settled in Paragould with her two children, and in

1996 she married Jeff Long. In 2018, they retired and began full-time RVing through the Western states, migrating to Florida for the winter. Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat during her travels inspired Diana to paint them. They moved to Cherokee Village in 2019 to enjoy “lake life” and be closer to family. The move has given her the opportunity to become part of a wonderful community and the ACNA. She has dedicated her time fully to creating art now, especially in watercolor.
Diana’s current work reflects the beauty of animals and nature. Rather than photographic replicas, she amplifies their beauty by presenting them with an inspired artistic flair. She uses vibrant colors and mesmerizing textures in watercolor on paper and on canvas. She enjoys watching how the colors bleed and blend, the diverse moving and flowing, and the unique textural results using salt, alcohol, and blotting. Painting watercolor on canvas involves first adding a watercolor ground to the canvas. That then acts like paper to withstand the watercolor paint. This process pushes Diana to be looser and more playful in her work and encourages her to paint more. As Diana states it, “I want to represent wildlife in a magical, exuberant way by using intense colors, hard and soft edges, and lots of fun textures. My desire is for you to see ‘the beauty of nature’ through my art. Fredamae Gamblin: The Ozark community will miss, but never lose the spirit of this unforgettable angel By Elaine Brown Photos Submitted
Fredamae Gamblin, born Fredamae Viola Holden on Feb. 18, 1937, was a woman whose life commanded respect with dignity, grace and charm. Gamblin had smarts, style and a sometimes wicked sense of humor. Miss Freda, as she was known by many in her circle in Hardy, Ark., was full of surprises and kept people around her on their toes. She was smart as a whip and could make anyone chuckle with a wink and a smile. Gamblin passed on Feb. 9, 2022, a little more than one week before her 85th birthday. As was written by her niece Misty Casey, “She leaves behind all the politicians that she liked to argue with, many friends and family, some of whom she may have ticked off a time or two. Fredamae was involved in 1,000 clubs and left every one of them because ‘they didn’t know what they were doing.’” Casey used the adjective “feisty” when describing Gamblin, a definite term of endearment that seems to have stuck with her family’s legacy. Freda Holden Gamblin was always involved in activities in whatever community she resided, which ranged between Arkansas, Virginia and Louisiana, but her hometown of Hardy was always where her heart lied. Gamblin had many hobbies, including crocheting, embroidery and painting. She also loved spending time with friends and family, and of course her cats. She enjoyed making birdhouses as gifts for different people, painting and decorating each one, personalizing it for the particular individual she was creating it for. At Gamblin’s memorial service, her nephew-in-law, Ty Casey, told the story of how she created one specifically for him, and customized it with a Texas license plate covering the roof of the birdhouse. When Casey asked her why she put a Texas plate on it, she asked him, “Ty, you’re a big Arkansas Razorbacks’ fan?” He responded, “Yes, Ma’am, I love the hogs.” “You hate Texas?” Gamblin questioned. Casey responded with a “Yep.” Gamblin said, “That’s why you have it.” 34 AVENUES • April, 2022
Casey said she’d often call the house and get him stirred up talking politics, and just when he would be riled up enough, she’d hang up. When he would try to call her back, she wouldn’t answer. Apparently Gamblin knew when a conversation was over. “She was one of a kind,” said Casey. Misty Casey spoke at the service, “My Aunt Freda was a
special one. She’d be a little snarky toward you, depending on if you were a Republican or Democrat. But we won’t get into politics, as much as she would love for us to get started on that.” Casey continued, “I will say that anything she did, she put her heart and soul into it…She definitely would let her opinions be known, and pretty much thought she was right about everything. That may or may not be a Holden trait, but we won’t talk about that either.” Casey shared a story from some time back about her aunt, when Gamblin had called her over because she wasn’t feeling well. They called an ambulance, the paramedics took her vitals and after talking with Gamblin, the decision was made it was not necessary to take her to the hospital. After the ambulance left, Gamblin was still frowning. Casey asked her what was wrong, to which Gamblin replied, “I’m not supposed to go out like this! I’m supposed to die while dancing on the table, drinking tequila!” Another friend at the service, Kerry Wayne Evans, shared his thoughts of Gamblin. “She’s one of the few women that I’ve ever known that you could have a knock-down dragout with her one day, and lunch with her the next.” Evan’s added, “That’s the best thing that I remember about her. She didn’t hold grudges.” One of Gamblin’s best friends over the last decade is Nimmi Desai, owner of the Village Inn where Fredamae would often go for coffee and to visit. Desai referred to her as the “Coffee Bandit,” or as she is now known, the “Java Angel.” She has fond memories of Gamblin’s rambunctious ideas for adventure, from swimming in the Spring River to taking off on a road trip to places Desai had never been to. “She was like a big kid…She was spunky, no doubt,” said Desai. Stories were shared by those gathered at the Spring River where Gamblin’s ashes were spread, as she had requested. Apparently, Fredamae was the woman around town, always speeding wherever she went. Desai remembered, “I’ll never forget the day when my sister passed away and I got the news. [Freda] was there within five minutes, I think she was speeding. No wait, she drove like that all the time,” with giggles of agreement from those nearby. “She wouldn’t let me go until she found someone to take me, because I had to drive four hours to get there,” continued Desai. “She took my keys, my handbag and everything and said ‘You’re not going.’” Gamblin was one to recognize and look after people in need, especially those she loved. When asked later about what made Gamblin so special, Desai said, “It was her spirit, she was game for anything.” Desai cherished their friendship as Fredamae was the first real friend she had when she first moved to Hardy. “She was my friend, she was my mentor…and she’s been my

inspiration.” As Lauren Siebert recalled one Halloween when she stopped by the Village Inn and Desai told her, “We’re going to do a pop-up haunted hotel!” The “we” here referred to Miss Freda, Desai and her staff. They decorated six rooms in about six hours, each with its own spooky theme, and the room assigned to Gamblin was “The Killer Nanny.” According to Siebert, “She was the show-stopper…[Gamblin] was in a room with all these baby dolls, like ‘dead babies’ laying around everywhere.” Gamblin was sitting in a rocking chair with purple hair, spider webs and dust all around, holding one of the “babies.” As Siebert laughingly described it, “[Gamblin] was patting the doll saying, ‘Oh, it’s OK, it’s OK…’ and you want to talk about freaking out!” Siebert added, “She was in character, she was committed.” Siebert and Desai agreed Gamblin was always committed to whatever she did. “She was a party full of life to be celebrated,” added Desai. Her service to the community was boundless. Gamblin served as commissioner and secretary for the Hardy Advertising and Promotions Commission (A&P) for several terms, and planned and drafted their Walking Tour map, among many other things. She was also known as the Hardy A&P “Street Walker” because she walked the

streets delivering directories, motorcycle guides and other information about Hardy. She was a big part of organizing and putting on events such as the Hardy Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Bash and Wilburn Brothers’ music events. She was the Hardy Christmas Parade Grand Marshall in 2017 and served on the Board of Directors for Main Street Hardy. In 2018, the Hardy Independence Celebration was her “brainchild.” Gamblin was the recipient of the 2013 E. As one friend put it, “She was involved in almost every event either as a volunteer, organizer or a citizen of the tri-county area,” over a span of three decades. She was fearless in the face of authority or on a daunting adventure. If you had the pleasure of knowing her, Fredamae Gamblin was a hoot, as simple as that. She always kept you guessing, but you could always count on her for the simplest and the most laborious tasks. Gamblin was challenging as a competitor, an inspiration as a leader and a delight as a friend. She will be deeply missed, but her soul and the love she spread throughout her life will continue to live on.

Spring Cleaning for the Fisherman By: Dewayne French One of the most common sayings around the Ozarks in the spring is “When the dogwoods are blooming the fish are biting” With that occurring and the warming of our lakes and rivers, the fish have started the yearly spawning routine and the fishing activity has really taking off. Boats and trailers are coming and going to the local fishing holes along with kayaks, Jon boats, and canoes. Spring time usually kicks the cabin fever out and puts the fishing fever in our souls. Weather it is a fish fry you want to have or just dust off the rod & reel and take out the boat for the first time. You have to do spring cleaning of your tackle also. Weekends are when most people are able to get out and fish around here. Spring fishing baits should include; crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, Texas rigged lizards, and even a floating worm. The spinnerbait seems to be the best lure for “covering water” while trying to locate shallow fish and when we have some wind thats even better. After you find where the fish are located at, then you can slow down with the lizard or other plastic lure to fine tune your success. The spinnerbait works great in the windy areas of our lakes and rivers and allows us, as anglers to move from potential “fishing hot spot to hot spot” faster. When fish are biting the spinner bait they are usually reacting to it. Sometimes when the fish are just “bumping” the bait, not really eating it, you need to toss back into that area with a Senko type bait to catch those fish.
cleaning takes on a whole new meaning to the fisherman. We need to put new fishing line on reels, replace old rusty treble hooks on crankbaits and oil our fishing reels. Take out the winter lures and restock your boxes with spring lures. As you clean stuff out your boat boxes always check your batteries and make sure they are fresh and ready for the spring fishing fever. Remember, we all “Live Downstream” so please pick up your trash and any other trash you see out floating around! Never discard old fishing lines in the river or lake! Wear your life jacket, and tell your family your expected return times, and a general location of where you plan to fish.
