One of the reasons the Lexus RX is the most successful luxury crossover on the market is that we’ve never stopped improving it. It has evolved like never before with provocative lines, advanced technologies like available Tra c Jam Assist,* and the RX500h that ups the ante on RX performance. Discover a whole new world of possibility in the Lexus RX.
From big builds to high-end renovations, the Bay area has never looked better. Full of fascinating resources and incredibly talented individuals, we scooped up the best around for an inside peek. As most design enthusiasts know, getting a space just right is a labor of love and requires a long list of professionals. Interviewing local insiders certainly revealed the dedication that goes into achieving the looks we love and the Access team enjoyed various trips ranging from a beautiful beach retreat to the spectacular grounds of Charles Phillips. Experiencing firsthand the true treasures and legacies that abound in our own backyard was so rewarding. Interestingly, character is the common thread between these gifted individuals. And, I think you'll agree. Luckily, I was able to get away with a few girl friends this summer and we found a sea of home and fashion inspiration that our columnist, Charlotte Kilborn Carey, mapped out and tied up with a pretty bow in her special story. The trip was not only fun, it served as an important reminder that getting out of our busy-lives-bubble is crucial on all fronts. Currently moving all three of my children to college, I know what a hectic life looks like and I look forward to reimagining my space, too! Enjoy the read!

Mobile and the entire Bay area has something special to celebrate with the opening of Clotilda: The Exhibition at Africatown Heritage House. Home to this incredible exhibition, Africatown Heritage House is a community space for sharing the long-untold story of the nation’s last known slave ship, the Clotilda, and the community that was created by the vessel’s survivors and their descendants. The exhibition occupies about 2,500 square feet of rich, multisensory space, dense with compelling stories and images.
Pieces of the sunken ship scientifically verified to be the Clotilda from 1860 have been recovered from the site of the wreck and are on view in the exhibition, on loan from the Alabama Historical Commission. The exhibition has been curated, developed, and designed by the History Museum of Mobile, in conjunction with the local community and the wider descendant community, and in consultation with experts
around the country. The many stories are shared through a combination of interpretive text panels, documents, and artifacts. “Artifacts make the past proximate, bringing visitors face to face with history. As visitors learn the stories of the 110 men, women, and children aboard the Clotilda, we hope there’s a sense that the past is very much present,” said Dr. Meg McCrummen Fowler, Director of the History Museum of Mobile.
Woven into the larger story, visitors can see and hear many primary-source reports and stories of individuals: their histories, their families, their resilient spirit. Inside the exhibition, they can follow a step-by-step chronology from the story’s West African origins through the founding and development of Africatown. Toward the end of the exhibition, visitors emerge into a space that looks toward the future of Africatown and invites visitors to respond to what they have seen.
Both an educational and moving experience, visitors leave with the challenge to learn more and to become advocates for the community.

“The responses from visitors are a testament as to why this exhibition was necessary. People are often moved to tears after touring the exhibit. There’s a shift that happens when people exit the Africatown Heritage House. It’s my hope that their transformation sparks interest in their own history and more support for the Africatown community.”

In the heart of Alabama, lies a hidden gem that captivates antique enthusiasts and history lovers alike. Welcome to Charles Phillips Antiques, a family business that has not only stood the test of time but has also become a cherished part of the community.
The story of Charles Phillips Antiques begins with the passion and drive of its founder, Charles Phillips. From a young age, Charles developed an affinity for antique coins, sparking a lifelong interest in historical artifacts. At just seven years old, he started buying and selling these antique treasures, and by the age of sixteen, he had ventured into the antique business with his mother.
After college, Charles returned to his hometown along with his wife, Sue, to open their business. Over the years, the business has evolved, adapting to changes in sources, economy, and trends. Interestingly, all six of Charles and Sue’s children have been involved in the business at various stages of their lives, including their daughter, Audrey Phillips Lapeyrouse.
As you venture onto the property of Charles Phillips Antiques, you’re stepping into a place like no other. The setting, spread across 60 acres, exudes a homey charm, with long oak-lined gravel driveway. Despite its ever-changing nature, visitors find themselves immersed in a thrilling atmosphere. “My grandparents bought the 60 acres of land over 60 years ago. You drive past our family homes on your way to the warehouses. Back in the day you would see my grandfather out bush hogging or working on some various project,” Audrey fondly recalls.
“MY GRANDPARENTS BOUGHT THE 60 ACRES OF LAND OVER 60 YEARS AGO. YOU DRIVE PAST OUR FAMILY HOMES ON YOUR WAY TO THE WAREHOUSES. BACK IN THE DAY YOU WOULD SEE MY GRANDFATHER OUT BUSH HOGGING OR WORKING ON SOME VARIOUS PROJECT.”
With eight expansive warehouses, visitors can easily lose themselves in the mesmerizing array of antiques. Yet, within this seemingly vast expanse, the warmth of the staff makes everyone feel like a part of the family. “No matter what, you can still find someone to help you. Granted, that help might come from a long time customer who is also shopping!”
What sets Charles Phillips Antiques apart is its exceptional offerings sourced from over 40 different countries worldwide. Charles personally curates each piece, with a focus on Eastern Europe, former English colonies, and regions in the top of Africa. The business boasts an extensive collection of architectural antiques, antique furniture, and smaller items. Moreover, they have a range of unique pieces designed and crafted onsite.
As word spread about their unique offerings, the business began attracting decorators, dealers, and customers from near and far. The visibility on HGTV shows further catapulted their success, attracting visitors from across the country, eager to uncover hidden gems. “It’s been fun and helpful with spreading our customer base. We now see people flying in from around the country to shop,” Audrey tells us.
And, in recent times, the demand for antique doors has surged, coinciding with an increase in building and renovation projects. The charm and character that antique doors add to modern designs have made them a popular choice among customers. Additionally, their custom-made tables, consoles, and antique chests of drawers remain evergreen favorites.
For Audrey, her love of the antiques business has been steadfast throughout her life. And, her role in the family’s business has been ever changing. From painting/refinishing the furniture, to now mainly working with dealers and decorators with bulk buying and running the social media, Audrey’s day is never boring. When asked what a typical day looks like for her, Audrey says, “I first check all platform messages/comments, weigh which ones are urgent to answer, post photos, send out invoices, and annoy our manager, Jerry, with questions,” she laughs. “Most mornings I go to the shop for a few hours and pick out which pieces to feature. This involves chatting with my dad about what’s arriving and brainstorming new ideas to build our brand and image online with my mom.”
Over the years, the business has witnessed its share of challenges, from economic fluctuations to the unprecedented events of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the spirit of entrepreneurship and adaptability has allowed Charles Phillips Antiques to thrive. In the wake of Covid-19, with Audrey’s valuable contributions and a strong online presence, the business found a new way to reach customers and cater to their needs during difficult times.
And, the future looks exceptionally promising for Charles Phillips Antiques. Audrey envisions a continuing journey of growth and expansion. With 17 grandchildren and more to come, the next generation seems ready to take on the mantle and continue the family legacy.
Being a part of a family business brings a special sense of fulfillment to Audrey, and the family’s bond extends to Audrey’s husband, Ludger Lapeyrouse, who shares her love for history and antique gadgets. Visits to the store led to their romance, and now, as parents, they
delight in seeing their children, Ludger (3) and Hunter (almost 2), revel in the wonders of the business. “They call my dad ‘Bop’ and they love running around the buildings. It reminds me of my childhood down there with my sisters. It’s fun to see the next generation running around,” Audrey shares.
Beyond work, Audrey’s life revolves around her family and her passions. She enjoys creating delicious meals for her loved ones and cherishing quality family time. Long walks and reading serve as her escapes, recharging her spirit amidst the bustling joy of family life.
The journey of Charles Phillips Antiques is a testament to the power of passion, family, and resilience. As the business continues to thrive, it leaves an indelible mark on all who wander through its doors, preserving the beauty of history for generations to come.
With her legendary red locks and personable demeanor, Cindy Meador of Cindy Meador Interiors has been a go-to interior designer for 30 years. Residing in Fairhope and owning and operating a stunning two-story shop and design studio on Canal Road in Orange Beach, Cindy is in her prime. Here she shares a project that demonstrates just how vital an interior designer can be and one magical home that effortlessly brings a bit of glamour to family retreat and has us swooning.
From local communities like Fairhope and Ono Island to neighboring states and all the way to Texas and even Utah, her talents range from contemporary to traditional and everything in between. “I have 30 years of experience working on everything from small one-room renovations to large full-scale construction projects customized to suit the clients’ needs, my team and I do it all! Some people think I only do contemporary or a more modern look, however that is not true,” Cindy shares.
The retail showroom hosts furniture, art, accessories, lighting, rugs and more. The second level serves as the full-service design studio recently expanded to showcase fabrics, wallpapers, tile, marble, and wood samples. “We offer design presentations, showcase renderings and elevations, and floor plans on large screens for clients. We also prepare schedules for paint, tile, plumbing, electrical, and all exterior and interior elements for the builder and homeowners,” Cindy tells us..
“I HAVE 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WORKING ON EVERYTHING FROM SMALL ONE-ROOM RENOVATIONS TO LARGE FULL-SCALE CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS CUSTOMIZED TO SUIT THE CLIENTS’ NEEDS, MY TEAM AND I DO IT ALL!
A rare skill in the design world, Cindy isn’t tied to one look and surrounds herself with a team of six talented women. The perfect segway, this brings us to the pristine vacation home project of Wanda and Poncho James. Nestled on a picturesque waterfront property in Orange Beach, this new build was a dream assignment. An industry driven by relationships, Cindy shares how she secured this fantastic project. “Jeff and Jared Cochran of Cochran Builders introduced us to Poncho and Wanda before construction started. We met in my design studio to go over the plans and make sure we all liked each other. I fell in love with Wanda and Poncho immediately! Because they do not live here full time, it was important to show them how we would handle every detail of the project. We also met with project manager, Skip Jones as well as Jeff at least once a week on site. Constantly going over details helps all of us catch snags before they occur. We love working with Cochran Builders as their attention to detail is what
makes the difference in their custom homes. Skip can make anything happen and Deas Millworks did a great job on architectural details. Superior Granite, Ferguson, and Inspired Closets were all integral parts of the completed design.”
Preferring to jump in during the planning stages of any project, Cindy explains, “It takes an architect, builder, and interior designer to see all aspects and perfect the end result. Everyone has a different point of view from their field of expertise and it takes all eyes to get all the details just right! A lot of homeowners cannot conceive how their home will look and feel from a flat piece of paper. Luckily, we can make it even better than they could imagine. There are so many details to consider like plumbing, hardware, moldings, door styles, lighting, finishes, bathroom design, cabinetry design, and closet design, and the list goes on. We are here to source, create, and present a complete and comprehensive plan.”
Asking for her secret, Cindy tells us, “I learned to be a very good listener long ago and that has proven to be the most important aspect of my job. Getting to know each client and their family is so beneficial and results in lifelong friendships and multiple projects during their different stages of life. Sometimes it even stretches to the homes of other family members!”
For Wanda and Poncho’s home, Cindy teamed up with her newest designer, Brianna Key. “This was Brianna’s first project with me and she brought so many fresh, new ideas. Brianna has amazing project management skills and shared in all of the sourcing and creative processes. It is wonderful to have her gorgeous ideas and to bring her excitement to all aspects of Cindy Meador Interiors. I like to have another set of hands and eyes to always know every aspect of each large project.
Because this is a second home that’s lived in for long lengths of time, Wanda wanted a completely different look than her primary residence that is very traditional. Meant to be a true getaway and a place for family and friends to gather, Cindy and Brianna devised a very calming, serene, neutral pallet to create a spa-like feel. “We added subtle color differences in the bedrooms, too. For instance, their daughter loves her orange Hermes surfboard so we played off of that to create a fun and youthful color palette of oranges and pinks. Since it’s on the water, we used performance fabrics for those family gatherings and boat days, too,” Brianna explains.

“I LEARNED TO BE A VERY GOOD LISTENER LONG AGO AND THAT HAS PROVEN TO BE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF MY JOB. GETTING TO KNOW EACH CLIENT AND THEIR FAMILY IS SO BENEFICIAL AND RESULTS IN LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS AND MULTIPLE PROJECTS DURING THEIR DIFFERENT STAGES OF LIFE.”
From cosmetic treatments to surgical reconstruction, Dr. Kimberly Donnellan delivers when restoring a patient’s self-confidence. As the only female double-board-certified facial plastic surgeon on the Gulf Coast, she operates with improving quality of life in mind.
She helped lead collaborative research – one of the first of its kind – that determined laser scar revision treatments for burn survivors in the outpatient setting were e ective, comfortable and accessible. The findings, published in a peer-reviewed medical journal, reflect the innovative world-class care she and her team provide.
M.D., F.A.C.S.Boasting beautiful mature trees that frame an even better view, the Access team was in complete awe of how a push of a few doors, the inside and outside areas became one. “The big windows and high ceiling allow for maximum light inside and give the feeling of being outside on the water. The sliding glass doors overlooking the pool and outdoor spaces fully open up the entire back side of the home making entertaining an absolute dream,” Cindy tells us.
As for Cindy and Wanda and Poncho’s favorite aspects, “They hand selected the oversized Italian front doors and wanted the fireplace to be the center of her home. Therefore we made the fireplace a statement with the floor to ceiling tile. The primary bathroom is open, light, and beautiful, making it the perfect place to relax. The kitchen countertops and waterfall island garner the most attention from guests as well.”
As for the results? “We are so happy because our clients are happy. We love to create a level of trust with the homeowners in the beginning of a project, and Wanda and Poncho were very involved but also allowed us creative freedom. We’ve become great friends!” Cindy happily concludes. As for Wanda? “Cindy and Brianna made the decision making process so easy. They staged the home so beautifully, it was like a TV show when we walked through the final reveal. Both Poncho and I were blown away, we didn’t send one thing back! They are so good with the details and made everything perfect. We can’t wait to retire here.”

What a Summer! Finally able to enjoy a girls trip, we hit the ground running in the big apple. From cultural jaunts to the saturation of Barbiecore, my cup runneth over. I love seeing how people live and dress, and this trip certainly showed us what the top of the food chain enjoys. Taking it all in big gulps, I’ve accumulated many must-have trends to share.
For starters, the hype of the ‘Barbie’ movie has washed a pink tide over the country. And it seems I just may be a Barbie girl living in a Barbie world as I’ve long been obsessed with pink. I recall asking for a pink room as a child and even demanded to know why the whole room wasn’t pink when the painter tried to explain that ceilings, doors, and trim were customarily painted white. Bless his heart.
Recently, I painted a set of front doors in Oleander pink by Sherwin Williams. It is such a soothing shade — I’m in love! I did have to look through a gazillion shades to find that one, but what a labor of love.
In my dream girls club house, the kitchen island will have natural and pink stools and placemats to make coffee talk even more lively. And any fan of hit show Ted Lasso will recognize the pink ceramic cheetah from Keely’s office. Oh, and the pink garden hose...genius.
My must-see adventure was the 2023 Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York City’s historic Upper West Side. This riverfront mansion did not disappoint, it had us at the powder bath! All the rooms on all 5 floors were freshly curated by 22 top designers and architects, many of whom were on site to discuss their designs. Complete with brilliant blends of Pierre Frey and Schumacher fabrics, personally sourced antiques, vintage Murano chandeliers, and a to-die-for custom canary yellow scalloped coffee table, this home was a visual feast.
At one point we were all huddled in a bathroom admiring the chinoiserie wallpaper and the chippendale vanity chair. We even had to drag out our former beauty queen pal, Pat, AKA Miss Boll Weevil, or she’d still be in there.
Hayley, the editor of Access, graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and chose The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) to visit the Karl Lagerfeld exhibit. There was quite a line and it seemed like every Frenchman and Francophile was there to bask in the glory of Karl’s work. With time to kill, we ventured into The Met’s formidable gift shop. I couldn’t resist buying Hayley a little wooden likeness of the esteemed designer. She was surprised and he now sits on her mantle. It was one of the most beautiful exhibits I’ve ever seen, and I don’t think I had ever really appreciated his talent, vision, and exquisite direction at the House of Chanel until that moment. I’m definitely adding him to my list of people I’d like to dine with in heaven.
As we lingered at every gown, fur coat, and pearl brooch, we were thrilled to see his actual desk. Piled high with his inspiration, it was set up exactly as it was and you could truly picture him creating garments that would find themselves on the most beautiful women in the world. Rumor has it that the desk actually collapsed due to the weight of his inspiration! Afterwards, we found our way to the café and toasted Karl with crisp glasses of rosé.
Of course we saw shows and dined in fantastic places, but our field trips were the highlight of our adventures. Personally, I’m looking forward to figuring out how to mix all these fabulous influences into my home and wardrobe. I hope the following pages filled with my field trip inspired goodies ignite you, too. See you soon on the Barbie-pink carpet!
Pulling in nearly $1 billion worldwide, rumor has it the ‘Barbie’ movie even caused a pink paint shortage! This iconic childhood favorite is having a major moment and thinking pink is the fastest way to look and feel like you’re living in Barbie’s famed Malibu DreamHouse. Here, a few of my favorite Barbie world things. Hint? You have to go all in!
In an effort to raise funds for NYC’s Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, design pros shared the creative musings exciting them right now.
In a mansion on the posh Upper West Side in NYC, these newly reimagined interiors inspired me at every turn. Here, a few key pieces I’m coveting now. Tip? Mix and match!
The Costume Institute’s spring 2023 exhibition examined the work of fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld. Focusing on his themes from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019, the show highlighted 150 pieces and sketches. Witnessing his work left me with a deeper appreciation for the sheer genius of all things black and white. So chic and timeless, these investment pieces top my list.

KARL LAGERFELD: A LINE OF BEAUTY
KARL LAGERFELD: A LINE OF BEAUTY
Atchison Home, a renowned furnishings store known for its sophistication and timeless elegance, has a rich history that spans several decades. Originally founded by the Atchison family in Mobile, Alabama, the store quickly gained a reputation for its curated collection of high-quality furnishings and impeccable design services. Over the years, it became a beloved destination for those seeking to elevate their living spaces with a touch of class and charm. Now, two entrepreneurs, Andy Freeman and Jack McCown, continue, and expand, the legacy.
Having always dreamed of owning their own furniture store one day, their dream became a reality one serendipitous day in early 2018. While shopping for furniture for his law firm, Adams and Reese LLP, Andy stuck his head in Tony Atchison’s office and mentioned that he and his husband, Jack, would be interested in buying the business should the Atchisons ever desire to retire. And the rest they say is history. “They were already doing what we wanted to do,” recalls Andy. “We knew we could never compete with the quality and look of Atchison Home. So we decided to buy it.” Embracing the legacy of Atchison Home, Jack and Andy committed themselves to maintain the store’s reputation for sophistication and elegance.
Atchison Home prides itself on offering a range of services that cater to diverse design needs. Their talented in-house design team is at
the heart of their success. Whether starting with a new home or seeking a refreshing update, the designers collaborate with clients to create personalized design plans based on style, budget, and space. This personalized touch ensures that each project results in a home that reflects the client’s personality and lifestyle. “Our team continues to travel the world in search of inspiration and unique pieces that capture the timeless quality, casual elegance, and inviting comfort that make a house a home; a signature of Atchison Home,” adds Jack.
With their dedication to exceptional service and design, it was only natural for Atchison Home to expand its presence. Last October, the Fairhope showroom opened its doors at 561 Fairhope Ave in the Portoco Building. The expansion allowed them to serve customers and clients living on the eastern shore, offering the same sophisticated products and services but with a smaller footprint. “We’ve loved having the store
in Fairhope,” says Andy. Jack adds, “The community has been so welcoming and supportive of our endeavors and Atchison Home couldn’t feel more at home there.”
At both the Mobile and Fairhope showrooms, visitors can expect a continuous flow of fresh ideas and inspirations. Atchison Home takes pride in avoiding stagnation while maintaining a commitment to quality products that stand the test of time. The ever-changing inventory ensures that clients can always find something unique to adorn their homes.
Managing two showrooms requires an exceptional team, and Atchison Home is fortunate to have one. With a shared passion for design, the team collaborates seamlessly to create beautiful spaces and offer unparalleled service. Each team member brings their own unique talents, contributing to the overall success and reputation of Atchison Home. “We truthfully could not do this without them,” Andy shares. Echoing the sentiment, Jack adds, “I believe that having the right people working with you on a project is much better than working alone. In design, it is so important to have the right collaboration and people who share your visions. Jennifer is great with color and pulling together fabrics and trims that all work harmonious. Ramsey, our newest designer, is always bringing fresh idea to the table. It is incredibly rare to find such talented people to work with and we have so much fun creating beautiful spaces together.”
Atchison Home goes beyond traditional decorative services and offers expertise in large build homes and offices. From the inception of a project, the team works closely with architects, builders, and trades to ensure a seamless and harmonious design process. Getting involved from the beginning allows for a true synergy between the designers and clients, resulting in breathtaking end results that truly reflect the client’s vision.
One of the core beliefs at Atchison Home is the seamless blend of old and new. The team encourages clients to surround themselves with meaningful items that evoke cherished memories, alongside contemporary furnishings that bring freshness and modernity to spaces. This approach creates effortless yet purposeful designs that truly feel like home.
Atchison Home’s journey has been one of timeless elegance and sophistication. With a legacy that stretches back decades and a dedicated team at the helm, the store continues to inspire homeowners and design enthusiasts across Mobile and Baldwin Counties. The combination of curated collections, personalized services, and an eye for design excellence has solidified Atchison Home as a beacon of elegance in Alabama’s design landscape.
“THE COMMUNITY HAS BEEN SO WELCOMING AND SUPPORTIVE OF OUR ENDEAVORS AND ATCHISON HOME COULDN’T FEEL MORE AT HOME THERE.”
Crush alert! Looking to create a perfect space to host client meetings, the Cochran Builders brother duo, Geoffrey and Jared Cochran, hit a grand slam with their new office. Styled to perfection, we were granted a tour of this smart space that speaks volumes about their business approach. A far cry from viewing plans on the hood of a Ford F-150, we were mesmerized by the decorative details and high-tech display options and think you will be, too.
We always love a catch up with Jared and Geoffrey Cochran, the talented brothers that own and operate Cochran Builders. Having covered a variety of their exclusive custom home builds from Mobile to Ono Island, we’ve come to adore and admire them. Not only are they superior craftsmen, they are just so super sweet and happy, too.
During a recent run-in they shared their excitement about their latest venture — a swanky new office for their business meetings and client interactions. And they were super proud to share they even had Cindy Meador, a local all things interior guru, decorate it for them. It didn’t register at first but once we started talking about the location and all the posh design elements, the reason we’re such big fans of this duo became crystal clear.
As women on the move who deal with schedules to rival POTUS, we’re often dismissed, or at the very least, not even considered. And as the brothers excitedly shared all the details about their new digs, wires connected and we realized that they truly value women and go to great lengths to ensure they are seen, heard, and acknowledged when in a business relationship. Having had our full ah-ha moment, we realized this is a big part of their success.
Not wanting to sound negative, we have to ask how many men know the anguish of choosing the perfect kitchen cabinet hinges or stay up all night thinking about that just right entry hall light fixture? Heck, how many are excited about something as simple as the Ruggable concept? While there are exceptions to every rule, we think it’s pretty safe to say women make a lot of the decisions when building a family’s dream home. And the Cochran Brothers get it. Don’t get us wrong,
Jared and Geoffrey aren’t even aware that they do this, but catering to women is simply part of their nature.
Getting to the point, their new office in downtown Fairhope in the prestigious Portico building is the last thing we expected. Much to our surprise we walked into a beautiful space with high ceilings dripping with drapes we dream of, walls painted to perfection in a timeless matte dark green, a spectacular mural, a grand table we’d like to have for a dinner party, and high-end furnishings, art, and decorative items that spoke to us.
Realizing clients deserve a nice meeting space where they can review plans, process, and perhaps bicker, is paramount. “Our overall goal was to have a place to sit with clients where they would feel relaxed and comfortable, and be able to get their vision across to us about their home build. When meeting with clients, architects, or decorators, it is important to have a big table to spread out samples, plans and pictures and we have that now,” Jared shares.
Adding tech to the mix, Geoffrey adds, “Audio Indulgence did a great job installing our 75 inch wall mounted computer which we love! It’s so nice to have a touch screen where we can pull up plans, estimates, and contracts and make notes, draw revisions, and overlay sketches on them to provide clear and precise
information to our clients during meetings.”
In terms of using a decorator, Geoffrey continues, “Contrary to popular opinion, the very best builders love decorators and know the value they bring to a project. Cindy is extremely organized and on the cutting edge of design and style. We knew she would make our space the very best it could be. For us, hiring the very best subcontractors, tradespeople, and decorators is key to make a build a success. These people have the experience and talent needed to provide our customers with the exact finishes they desire. We absolutely love Cindy and knew she would be the best person to help us make this an attractive, comfortable, functional space. We just let Cindy do what she does, and we love it.”
“Having someone keep you on point ensures success and makes the job so much more enjoyable. Cindy had a wonderful vision, as usual, for the colors, decor, drapes, and fur-
nishings. We’ve had the pleasure of working with several talented decorators, and Cindy is among the best. It is of the utmost importance to have a top decorator when embarking on a high end build as there are so many choices that can make it confusing.,” Jared tells us. Agreeing, Geoffrey chimes in, “Cindy is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet! Her vision is unbelievable and she works tirelessly until the final product is flawless. Because of her incredible attention to detail, she provides us with all the necessary information we need to implement her designs. I have zero hesitation when someone asks for my recommendation — Cindy is my go to!”
On a personal note, Geoffrey states, “I’m a little jaded with the black and white look that’s been prevalent the last several years. We love that Cindy introduced color into our project and yes, wallpaper is back! My wife and daughter absolutely love it, which probably
didn’t work out well for me as Cindy is currently working on my personal home. I guess the new boat will have to wait!”
Concluding, Jared tells us, “Having an official office space makes us more professional. Especially one as beautiful as this, we don’t mind when a client, or potential client, asks to meet at our office. We are proud to bring them here.”
The secret weapon behind many successful building projects, Deas Millwork is more than a local gem. A full service, custom millwork and casework facility servicing the Southeast and beyond, owner and operator, Zach Deas has never experienced a challenge he couldn’t meet when it comes to building the seemingly impossible. Daring us all to dream big, Zach and his team of over forty employees are here to make the magic happen. With his toothpaste commercial worthy smile and authentic Southern charm, Zach opens his custom doors to reveal the skills behind all those glorious wooden home details we love so much and more.
As the Access team has become acquainted with Zach, we’re simply mesmerized by all that he can do. At first we assumed that he simply built cabinets and those special wood features only found in old homes. Think a curved stair banister or a special molding. Much to our surprise, he and his team are super skilled craftsmen able to build custom arbors, bookshelves, corbels, pergolas, mantles, furniture, doors, windows, wall paneling, medallions, and so much more — in just about any wood or other materials imaginable. And, he can make them modern, too.
Not one to brag, Zach’s talents often stretch far beyond even the most dedicated home design enthusiasts comprehension. For starters, his skill level not only enables him to recreate something historically meaningful, but he can install it the way it was originally installed. And he uses the same tools used in yesteryear. With his incredible knowledge of how things were and are now built, he could seriously have a PhD in hardware alone. Due to his humble nature, perhaps we should just call him the Accidental Historian.
And boasting an affinity for technology, he also has countless partnerships with the absolute best home supply companies. Yep, Deas Millwork is a lot to digest — regardless of your Architectural Digest subscription.
For example, if you have big hassle-free deck dreams, he has a partnership with Accoya, the highly acclaimed sustainable wood giant based in the Netherlands. Knowing everyone is obsessed with those sleek black steel frame doors and windows, Zach has a partnership with Brombal where renowned Italian craftsmanship meets the highest technical standards available. If you’re wanting to line the back of your home with doors that fully open to the outside area, he can do that, too. Looking for custom shutters? He can build those from scratch or source them from his partners at the Southern Shutter Co., too. Fancy a custom column? Check that too!
And don’t get us started on windows. Able to rebuild those deemed historically significant by historic preservation organizations, Zach and his team can even transform windows from the weight-and-pulley era. Clearly, the range of Zach’s vendor partnerships is truly a mile long which makes it easy for architects, builders, and homeowners to achieve their custom goals.
A favorite of local home builders that offer custom options, Zach has also left a handprint on countless local businesses from the RSA Tower in downtown Mobile to the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, and beyond. We will never check into a hotel again without wondering if Zach’s team built the front desk. If it’s beautiful, chances are he and his team did.
Founded in 1998, the company began as a small general contracting business as Zach had been around construction his entire life. Interestingly, it was during the 2008 financial crisis that Zach quickly realized his passion and strength was in millwork. “After finishing five homes in October of 2008, my phone stopped ringing but I had a long backlog of millwork. It was at that time we decided to develop our millwork capabilities and now we’re able to do what others can’t,” Zach shares.
With no time to look back, Zach adds, “We stay very busy and absolutely love what we do. From the builders and architects to the family’s we serve, the team and I love going to work every day. Since no two jobs are alike,
we become completely engaged and welcome a challenge. With 40 employees, some have been with me for over 20 years!”
Originally from Mobile, Zach is dad to three daughters; Mattie Grace, Allie, and Emie. “I hated Mobile when I was growing up! I even moved to Hawaii for three years and traveled extensively only to realize that we have a great place to live here!” Zach jokes. And while his feet are firmly planted in the Bay area, he still likes to travel. An avid surfer and scuba diver, Zach has gone as far as Indonesia and as nearby as Key West. Naturally, he loves to hunt and fish as well. Afterall, you can take the boy out of Alabama, but you can’t take Alabama out of the boy. But perhaps most importantly, no job is too big or too small for Zach and his team. So go ahead and pull out those sketches and give Zach a ring, you’ll be glad you did.

Meet Alison (Ali) Hollis, D.O., the newest addition to the Fairhope Gynecology and Obstetrics (FGO) team. Affiliated with Thomas Hospital, part of the Infirmary Health System, Dr. Hollis brings her expertise and passion for women’s health to the charming coastal town of Fairhope. Married to engineer husband, Trent Hollis, since July 2017, the couple is excited to make Fairhope their home and Dr. Hollis is eager to meet her new patients.

Drawn to a career where she could directly help people, her interest in science and anatomy pointed her towards medicine. “I will admit at the age of 18, I really was unable to comprehend that this journey would consume the next 12 years of my life. But after completing residency and finally beginning practice, I can say it was fully worth it,” she tells us. Her passion for obstetrics and gynecology grew stronger during her time at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine (ACOM) and her fouryear OBGYN residency in Chattanooga, TN. “As I began searching for
a practice to join after completing residency, my husband and I took a trip to Fairhope and fell in love with the quaint, Bay life and small town charm. A perk also was that my family now lives in Pensacola and Trent’s are somewhat close as well in the Birmingham area.”
As a new OB/GYN provider at FGO, Dr. Hollis will offer a full spectrum of both OB and GYN care to her patients starting September 1st. What attracted her to join the practice was not just the quaint, bay life of Fairhope but also the warm welcome she received from FGO. “FGO was incredibly welcoming and offered all the support a new graduate needs in a practice—a range of experience, an established patient base, and most importantly, each partner all seemed to love their job,” Dr. Hollis recalls. “The work-life balance was something I was really drawn to, and FGO has a great formula for this.”
Dr. Hollis has a particular interest in high-risk obstetrics and complex OB care, as well as GYN surgery, including laparoscopy, vaginal, and robotic surgery. “After seeing my first delivery and my first C section in medical school, I was truly in awe, and I knew that if I was going to be waking up at 2AM on call in the middle of the night, this was what I wanted it to be for,” she proudly states. But what truly drew her to the field was the patientphysician relationship she has the opportunity to develop. “Our field is very unique given how personal, emotional, and sensitive our interactions with our patients can be,” says Dr. Hollis. “Developing a patient’s trust is something I hope to do with every one of my patients, and that they feel listened to and understood. As a provider, you have the opportunity to be there on someone’s best day, or what may be their worst as they walk through the heartache of a miscarriage.”
Dr. Hollis comes with an impressive resume of awards and accolades including the Alper Humanitarian Award (2023) and the Maternal Fetal Medicine Department Award (2022-2023). Dr. Hollis won these awards due to her positive attitude, upbeat energy, ability to keep a clear focus and communicate, and her ability to listen to her patients. On receiving these awards Dr. Hollis says, “I was humbled to receive such an award and aim to bring this energy to my patients here as well.”
As a young, female physician, Dr. Hollis sometimes feels the pressure to establish her credibility in the medical field, but hopes her patients see her age in a relatable and connectable way. “Even if I haven’t directly experienced what they are walking through, the odds are good I have a similar experience or know someone else who has,” she reassures us. But the biggest reason to trust Dr. Hollis with
“ALI WILL SURELY BE ANOTHER GREAT ADDITION TO THE FGO FAMILY IN SERVING THE CONTEMPORARY NEEDS OF WOMEN’S HEALTHCARE IN OUR REGION. AS RECENT CHIEF RESIDENT AT UT- CHATTANOOGA, SHE ADDS TO THE COMPREHENSIVE EXPERIENCE WITHIN OUR CLINIC THAT NOW REPRESENTS FOUR MAJOR TRAINING INSTITUTIONS. AND WHILE IT MAY BE IMPOSSIBLE TO REPLACE OUR CHAIRMAN EMERITUS, DR. RICHARD ROH, WE WELCOME HOME THIS COMPASSIONATE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA ALUMNA TO THE GULF COAST WITH OPEN ARMS!”

your health is her fierce passion for advocating for women’s healthy, both physical and emotional. “I encourage all patients to ask questions and keep learning about their health. One of the most amazing things about life is how much our physical bodies are able to adapt and change over a lifetime. I think some of these changes can be very frustrating at times to people, and it’s ok to acknowledge those concerns,” she says. “Working together to shift our perspective and figure out solutions to things like period irregularities, weight fluctuations, acne, whatever it may be- I enjoy helping women achieve their goals.”
Dr. Hollis will be joining a team of six full-time practicing OB/GYNs at FGO. She is excited to learn from her experienced partners while also bringing fresh insights from her recent training. The team’s collaborative approach ensures that patients receive evidencebased care tailored to their specific needs. “It has been very clear to me that as OB/GYN providers we do not practice solely in a vacuum, we work together to bring our patients evidence-based care,” she tells us.
Apart from her medical career, Dr. Hollis and her husband, Trent, are enthusiastic about their life outside of work. They enjoy taking their Australian Shepherd on long walks and share a love for cooking and hosting dinner parties with friends. Moving to Fairhope, they are looking forward to exploring all the coastal activities the area has to offer, from the beaches of Gulf Shores to the warm, welcoming community of Fairhope.
Dr. Alison Hollis is well prepared to serve the women of Fairhope and the surrounding communities. Her dedication to empowering women to take control of their health and her compassionate bedside manner make her a valuable addition to Fairhope Gynecology and Obstetrics. Patients seeking OB or GYN care can begin scheduling appointments with Dr. Hollis, and they can expect exceptional care from a physician who truly values the patientphysician relationship.

To say it’s been a hot summer is an understatement. With no shortage of beach days and sunny rays, this is the perfect time of year to tend to our skin. And with so many potions, products, and promising treatments, what’s a gal (or guy) to do? The sea of options can leave even the most diligent perfect-skin-seekers paralyzed at times and that’s why we’re putting the Morpheus8 through the ringer. Here, Clare Carney, M.D., Ph.D., explains why she’s obsessed with this modern marvel.
Always amazed by her pristine complexion, we jumped at the chance to learn about Dr. Clare Carney’s latest aesthetic investment — the Morpheus8. Knowing A-list celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Jessica Simpson have tried and loved this skin tightening treatment certainly piqued our interest. Interestingly, even TikTokers refer to it as “the holy grail of skincare treatments.” We also know that it’s been around awhile so we thought a checkin was in order as we’re finally past the newness hype, too.
The Morpheus8 uses fractional skin remodeling to stimulate new collagen and to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and skin discoloration from the sun using radiofrequency. “Essentially, the machine’s wand has 24 tiny needles that pierce the skin, reaching the subdermal layer to deliver regulated heat energy through radio frequency. Depending on the area being treated and whether the intention is to tighten skin, repair wrinkles, melt fat, or all of the above, results are more significant than other microneedling and laser treatments,” Dr. Carney shares.
The Morpheus8 can also be used to improve skin tone and texture, lessen acne scarring, and fade stretch marks on the body. As for the pain and healing factors? “Your skin will definitely be a bit red and splotchy after treatment. The skin may feel tight and look a bit sunburned. Clients have mentioned being just just slightly uncomfortable at times and the occasional icing helps soothe these sensations. By the 24-hour mark, no one would know you had the treatment the day before, both in look and feel. While some Morpheus8 outcomes can be seen almost immediately, it can take three to four weeks to observe all of the results,” she shares.
Super star Eva Longoria credits Morpheus8 for helping her get her body back after delivering her son. “Excess abdominal skin is a common concern shared by both women and men. For women who have children, pregnancy’s physical toll often includes loose abdominal skin. Men may encounter the same issue after losing weight. Even people who work out regularly and consume a nutritious diet remain frustrated by loose stomach skin. For the right patients, this nonsurgical approach can help with little to no downtime, and it can be used on the skin anywhere on the body, including the neck, chest, abdomen, bottom, thighs, hands, and more to achieve skin rejuvenation and tightening. Versatile, it can work at a range of depths, from 4mm for resurfacing facial treat-
Major in Alabama’s National Guard which has taken her to cold climates like Poland and Romania. And as the mother of two teen boys, it’s safe to say she’s in the Alabama sun a lot. “I face all the elements throughout the year and they definitely take a toll on my skin. Even though I’m a fanatic when it comes to sunscreen, damage from the sun’s rays is cumulative and most everyone of a certain age has uneven pigmentation. So when I learned about Morpheus8, I was instantly intrigued. Naturally, I’ve had treatments and the results were so good, I decided to train and offer it at my practice. And my patients love it, too!”
With just a moment to pause before school goes into full swing and football season starts, perhaps it’s the perfect time to consider a little self care. Afterall, nothing looks better than a healthy glow.
ments to deeper depths up to 8mm for body treatments–-deeper than any other microneedling treatment. This allows Morpheus8 to effectively target the subdermal level and treat more significant skin concerns such as scars and stretch marks,” Dr. Carney explains.
As an adored health care provider, Dr. Carney offers aesthetic services in order to provide her patients with whole being care. She knows all too well the challenges we face with aging aren’t limited to our physical beings. “I do everything I can to offer the absolute best care for my patients. From aesthetic services to weight management and preventative care, I’ve seen the positive results from diagnosing and treating the whole person. Our mental health affects our physical health and vice versa. As a general practitioner, providing complete and thorough care is my absolute goal and something I am very dedicated to,” she adds.

While it can’t be denied that it’s incredibly tough out there for a lot of adults, that doesn’t minimize the fact that teens are also under an enormous amount of pressure. From drugs that kill upon contact, to sexual pressures starting younger than adults can imagine, the impact of social media, and so much more, teens are tired, stressed, and anxious, too.
As we age, adults become estranged from just how difficult those times were and can distort that journey into a more favorable light over time. While the adolescent world may look like a walk in the park in the face of today’s stressors resting squarely on our adult-sized shoulders, that doesn’t negate your teen’s struggles as they navigate their “firsts” or their reactions to their world and what they observe about yours.
Many well-intended parents try their hardest to be helpful and provide their teens with the insights and lessons they recognize they themselves needed in the past. However, they often end up missing
the mark for what their child was really needing from them, anyway. Additionally, many parents end up projecting their own anxieties or perceptions onto their children, immediately undermining what they’re actually trying to accomplish and potentially contributing to the risk of their worst fears coming true by default.
To help us all out, I’ve asked many of my young clients what they wished their parents knew, understood or did differently, and here’s what they had to say: “I just wish they knew me for me.” “Your words actually DO hurt and affect Me — even when I don’t show it.” “Style is about self-expression. When you insult my fashion choices, it makes me feel like I need to change myself.” “I wish they understood that I need space sometimes and that I can handle myself. I might not know everything but I know how to just…live.” “Educate yourself on things you don’t understand and try to understand. Be more accepting of our differences.” “It’s okay for me to have emotions. I’m not a robot.”
As a mental health insider working with adolescents and young adults, Sydney Wasdin, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, RYT, sees many of the struggles today’s teens face.Often told most adults don’t understand what it’s like, she’s here to share a glimpse into the their world to offer a path for better understanding and relationship opportunities.
“Don’t dismiss my pain and trauma or compare mine to yours.” “Yelling for any reason isn’t helpful when I’m already struggling enough as it is.”
If any of these statements have triggered you, it’s okay. Take it as an indicator that some exploration of that defensiveness could offer some benefits that would help you better show up for your child, yourself, and your relationship together!
Moral of the story? Just like you, and everyone else in the world, they need to feel authentically and openly heard and respected, and want to walk away feeling that you’re on their side, and you’re a safe
landing place for them to come to whenever needed. And that may be exactly what you want for them, too. So let’s talk about how to make that a reality.
To accomplish this with your child/teen, you need to create a safe environment, physically, mentally and emotionally for them to feel like they can come to you about anything — without allowing your emotions and reactions to squash it two seconds later. They’re very perceptive and where adults are concerned, they notice when words don’t align with actions. Next, make a visible effort to empathize, understand, and support them how they need you to, even if you don’t feel or think the same way. Respond in ways that help them feel heard. But that also doesn’t mean turning yourself into their friend. You can respond compassionately and empathize with your child and also be assertive,
enforce boundaries and expectations, and have hard conversations needed within your role as their parent. It takes both. It takes balance. Practice helps.
Take some additional time to spend with your child doing something they love or enjoy doing and explore their likes, thoughts, and feelings with them. Be patient and accepting for them to open up to you if they’re hesitant. Maybe explore that hesitation or other observations you’ve made with non-judgment and compassion — without negative reaction, criticism, or guilt tripping if they say something you don’t like or don’t want to hear. With time, non-judgement, and acceptance, they’ll come around. If you’d like more help, follow up with a mental health professional — even individual counseling for yourself can help you go a long way with your relationships, yourself, and your children of all ages. If you’re interested in learning more about this and parenting for teens, therapy for individuals and families, check out a support class like our local parent project groups with One more Moment.

care of you, Mama
As Matt LeMond and his team ready our favorite hot spots for fall spirits and food, Matt is more than grateful for his supportive staff. Highlighting top contributor, Michael Foster, we get to know one of the secret ingredients behind POST, POST on the Hill, O’Daly’s, and the Outsider. Hint? Matt doesn’t do it alone, and team work does indeed make the dream work.
Living in a city born to celebrate, most of us have learned that a good time requires great servers and bartenders. As a business owner of over five successful establishments, I take that very seriously. From the killer cocktails to the clean facilities, I lean on my team to ensure everything is perfect for our guests. Originally from Kimberly, Alabama, Michael Foster moved to Mobile in 2018 to attend the University of South Alabama. Blending into the community, he joined our team and is now holding court while creating some of our favorite libations at POST Crafted Cocktails and Wine Bar in downtown Mobile.
Asking Michael about his experience, he shares, “I started working at POST in 2022 right before Mardi Gras weekend! I’ve enjoyed moving through the ranks and as head server and a bartender, I have absolutely loved exploring my creativity in creating cocktails. I even began working at new locations such as The Outsider and POST on the Hill training opening staff.”
Now that we are rolling out of summer and into fall, and football season, Michael is definitely going to miss our Goodbye Earl and the 9-5 cocktails from the summer menu. “The Goodbye Earl is a blend of Heigold, a Kentucky straight bourbon, Earl Grey tea, mint, lavender, lemon, and muddled blackberries. Our fall cocktails will be introduced in early September, and I have sampled a few and can’t wait to see which ones get chosen! My all time favorite cocktail is Here Comes the Sun because tequila and I are great friends,” Michael jokes.
Regardless of what, or if, you’re drinking, this scenic city has a lot to offer and we always aim to bring the fun. “I describe Mobile’s downtown vibe as a sense of community or family. I’ve made the best connections with so many industry professionals and being part of the team with Matt LeMond,Tyler Sayers, and Jaimie Hilyer has been out of this world. They’ve created such a welcoming atmosphere and each employee is a part of the family (or O’Framily as we like to call it). Matt has a motto “we don’t work for him, we work with him”, and I think that sets the standard for how great it is to work at any of our bars,” Michael shares.
Per usual, POST has countless fun events planned and of course Michael is in the middle of it all. “Tiki week is right around the corner and all of the cocktails are phenomenal. My personal favorite is our monthly drag brunches! And our big Halloween blowout is right around the corner, too. Once the Braided River Winter Crush ale comes back, it’ll be a personal favorite of mine. And I am in the middle of perfecting a Black Walnut New York Sour to get in the fall mindset!” Michael confesses. Manager, Tyler Sayers says it best, “Michael is a beaming ray of sunshine that brightens any room. He always arrives early, leaves late, and offers to help. Customers and coworkers adore him! He’s truly a blessing to POST!” As for me? I completely agree and hope our clientele does as well.
